NAPLES PLAYERS

Ripcord Bonnie Knapp, Dylan Shure and Janina Birtolo in the Naples Players production of Ripcord, playing April 25 - May 20.

The Naples Players 2017-18 season ends on a high-note with David Lindsay-Abaire’s award winning comedy Ripcord, which opens with a red-carpet reception on April 25 and runs through May 20. A seemingly harmless bet between two old women quickly escalates into a hilarious game of one-upmanship with the prize being the sunny upper floor room of the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility. Janina Birtolo plays the incessantly chipper but sly Marilyn Dunne to the foil of Bonnie Knapp in the role of the cantankerous but likeable Abby Binder. When the two are required to share a room in the retirement home, their dramatically different personalities immediately rub each other the wrong way. When Marilyn arrives as Abby’s possible new roommate, Abby pleads with an orderly, “If I have to have someone in here, why can’t it be someone quiet? What about that woman without the voicebox? She seems nice.” Knowing this odd couple roommate situation will not work, the two make a bet. Marilyn insists that nothing makes her angry, while Abby says that she is never, ever scared. If Abby can make Marilyn lose her temper, Marilyn will move out. That is, unless Marilyn frightens Abby first. In that case, Abby gets to have Marilyn’s bed, which is right next to the window and has a lovely view of a park. For fans of the 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls, it’s easy to imagine the set up of Ripcord. Picture Rose and Dorothy making a 6 - May 2018

bet to push each other to break from their respectively brave and cheerful personalities. Now picture throwing the boundaries of 1980s television out the window and you have Ripcord, an expertly engineered situation comedy. The plot quickly escalates from funny to hilarious as Marilyn and Abby’s attempts at one-upmanship accelerate to increasingly disastrous outcomes in ways that are funny and unexpectedly relatable and heartwarming. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire had made a name for himself with more dramatic works including Good People and his Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole. Before those more serious plays, Lindsay-Abaire was known for writing comedies including the hit Fuddy Meers about a day in the life of an amnesiac abducted by a mysterious stranger. "Lindsay-Abaire is a master of the set-up and punch line,” said Bryce Alexander, executive artistic director of The Naples Players. “You might be able to imagine where the plot is heading, but when the worst case scenarios actually occur, you still find yourself laughing in disbelief." Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information visit www.naplesplayers.org or call (239) 263-7990. Subscriptions for TNP’s exciting 65th anniversary season which include Chicago The Musical, White Christmas and Guys & Dolls are now on sale. Happenings Magazine

The Odd Couple, The Cemetery Club on Cape Coral stage By Michael Moran

Neil Simon's best-known comedy, The Odd Couple, will play on stage April 26 through May 6. Don’t miss your last chance to see this classic comedy. Come and enjoy the two mismatched buddies, Oscar and Felix, at their best. This production of The Odd Couple reflects more than just a barrage of one-liners or a superficial, slap-happy exercise in joke recital. Neil Simon's writing wraps all of the eight characters in a layer of humanity, enhancing the comedy by making it feel real. There is a reason that The Odd Couple is a classic -- not only is there scarcely a moment in the play that isn't hilarious, but in the usual Simon style, there are also fresh and unexpected insights into human nature. The Cemetery Club opens May 11 and runs through May 20. This dramatic comedy which, on the surface, is about three Jewish widows who meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husband’s graves. Written by Ivan Menchell in 1990, the three main characters, friends for years, are deciding on another glass of wine, but their choices parallel a much larger theme: How we face the reality of growing old. And, having lost their husbands, their need for one another creates an even tighter bond which invokes the comedy and pathos of this endearing play. Gene Ferrari returns to the Cultural Park stage to kick off our summer season on May 25, 26 and 27 for three performances only. Gene not just another singer; and he has been classified as one of the best interpreters of any song he chooses. Gene sweeps onto the stage with a wave of energy. He flashes his contagious smile to his eager audience and fills the stage with a rolling tenor that stirs the imagination. For our patrons with children and grandchildren don’t forget our summer camps begin Monday June 4. This year we offer three different three week camps for only $285. per session, there is no better place for the young folks to develop their talents and imagination than CPTC Summer Camp programs. Don’t forget to check our website and box office for our other summer stage shows including The Bad Seed, The Queen of Bingo, Faithfully Yours Journey tribute band, David Morin returns for a tribute to the memory of Elvis and come join us for our “Piano Men” tribute to the music of Billy Joel and Elton John. All of which will be on stage this summer. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. Cape Coral. FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE

George Washington’s Teeth Liz Abbott, Carrie Lund and Viki Boyle in George Washington's Teeth at Florida Rep. Photo by Joe Dafeldecker

Florida Repertory Theatre wraps up its 20th anniversary season with the world premiere production of Mark St. Germain's, George Washington's Teeth, which was chosen from the company's 4th Annual PlayLab Festival held last year. The farce for five women will play in Florida Rep's Historic Arcade Theatre April 26 to May 13. George Washington's Teeth is a hilarious comedy that follows the exploits of the women of the beleaguered New Bunion Historical Society as they battle the male-dominated city council to keep the doors open. With time running out to renew their lease, the ladies must find creative ways to snare new members and lure visitors to their sleepy, New England town. When a set of George Washington's dentures turns up in the hands of an unexpected rival, the ladies of the Society brace themselves for all-out war. Heartfelt and historic, this new farce proves that our differences don't divide us, they make us strong. Florida Rep audiences will recognize St. Germain from previous hits, Camping with Henry and Tom which opened the then newlyrenovated ArtStage Studio Theatre in 2012, and Best of Enemies last fall. An accomplished playwright and screenwriter, his work also includes the Off Broadway sensation Freud's Last Session as well as last year's Relativity in Hartford, Conn. starring Richard Dreyfuss as Albert Einstein. Other works include Dancing Lessons, Becoming Dr. Ruth, and a number of musicals, television credits, 8 - May 2018

and screenplays. "My first visit to [Florida Rep] was very impressive," St. Germain said of his experience in the 2017 PlayLab. "The audience is smart and excited. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the company was very talented. What's not to like?" George Washington's Teeth features a cast of five women something rare in the canon of American plays, and that was by design. "Once you grow past the ingenue stage, it is progressively more difficult to get a good role as an actress," St. Germain said. "It's only because the opportunities aren't always there - how many plays can you think of with an all-male cast, then count how many plays are made up of all women? I wanted to do a play where women from all ages powered the play." Florida Rep ensemble members Viki Boyle (The Miracle Worker) and Carrie Lund (How the Other Half Loves) return to the Florida Rep stage for the farce, and are joined by familiar guest artist Liz Abbott (Veronica’s Room), as well as award-winning TV and theatre veteran Patricia R. Floyd (Florida Rep debut), and Carbonell Award nominee Jackie Rivera (Florida Rep debut). New York-based award-winning filmmaker and international theatre veteran Abigail Zealey Bess directs the production. Priced at $55 and $45 for regular performances, $35 and $25 for previews. Single tickets are on sale now through the box office at 239-332-4488 and online at www.floridarep.org. Happenings Magazine

Theatre Conspiracy at the Alliance for the Arts presents A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and directed by Sonya McCarter May 3 - 13 at 10091 McGregor Blvd. Fort Myers. Considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, A Raisin in the Sun follows the story of the Younger family as they discover the dangers of dreaming big and the heartbreak of reality. A Raisin in the Sun, a drama in three acts, was first published and produced in 1959. The play’s title is taken from “Harlem,” a poem by Langston Hughes, which examines the question “What happens to a dream

deferred?/Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?” This penetrating study of a working-class black family on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s reflected Hansberry’s own experiences of racial harassment after her prosperous family moved into a white neighborhood. Individual tickets to each show are $25, $11 for students or $22 for Alliance members. Performances run May 3 - 5 and May 10 - 12 at 8 p.m. and May 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. Talkbacks occur on May 6 and May 23 after the productions. Laboratory Theater of Florida

10th anniversary season

The Laboratory Theater of Florida has announced its 10th anniversary season. The coming season features a Florida premiere, four Southwest Florida premieres and one brand new show. Additionally, starting in September, half-price preview nights will be available for every regular season performance. The summer season includes three shows and kicks off on June 1.

Hush Up, Sweet Charlotte by Matthew Martin and Steve Murray If you loved last season’s Whatever Happened to Baby Jane; A Parody of the Horror, you’ll love this campy parody of the movie, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte! Journey to a plantation in the Old South and meet Charlotte Hollis, a southern belle whose only companion is her maid. She has been shunned by her community since the long-ago mysterious murder of her lover. Now the family home is about to be torn down, so she calls upon her cousin, Miriam, to help. It’s sure to be a drag-tastic time with these divas! Hush Up. Sweet Charlotte plays from June 1 to July 1 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida.

