Party at sea

We recently went on a musical journey back to the 1970s when Kathy and I embarked on the fourth year of the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise, aka the “Feel Good Party at Sea” with 2,000 of our “friends” onboard the Celebrity Infinity.

It was a week filled with concerts, fellowship, eating, dancing, stories, celebrities, Q & As, demonstrations, panel discussions, contests, costumes, friendships and live music.

StarVista Live, the folks behind this cruise and several other themed music cruises, knows how to transport people back to a time of great music and relive old memories.

As many of you may know, I attend and cover a lot of concerts here in Southwest Florida as part of my job, but this cruise is so much more than a regular concert. Yes, the nightly concerts in the main theatre are nice (since the venue holds only about 1,000 people). We saw performances by Jefferson Starship, America, Cheap Trick, John Lodge (Moody Blues), Randy Bachman (founder of The Guess Who and BTO), Don Felder (formerly of The Eagles), Jason Scheff (formerly of Chicago) and Todd Rundgren. What’s not to like about that.

But wait, take that one step further. On this cruise you get to meet them, talk to them, get autographs and photos with them and hear the stories behind the music. This cruise is like having a back stage pass or VIP badge all week long.

StarVista Live is very particular about who they choose to be on the ship each year. The artists must be willing to perform and interact with the fans. They don’t just do their gig and lock themselves in their cabin (StarVista executive producer Alan Rubens would not permit that to happen).

Thus, we get an ultimate ‘70s experience.

I lost count how may times I ran into Todd Rundgren, Jason Scheff, Burleigh & Mary from Ambrosia or Jerry & Dewey from America in the buffet line. (Hey, they have to eat, too.) And they are all so gracious to take a moment to talk to passengers.

Okay, so you think that sounds pretty awesome so far. Well, there’s more.

Besides the main stage concerts, the ship has a smaller venue that holds about 400 people called Constellations Lounge.

This more intimate venue was perfect for performances by Ambrosia, Rita Coolidge, John Ford Coley, Peter Beckett’s Player,

Stephen Bishop and Pablo Cruise. Some of the tribute artists also performed in this space. In this venue, your seated only feet away from the stage. You almost feel like you are on stage with the artist.

Of course, you can’t have a rock music cruise without concerts on the pool deck.

That stage was active day and night.

Edgar Winter Band did both of their shows on that stage, while others did one inside and one outside.

There was even a wedding ceremony/concert on the pool deck for Joe Puerta (of Ambrosia) and Shannon Killala.

The smallest venue (Rendezvous Lounge) holds about 230 folks and is perfect for some of the tribute bands, music trivia contests and Family Feud game shows between passengers and celebrities.

By the way, this year’s tribute artists were top notch. Three returning favorites were Bees Gees Gold and Queen Nation.

Tribute newcomers included ABBA The Concert, ZZ Twist and Lets Zep. Other star performers who helped fill the musical gaps of bands not on board included LSB Experience, Hal Bruce, Joel Mason, The Newbees and the Bad Ass Brass Band, Kimberly Sunstrum, The Jukebox and All You Need is Love.

Finally, the panel discussions each morning were phenomenal. The first panel featured Randy Bachman, John Ford Coley and Corey Lerios from Pablo Cruise. Next panel was Jefferson Starship, America and Stephen Bishop.

Then came one with Don Felder, Edgar Winter, Todd Rundgren and John Lodge, and the final featured Ambrosia, Peter Beckett, Rita Coolidge and Maxine Nightingale (who stowed away from the disco cruise).

Now for the best part, they are doing it again in 2021 (Feb. 27 - March 6 out of Miami). So far, the lineup includes Foreigner, Air Supply, 10cc, The Guess Who, BJ Thomas, WAR, Jim Messina, The Family Stone, Melissa Manchester, Pure Prairie League, Peter Asher and Badfinger ... just for starters. Urinetown continues its successful run on the Cultural Park Theater stage through March 8.

Now granted for those who have not seen the show yet, most Americans would have said that the title alone made Urinetown not just a bad idea for a musical but a really terrible idea for a musical. But this Tony Award show stormed Broadway in 2001 and has delighted audiences ever since.

