In Naples, Gulfshore Playhouse presents The Christians April 29 through May 21 at The Norris Center. Clue the Musical opens May 18 at Broadway Palm and runs through June 24. Looking ahead at the 2017-18, some theatre groups have already announced their new season schedules. In this month’s magazine, we give you a glimpse into the next season for TheatreZone and Laboratory Theater. Over the next few months, we will share more of the schedules from our long list of local theatrical venues.

More music for us

As the Snowbirds head for northern destinations, our roadways, art galleries, theatres and restaurants get a little less crowded .... but the live music plays on for all of us locals who live here year round. Happenings Magazine will continue to showcase the local talent (and the national talent) that can be seen and heard in venues big and small this summer. The upcoming months are great opportunities for all of us to patronize eating and drinking establishments that we may have avoided during the height of season. So, enjoy the elbow room when you dine out and remember to tip your server and bartender well. And if you see a tip jar in front of a musician or singer, please don’t hesitate to drop some green paper into that jar for them, too.

Come sail away

In this month’s magazine, you will see the promotion for the second installment of the ‘70s Rock and Romance Cruise which departs from Fort Lauderdale and sails to Jamaica and Grand Cayman aboard the Celebrity Summit March 3 - 8, 2018. What’s probably more important about this particular cruise is who will be aboard the ship. So far, organizers have booked Styx, Michael McDonald, America, War, B.J. Thomas, The Guess Who, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Badfinger featuring Joey Molland and Poco (with more to be added soon). We have teamed up with StarVista Live (the cruise organizers) again this year and are able to offer our magazine readers some savings on their cabin prices (up to $300). You must use the promo code “Happenings” to get those savings. See details in the magazine. Rock on,

Jamie

His songs were made popular by many recording artists, including Melissa Manchester and Olivia Newton-John. He co-wrote Arthur’s theme, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1981. Several years after Allen’s death in 1992, the musical The Boy from Oz was written about his life. It ran on Broadway and earned Hugh Jackman a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. TheatreZone staged The Boy from Oz last spring, with Larry Alexander in the title role. Alexander, who has performed in 18 TheatreZone shows, returns as the lead in Legs Diamond. Laboratory Theater of Florida will present Body & Sold May 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. and May 7 at 2 p.m. in Fort Myers. Over 100,000 young Americans run away from home every year. Within 48 hours of being on the street these teens will be approached by a man posing as a friend, offering food, shelter and love. Most of the time, he will turn out to be a pimp and will sell the young person for commercial sex. The Body & Sold Project is a theater and community initiative to raise awareness about the epidemic of commercial sexual exploitation of our young people and develop strategies to combat it. In 2015, Deborah Lake Fortson and Amy Merrill created a groundbreaking activist network of theaters and communities in the greater Boston area. The goal: to shine a spotlight on the trafficking of American young people for commercial sexual exploitation taking place right in our own backyard. Talk back with community leaders will be held after each performance.

By Michael Moran The Cultural Park Theater will conclude this year’s Broadway season with Don’t Dress for Dinner. Our audiences loved Boeing Boeing in 2016 so much that we’ve decided to bring you the hilarious sequel. Bernard and Robert are back, and they’re up to some even zanier escapades this time around. Using his best friend Robert as an alibi, Bernard plans a perfect romantic weekend with his mistress while his wife is out of town. But when she hears that Robert is visiting, Bernard’s wife starts making plans for a saucy liaison of her own. A cook named Suzette, a lover named Suzanne, and more twists than a corkscrew, this salacious sequel of silly suspicion guarantees a good time. Written by Marc Camoletti and adapted for the stage by Robin Hawdon, the story this time revolves around Bernard and Jacqueline. At the opening of Act 1, Jacqueline is about to go on a trip out of town to see her mother for the weekend. Since Bernard knew she was going to be absent that weekend, he plans in advance to have his mistress, Suzanne, spend the weekend with him. Bernard orders a temporary cook, Suzette, to provide service to them for part of the weekend, and he set up his friend Robert to come over to be his alibi. However, right as Jacqueline is leaving to go see her mother, the telephone