Evil Dead, The Musical by George Reinblatt What do you get when you combine cult classic zombie movies with stereotypical teen movies and put it all to music? You get this crazy, cheesy, hilarious, fun-filled show that appeals to horror and non-horror fans alike! Get ready for blood, chainsaws, limbs, and demons...along with laughter and singing! Evil Dead, the Musical plays July 19 – 22. Itʼs Only A Play by Terrence McNally Set in the town home of a Broadway producer, we meet the team behind The Golden Egg as the opening night reviews are awaited. There’s the producer herself, the terrified playwright, his best friend, the has-been female lead, the British director, and a theater critic (wait, why is he there?) Filled with one-liners about the entertainment world that will make you laugh and cringe, this show will remind you that there truly is “no business-like show business!” It’s Only A Play will be performed Aug. 3 – 26. Laboratory Theater’s regular season begins in September:. Anna In The Tropics by Nilo Cruz Picture it: Ybor City, Tampa in 1929. It’s hot and humid inside a small cigar factory. Workers are hand-rolling tobacco leaves, while a “lector” reads to entertain them - any12 - May 2018

thing from newspapers to poetry to novels. But when the new hire reads from the novel Anna Karenina, it sets in motion the major events of the story. Themes in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play – love, lust, infidelity, violence, debt – turn the lives of these CubanAmerican families into the very story to which they’ve been listening. Anna in the Tropics plays Sept. 14 – 30.

Hand to God by Robert Askins Admit it – you’ve had certain…impulses, right? Ones you’ve thought about, but would never actually say out loud or act upon? It’s human nature. And that darkest human nature is exposed when a Texas church youth-group assignment to create original hand puppets goes strangely awry. Best New Play winner 2014, Off-Broadway Alliance. Hand to God will be performed Oct. 19 – Nov. 4. 24-Hour Playwriting Project Playwrights will bring their sleeping bags and coffee mugs to Lab Theater, where they will be assigned a theme, a director, and actors. Within just twenty-four hours, you will see the fruits of their labor when we stage all of their 20-minute one-act plays! Judged by a panel of area theater and arts professionals. A hugely popular event, this will be presented Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Every Christmas Story Ever Told by James Fitzgerald, John K. Alvarez, Michael Carelton & Will Knapp It’s the holidays! Time for the classics – Rudolph, Frosty, Ebeneezer, Scrooge, the Nutcracker – and many more! But Maybe not the way we’re accustomed to hearing them. In what can best be called a holiday mash-up, actors take beloved stories and traditions from around the world and turn them upside-down and sideways! Every Christmas Story Ever Told plays Nov. 30 – Dec. 22.

A Guy, A Girl, A Piano (Cabaret Act) Theresa Quinn and Randy Kramer will join us with their 4-hands-1-piano cabaret. Enjoy an evening of virtuosic 4-hand piano arrangements, vocal solos, and duets, featuring the music of Gershwin, Sondheim, the Beatles, Beethoven, Joplin, Bernstein, Fats Waller and others. This show will be perfomed Jan. 4 – 6. Hedwig and the Angry Inch by Stephen Trask & John Cameron Mitchell Meet Hedwig, one of the most unique characters to hit the stage in this wickedly

funny, innovative, and heartbreaking rock musical sensation. Winner of four 2014 Tony Awards. Entertainment Weekly calls the show “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time.” Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be performed Jan. 18 – Feb. 3. And the Winner Is… by Mitch Albom Tyler Johnes just wants to make it to the Oscars to accept his award for Best Supporting Actor. There’s just one problem – he seems to be stuck in a bar where things are not quite…normal. Seamus the bartender isn’t helping matters, either. While Tyler continues to try and make it ono the red carpet, he is interrupted by unusual visitors. Filled with humor and emotion, this play will win your heart. This production will run Feb. 22 through March 16.

Andorra by Max Frisch One of the most oft-produced plays in Europe, this parable about racism and prejudice is a great example of epic- theater. Set in fictionalized Andorra, Andri is adopted by a teacher and raised as a Jew. Throughout the play, Andri is faced with outright prejudice and complicit silence from his fellow townspeople. Frisch’s message is loud and clear – prejudice happens in every country, both in the past and the present, and we must learn to accept everyone’s differences if we are to lead happy, productive lives. Andorra will be performed March 29 through April 14.