Urinetown advances a seemingly wacky premise that nevertheless rings true: In some not-too distant future — in which public services have all been privatized and there’s an even a greater gulf separating rich from poor — severe water shortages have transformed peeing from a right to a privilege.

Paul Todd takes our concert stage with his tribute “Romancing The American Standards” on March 13, 14 and 15 for three performances only. Paul Todd tributes the work of such legends as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow, Bobby Darin and more with his many celebrity impersonations and

amazing voice.

Next up in March is the comedy The Owl and the Pussycat by Bill Manhoff. The story takes place in a San Francisco loft, aspiring author Felix focuses his binoculars on a prostitute plying her trade. He complains to the landlord, has her evicted, and finds trouble pounding on his door in the form of Doris, not a prostitute, but an aspiring “model and actress, thank you very much.”

She figures he owes her a bed for the night, an arrangement that leads to hilarity.

Alan Alda and Diana Sands took the roles on Broadway, George Segal and Barbra Streisand on film. And now at Cultural Park Theater the roles are taken on by Chantelle Kareem BloiseElmahmoudi as Doris and Steve Stefanik as Felix.

Under the guidance of director Gwen Salata, CPT’s audiences are in for a wild ride and lots of laughs as Owl and The Pussycat opens March 20 and plays through March 29.

The Music Man took Broadway by storm in 1957, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In the show, fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill brings trouble to River City, Iowa when he cons the townspeople into buying instruments for an imaginary band – but his plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when his heart is stolen by the town librarian. Featuring the unique distinction of having book, lyrics, and music written by the same person, The Music Man was inspired by Meredith Willson’s childhood in Iowa. Songs from the show became instant classics, like “Seventy-Six Trombones”, “Gary, Indiana”, and “Till There Was You”, which was eventually covered by The Beatles and remains the only song from a Broadway show released by the band. Charlotte Players offer wide variety in March

Emily Dickinson called March “the month of expectation,” and expectations are high as Charlotte Players fills the month with some powerful, exciting entertainment.

The shows begin on March 5, when the brilliant jazz vocalist Kitt Moran presents “Johnny Mercer: An Intimate Portrait,” with husband Mike Moran’s quintet, at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in Punta Gorda. The one-night-only show starts at 7:30 p.m.

To anyone familiar with popular music over the past 70 years, Johnny Mercer needs no introduction. A lyricist and composer, he wrote and performed many of the most popular hits of his time, including “Moon River,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Autumn Leaves,” “That Old Black Magic,” “Satin Doll” and more. He wrote the lyrics to more than 1,500 songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway shows.

He received 19 Oscar nominations and won four Best Original Song Oscars. The Charlotte Performing Arts Center is located on the campus of Charlotte High School at 701 Carmalita St., Punta Gorda.

Valli and the Four Seasons, the iconic pop band that enjoyed international success in the 1960s and 1970s and reclaimed the spotlight with the 2006 Tony Award-winning play Jersey Boys. The Players show, “Let’s Hang On!” honors both the group and the play with 10 seasoned entertainers who take audiences on a musical journey through the career of one of the most successful bands of all time. The show is set for 7:30 p.m. on March 10 at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center.

Add Neil Simon to the list of big names represented in Charlotte Players productions in March. Neil Simon’s Proposals opens on March 12 for 15 performances at the Langdon Playhouse, 1182 Market Circle, Port Charlotte. Proposals, a comedy-drama, is Simon’s 30th play, following the likes of Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys and many more.

This classic delightfully recalls the last time the Hines family gathered in the summer of 1953 in the Poconos. Burt Hines is convalescing from a second heart attack and eagerly awaits the arrival of the ex-wife he still loves. Daughter Josie has just bro-

ken her engagement. Clemma, the black housekeeper at the center of the action, casts an astute eye on the complications while faced with her own unresolved past.

Bill Olson is the executive producer, with Jesse Reter-Choate directing.

The Charlotte Players’ March calendar concludes with a return engagement by Denise Fennell as “Sister” in Sister’s Easter Catechism on March 19 at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center. Celebrate the Easter season with Sister as she answers timeworn questions like “Why isn’t Easter the same day every year?” and “Will my bunny go to heaven?”