rings again and it is the agency Suzette is hired through, confirming that she is on her way to the house. Jacqueline becomes suspicious and cancels her trip to see her mother. Bernard panics and asks Robert once he arrives to tell Jacqueline that he is having an affair with Suzanne, who is about to arrive at any minute. Bernard’s attempts to cover up his affair makes the show turn into a game of mistaken identity. Don’t Dress for Dinner is directed by Tyler Young, and can be seen at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from May 12 through May 21 at the Cultural Park Theater. Watch for this year’s summer season to be announced soon as we continue to entertain audiences throughout the summer with more comedy and concerts on the CPT stage. Also those of you with children on vacation for the summer, check out the theater’s summer camp programs running with three fun packed three-week sessions from May 30 through July 28. Camp Able provides a program for children with special needs and the three-week summer theatre camp teaches children aged 8 – 18 about all aspects of the theatre with an emphasis on props, costumes, lighting and sound. “You don’t have to be a soap fan to have a great time and lend your support to the kids,” says Berry. “SoapFest is a great weekend that showcases Marco Island’s natural hospitality among white sandy beaches and the Gulf of Mexico to daytime drama actors and fans from around the world,” she adds. Thirteen actors from treasured daytimes shows such as General Hospital, Young and the Restless and Guiding Light are expected to attend, many for return visits. “These actors generously donate their time and talents to raise money for our kids,” explains Berry.

The three days of non-stop festivities include favorites such as the legendary “A Night of Stars” on Saturday, “Cruisin’, Boozin’ and Schmoozin’ with the Stars” on Sunday, “Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash” Sunday night and a “VIP Farewell Brunch” on Monday. A private welcome party for sponsors will be held Friday at 7 p.m. SoapFest Charity Weekend kicks off with A Night of Stars, Saturday, May 27 at 7 p.m. held at the Marco Island Yacht Club, located at the foot of the Jolley Bridge, at 1400 N. Americana Community Music Association welcomes Andru Bemis, Brian Smalley and NMBR11 in May •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It’s another active concert month for the Americana Community Music Association in Fort Myers. Andru Bemis gets things going on May 6. Since 2001, Andru Bemis has wandered the ends, edges and in-betweens of North America like a musical Johnny Appleseed, tuning neglected pianos and bringing joy to audiences wherever he goes. Traveling almost exclusively by foot, thumb, and public transportation, Bemis carries the tools of his trade in his pack: a piano tuning kit and an assortment of battered musical instruments—banjo, fiddle, guitar, and occasional banjolele. His unmistakable voice, exquisitely crafted songs of travel, love and longing, uncommon skill on multiple instruments, quirky humor, and engaging stage presence have endeared him to countless audiences and fellow performers in venues of every size and description. Andru Bemis has twice toured as the opening act and fiddler/banjoist for John Reilly & Friends, featuring actor/comedian/singer John C. Reilly, Becky Stark, and Tom Brosseau. Highlights of these tours include sold-out shows at Lincoln Center, Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music, the first ever public performances in Milwaukee’s historic Miller Caves, beneath the Miller Brewery, and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Bemis has also performed or toured with Dan Bern, Joshua Davis, Tony Furtado, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Charlie Louvin, Over the Rhine, Amanda Palmer, Noam Pikelny, Rachel Ries, Sam Shepard, the Steel Wheels, Sebastian Steinberg, Two Man Gentlemen Band, Willie Watson, Jason Webley, Woody Pines, and many others. Local songwriter and performer HouseBoat Jim Visone opens for Andru Bemis. Houseboat Jim’s musical inspiration starts with his Greenwich Village folk days is the sixties. Always taking on new influences over the year. Whenever House boat Jim is on stage he is sure to light up the room with his original songs. An ACMA repeat performer from Apopka, Fla., Brian Smalley needs little introduction to many. If you don't know Brian, do yourself a favor and run to this concert. Brian Smalley returns to Fort Myers on May 13. By the time he turned 18, his family had moved all across the country more than 20 times. So, it’s no sur-