The Immigration Project Play The culmination of ten months of interviews and submitted stories, The Immigration Project Play will tell real-life stories, jokes, anecdotes, songs, prayers, regrets, and hopes of both legal and illegal immigrants living in southwest Florida. Like its predecessor, The Rauschenberg Project Play, the stories collected by journalists and anonymously submitted by immigrants will be woven into a play by a team of playwrights and presented in order to share a narrative that isn’t heard in the media today. Performance dates will be announced later. The Laboratory Theater of Florida will also offer a series of staged readings throughout the year. The reading on May 6 is our last reading before we go into production. It is a great opportunity to experience the process.” June & Jason’s Survival Guide to Divorce is reminiscent of great sitcom

BROADWAY PALM

My Fair Lady

Broadway Palm presents the award-winning musical My Fair Lady playing now through May 19. One of the most beloved musicals of all time, My Fair Lady recently made its triumphant return to Broadway, but those in Southwest Florida don’t have to travel all the way to New York City to hear the magnificent score and see the delightful story unfold live on stage. This Lerner and Loewe classic is based on George Bernard Shaw’s witty comedy Pygmalion. My Fair Lady tells the unlikely love story between a professor, Henry Higgins, and a cockney flower seller, Eliza Doolittle. Professor Higgins wagers a bet that he can transform Eliza into a high society lady. As Eliza becomes

more refined, and less reliant upon him, Professor Higgins realizes that he can't live without her. The unforgettable score includes “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” “I’m Getting Married in the Morning,” “On the Street Where You Live” and “Wouldn’t it be Loverly.” My Fair Lady is playing at Broadway Palm now through May 19. Performances are Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. Ticket prices range from $45 to $70 with discounts for children and parties of 20 or more. DAAS Co-Op Gallery: Kellen Beck Mills

DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will showcase the art of guest artist Kellen Beck Mills in May. The collection (“Donna Quixote: An Adventure into the Feminine” ) is inspired by the concept of art as a visual poetry and found imagery. “Each composition for me is a small world where, as the artist Alice Neel said, ‘I can do as I want.’ My character, Donna Quixote, stars in this series of collages as a feminine archetype, sometimes tilting at windmills while she goes about the adventure of exploring the soul and experience of being human,” says Mills, who uses a mixed media collage technique to produce her pieces. “Her figure in a stance as a super hero remain constant while her costume, props and environment change in each staged presentation of figure and ground relationships,” adds the artist. Mills’ works are unique and very recognizable due to her unique style. “When I was little I delighted in making my own paper dolls, so now that I'm a

grown up I suppose I've returned to that delight with more experience and an expanded visual vocabulary. In the process I hope that the personal somehow touches the universal and that others might get the symbolism and private injokes that emerge in the narratives.” – adds the artist, who enjoys combining mediums to bring more interest to each piece. The opening reception coincides with the monthly SoCo Second Saturday, held at the SoCo Cultural District (Alliance for the Arts and Royal Palm Square block) on Saturday, May 12 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. For more information about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239-5908645. Nature photography and collage work are two major influences for her Tina Marie Fleury work. Her imagery ranges from a surreal collage style, to more traditional landscapes and animal portraits with a twist. Tina Marie Fleury is a licensed mural artist, instructor and independent faux finisher. AMERICANA COMMUNITY MUSIC ASSOCIATION