Part pageant and wHOLY hysterical, this latest Late Nite Catechism show unearths the origins of Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, Easter bonnets, Easter baskets, and of course those yummy Easter Peeps. Sister answers questions about pet heaven and those adorable baby chicks. Classroom participation is a must, so don’t forget to wear your Easter bonnet and join Sister for this seasonal treat.

Kinky Boots on stage at Broadway Palm

Kinky Boots struts onto the Broadway Palm stage now through April 4. This high-energy musical is the winner of every major Best Musical Award, including the Tony Award, the Grammy Award and London’s Olivier Award.

Based on true happenings, this heartwarming story tells of Charlie, a factory owner struggling to save his shoe business and Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos.

Choreographer Chris Kane, was recently on tour with the Broadway production of Kinky Boots for two years as the Dance Captain and Swing. He also just finished performing in Ogunquit Playhouse’s production of Kinky Boots as an Angel.

Art Quilters Unlimited at ACT Gallery

Arts for ACT Gallery will host an opening reception for its new March exhibits Friday, March 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. during Art Walk.

Art Quilters Unlimited members will exhibit fiber art responses to two creative challenges at Arts for ACT Gallery March 6 – 30 in the main gallery. The “Fifteen!” challenge celebrates the 15th anniversary of the first meeting of AQU in 2004 at Arts for ACT. The works are all 15 inch square and each is a unique expression of subject matter, approach to composition, media, color, stitching, and embellishment.

“Resist: Interpretations and Techniques” is a separate challenge that asked the artist to interpret the idea of “resist” politically, socially, personally or from a fiber art perspective. In fiber art terms, resist techniques (such as shibori and batik) involve any of several methods of creating patterns on cloth by binding, clamping or stitching.

These art works are diverse in concept and execution and illustrate the freedom of creative expression that Art Quilters Unlimited encourages in our fiber art community.

Logan Goodmanson was born in St. Paul, Minn., in 2000.

He was inspired by his brother's drawings of comic book panels and covers and wanted to do the same thing. After moving to Florida, he became a lot more interested in drawing, especially during middle school.

Logan Goodmanson He graduated from the Lehigh Senior High School's Center for the Arts in 2019 and has worked with several graphic designers, musicians and even illustrated a book.

Anna Fischler, a junior at Fort Myers High School, has been a local resident for 13 years. Growing up in this coastal town, she has developed a love for the area’s waters and natural beauty, but also its genuine and interesting inhabitants. Those connections, she hopes to convey through the work in this exhibit.

Sanibel Lions Club fine art & craft fest March 27 & 28

Surf on over to Sanibel to check out the Sanibel Lions Club Fine Art and Craft Festival on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festival will feature the very unique art of Laura and Jimmy Rajner. The Rajners create magnificent works of art from repurposed surfboards made into art for a better planet.

Laura Rajner and her husband, Jim, started carving and decorating out-of-commission surfboards 6-years ago after he went through a triple bypass “The doctor opened him up and pumped his heart to bring him back to life, they say when a person dies that something can happen in your brain and it can trigger something in your brain that hasn’t been used before,” Laura said.

And for Laura’s husband, he focused in on creativity. The long road to recovery forced Rajner to explore new hobbies. He started going to the beach and drawing in the sand with sticks and rakes, eventually drawing a crowd. Onlookers stopped and stared as Rajner outlined a large octopus in the sand.

Now, the couple that has a second chance is giving a second life to these boards. “We had 12 surfboards in the garage and we read it takes a million years to break down a surfboard so we just started carving them.” He turned that octopus he drew in the sand into inspiration for his first carved board. “Then as fast and we would get one done the neighbors would buy them,” Rajner said. “We do this for a reason, it comes from our heart.

You want to share it, you love what you do, you really want to share it. It’s important to us that we can make something beautiful to share with the people that come to the events.

making the boards evenly, Laura says no one just paints or just carves.

DAAS showcases Maria Ramona Sanchez ART

DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts features the whimsical works of Maria Ramona Sanchez in March.

The exhibition is a collection of surrealist pieces, created within recent years. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 6 from 6 to 10 p.m., in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The pieces will be on display through March 28.

