Art festival season is here

Charlotte Arts presents the annual Art on the Harbor Nov. 6 in Punta Gorda. The Naples Artcrafters will observe their 50th anniversary on Nov. 12 in Cambier Park. The Estero Fine Art Show takes place Nov. 18 and 19 at Miromar Design Center. The annual Sanibel Masters Art Show is Nov. 25 and 26. Of course, Fort Myers Art Walk is Nov. 4 and 5, and the new SoCo Second Saturday event is Nov. 12 at Royal Palm Square in Fort Myers.

An abundance of concerts

November is shaping up to be one of the busiest months for national concerts in Southwest Florida. At press time, there were 23 concerts on the month’s schedule. Just from Nov. 6 - 12, we have 14 different concerts taking place in our three counties we call Southwest Florida. We seem to have swung the pendulum toward a very active season. If we want to keep up this kind of great music coming to our venues, we have to buy tickets and support these shows. Artists scheduled to be in our area in November are ZZ Top, Les Stroud, Soul Asylum, Big Smo, Rick Springfield, James Otto, Gavin DeGraw & Andy Grammer, Blues Traveler, Joe Louis Walker, Frankie Ballard, King’s X, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Casting Crowns, Jana Kramer & Chase Bryant, Annie Moses Band, The LACS and Moonshine Bandits, 38 Special, T-Pain, Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots, Tyler Farr, Mannheim Steamroller, Bob Dylan and Dave Koz. December is looking to be active, too, with Sara Evans, Craig Morgan, Marshall Tucker Band, Hunter Hayes, Kellie Pickler, Martina McBride, Chris Lane, Luke Combs, The Beach Boys, Here Come the Mummies, Judy Collins, the Eli Young Band and more.

Wings tells the engaging story of a woman who suffers a stroke

A massive stroke robs Emily Stilson of her senses. Dramatic sound, lighting and video help audiences imagine her world. The next show on the Laboratory Theater stage will immerse audiences in a sensory experience. Thanks to a grant from the City of Fort Myers, Wings uses a new surround-sound system, video and lighting to communicate what it is like for Emily Stilson from just moments before she suffers her stroke, through to two years into her recovery. Opening night is Nov. 11, with a pre-show reception beginning at 7:15 p.m. at The Laboratory Theater of Florida, 1634 Woodford Ave. in the Fort Myers River District. Loved ones of stroke sufferers, in particular, will appreciate the perspective shared in Wings. It is an opportunity to understand those around us. Producing Artistic Director Annette Trossbach leads this pro-

duction. “Wings is the most challenging and rewarding show I’ve directed. This is not a living room drama; this will be an amazing experience for our audience members, who will be along for the ride in this stream-of-consciousness story.” This fast-paced monologue is the story of Emily Stilson, played expertly by New York City actor Cindy Chase, with supporting characters played by Kate Dirrigl, Patrick Erhardt, Rachel Blithe, Steven Coe and Lois McGuiness. Surround sound is designed by Mitch Haley, video by Brandon Grendell, lighting by Rosie DeLeon and set design by Matt DeNoncour. Wings by Arthur Kopit is on stage at The Laboratory Theater of Florida on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights, Nov. 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday afternoons Nov. 13, 20 and 26 at 2 p.m. Also in November, Laboratory Theatre of Florida will host Square One

Improv. The performance will be Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. Square One Improv puts you in the driver's seat for a hilarious, completely improvised performance! Every aspect of the show is based on your suggestions, including songs and musicals created on the fly! With years of experience performing and competing nationally, Square One delivers a gutbusting, one-of-a-kind show every time. Individual tickets are $12. On Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., staged readings featuring True Colors by Melanie Payne will take place. Individual tickets are $5 each, or free for season pass holders. It was the roaring ‘20s when one of the New York’s wealthiest and most eligible bachelors married a domestic worker. That fact alone would have been sufficient to keep tongues wagging for years, but what was more shocking to New York society was that Alice Jones wasn’t just a former maid. She was a former maid

whose father was a black man. What followed from that public revelation was a trial that dominated national news as Leonard Kip Rhinelander pleaded for an annulment, claiming he had unwittingly married a woman of color. True Colors tells the story of the trial and, in flashback scenes, the courtship and marriage of Alice and “Kip.” The play explores the complexities of racial identity, while documenting a long-forgotten true story of interracial love. Staged readings are a wonderful opportunity for playwrights to hear their words spoken by actors, and on a stage. They are also opportunities for a community of theater-goers and arts advocates to encourage new work, give valuable feedback and to connect with emerging talent. FGCU Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s The Tempest Nov. 11 - 20

