THEATRE
Florida Repertory Theatre extends run of Hay Fever
Florida Repertory Theatre announces the extension of Hay Fever by Noël Coward, a witty and hilarious comedy of bad manners, playing now through March 9 in the Historic Arcade Theatre. Set against the backdrop of the glamorous 1920s, this classic farce is Coward at his finest: razor-sharp and as dry as a martini. The Bohemian Bliss family is gathered for a relaxing weekend in the English countryside and unbeknownst to the others, each of them has invited a guest. What was supposed to be a weekend of leisure spirals into mayhem as the family's eccentricities prove too much for their unsuspecting visitors. "This is one of the great English comedies," said Florida Rep artistic director Greg Longenhagen, "and audiences are in for a treat with a top-notch cast and expert creative team. No playwright is as good as Coward when it comes to capturing the foibles of the English upper classes, and the result is crisp writing, delightful characters and comedy that stands the test of time. Hay Fever is as funny today as it was when Coward wrote it 90 years ago. This comedy is the play to see if you are looking for laughs." Regional theatre and Broadway veterans Kate Levy and Matt Sullivan make their Florida Rep debuts to lead the cast as the eccentric stage actress, Judith Bliss, and her egotistical writer husband, David Bliss. Levy was seen most recently on Broadway in
Bernhardt/Hamlet, and Sullivan's recent regional credits include the Guthrie Theatre, Minetta Lane, and Baltimore Center Stage. Also making their Florida Rep debuts are New York actors Jake Murphy and Olivia Stevenson as Simon and Sorel, the equally eccentric and self-centered Bliss children. Murphy was recently seen offBroadway at the Potomac Theatre Company, and Stevenson worked recently with Greenbrier Valley Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe. Florida Rep ensemble members Rachel Burttram and Brendan Powers are joined by frequent guest artist Seth Andrew Bridges and current acting intern company member Sydney Torres as the Bliss' unsuspecting guests. Also returning to Florida Rep's stage is British stage and screen actress Lesley Staples as the Bliss' long-suffering maid. Tickets are available online at www.FloridaRep.org and through the box office at 239-332-4488. Tickets are at $55 and $49 for regular performances. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Florida Repertory Theatre performs in the Historic Arcade Theatre and the ArtStage Studio Theatre on Bay Street between Jackson & Hendry with limited free parking in the Fort Myers River District.

THEATRE
Naples Players present Guys & Dolls
The Naples Players announce the cast for the upcoming classic musical production, Guys & Dolls, which runs March 6 through April 7 in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players Sugden Theatre. The artistic duet that led the creative and musical direction behind TNP’s sell-out productions, Chicago and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, are leading the charge once again on Guys & Dolls. Naples favorite Dawn Lebrecht Fornara is directing/choreographing and paired with the masterful musical direction of Charles Fornara. In fact, it was 15 years ago that this musical brought Charlie and Dawn together for the first time. Now they re-live those moments, but as a married couple. Guys & Dolls is a classic American musical featuring some of Frank Loesser’s most memorable tunes, including the hilarious “Adelaide’s Lament,” the romantic “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” the exuberant “If I Were a Bell,” and the classic “Luck Be a Lady.” Involving the unlikeliest of Manhattan pairings, Guys & Dolls follows the story of a high-rolling gambler and a puritanical missionary, a showgirl dreaming of the straight-and-narrow and a crap game manager who is anything but. Guys & Dolls takes us from bustle of Times Square to the dance clubs of Havana to the sewers of New York City as it demonstrates the great lengths to which a guy will go when he truly falls in love with a “doll.” Performing in this masterful and unforgettable musical, are cast
members: Amy Hughes and Jesse Hughes, another married couple remembered for their notable performances in TNP’s Music Man as Marian and Harold Hill, play Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson respectively. TNP newcomer David Shaffer is Nathan Detroit and Jessica Walck (Sylvia, Chicago) is Miss Adelaide. Reprising the successful and memorable TNP Guys & Dolls production from 15 years ago, Joseph Loiacono returns to perform as Arvide Abernathy again as well as Jim Corsica as Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Bev Canell, oft referred to with the upmost admiration as “The General” within the walls of the Sugden Community Theatre, is reprising her unforgettable role as General Cartwright. Completing the cast is Len Becker as Harry the Horse, Bob Patteri as Big Jule, Paul Lopresti plays Lieutenant Brannigan, Jason Eugenides is Benny Southstreet, Evelyn Kasper is Agatha, and Jack Weld as Rusty Charlie. Ensemble members include: Gaby Biagi, Mackenzie Black, Julia Cornwall, Sophia Costa, Adam Fasano, Frankie Federico, Jeremy Giovinazzo, Wiefta Jean, Kevin Kenneally, Elizabeth Marcantonio, Harry McCartney, Stephanie Nelson, Jack Norkeliunas, Ella Pflaumer, Thomas Richardson, Ryan Roberge, Logan Szittai, Sharon True, Perry Ventro, Lindsey Walsh and Elyse Yun. Sugden Theatre is located at 701 5th Avenue South in Naples. Tickets are $45 and are available online at www.NaplesPlayers.org or by calling 239-263-7990.