Maria Ramona Sanchez was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1952. She graduated from University of Havana with a degree in Spanish literature. She is a self-taught artist painting with oils on wood, canvas and handmade paper. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Latin America, the United States and Europe, and also participated in important art fairs (Chicago, Art Miami, Art Santa Fe, Red Dot Art) and museum exhibitions (MOLA, Long Beach, Santa Fe Museum of History in New Mexico, Naples Museum of Art and National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana). Many of her paintings are part of important private collections worldwide.

She has made big format works that are part of public and private places.

She has also illustrated books for children and youngsters (Scholastic/Lectorum in US and Everest, Spain). Currently, she lives and works in Southwest Florida, United States.

The artist shares, “The moon lives in its secular cycles and rhythms. Creatures of diverse origin flow with it in a cosmic dance. With its intangible light fills hearts with magic.

Hirdie Girdie welcomes Muffy Clark Gill Hirdie Girdie Gallery announces Muffy Clark Gill as its March guest artist.

Muffy is a mixed media artist who creates framed paintings on silk using the Indonesian dye and wax resist process of batik, or the similar Japanese process known as rozome.

Muffy was originally introduced to batik on a trip to Uganda in 1970, and her lifelong love of travel and of experiencing different cultures provides the inspiration for her art. She has been recognized locally and nationally in exhibits, invitational shows, and art fairs and festivals, and she has won many awards.

After seven years of learning everything he can about our local wildlife, he is finally ready for his first wildlife exhibit.

As always, Quinn applies his self-taught style of photography and strives to find beautiful and unique moments to capture. He finds peace and tranquility as he hikes and explores nature with his camera over his shoulder. “We are very fortunate here in Florida to be able to experience beautiful wildlife in the isolated, rural areas or right in our very own back yards,” says Quinn.

On Sunday at 3 p.m., there will be $250 in youth art awards presented at the show as young artists are exposed to the rules and entrepreneurship of doing art shows for a living. Each youth art winner also receives the same, twofoot long colorful gorgeous ribbon that the professional artists receive.

The deadline to apply is March 5.

COCO Art Gallery to feature multiple artists COCO Art Gallery located at 8074 Mediterranean Drive, Estero, in the Coconut Point Mall (next to Panera Bread) will showcase work by members of the Southwest Florida Watercolor Society March 3 - 17.

Barbara Weems will be the featured artist March 7 and 8. Barbara Weems took painting classes in school and college and one at the Art Institute in Chicago; always loved abstraction. She has sold some of her abstract pieces to Europeans, "so guess I am internationally collected," she says.

Weems has lived in Florida most of her life, and here in southwest Florida since 1992. As well as Florida, she also lived in Atlanta and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Currently she lives on a small horse farm and has many dogs and a hubby. A master gardener, she had a weekend radio show about gardening for three years on WINK talk radio.

Judy Ladd will be the featured artist March 14 and 15. Judy Ladd graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA degree in art, she received an MFA from Notre Dame. She worked at the South Bend Art Center teaching children and Barbara Weems 24 - March 2020

adult classes, as well as being the faculty representative to the board for years. Her first teaching assignment was at Darden school in first grade and later moved to LaSalle High School as an art instructor. At the high school level, she was art department chairman, worked on The Scholastic Art Awards and the Third Congressional Art Competition which her student won the district award which was presented in New York.

During that time, she opened up a co-op gallery which housed 30 local artists.

Throughout the years, she served as president of the Northern Indiana Artists and also became involved in the St, Joseph Watercolor Society in which she ran their Leeper Park Art Fair for 24 years.

The gallery’s monthly reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Complimentary wine, food, and entertainment will be provided.

Heidi Schmitz, Stephen Hayford at Davis Art Center ART

The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center offers two captivating art exhibitions in March. The Grand Atrium will feature impressionist artist Heidi Schmitz in Munich Meets Fort Myers.

Born in Munich, Germany, Heidi Schmitz uses colors and techniques that reflect a European flair not commonly found in North America. Her style of mixed media abstracts strike a wonderful balance between form and color. She employs various layers of acrylic paint and elements of coffee, tar, sand, rust, and wax that gives these works an unusual depth. Her paintings show charming landscapes, picturesque views, and colorful still lives.