The Theatre Program in the Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) presents William Shakespeare’s The Tempest from Nov. 11 - 20 at FGCU’s Theatre Lab. Having been forced into exile, a mother and daughter are stranded on an enchanted isle. Mother learns the island’s magical secrets and uses them to conjure a storm that will bring her enemies to shore. Many scholars believe that The Tempest is Shakespeare’s last play to write alone. Our production celebrates the master writer’s threadbare and well-worn love affair with the magical world of the stage. FGCU theatre professor, Barry Cavin, directs this classic Shakespearean piece with a modern twist in honor of

the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. This production features eleven FGCU students playing over 20 characters. Performances will be Nov. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 13, 19 and 20 at 2 p.m., with a post-performance discussion with the actors, director and crew following the Nov. 19 performance. Individual tickets to The Tempest at Florida Gulf Coast University are on sale now and cost $10 for the general public and $7 for students. Tickets and further information are available online at www.theaterlab.fgcu.edu or at the door, based on availability. The TheatreLab is located in the Arts Complex on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking is available in Lot 7 for patrons of the theatre and other guests.

NOVEMBER 2016

Broadway Palm is thrilled to present the dynamic musical Evita playing now through Nov. 19. This Tony Award-Winning production is based on the unforgettable life story of Eva Peron, an activist, suffragist and adored celebrity. Said to be one of the most popular collaborations between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Evita tells the story of Argentina's controversial First Lady. Rising from nothing, driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, Eva Peron “saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military” was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. She was a starlet at twenty-two, the president’s mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven and dead at thirty-three. The mesmerizing score features the memorable song “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” Directing Evita is Brian Enzman and choreographing is Amy Marie McCleary. Starring as Eva Peron is April Monte. Audiences may remember April from numerous Broadway Palm productions including Cabaret, All Shook Up, Miss Saigon, The Wedding Singer, CATS and most recently as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The cast also includes local children Jamie Dorris, Liam Hutt, Chase King, Maddie Negip, Hannah Roos, Annika Veldhuyzen van Zanten, Eli Veldhuyzen van Zanten and Marianna Young. John Agnew exhibit at Center for the Arts of Bonita springs

The Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs on Old 41 Road is exhibiting the art of John Agnew now through Dec. 31. Crocodilian Scratchboards, Paintings and Drawings by John Agnew explores crocodilians as studies in texture and form. Agnew likes the scratchboard technique for its affinity to the engravings in early texts about zoology, and its ability to treat the species in exquisite detail. The contrast of black and white lines is well suited for showing off intimate details of a crocodile’s scaly texture. Intimate portraits plus scenes from daily crocodilian life and even interactions with humans are all subjects explored in this exhibit. In addition to scratchboard, field sketches and paintings of crocodilians and their worldwide habitat round out this exhibit. Free family activity Saturdays will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 5 & 19 and Dec. 3 & 17.On select Saturday during the “Crocodilian Scratchboards” exhibition the Centers for the Arts offers free family activity days for children and adults. Enjoy a tour of this fun exhibition and then complete art projects that engage the theme of the exhibition. Arts for ACT Gallery, located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers will host an opening reception during Art Walk on Friday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. For anyone unable to make the Friday night event, then come downtown on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to view the exhibits at a slower pace. This month, ACT Gallery will feature the popular low brow artist Jerry McGreens along with portrait painter Leslie Morrow and artist Rob Goldey. Jerry McGreens began his art career after high school. He took an apprenticeship to tattoo, while attending some art classes on campus at Lesley Morrow UNLV. After his apprenticeship was over, he began tattooing full time in his home city of Las Vegas. Ten years later, he moved to Florida to continue his career. Jerry always dabbled in painting but work had kept him too busy. After spending an additional ten years tattooing and recreating someone else’s ides, he felt the need to express his own through painting full time. Jerry’s art consist of a dark blend of cute and creepy that invites the viewer to move into a world where these creatures have their own agendas. These eccentric souls explore their odd worlds and guide us through what is their reality. The world around him, his dreams, and other artists that Jerry meets with musically, lyrically, and artistically inspires him. Lesley Morrow is an artist whose paintings are raw and sensitive to the eye. She expresses the feminine experience, the mystique, Rob Goldey through figurative and portraiture that has