Steel Magnolias on Charlotte Players’ stage
Boffo is an informal theatrical term meaning “very good,” as in “boffo b-o (box office).” Charlotte Players is hoping for just that when the much-anticipated Steel Magnolias arrives on the Langdon Playhouse stage March 8 through March 24. Many will remember the 1989 film adaptation of Robert Harling’s 1987 play. Director Herbert Ross coaxed star turns from Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and the unforgettable Julia Roberts, who won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. Local director Gary Seddon has assembled a strong cast for the Charlotte Players production set in a beauty salon in Chinquapin, La., with wise-cracking salon owner Truvy Jones, her eager new assistant Annelle Dupuy-DeSoto, rich curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux, eccentric millionaire Clairee Belcher, social leader M’Lynn Eatenton and her daughter Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie. Filled with hilarious repartee, the play is truly touching, as the women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process. “The six female characters are like the metaphor of the title,” said Seddon. “Playwright Robert Harling describes them as flowers that are ‘so delicate … but actually made of much stronger stuff.’ “In the spirit of true friendship, they speak the truth with honesty that is sorely missing in our country today,” the director added. “The universal themes in Steel Magnolias account for its longevity and relevance today.” Meanwhile, Irish eyes will be smiling, and no doubt shedding a tear or two, during this St. Patrick’s Day month when the Charlotte 10 - March 2019
Players presents a pair of popular Irishmen, comedian George Casey and tenor Cahal Dunne, both appearing for one-night-only shows at the William H. Wakeman III Cultural Center Theater in Port Charlotte. Casey, also known as the “King of Blarney,” will take the stage on March 12. Born in a remote village in Ireland, he grew up in a large family where he honed his skills as a comic at the expense of his brothers and sisters. “Ireland’s International Comedian” has been entertaining audiences the world over for more than 30 years. Two days later, in Cahal Dunne in Concert, the famed songwriter, pianist and storyteller makes a welcome return. Known as “Ireland’s Piano Man,” the County Cork native is sure to entertain his many existing fans and gain some new ones. Also in March, auditions for Jack Benny’s Not 39 Anymore take place on Sunday, March 17, and Monday, March 18, at the Charlotte Players Community Theater Center, 1100 Market Circle, Port Charlotte. Director Jenni Elliott will be seeing actors at 7 p.m. both days. Like Jack Benny, Norman is as young as he feels. Suffering from retirement remorse, he hatches business schemes to fill idle hours. Edna, his loving wife, is delighted that her new neighbor Rosemary has a son who may be a match for their daughter. When widowed Rosemary recognizes Norman and reminds him of their youthful, romantic past, Edna is threatened and works to keep their offspring apart, hoping it also keep Norman and Rosemary apart. The comedy is set for the Langdon Playhouse in May. Chicago, Ripcord on stage at Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral in March By Michael Moran
There’s never been a better time to experience Chicago, Broadway’s razzledazzle smash. This triumphant hit musical is the recipient of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy, thousands of standing ovations and now the #1 longestrunning American musical in Broadway history. Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another. With a darkly comic book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, and unforgettable music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is set in the rip-roaring 1920s. Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a part-time nightclub hoofer who in a fit of rage kills her lover after he leaves her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes her jailhouse rival Velma Kelly, and the whole Windy City by hiring the area’s slickest lawyer to engineer her crime into an onslaught of misleading, sen-

sational newspaper headlines. In Chicago, Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly, another local murderess engage in a publicity war to sensationalize their stories prior to their court date and pin their hopes on freedom and then stardom after their release. After all, Chicago has never hanged a woman before…but, there always a first time. All records eventually fall. Chicago will open on stage March 1 and play through March 10 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Matinees on Saturday and Sundays at 3 p.m. Following next on March 23 through March 31 will be Ripcord, a hilarious comic drama by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire. In Ripcord, we meet two competitive female roommates at the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility. Cantankerous Abby, is forced to share her sunny third floor room with newly arrived and infuriatingly