Heidi teaches regular courses with renowned artists in Italy, Austria, Germany, and in the U.S. She also lectures at the People’s University in Munich on the aquarelle technique.

Stephen Hayford has been documenting community issues for more than 20 years.

In that time he has photographed several world leaders, important cultural events, devastating storms and historical meetings.

Hayford has worked with The Palm Beach Post, Sun-Sentinel, the Miami Herald, Rocky Mountain News and other newspapers and wire services in Colorado, Ohio, Missouri and Florida. He became wellversed in Southwest Florida issues cover-

His work is noted for his versatility with great attention to light, detail and decisive moments. He is now applying these skills, along with exceptional talents in conceptualization, to markets beyond journalism.

Hayford creates elaborately detailed dioramas which he populates with customized action figures which are less than four inches tall. He then photographs these unique scenes with great attention to subtle gestures and compositional storytelling.

Peace River Art Festival March 21 & 22

The annual Peace River National Art Festival will take place March 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Laishley Park in downtown Punta Gorda. The festival, hosted by the Visual Arts Center, is Charlotte County’s leading outdoor fine art event.

Art glass, fiber arts, jewelry, leather goods, metalwork, oil paintings, photography, pottery, sculpture, abstracts and watercolor will be represented by more than 60 artists from within the community and out of state. The fine art, handcrafted goods and exquisite crafts will be complimented by a selection of tasty foods, wine and beer.

Every year, two remarkable artists are nominated to share the spotlight during the festival. Artists Lori Potts and Kathy Wood have been selected as this year’s featured artists. Lori and Kathy’s work will be featured at the festival and can be viewed at the Visual Arts Center’s galleries leading up to the festival.

Lori Potts is a versatile artist based in Punta Gorda. She uses her art to express her passion for nature, beauty, and color. Her mediums range from oil paint, acrylic paint, alcohol ink, resin epoxy, and gold leaf.

Kathy Wood is a mixed media artist producing functional art. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Kent State University. Working small, Kathy has an eye for design in the construction of her mandalas. Hand drawn intricate design patterns that are repeated in a circular format and accented with color. All Florida exhibit at the Alliance

The Alliance for the Arts’ March exhibition, 34th Annual Juried All Florida, will be on display March 6 through March 28 with an opening reception on March 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 10091 McGregor Blvd. This exhibition features pieces created by artists working in a wide variety of media from all over the state of Florida. The juried entries come together for an exciting exhibition

representing today’s Florida artists.

The March 6 event is free to attend and features a live performance by Gulf Coast Symphony. Cape Coral Art Center hosts annual Art Focus

The Cape Coral Art Center invites the community to participate in the 35th Annual Art Focus Festival on Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During this free day of art in Rubicond Park, attendees can see the annual juried student exhibition "Art Focus" with a free reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., participate in a "peoples choice award" as well as enjoy fascinating class demonstrations, an outdoor fine arts sale showcasing the work by local artists and tour the studios.

The award ceremony for the Art Focus Student Exhibition will take place at 12 p.m. This is the perfect opportunity for the public to check out what the Cape Coral Art Center has to offer!

The Cape Coral Art Center is located at 4533 Coronado Parkway in Rubicond Park and is owned and operated by the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department. Shell Point art show March 20 & 21

New art exhibits open at Cape Coral Library

The art exhibitions are sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library and are designed to afford local artists the opportunity to share their work in a public forum.

Norman Cannon’s photographs, which cover a variety of subject matter, will be exhibited on all the walls of the gallery.

His style is eclectic, operating on the premise if it looks good shoot it. “Photoshopping” is not in his vocabulary, since he believes in showing life’s beauty even if it may include defects.

Cannon was selected by jury to display in the Cape Coral Arts Festival and the Estero Arts Festival.

Charles and Christine Dekkers are proud to show off their palm sheath art in two of the gallery’s display cases. They refer to their unique art form as “a labor of love” and stress the fact that each of the creations is made from recycled, organic and natural materials. This col-

lection was inspired by the foliage downed during hurricane Irma, and the goal is to recycle nature’s gifts. The couple utilizes palm sheaths that have been soaked, steamed, shaped, sewn and dried plus other natural items such as dried flowers, abalone shells, Brazilian wood and gem stones.