style and soothing voice along with Emery's endless array of percussion sounds and harmonica interludes provide especially memorable "Homegrown Sounds." The ACMA welcomes back NMBR11 on May 27. NMBR11 is an international act created by artists Bernard Bulhack and Yeshiva Lex. The band was born in 2012 after Bernard and Yeshiva met while joining a blues project. Their interest in other genres drove them to branch off to create a duo and eventually full band as well. Born and raised in South America (Chile and Venezuela), coming to the U.S. over a decade and a half ago, and being exposed to many cultures resulted in the rich sound they now deliver in their music. Bernard and Yeshiva (Bernard - FIU & FAU alumni & Yeshiva - Berklee alumni) join forces to create songs that reflect the wide variety of influences they’ve picked up along the road, which range from Americana, Blues, Roots, Folk, Jazz, Latin, and Rock. Their hearts, however, are ever so taken by Americana music, which is the style they drift towards when it comes to writing. Opening for NMBR11 is Rick Hardeman. Rick may be new to the ACMA, but he is certainly not new to the folk world. He's performed at many festivals around the state . The ACMA Songwriters Circle is open to the public and held every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. The Americana Community Music Association provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/Folk community. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10-$15 donation. The ACMA is a non-sectarian not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all shows start at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.americanacma.org

prise that wander-lust found its way into Brian’s soul, as well as into his music. His first guitar at age 9 became his best friend, and all that traveling opened up a whole world to explore and create in. Along the way many influences were caught in his musical-dragnet. Brian has a special knack for putting together a musical set. Combining tasty covers from artists like Jerry Reed, John Prine, Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, John Hartford, Chet Atkins, Peter Rowan and Richard Thompson with crowd pleasing original pieces, he plays with mad skill and pure energy. The songs Brian has written borrow from folksy flat pick guitar and new-grass as well as a touch of new-age acoustic music. He sings with a soulful, earthy voice, and his live performances tend to be just that: Lively! For the past twenty years Brian has made music his sole occupation, and has six CDs under his belt: his latest "Key" is an acoustic novel set in the Florida Keys telling the fictional story of Painter Kellet & Compass Rose. This CD is similar but very different from his acoustic novel from 2013 "Chickens Pigs" which is an acoustic play based in Civil War era Florida and was recently named Best Florida Folk CD of 2013 by the Florida Times-Union. A great many of the songs are set in and inspired by Florida, a state of mind and a state of nature that he loves to write about and longs to see preserved. Opening for Brian Smalley are ACMA members Peg and Emery Williams as HomeGrown Sounds. The easy listening sounds of the husband and wife team of Emery and Peggy Williams can best be described as “contemporary coffee house/wine bar,” a little folky and a little smokey. Peggy's gentle guitar NMBR11 features Yeshiva Lex and Bernard Bulhack

Gulfshore Opera, Gulf Coast Symphony to perform Madama Butterfly May 6 A beautiful new fully staged production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly will be performed at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Saturday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Co-produced by the Gulf Coast Symphony and Gulfshore Opera, Madama Butterfly tells the heartbreaking story of an innocent young geisha who gives up everything to be with an American Naval Officer. Filled with Puccini’s most expansive melodies, Madama Butterfly stars an international cast of opera singers: soprano Seon Duk Kim as Cio-Cio San, tenor Cody Austin as Lt. Pinkerton, baritone Gustavo Feulein as Sharpless, mezzosoprano Francesca Aguado as Suzuki, and tenor Victor Khodadad as Goro. The cast also includes Sarah Nordin, Tyler Putnam, Brenda Louise Hudson, and Holly Flack, and a chorus of local talented singers. The production is directed by Vincent Connor and conducted by Andrew M. Kurtz. Soprano Seon Duk Kim is a promising new talent on the rise. She has established herself as one of the most gifted sopranos in France. Her unique voice, combined with her elegant and charismatic stage presence, has prompted praise for Ms. Kim in all her recent appearances. Ms. Kim’s most notable roles include Mimi in La Boheme, Liu in Turandot, Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, the title roles in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, Dvorzak’s Rusalka, and Massenet’s Manon, among others. Equally at home on the concert stage, Ms. Kim has sung the sopranos solos in Vivaldi’s Gloria and Magnificat, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. She has previously appeared with AJO