chipper Marilyn. Abby is determined to get rid of Marilyn by any means necessary; however, Marilyn has no inclination to leave. The women eventually strike a bargain: If Abby can force the good humored Marilyn to get angry, Abby gets to keep the room as a single. If Marilyn can scare the stoic Abby, then Abby has to give up her bed near the window with its view of the park. What follows is an escalating battle as each challenge becomes more desperate and dastardly. As the play progresses, each woman’s secrets are revealed, adding a personal layer to the rivalry in a bittersweet Golden Girls meets The Odd Couple style story. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Contact the box office for tickets at 239-772-5862. Tickets for shows are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors, with student and group rates available. Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral. From March 7 to April 4, Sea Grape Gallery will be featuring two of their artists, Jill Lindsay, mixed media artist, and Barbara Simmons, sterling silver jewelry artist. Jill Lindsay is a contemporary artist whose work is described as colorful, exuberant, whimsical and wild. She works with alcohol inks, acrylics, mixed media and resin. When viewing Jill’s work, it becomes obvious that color is the inspiration for her work. However, she does enjoy adding an unexpected twist to surprise the viewer, whether it’s a blue palm tree, a seagull wearing boots or a hot pink sky. Jill loves trying new techniques and

using materials you may not consider, such as tabletops, candles and tile. Jill’s “square” collages were inspired by a visit to the Dali museum in Tampa. As Jill explains, “I believe that inspiration is everywhere, you just have to look”. In addition to creating her beautiful artwork, Jill teaches several workshops where she truly enjoys seeing her students’ artistic abilities grow as they create their own beautiful artwork. Barbara Simmons believes her creative genes stem from her father and mother who both displayed very artistic abilities. However, instead of focusing on a career in art, Barbara took a different direction and pursued a career as a high school library media teacher after graduating from the University of Albany in New York. After retiring from teaching, she then decided to explore the art world and see where her creative genes would lead her. She took a class in silver jewelry and immediately became hooked. Barb’s simple and natural creative designs are inspired by unique stones and interesting shapes. She uses a variety of minerals and gems in her settings, but specializes in larimar, a rare mineral found only in the Dominican Republic. While previously living in California for several years, Barb collected sea glass from the local beach-

Doug Michalski is an award-winning landscape and wildlife painter based in North Port. Growing up in Lockport, NY, Doug discovered his propensity for art at a young age. During his 32- year tenure as a middle school art teacher, he inspired generations of students. After retiring to Florida, Doug progressed from painting in watercolors to acrylics. His signature bold style is created by working with a limited palette of 3 colors, plus black and white to achieve light and contrast. His accomplishments include co-founding the popular Fort Myers Art Walk, the Union Artist Studios at Alliance for the Arts and DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery. David has won many awards both for his artistic endeavors and his involvement in the local arts community, and he has exhibited nationally and internationally. His pictorial work is recognizable by bold colors, textures, and clever composition. A trademark of his work is the bold, dark line that frames his colorful images. He does occasionally create darker imagery attributed to his silent resistance to conformity and established stereotypes. In New York City, they met pianist Reiko Alzawa, who had made her U.S. debuts at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. She was the last pupil of legendary pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute. In the four-year period following their debut performance, they were booked for almost 200 concerts in the U.S. and India tours of Japan and. They will make their European debut this year. The Trio is Ensemble-inResidence at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Saturday, March 23 Star-Crossed Lovers in Opera The truly thrilling characters in the world of opera are the ill-fated star-crossed lovers whose lives