Tom Higgins’ brightly colored boats, made from repurposed wood, will be on display in the large case in the gallery. The inspiration for the salvage ships came from a simple driftwood wall hanging he saw on the Internet. He took the concept and created his own design using discarded wood from construction sites and adding recycled or little-used items and found objects.

The Cape Coral Library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace, and the current exhibition may be viewed during regular library business hours March 3 through May 7.

Sanibel Music Festival MUSIC

The Sanibel Music Festival seven-concert series opens this year with renowned chamber groups, award-winning piano recital and vocal ensemble of the highest caliber.

“The highlight performance March 28 is the multiple award-winning Emerson String Quartet, honored with nine Grammys,” said Jana Stone, Sanibel Music Festival president. “Chamber music enthusiasts will not want to miss the Boston Chamber Society featuring internationally popular harpist Ann Hobson Pilot on March 10 or the Gould Trio, featuring award-winning Robert Plane on clarinet March 21.”

Sanibel Music Festival concerts are held at 7:30 p.m. on select Tuesdays and Saturdays in March at the Congregational U.C.C., 2050 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island. The venue is intimate, with excellent acoustics, accessibility, and well-lit, on-site parking. General admission tickets are $50.

Charlotte Chorale to perform Haydn to Hamlisch March 15

Experience the brilliance of composers Franz Joseph Haydn and Marvin Hamlisch with The Charlotte Chorale at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in Punta Gorda.

The award winning Charlotte Chorale will once again showcase both classical and modern composers accompanied by symphonic musicians. The Americana Community Music Association is Fort Myers home for original Americana music, has eight shows this month (four at the listening room and four on the road).The ACMA provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/folk community. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. Most shows are a $15 donation at the door. The ACMA rents the All Faiths Congregation on McGregor for most shows.

The ACMA welcomes Mean Mary on March 7. Mary plays 11 instruments and has recorded 16 albums. Today, she produces music, produces videos (her YouTube videos have received over 15 million visits), tours extensively across the US and overseas, is co-writing a novel trilogy about the music world, and is an endorsing artist for Deering Banjos. The Deerings have named her their Goodtime Ambassador. Mary plays 11 instruments and has recorded 16 albums, her newest being Cold. There is not room here to tell the whole life story of Mean Mary, but if you

The ACMA promotes local artists who perform their own original songs. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs. In March, the ACMA goes on the road four times: Robert Bidney and Ray Cerbone will perform March 4 at 2 p.m. at the Captiva Memorial Library, 11560 Captiva Lane.

The Friends of Lovers Key and the ACMA presents Songwriters at Sunset on March 5 at 4:30 p.m. featuring the Pearl Street Band. With fret board fireworks and lyrical endeavours he will melt your heart- strings, make your toes tapping and your jaws hanging open. Richard's ever growing repertoire comprises a wide variety of music from classical Bach to Beatles pop. It includes Scott Joplin Rags just like Sousa marches, Chopin, Mozart and fiddle tunes. It ranges from jazz standards to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and to Django Reinhardt gypsy swing, not to mention his intriguing originals. He delivers both, lightning fast barnburners and beautiful ballads, occasionally spiced with vocals. The March 14 show will open with Mike McMillan.

Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Winner Daniel Boling shares experiences from a life well-lived in places as far-ranging as Okinawa, Japan, and Padre Island, Texas. This balladeer/songwriter brings his friendly tenor, fingerstyle guitar, frailed banjo, and beautifully-crafted story songs to delighted audiences throughout the U.S., Western Europe, New Zealand

and Australia in over one hundred shows a year, from house concerts and listening rooms to major festivals (Kerrville, Winfield, Woody Guthrie, and others). Elizabeth Lockhart will open the March 21 show.

Bill and Kate Isles will perform March 27 at the listening room. They are an acoustic singer/songwriter duo based in Duluth, Minnesota. Using a wide variety of musical styles, their performances carry audiences through a broad landscape of experiences from metaphorical worlds to small town family stories and to zany comedy.

Consummate performers, they are known for their catchy melodies and memorable songs. They have a deep-seated love for the audience, and each other, and it shines before, during, and after the performance.