Ms. Kim was the first place winner in the Leopold Bellan International Music of Dramatic Arts Competition in 2010. Cody Austin is quickly becoming one of the most promising singing actors of his age. A 2009 graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, his professional debut was with the Opera Company of Philadelphia as Rodrigo in Otello. Recent engagements include the Duke in Verdi’s Rigoletto for Opera Santa Barbara, Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata and Romeo in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette for Virginia Opera, Alfredo for Utah Opera, Lensky in Eugene Onegin for Des Moines Metro Opera, Don Jose in Le Tragedy de Carmen for Shreveport Opera, and Belmonte in Abduction from the Seraglio with Opera Grand Rapids. Engagements this season include Alfredo in La Traviata with Pittsburgh Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Pa Skaret Opera in Sweden, and Traviata with New Jersey Festival Orchestra. Watermelon Festival June 2 - 4 at Fleamasters

Fleamasters’ Watermelon Festival celebrates the local watermelon crop with water-melon-themed activities, music, shopping, and plenty of old-fashioned, family-friendly entertainment. The summer harvest season celebration kicks off June 2, 3 and 4 with the 7th Annual Watermelon Festival at Fleamasters Fleamarket located at 4135 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Fort Myers. Enjoy free slices of sweet, local grown melon and purchase a melon or two to take home. The three-day event features live entertainment plus traditional watermelon competitions: Seed spitting and speed eating. For seed spitting and speed eating, medals, prizes and bragging rights will be awarded for each of three age groups: 10 and under, 11 to 16, 17 and over. “Last year, Fort Myers resident Brent Ray came within 4 feet, 2 Sheena inches of breaking the world seed spitting record,” said Linda Steele, Fleamasters marketing director. Brent propelled a tiny watermelon seed an amazing 71 feet at the 2016 Watermelon Festival. Top distance in the 11 to 16-year-old age group was set in 2015 at 28 feet, 3 inches. Twenty-five feet is the record to beat in the 10 and under age group. The world record for watermelon seed spitting was set in 1995 when Jason Schayot, a junior at Southwestern University, spit a watermelon seed 75 feet, 2 inches at the De Leon, Texas Peach and Melon Festival. He beat the previous P&M Festival record of 49 feet 1/4 inch and eclipsed the world record of 68 feet, 91/8 inches set by Lee Wheelis at the Luling, Texas Watermelon Thump in 1989. “If anyone at Fleamasters’ 2017 Watermelon Festival breaks Jason

Schayot’s world seed-spitting record, they’ll win $500 cash from Fleamasters Fleamarket,” Steele said. “We’re also bringing back ‘Minute to Win It,’ open to all ages, and our cow-milking con-test, for kids age 12-and-under,” Steele said. “‘Minute to Win It’ is a skill competition with watermelon seeds and chopsticks. Cow milking is not with a real cow. That would be messy. Our cow is wooden, but the mechanics are the same.” The Whispering Pines Clydesdales will be back, along with pony rides, a kid’s craft area, face painting, and the extraordinarily tall stilt walker Way Too Tall Torrie. A wide variety of entertainers are scheduled to perform, including The Dixielanders and Blue Dirt Dixie Strollers, The Entertainers, Mary Lou and Double Stop, guitarist Paul Cottrell, and violinist Laura Leary. Southwest Florida musical artist Sheena Brook, Brook who recently appeared on NBC’s Season 12 of the Voice, will perform Sunday afternoon at the Watermelon Festival. Shop for crafts and decorative items, including jewelry, quilts, artwork, home decor, clothing, and innumerable other items. Fleamasters Fleamarket is open Friday 9 am to 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm, rain or shine. The market showcases hundreds of unique, owner-operated stores. If you have something to sell (especially if you’re an artist or crafter) Fleamasters’ Watermelon Festival is a great place to display your wares. Space starts at only $5 per day. Estimated weekend attendance is 15,000+ (historically based). Find info about Fleamasters Fleamarket and the Watermelon Festival at fleamall.com, or connect on Facebook for festival updates or call 239-334-7001.