and loves are challenged by insurmountable obstacles. This makes for great drama and music for Puccini’s Mimi and Rodolfo, Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Edgardo, Verdi’s Violetta and Alfredo, and, happily, for the would-be lovers in The Elixir of Love and The Merry Widow. These, and more, will be performed by six professional opera singers in a delightful evening of best-known and best-loved arias and ensembles, all with projected supertitles. Alan Mann, noted opera historian, adds informative narration. Tuesday, March 26 New York Brass Arts Trio Three world-class virtuoso soloists have come together to revolutionize the brass trio, and are being hailed as the first brass group ever to play with the sensitivity and musicality of a string quartet. Trumpeter Joe Burgstaller, French hornist David Jolley and trombonist Haim Avitsur all bring great experience to the table. Burgstaller is a former featured trumpeter and

arranger with the legendary Canadian Brass, has performed with many notable orchestras, and has recording credentials that include solo CDs, three Top-10 Billboard hits, and a Top-50 Jazz Radio hit. Jolley is the pre-eminent horn soloist of his generation, performing as a soloist with major orchestras, collaborating with Guarneri, Orion and American string quartets, and is a founding member of the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Avitsur is the only trombonist named a 2005 and 2007 Emerging Artist by Symphony Magazine and has premiered over eighty compositions. Incorporated in 1987 as a non-for-profit organization, its mission is to present classical music of the highest standard at affordable prices and to promote the careers of young artists through performance opportunities. Three of the greatest tribute artists from Las Vegas bring the undeniable sound of three musical legends to the stage of Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson influenced a whole generation of fans, but they also influenced each other and the music industry as a whole. Brian Duprey (Frank Sinatra), Bill Cherry (Elvis Presley) and Brandon Jones (Michael Jackson) come together March 30 to recreate the sounds and energy of three of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century, backed by the Gulf Coast Symphony. When Brian Duprey sings Frank Sinatra classics, those listening might swear they were hearing Ol' Blue Eyes himself. At least that's what happened to Frank's own daughter, Nancy Sinatra, when she first heard Brian's
voice on the Howard Stern Show. As the lead actor in the hit musical, "The Rat Pack is Back," Brian spent 10 years perfecting his craft in Las Vegas and in over 200 Performing Arts Centers and Casinos across the country. His lead role and creative development of the show built a 48-state tour and secured the title of Best Tribute Show of Las Vegas in 2014. Bill Cherry takes great pride in each performance. On stage, he completely transforms himself into the King of Rock & Roll. With precise vocals, movements, and an uncanny physical resemblance, Bill's interpretive style is instantly recognizable and embraced by his audience. From the most tender love ballads, to the hard-rockin' show stoppers, Bill delivers each song with impeccable energy, spirit and heart, like that of his mentor. Bill Cherry is the winner of the 2009 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist
Competition in Memphis. Brandon Jones is a Chicago native who has shown a natural talent for performing as the King of Pop - Michael Jackson. As he has matured so has his talent and desire to succeed. He has performed throughout Chicagoland, portraying Michael Jackson from the young age of 6. Since December of 2012, Brandon has starred in the award-winning, international touring show, Moonwalker, the Reflection of Michael. Also, he has performed with the nationally acclaimed show, Legends in Concert as Michael Jackson, since 2014. Tickets for ICONS: A Tribute to Elvis, Sinatra and Michael Jackson on Saturday, March 30 at 7 p.m. start at $29 and may be purchased at www.GulfCoastSymphony.org or by calling the Barbara B. Mann box office at 239-481-4849.
Apollo’s Fire, American Virtuosi at Davis Art Center
The Chamber Music Series features Apollo’s Fire, the chamber ensemble that just won a Grammy for their recording “Song of Orpheus” on Thursday, March 28 at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. American Virtuosi Named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire was founded by its artistic director Jeannette Sorrell, to revive the baroque ideal that music should evoke the various “Affekts” or passions in the listeners. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric. Now in its 11th season, the American Virtuosi concert presents Southwest Florida with a memorable evening of chamber music.