They tour nationally, presenting their profound songs for audiences large and small, from house concerts to festival stages and everything in between. The March 27 show opens with Joyce Knake.

Additionally, the ACMA holds a singer songwriters circle every Sunday 2 - 4 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels.

Lee County Community Band plays March 8

Oh, the fun of being just a wee bit Irish. On March 8, the Lee County Community band will present an afternoon of beloved Irish melodies, a tribute to Glen Miller, spirited marches and more. The concert is set for 3 p.m. at Cape Coral High School.

Under the direction of Richard Bradstreet, the program will feature Pennywhistle Jig, Best Loved Irish Melodies, and Macnamara’s Band. The band also will perform Clarinet Candy, American Salute, and highlights from West Side Story.

The band performs six concerts between November and April; all take place at Cape Coral High School, 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd., beginning at 3 p.m. The programs are free (donations welcome) and open to the public.

Musical Moments: Decade of Rebellion ‘60s takes place Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m. in Moe Auditorium and features the Night Train Band.

The Weight Band will perform Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Hinman Auditorium. SW Florida Concert Band plays March 15

The Southwest Florida Concert Band will perform a concert Swinging into Spring featuring music from Glen Miller to Michael Bublé on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road.

The band will open the concert with an upbeat arrangement called Jump Swing Fever where you will want to get up and dance in the aisle. Hear in a Miller Mood which features many of Glenn Miller’s favorite melodies to swing along to and a tribute to Sammy Davis.

They will also perform a swing band arrangement of Duke Ellington and the rocking, soul music of Ray Charles.

Vocalist Debra Tosh will sing George Gershwin’s memorable “S’Wonderful” and “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway musical Wicked. The concert will also include the driving drum feature by Benny Goodman.

Koe Wetzel Koe Wetzel is best known as the leader of country music group “Koe Wetzel and the Konvicts”. The group released their debut album “Out on Parole” in 2015 before releasing their breakthrough record, Noise Complaint, in 2017. Koe lived in Pittsburg, Texas, before moving to Stephenville, Texas. He attended Texas Southern University. His song “February 28th, 2016” became the most listened-to country song in several Texas cities in 2017, including Richardson, Plano and Arlington.

Reading Festival March 7

More than 20 acclaimed and best-selling authors are coming to Fort Myers to talk about their books and meet fans at the 21st annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the downtown Fort Myers Regional Library campus, 2450 First St. The Southwest Florida Reading Festival has a diverse line-up of nationally recognized authors for adults, teens and children. This free, fun event is loved by attendees who come back year after year. The fans attend to hear and meet best-selling authors, participate in contests and activities and find the latest and greatest in books, technology and accessories. In addition to author appearances and autographing sessions, there will be food truck vendors, storytelling programs, arts, crafts, youth writing and coloring contests and a free book for every child and teen.

“The festival invites popular authors to participate by sharing their real life experiences, thought processes and the evolution of their characters,” said Lee County Library System director Mindi Simon. “It is fascinating to hear the story behind the story.”

In addition to the daylong community event, Lee County Library System hosts a number of preview events at library branches leading up to the festival. Among the activities offered this year are book signings at various branches by New York Times best-selling authors Mary HoneyB Morrison, Chris Pavone, Peggy Rowe and Lisa Unger in addition to a Local Author Day

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with this year’s festival authors while enjoying a buffet dinner overlooking the Caloosahatchee River. Dean Park house tours March 28

Dean Park, one of the oldest subdivisions in Fort Myers, will celebrate its 100th birthday on March 28 with a historic house tour of ten bungalows and other historic homes. They will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and refreshments and a Dixieland band will add to the festivities.

Dean Park, just east of downtown Fort Myers, was designated as a historic district in 1997 and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The subdivision’s official birthday is May 1, 1920, the date on which John Morgan Dean, a wealthy developer from Rhode Island, recorded his map entitled “Dean’s Subdivision” with the Lee County Clerk of the Courts.

The “Dean’s Subdivision” map showed 91 lots, including nine riverfront lots on First Street (now Palm Beach Avenue) that Dean sold for as much $40,000 at the height of the Florida real estate boom. Other major streets in the subdivision were named 62 - March 2020

“Rhode Island Avenue” after his home state and “Providence Avenue” after his hometown.

