Thecurrentera,theAnthropoceneEra,is characterizedbytheprofoundalterations madebyhumanitytoeveryfacetoflifeon thisplanet.Onesignificantconsequenceof thesechangesistherampantproliferationof pollution.Pollution,inessence,referstothe actofcontaminatingordegradingtheenvironment,renderingitunsuitableorhazardousforuseduetotheintroductionof man-madewaste.Whilepollutantscanoccur naturally,suchasvolcanicash,theyare oftenthebyproductofhumanactivities,such asthedisposaloftrashortherunoffgeneratedbyindustrialfactories.

FeaturedupstairsisDoomscrollbyartist NickMasiello.DoomScrollingishumorously definedas“theactofspendinganexcessive amountoftimereadinglargequantitiesofnegativenewsonline,eventhoughthatnewsis saddening,dishearteningordepressing.”Nick begananewseriesofpaintingsjustmonths beforeHurricaneIanhitinSeptember2022,not knowinghowmuchimpacttheserieswould haveonhim,norwhatIanwouldhaveonthe series.Mostofthematerialsarefounditems,of whichheinitiallydoubtedhewouldhave enough.However,afterthestorm,therewas morematerialthanhereallyknewwhattodo with.Fromthatlivedexperienceofsurvivingthe stormanditsaftermath,anideaforashowwas formed.Strandedforaweekwithoutserviceor power,Nickcravedtheabilitytogetonsocial mediaandscrollforhourstotakehismindoff ofwhathadjusthappened,theclassicdoom scroll.Oncehewasbackhome,Nickspenthoursonlinesaving memesandwatchingcomedyvideostodistractfromthedestruction,andfeltsomerelief.However,thatpeacewasshallowand brief,andashebegantotravelaroundthearea,takingphotographswhilediscoveringcast-offmaterialsinthemoundsofdiscardswithbeautyhecouldrepurposeforhispaintings,hefound thepeacehewasseekingbyhelpinghurricanevictimsandnotin doomscrolling.Everypartofthatexperienceandthecurrentstate ofSouthwestFloridahasgoneintomakingthesepieces,including objectsfromfriends’homes,personaleffectsthatwerebothdamagedandsaved,paintthatsurvivedthefloodwater,imagestaken ofthearea,andmementosoftimespast,areallcombinedwith thesourcethatfirstgavehimpeaceafteritall-memes.