American Virtuosi is the final concert in the Chamber Music Series on Friday, March 29. Each season, renowned American Virtuosi musicians perform in the outstanding first floor Grand Atrium at the Davis Art Center as part of the Chamber Music series. This year’s ensemble features violinist Tai Murray, violinist Peter Winograd, violist Jim Apolloʼs Fire Griffith, cellist Andres Díaz, and pianist Wendy Chen. Purchase tickets to both Apollo’s Fire on March 28 and American Virtuosi on March 29, and receive $20 off the total price. For tickets and info, visit www.sbdac.com or call 239-333-1933. Mastersingers wrap up season April 5 in Bonita
The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers perform their end of season concert, Faure and Vivaldi with the Mastersingers, on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, 9751 Bonita Beach Road SE, Bonita Springs. The choral ensemble will be joined by the Mastersingers Festival Orchestra in a program that includes Gabriel Faure’s stunningly beautiful setting of the requiem along with Antonio Vivaldi’s popular Gloria. In addition to the well-loved masterworks, the repertoire will also include a performance of the winning composition of the inaugural Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company Prize, Before You Kissed Me by Dr. Zack Stanton. The composer competition is the Mastersingers latest 50 - March 2019
community initiative, and Stanton’s work was selected from over 200 pieces submitted. Stanton, a professor at the University of Iowa, set the music for this composition to a Sara Teasdale poem. Says the composer, “It had been a while since I had written for choir and I wanted to try some new things. Since I had already set several sacred texts, I looked for a secular poem. I needed to find a text that I could live with for a while. In Sara Teasdale I found a poem that had great depth but at the same time was also direct and simple.” Dr. Stanton dedicated the work to his wife, Molly. The composer will be in attendance at the concert to accept his prize. This concert marks not only the completion of the group’s 18th season, but also, the end
of Jeff Faux’s nine-year run as artistic director. Faux has overseen incredible growth in the group’s number and quality of singers, in the community outreach projects that the Mastersingers support, and in the collaborations with other area artistic ensembles. Says director Faux, “Through my time with the Mastersingers I have been most proud of how we have connected with the fabric of our community. We have produced concerts with music that has never been performed in Southwest Florida, and we have given singers of all ages the opportunity to sing in a highquality community-based ensemble.” Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults and $15 for students and are available online at www.mastersingersfm.com.

SW Florida Concert Band March 24 The Southwest Florida Concert Band will perform a concert In Celebration of Music on Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road, Fort Myers. Our 50 member community band will open the concert with an arrangement of Music for a Darkened Theater by Danny Elfman. Our guest vocalist, Kathy Lamade, will sing the emotional “You Raise Me Up” and there will be an impressive solo based on the Italian
melody “Napoli.” The band will play a jaunty Irish march and a very powerful overture on the western theme from Silverado. The program will also include memorable music from the film Guardians of the Galaxy that feature the songs “Hooked on a Feeling,” “Come and Get Your Love,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and more. Songwriter Stories features Dee Goodson, Kyle Anne Duggan at the Davis Art Center
Songwriter Stories invites Dee Goodson and Kyle Anne Duggan to tell the tales behind their favorite original songs. Take part in this intimate concert that gives audiences a behind-thescenes look at songwriting on Friday, March 22 at 8 p.m. at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. A part of the Noteworthy Series, Songwriter Stories features Southwest Florida musicians who are part of the emerging scene. Each songwriter plays a set of original music and discusses the craft and inspiration that went into each piece between songs. Dee Goodson is a SW Florida singersongwriter who recently caught the attention of Miami rapper, Trina. Trina just started a new record label called Rockstarr, and Dee is one of the first artists to be signed to the label. Dee’s
new album was released this February under Rockstarr. Kyle Anne Duggan is also a SW Florida native with some big credits to her name. A student of the prestigious Berkeley School of Music in Boston, Kyle Anne released her debut EP Florida in 2017. Since then, she’s opened for several touring acts that have come through Southwest Florida, like Lung, Elisa Sun, and Eli Young Band. ACMA presents Grant Malloy Smith, Tim Farrell, Squirrel Hillbillies and Shawna Caspi in March
March once again has the Americana Community Music Association with seven shows in four locations. The ACMA rents the All Faiths Congregation on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers for its touring artists shows. Each show has a local songwriter open for the headliner. The ACMA also hosts very popular free concerts in three more locations that present three local songwriters in a round robin format.