Bill Bynum, Cottondale Swamp, Tim McGeary & benefit showcase

May will be another eventful month for the Americana Community Music Association in Fort Myers. It’s starts with Bill Bynum and Friends playing May 5. After their concert last year at the ACMA, many people asked "Can we have them back tomorrow?" Well that didn't happen but they are coming back. With songs both traditional and original, and a sound that's at once as comfortable as old jeans and as fresh as a new blade of grass, Bill Bynum & Co. is a band that’s easy to love and hard to quit. The band’s core of rhythm guitar, fiddle, Dobro, bass and harmony vocals can lean into country, veer toward bluegrass, or take listeners on a unique journey through Bill’s original songs. Down river, Wayne County resident Bill Bynum writes country and rock-flavored songs with a hint of the bluegrass music he grew up with. He comes with a strong recommendation from one of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in bluegrass, songwriter Pete Goble, who says that Bynum could get a recording contract with his voice alone, and he's a recent Metro Detroit Songwriting Contest winner and Ark Open Stage Showcase performer. "My music is kind of a Southern roots-based acoustic music, but I feel like I am very hard to box into a category," Bynum told the Ann Arbor News. "There's more emotional content to my music than probably most people's." ACMA member Joyce Knape will open the May 5 show. Local singer songwriter Tim McGeary will perform May 12. If music is a springboard for emotion, then Tim McGeary knows all too well how to mine it to the max. “I have to write songs,” the accomplished songwriter insists. “Yet, it’s both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that you are able to write and sing songs that can connect to people and bring them to an emotional state. The curse is that I can never turn it off. If I get something in my head at 3 am, I have to get up and get to my guitar or piano so I quickly record something. Otherwise, I won’t be able to get back to sleep.” McGeary’s dedication to his muse has never faltered, and now, even after a couple of decades of plying his craft, that pas34 - May 2018

Cottondale Swamp is a Florida swamp rock, southern Americana, outlaw country band from the swamps of Florida. Weeki Wachee is their ground zero. Mermaid Shows and the Gulf of Mexico, it doesn't get any more "Old Florida" than that. Original Florida swamp rock with authentic country sensibilities and a heart of rock 'n roll. Cottondale Swamp celebrates the back roads, small towns and the seedy underbelly of Florida. We write songs that celebrate the people, places and uniqueness of our southern most state. Cottondale Swamp is fronted by Kenny Grube who has been an Elvis tribute artist for the last 10 years. Kenny is the real deal! His voice has an authentic southern drawl that expresses the years he has endured paying his dues on the B, C, and D circuits of the southern United States. He is backed by an equally experienced band of road warriors. All of whom have been plying their trade in the trenches and (at times) the pinnacles that come your way when you're a musician relentless in pursuing the dream. Never considered a prodigy, his classmates considered him most likely never to succeed... he has at least fulfilled that one promise. But Robert never quits and there's still hope. The ACMA hosts a singer songwriters circle every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a nonjudgmental, casual atmosphere. No membership required. All are welcome to come and play or just to listen. The Americana Community Music Association provides a venue for local and touring artists, many are award winning performers in the Americana/Folk community. Gulfshore Opera announces fifth season

Gulfshore Opera plans two full operas and a variety of vocal music concerts for the 2018-19 season. The opera company celebrates its fifth year of serving the three coastal counties of Southwest Florida. Now recognized as the touring opera festival of Southwest Florida, the cities of Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Sanibel Island, Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs, Naples and Marco Island all look forward to what’s coming next season. The company will announce the casting of their professional artists later in the summer, but you can mark some important dates now. Keeping with their mission to offer a wide variety of affordable vocal concerts to diverse audiences, Gulfshore Opera will launch their high season tour with GO Cabaret, a fun and casual evening of nostalgic hits from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s with jazz trio accompaniment. Enjoy the great tunes of Cole Porter, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams and others. Each location provides an inviting atmosphere and plenty of libations between sets. Other community concerts include a Valentine’s Day offering, Songs of Love

at Artis-Naples on Feb. 13. This concert, featuring Gulfshore Opera professional artists in residence, will span from grand opera and art song to Broadway and popular melody. Songs of Inspiration makes the rounds at the beginning of Lent. You will recognize many moving melodies like “The Impossible Dream,” “Theme from Exodus” and traditional sacred songs, plus touching scenes of prayer from the great operas. The company plans two full opera productions in season 5. First comes Don Pasquale, playing in all three counties from Jan. 31 - Feb. 10. It is a light and simple opera buffo (comic opera) about an old curmudgeon who prefers to disinherit his nephew rather than see him marry a woman he finds "unsuitable." Instead, he decided to take a wife and produce his own heirs. The other full scale production will be Verdi’s tragic love story, La Traviata, which will play at the Charlotte Cultural Center on March 31 and at the Parish Life Center of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Springs on April 2 and 4. The story of a tragic love

between the Parisian courtesan, Violetta, and her young and naïve suitor, Alfredo Germont, is played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society. It provides plenty of opportunity for passionate and very famous melodies. As a non-profit with a very active social initiative for at risk students, Gulfshore Playhouse places great importance on their annual fundraising opera gala and has earned a reputation for hosting one of the best fundraisers in the area. The Fifth Anniversary Opera Gala will be held on March 2 beginning with an Opera Meets Broadway concert, featuring one of Broadway’s top stars at Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples. The concert is followed by a gala dinner in the ballroom of the Naples Hilton. Last year’s Phantom Gala sold out a week in advance, so you will want to reserve your seats well ahead of time. The box office opens to the general public on July 16. Maestro Club members may purchase starting July 5. For more information, visit www.gulfshoreopera.org or call (239) 529-3925.

SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES

Whiskey Myers, Billy Currington at The Ranch

The Sam Galloway Concert Series in conjunction with Gator Country 101.9 has more national artists coming to The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers this spring. Whiskey Myers kicks off this month’s country concerts with a show on May 12. It would be an understatement to say that a lot has happened since Whiskey Myers was last in the recording studio. Over two whirlwind years, the gritty Texas band hit #1 on the iTunes Country Chart with their breakout third album Early Morning Shakes, earned raves everywhere from Rolling Stone to USA Today, and toured the U.S. and U.K. relentlessly, slaying massive festival crowds and sharing stages with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., Jamey Johnson, and more along the way. You’d be forgiven, then, for expecting things to work a little differently this time around when the band reunited with acclaimed producer Dave Cobb for their stellar new album, Mud. But as it turns out, success doesn’t change a Southern gentleman, and they don’t come any more Southern than Whiskey Myers. The Ranch welcomes Billy Currington on May 25. This show has sold out. Billy Currington’s latest album bears the breezy title Summer Forever, but the talented Georgia native has spent more than a decade in the spotlight proving he’s truly a man for all seasons. Possessing one of the smoothest and most distinct voices in any genre of music, Currington is equally skilled at delivering upbeat summertime anthems as well as exploring the complexities of life and love with a poignant ballad. On Summer Forever, Currington’s sixth studio album, he brings both with a collection of songs that will take the listener on a riveting musical journey and leave them breathless at the end of the ride. Since his self-titled debut album bowed on Mercury Records in 2003, Currington has scored eleven career No. 1 singles, most recently, “Don’t Hurt Like It Used To.” His other hits that reached the No. 1 spot include such memorable songs as “Good Directions,” “Let Me Down Easy,” “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right,” “People Are Crazy,” “That’s How Country Boys Roll,” “Hey Girl,” and “We Are Tonight.” Over the years, the self-effacing Georgia boy has amassed an impressive list of accolades. He won the “Hottest Video of the Year” honor at the fan-voted CMT Music Awards for “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” in 2006. The same year, he received an ACM nod for Top New Male Vocalist.

Whiskey Myers

Billy Currington His hit duet with Shania Twain, “Party for Two,” earned nominations from both the CMA and ACM. “People Are Crazy” took Currington’s already hot career to another level. He earned Grammy nominations for Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song in addition to being nominate for Single and Song of the Year from the Country Music Association. Other upcoming shows at The Ranch include Big Smo on May 18, Zoso - The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience on May 19, Joe Nichols on June 23 and Jon Langston on June 30. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community, says Brian Tidwell, general sales manager of Sam Galloway Ford. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community, Tidwell said. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. May 2018 - 43

Harry Connick Jr. at Mann Hall June 1 & 2

Harry Connick Jr. will launch A New Orleans Tricentennial Celebration Tour on June 1 and June 2 at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. Harry Connick, Jr.’s career has exemplified excellence across multiple platforms in the entertainment world. He has received Grammy and Emmy awards as well as Tony nominations for his live and recorded musical performances, his achievements in film and television and his appearances on Broadway as both an actor and a composer. The foundation of Connick’s art is the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at the age of five. Over the past three decades, he has established himself as a musician, singer and composer par excellence, a legendary live performer and a best-selling artist with millions of CDs sold around the world. Connick has also made his mark as an actor in films (appearing in over 19 films such as “Dolphin Tale,” “Hope Floats,” “PS I Love You,” “Copycat”), on television (“American Idol,” Will & Grace,” “South Pacific”) and on Broadway (“Pajama Game,” “Thou Shalt Not”). In the fall of 2016 Connick launched “Harry,” a nationally syndicated daytime television show hosted by Connick and featuring his touring band. “Harry” is a daily hour of family friendly television that seeks to entertain, uplift and inspire. The show also reflects the unparalleled entertainment skills of Harry Connick, Jr.’s varied 44 - May 2018