The oldest house in the subdivision is the two-story Craftsman style home built in 1916 at 2674 Providence.

Each home on tour has its own story, which will be told in the tour booklet.

Today, Dean Park Historic District includes 82 homes and is located off Second Street, just a few blocks east of downtown Fort Myers. A history of all the homes in Dean Park can be found on its website. Click on the “Interactive Map” to see a photo of each home and its history.

The Lee County Library has joined with The ACMA (Americana Community Music Association), to offer free acoustic concerts of all original music. Concerts take place in the amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza. Bring a chair or a blanket, shows will be moved indoors depending on weather.

The ACMA is a Fort Myers based not for profit that promotes local artists who perform their own original songs. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs in an intimate songwriters showcase.

The next Songwriters on the Plaza will be Tuesday, March 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and feature Carlene Thissen, Karen Cohen and Carolyn Stanley.

Carlene Thissen is a singer/songwriter from Naples, where she performs at various interesting venues, including a recent Cattle Drive in Immokalee. Her voice is reminiscent of Joan Baez and Bonnie Raitt, depending on what she's singing, and her 64 - March 2020

songs range from ballads to boot-stomping country rock. Carlene's songs are frequently featured on Women Of Substance Radio.

Carolyn Stanley is usually heard in Fort Myers backing up singer songwriters Mary Dahl or David Stanley, singing harmony and playing guitar, banjo or charango. Carolyn sings and picks roots music, country blues, and originals by singer songwriters she knows. Carolyn began singing as a child.

Her family always sang on long trips in the car with songs of the Weavers being some of their favorites. She feels blessed to have inherited her father’s talent to pick out harmony parts easily. As a teenager she began learning to finger pick the guitar from her older brother who was playing Mississippi John Hurt and Dave Van Ronk tunes.

Karen Cohen got her start playing the guitar in the late 60s, learning to fingerpick the folk songs of Joan Baez, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Crosby Stills & Nash ..to name a few. In more recent years, Karen worked on arrangements for Country Style Blues like Memphis Minnie and some old Delta Blues Slide Guitar.

During these first Guitar Revival years, she was affectionately penned “The Acoustic Queen” at open mics and jam circles around the Punta Gorda, and Englewood communities.

Harborside to reopen as Caloosa Sound Convention Center

Tampa-based Mainsail Lodging & Development announced Jan. 8 the former Harborside Event Center will reopen later this year as the Caloosa Sound Convention Center & Amphitheater. Located in downtown Fort Myers, adjacent to the highly anticipated 243-room, Luminary Hotel & Co., the fully renovated Caloosa Sound Convention Center will feature 40,000 square feet of function space, including a riverfront terrace. An additional 8,000 square feet of adaptable indoor and outdoor function space will be available at Luminary Hotel, expected to open August 2020.

“We’re excited to reveal the newly-named Caloosa Sound Convention Center & Amphitheater, which takes its name from the Caloosahatchee river bordering the property,” said Bob Megazzini, general manager of Luminary Hotel & Co. “Once the renovation is complete, the new center will add to the excitement of the growing downtown, helping to put Fort Myers on a new level as a destination city for business and tourism.”

The Caloosa Sound Convention Center renovations include major updates to the interior and exterior of the building, including a new roof, windows and exterior walls. Numerous public

spaces throughout the venue have also been updated to improve accessibility, add more flexible and transformable spaces, and elevate design aspects. New to the center is a ground floor space that was reconfigured to add more boardrooms, administrative offices which have been added on the second floor, and a new riverfront terrace with breathtaking view of the Caloosahatchee.

An announcement about the new amphitheater will be made soon, including details on the design and projected opening date.

Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade

Artists, builders, assemblers, and aficionados of the wild and wacky won’t want to miss the 5th Annual Stanley Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade, presented by Key West Art & Historical Society and co-produced by Wonderdog Studios, with events set for April 3 - 5 in Old Town Key West.

Participants and spectators alike revel in the familyfriendly, art-inspired, human-powered, mobile sculpture and art-bike parade (think art with parts that move) created in honor of the late Florida Keys rebel folk artist Stanley Papio.