Shows at All Faiths Grant Malloy Smith will perform March 2 at All Faiths Congregation. Grant Malloy Smith is a singer-songwriter of country and roots music - an artful blend of country, bluegrass, folk and pop music. His most recent album Dust Bowl - American Stories rode the Billboard charts for 17 weeks, including 11 weeks in the top 10 on the Americana/folk album sales chart and #12 on the country album sales chart. The Bible of American Roots music, No Depression magazine, raved: “Grant’s ability to capture the heartland in his music is amazing ... he has written A heartland masterpiece ... lyrics and music as potent as Woody Guthrie ... sent chills down my spine ... bound to become a classic ... A reminder of the darker period of Bob Dylan, and it’s that good, that memorable...” In 2018, he released two singles - first Fly Possum Fly with featured vocalist EmiSunshine, geared toward the young at heart around Christmas time. Then, in honor of our veterans, he released Man of Steel, produced by Grammy winning producer Chuck Ebert, which has been made the official theme song of the National Veterans Foundation. New York transplant Bob Williams opens the show March 2. Bob is the ACMA vice president, board member, driving force behind the Lovers Keys and library shows. Bob has released two CDs over the last four years. When not performing solo you can find him playing weekly with the Pearl Street Band on Fort Myers Beach. The ACMA welcomes Tim Farrell on March 16. When Tim Ferrell first played the ACMA six years ago, they wondered how an almost totally instrumentalist would fare at the ACMA. Would we miss words? Little did we know that Tim would return again and again and also open the door for other instrumental musicians at the ACMA, proving that musicians can paint pictures with music alone. As a performer, Tim entertains audiences internationally. He maintains an active performing schedule, appearing in a variety of concert venues 54 - March 2019
Shawna Caspi such as the Kimmel Center, Montreal Jazz Festival, Carnegie Center, Hard Rock Live, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Memphis Acoustic Guitar Festival, Healdsburg Guitar Festival, Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase and many more. Tim performs as a solo artist and also has shared the stage with such notable artists as Les Paul, George Benson, Jean Luc Ponty, Rick Wakeman, Alex DeGrassi, Jake Shimabukuru, California Guitar Trio, John Sebastian and many more. Opening for Tim is local musical magician, Bill Metts, who paints stories with both words and fantastic fingerpicking. Bill says, “I started playing guitar when I was 19 during the country blues revival of the late 60s. I fell in love with the music of Taj Mahall, Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson and others of that ilk. Just about everything that I have done since then has been in that down home finger-picking style.” Squirrel Hillbillies will perform March 23. From deep within the urban forest of Pittsburgh's East End, the Squirrel Hillbillies often emerge to share their eclectic mix of acoustic roots music, spanning folk, country and blues. Rabidly social and clawingly curious, they relish opportunities to interact with diverse audiences. They perform regularly at festivals and folk clubs as well as non-traditional venues across the US and the UK. Through a collaborative, nonlinear songwriting process, duo partners Jenny Wolsk and Gary
Crouth draw from personal experiences, third-hand stories, and vivid imaginations to craft songs that are unpredictable and quirky yet widely accessible. Their CDs have gotten radio play on stations around the world. Don't miss Ralph Leesburg when he opens the show for the Squirrels. Ralph has been making music for more than 50 years but it has only been the last 20 that he has set intentions on positive music. A little folksy, a little rootsy, a little bluesy, a little bit of rock'n'roll (and something he likes to call metaphysical country). The ACMA welcomes Shawna Caspi on March 30. Shawna Caspi performs solo, but there’s a whole band under her fingertips. A mighty singer, a story sculptor, and a truth teller, she has toured across Canada and the USA and believes in poetry and the power of one person and one instrument, accompanying herself with a remarkable lyrical fingerpicking guitar style. Shawna loves the landscapes of her travels and while weaving them into her songs, she has also been portraying them on canvases, painting one-of-a-kind works of art inspired by the rich scenery she sees on tour. Our own Joe Virga opens the show. Joe is a founding member of the ACMA and a continued passionate supporter of the ACMA. He continues to write awesome songs and perform them. Joe Virga learned to play guitar while serving his country on a helicopter carrier during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he began playing in the Greenwich Village at the legendary Folk City (Gurdies). He learned about the music cooperative while there and became a member. The co-op became a mecca for the second folk music scene in New York City. Joe is a writer and guitar player and a great lead and background vocalist. Songwriters at Sunset The next Songwriters at Sunset will be March 7 at 4:30 p.m at Lovers Key State Park on Fort Myers Beach and feature Ricky Baker, Mike McMillan and Boz. Be sure to give yourself an extra 30 minutes to park and take the tram to the beach. The show is free, and parking is $8 per car. FOLKS (Friends of Lovers Key, Inc.) has joined with the ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. The concerts take place in the large gazebo located right on the beach. Seating is available for the first 80 people. Additional seating is also available on the sand. The FOLKS group will offer a beach BBQ fundraiser at the show. Ricky Baker started playing guitar when he was 45. Musical influences include Bob Dylan, continued on page 55 Happenings Magazine
ACMA
continued from page 54 Neil Young, John Prine, Steve Earle, Mississippi John Hurt and Rolling Stones. Ricky plays locally with 4 Man Trio, and RPM. His songs emerge from personal experience and whimsy. Mike McMillan got his first guitar as a teenager and has been pursuing his musical dreams ever since (in between jobs, 4 kids and several dogs). After his first Doc Watson concert in the 1970s, he was inspired to learn finger picking and then later, many blues songs. Mike can be found performing regularly on Fort Myers Beach with The Pearl Street Band. Boz is a local singer songwriter who performs regularly in the Naples area. Songwriters at the Library The next Songwriters at the Library will be March 9 at 2 p.m. at South County Regional Library, 21100 Three Oaks Parkway in Estero and feature Houseboat Jim, Pete Benson and Doug Chaiet. Americana music and playing guitar has been Pete Bensen’s love, muse, and best friend since childhood., Peter has performed for over 15,000 listeners of his regular StreetJelly.com/PeteBensen online e-concerts. Houseboat Jim started picking and singing back in the late ‘50s in Greenwich Village. Got married, worked, and got back to music about fifteen years ago in Las Vegas. He’s been playing around the Fort Myers area for
the last six years, and he lives on a houseboat. Doug Chaiet is a local singer-songwriter who is known for his fingerpicking style guitar playing.