career and the television industry recognized the debut season of “Harry” with five Emmy nominations, including a nomination for Best Host, and a Critics Choice nomination for Best Talk Show. Despite his busy career, Connick has always found the time to be charitable and has done some of his most important work in his efforts to help New Orleans rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He, along with friend Branford Marsalis, conceived of “Musicians’ Village,” a community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Musicians’ Village provides homes for Katrina-displaced musicians and its focal point, the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, is an after-school teaching facility for children, a performance hall and recording studio for musicians, and a gathering place for the community. Connick’s honors, including the induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, Honorary Doctorates from Tulane and Loyola Universities and the Jefferson Award for Public Service, have not led Harry Connick, Jr. to slow his creative pace; they only confirm his determination to apply his talents in ways that prove inspirational to other artists and publicly spirited citizens. Ticket prices are $49.50, $69.50, $115 and $149.50. The June 1 and June 2 shows are both 8 p.m. performances. Tickets are on sale at the box office, online at www.bbmannpah.com or call 239481-4849. The Fort Myers dates are presented by AEG Presents and PFM.

Little Big Town at Germain Arena May 5

Little Big Town will wrap up their Breakers Tour at Germain Arena in Estero on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. The local concert will also feature Kacey Musgraves and Midland.

Little Big Town Happenings Magazine

Hot on the heels of their wildly successful album Tornado, Little Big Town’s prescription for continued success and creative drive is in their sixth album, Pain Killer. The two years since Tornado’s release have proven to be the most formative and motivational for the inspired family of artists, together since 1998. In the short time since Tornado, Little Big Town earned two number one radio hits with Tornado and Pontoon, a Grammy, two ACM and three CMA awards and an Emmy. They also found time to headline a sold-out tour, join Keith Urban across North America and host the CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock twice. These hard-earned accolades and new opportunities provided a steady dose of inspiration at every turn, leading them to a fresh and very intentional approach to their latest studio album. They co-wrote most of Tornado’s songs as a group and knocked out production in a matter of weeks, whereas the road to Pain Killer was significantly longer in the making, and much more calculated. Doors for this concert will open at 6 p.m. For more concert info, visit online at www.germainarena.com

Cinco de Stumble on May 5 will benefit Fort Myers Mural Society

In an effort to help build a more beautiful downtown, the Fort Myers Mural Society, Grand Illusion Creative, Joes Records, Budweiser, 3 Pepper Burrito Company, Edison National Bank, Pushing Daizies, the River District Alliance and Lee County Visitors Bureau are sponsoring the 5th annual Art Stumble, “Cinco de Stumble!” The event on May 5 will help support the efforts of the Fort Myers Mural Society. The Florida Mural Trail is a statewide trail that connects "mural cities" with art enthusiasts offering each visitor the opportunity to enjoy outdoor public art while encouraging tourism. Cinco de Stumble will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 on First Street by the regional library. A full scale mural will be painted on the east wall of the Florentine Building. The mural depicts the famous "Pleasure Pier," an iconic historic Fort Myers landmark of the 1930s & ‘40s. GCL artist Richard Bravo has been awarded the honor of painting the mural live during Cinco de Stumble. In the shadow of the mural, vendors and local artists have been encouraged to participate, demonstrate and sell

“Welcome to Paradise” mural was painted this past December on the east side of the Gecko Holdings building located at 2431 First St. 50 - May 2018

“We have always strived to give back whenever possible to make Fort Myers a better place,” said Grand Illusion Creative founder Shari Shifrin. “When the opportunity came to head up an event that could help generate more interest and momentum for the Mural Society’s efforts we jumped at it. We are honored to be a part of this event and to be working with such incredibly talented artists from near and far.” The very first mural entitled "Welcome to Paradise" is located on the east side of Gecko Holdings building located at 2431 First St., and the Fort Myers Mural Society has been asked to facilitate the painting of two more murals in the downtown area in the next few months. “The Mural Society’s mission is to empower the next generation of leaders to embrace and utilize local talent to make art an ever evolving part of our world,” said Shifrin. “We think the best way to do that is to bring art to the community to encourage and foster community pride.” For more information, visit www.fortmyersmuralsociety.org Happenings Magazine

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.