Bacon Brothers to play B.B. Mann Hall June 3

Headspace Promotions announced The Bacon Brothers, Kevin and Michael, will perform at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Saturday, June 3 at 8 p.m. The Bacon Brothers are anything but a typical rock band. Brothers Michael and Kevin Bacon, each accomplished in their own right, play gritty rock that is unapologetically unique and authentic. Their style can best be described by their first album title, Forosoco, a word describing the blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences. Now, over 20 years later, The Bacon Brothers continue to impress audiences and critics with their soulful sound and their latest offering of Americana 36 Cents. Older brother Michael, an acclaimed musician and composer, and younger brother Kevin, an award-winning actor, combine to form The Bacon Brothers. Their childhood hometown of Philadelphia is the brothers’ muse for their eclectic blend of rock and soul. Growing up in the City of Brotherly Love, Michael and Kevin were surrounded by music from an early age. Michael started as a career musician in the 1960s, first playing gigs at Philadelphia’s Electric Factory with younger brother Kevin tagging along. He later moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting, and his musical career took off. Now, an Emmy Award-winning composer, Michael is credited with many original scores for film and television, most recently scoring the documentary “Long Exposure-The Unlikely Journey of Pfc. Tony Vaccaro" which was shown on HBO. On March 18, 2016, the world premiere for Michael’s four-movement “Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra" took place at The Schimmel Center in downtown Manhattan. Younger brother Kevin always loved music but chose a different path. Best known for his acting roles in The Following, Footloose, Mystic River and Apollo 13, Kevin has appeared in 80

Art Quilters Unlimited display at Alliance for the Arts in May

The Alliance for the Arts May exhibition Pushing Boundaries: Art Quilters Unlimited opens May 5 from 5 - 7 p.m. at 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, The exhibit continues until May 26. Meet exhibiting artists during a conversational walk and talk as they discuss their works on May 6 at 10 a.m. During this exhibition, Nancy Goodenow impressionistic and abstract works will be on display in the Member Gallery and landscape painter Richard Stanton will be on display in the Theatre Gallery. “Fiber art is a unique way to exchange ideas,” says exhibitions coordinator Krista Johnson. “Throughout time, different cultures everywhere have been, and still are, weaving and sewing.” Art Quilters Unlimited is an active creative group of contemporary fiber artists in southwest Florida. The group creates fine art wall hangings based on their experiences, imagery and ideas rather than tradi-

tional patterns. Techniques include machine and hand threadwork, shibori and discharged fabric treatments, painted surfaces, 3-D assemblages, wall sculptures and mixed media. For more information, call 239-9392787 or visit www.ArtInLee.org.

DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts has become a staple of the art scene in Fort Myers. The gallery focuses on original, contemporary art created by members and guests artists. In conjunction with the SoCo Second Saturday art crawl, a new exhibition opens to the public every second Saturday of the month. On Saturday, May 13, Venerari by Dharma Lefevre will be unveiled for art patrons and enthusiasts to enjoy. For local eclectic artist, Dharma Lefevre, mythology and folklore have always been a source of inspiration. She uses her art as an exploration of ancient lore and how it personally connects with modern man through circular lessons. In December of 2015, she debuted her mythological series at Casa Shanti in Fort Myers and soon discovered that these stories that touched and inspired her, were actually a common thread for other people. These series are part of a journey into the forgotten. They are about stories, breathing life into the pieces and reacquainting the viewer with our roots. “Each day we recreate our path, write our own stories and mythologies while we attempt to connect with others that are on the same roads,” she says. "American mythologist Joseph Campbell once said that myth must be kept alive and the people who can keep it alive are artists in some kind or another,” says Lefevre.

As described by the artist, Venerari is the act of venerating and reflecting on the people that have entered into our lives. Each piece on the exhibition is a part of the story in the web of life. The stories that get passed down thru tribes and may have been forgotten are brought to new light with the visages of modern heroes that walk in and out of our lives. Dharma Lefevre will conduct an artist talk May 13 to explain how each life lesson has paved another brick into the path of her fate and artistic career. The artist will be sharing stories and how each piece has granted more compassion and understanding of the common thread that weaves all of us together. The exhibition will be on display through June 3. More information about the exhibition and DAAS Co-Op is available at www.daascoop.com. The gallery is located in the Royal Palm Square at 1400 Colonial Blvd. suite 84, in Fort Myers. For telephone inquiries, call 239-590-8645.

The exhibition will be made up of artwork depicting invasive exotic plant and animal species created by Lee County students.