Songwriters on the Plaza The Lee County Library has joined with The ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. Concerts will take place in the Amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza in downtown Fort Myers off First Street. The March 12 concert at 6 p.m. will feature Carolyn & David Stanley, Pete & Silvia Popravek and Mary Dahl. (see article on page 64). The ACMA hosts a singer songwriters circle every Sunday from 2-4 p.m. All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership required. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10-$15 donation. The ACMA is a non-sectarian not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and ll shows start at 7 p.m. For more info, visit americanacma.org

Chris Lane, Tracy Byrd at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon
The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers continues with its busy schedule of concerts over the next few months. Mark Chesnutt will perform March 1 at The Ranch. Mark Chesnutt is one of country’s true musical treasures. Critics have hailed him as a classic Country singer of the first order and some of Country musics most elite entertainers from George Jones to George Strait echo this sentiment. Mark Chesnutt’s stature is easily gauged; he has 14 No. 1 hits, 23 top ten singles, four platinum albums and five gold records. The Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series welcomes Chris Lane on March 23. Heading into his second album for Big Loud Records, aptly titled Laps Around the Sun, that quest for self discovery was heavy on Chris Lane’s mind. Two whirlwind years of chart toppers and jam-packed shows had gone by for the breakout country talent, but the North Carolina native still felt restless. He found himself looking back to his early days, and back to the reasons he fell in love with music in the first place. Tracy Byrd performs March 30 as part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series. Tracy Byrd became a household name on the country music scene in 1993 when his third single, called “Holdin’ Heaven,” off of his MCA Records, self-titled debut album, hit #1 on the Billboard country charts. The album

Tracy Byrd performs March 30 at The Ranch as part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert Series. also included the remake hit of Johnny Paycheck’s “Someone to Give my Love to” cementing Byrd as a traditional country troubadour. The debut album went on to be certified gold, a reward signifying sales in excess of 500,000 copies. John Michael Montgomery will play April 5 as part of the Sam Galloway Concert Series. John Michael Montgomery has turned an uncanny ability to relate to fans into one of country music’s most storied careers. Behind the string of hit records, the roomful of awards and the critical and fan accolades that have defined his phenomenal success lies a connection that goes beyond his undeniable talent and his proven knack for picking hits. The Sam Galloway Concert Series presents Craig Campbell May 4 at The Ranch. In a day and age defined by instant gratification, it can be hard to remember that good things come to those who wait. But not for Wheelhouse Records singer-songwriter Craig Campbell. Long praised as a modern link to the traditional values of Country’s past, Campbell’s been waiting to release a new collection of music for five long years – and now that wait is finally over. Dylan Scott’s performance on May 11 is also part of the Sam Galloway Ford Concert
Series. With his romantic, platinum certified #1 hit “My Girl,” and gold certified Top 5 smash “Hooked,” Scott has certainly done that, paying his dues and transforming reallife experience into chart-topping success. Now with the album Dylan Scott Deluxe Edition, a new chapter begins. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. Other shows on the concert schedule at The Ranch include Collie Buddz on March 27, Doug Stone & Friends on May 3, The Original Wailers on May 23. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. March 2019 - 59

JJ Grey at Peace River Revival
The annual Peace River Revival welcomes headliner JJ Grey & Mofro on Saturday, March 30 at Laishley Park in Punta Gorda. From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. ACMA and Lee Library present Songwriters on the Plaza March 12
The next Songwriters on the Plaza will be Tuesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. and feature Carolyn & David Stanley, Pete & Silvia Popravek and Mary Dahl. The Lee County Library has joined with The ACMA to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. Concerts will take place in the amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza. Bring a chair or a blanket, shows will be moved indoors depending on weather. If needed the show will be indoor in the South Building that is attached to Talking Books Library. The address is 1651 Lee St., next to the Second Street Parking lot. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs in an intimate songwriters showcase. Be prepared to enjoy an evening of professional quality acoustic Americana music. David and Carolyn Stanley have been playing various genres of music solo and in several different groups since they were teenagers. As a duo in Fort Myers their performances feature David’s original music with David on vocals, finger style or rhythm guitar and harmonica. Carolyn adds vocal harmonies and accompaniment on guitar, banjo, or charango. David’s original songs vary from a tribute to the late Pete Seeger to an amusing love song called “If You Give Me the
Finger.” He has recorded a CD and has had a couple of his songs recorded by other artists. For over 20 years, Mary Dahl performed throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania and D.C. with a quartet known as The Lite Side, playing a five string banjo, acoustic guitar, mandolin, dobro, ukulele and charango. They performed six times at the White House for two different administrations and opened for a sold out performance concert by the Kingston Trio at the Carlisle Theatre in Pa. After moving to Fort Myers in 2007, she joined ACMA and found a welcoming venue for her original songs, all of which are upbeat and inspiring. Silvia and Pete Popravek have been playing music together for the past twelve years, originally as members of Skeeterland Band and Banyan Bluegrass, then gradually developing into a guitar and mandolin duo that incorporates a variety of musical genres, including folk, country, Cuban/Latin, and , yes, bluegrass. Always experimenting, adapting, and progressing from their roots in rock and traditional Cuban music, Silvia and Pete have created a style that is uniquely theirs, while remaining faithful to the many sources of their music. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse
With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

Visual artistry thrives in four Florida Keys shows
The Florida Keys are renowned for having a large population of visual artists, while creative spirits from other places come to experience the ever-changing tropical light and depict a uniquely engaging locale. Visitors seeking fine artwork can find it throughout the island chain. As well as being displayed in galleries from Key Largo to Key West, distinctive artistry can be seen in public buildings and spaces, art shows, outdoor markets and exhibitions. Among the 2019 season’s offerings are four showcases of images by artists ranging from members of the Keys’ vibrant creative community to those born in neighboring Cuba.
Theatre’s production of “La Cage aux Folles,” which coincides with the exhibit. Artwork is for sale with 20 percent of the purchase price donated to the theater. In addition, art lovers can purchase tickets for a chance to win one of two original framed watercolors donated by acclaimed artists Nancy Murphree Davis and Charles Passarelli. The drawing is set for Wednesday, April 10, and ticket holders need not be present to win. For more details, visit www.fkwcs.com.
Discover the Connections Project Mural A 24-foot mosaic mural featuring art by more than 300 Florida Keys artists and arts supporters debuted in late January, and it’s touring the island chain to celebrate the connection between the community and local cultural initiatives. The Connections Project mural, spearheaded by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and titled "A Mosaic of the Keys," began its tour in Key Largo. Subsequently it travels to Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and finally Key West, with a reception celebrating its arrival at each display site. The mural is made up of individual canvases measuring 6 inches square — all provided to local professional artists and creative residents for them to adorn as they chose. The completed canvases feature art in mediums including painting, photography, mixed media and three-dimensional construction. Once the Connections Project tour is over in May, art lovers can acquire individual canvases through a unique “random choice” purchase process. Proceeds benefit Keys artists and arts organizations through the council’s grants including the new “Art Builds Community” program focused on cultural equity. For a schedule of tour dates and locations, visit www.keysarts.com.
Explore Visions of Cuba People eager to sample the spirit and ambiance of the island that lies just 90 miles from Key West can do so during a distinctive art exhibition titled “Visions of Cuba.” The longstanding cultural connection between Key West and Cuba comes alive in the exhibit, which features contemporary creations by more than 50 prominent Cuban artists who now live in locations around the world. Fittingly, the venue for “Visions of Cuba” is the historic Gato Building at 1100 Simonton St. The imposing structure was originally a prominent cigar factory where a large team of skilled Cuban workers produced tens of thousands of cigars each day. The unique exhibit is presented by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez. Many of the talents whose pieces are included attended Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte, Cuba’s leading art academy, and have par“Confidence II” by Sandra Rodriguez and Emmanuel Diaz is ticipated in the prestigious Havana part of the Visions of Cuba exhibit in Key West.