included both celebrity and iconic women. Capturing not only the strengths, she sees in these women and their faces but also the chaos behind the façade. She has mastered this duality in her painting. Through the body of her artworks, you can see a roadmap, almost a narrative, of the pieces of her psyche in such a way as to find her OWN core strength. As a child, Lesley was influenced by her professional illustrator parents then focused on photograJerry McGreens phy at The School of Visual Arts in New York City and at City College of San Francisco, California. After becoming a wife and mother of two children she took 25 years off from her art. Feeling lost and needing to find herself later in life, Lesley turned back to art and found her voice, painting. Rob Goldey is a self-taught artist who was born in Lexington, Ky. He spent many years in Nashville, Tenn., where he developed his unique style using pen, pencil and ink, and later on, acrylic. He currently lives in Fort Myers. Goldey’s influences are Salvador Dali, Piet Mondrian and Wayne White. Goldey has exhibited at various local venues and galleries in Fort Myers, and at Fashion Week in Naples, Florida. One of his paintings is at the Housing Authority of Fort Myers. He is currently part of the Bootleggers Gallery, which is an open air gallery in downtown Fort Myers. Goldey’s art is considered minimalist chaos, a combo of op surrealism and modern abstract. Most of what he creates with pen, pencil or ink starts with a dot and grows from there. For more details, call the gallery at 239-337-5050.

Naples Artcrafters hit 50-year anniversary

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Naples Artcrafters. For recognition of 50 years of service to the arts community, Naples Mayor Bill Barnett has proclaimed Nov. 12, 2016, as Naples Artcrafters Day. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. during the show in Cambier Park. They were originally organized 50 years ago this 2016-2017 art show season by five women. Their objective was to share their art and crafts skills and knowledge with the community of Naples and to support and develop local visual arts and crafts. Naples Artcrafters has grown over the past 50 years. The group produces seven major art fairs in October through April in the Naples area. The shows are held on the second Saturday of the month. The shows in October through February and in April are held in Cambier Park. The March show moves to Fleischmann Park. The group has the second oldest sponsored art show in the Naples area. The shows provide an opportunity for the residents and visitors to Naples and Collier County with public access to quality art work produced by local artists. All of the artists are highly juried, and they only allow artists to show work that is of the highest quality and techniques.

The shows feature fine painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, stained glass and much more, all produced by local artists. Normally there are 70 to 90 exhibiting artists that participate. The Naples Artcrafters are known as the local quality art show in the park. Naples Artcrafters is composed of individuals who have an interest in the arts and crafts. We are dedicated to supporting established local art and crafts persons and students who wish to develop their talents. Membership is open to all who meet the criteria of the constitution and bylaws. All members are expected to take active roles to produce and run the art shows. They are the only art fair in the Naples and Collier County community that is completely run by the artists. Naples Artcrafters reaches out to local schools and community organizations in providing support and donations for art programs and for much needed art supplies. These donations are presented each year at the annual recognition dinner. Many of the members work with these organizations in furtherance of their art programs. Art on the Harbor Nov. 6

Charlotte Arts, the local arts and humanities council, announces Art on the Harbor returns in November. The fine arts and book show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, harborside on the Great Lawn of Four Points by Sheraton in historic Punta Gorda. The event will give Southwest Florida artists and authors the opportunity to

showcase their latest works and eventgoers will have the opportunity to purchase beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces of art or locally-written books. Local musicians will provide live entertainment at the event. Free admission. Free parking. For more details, contact the Charlotte Arts office at 941-764-8100 or email Info@CharlotteArts.org.

Four local artists will be showing their work during November in the art gallery of the Cape Coral Public Library, which is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace. The exhibits will be available for viewing during library business hours Nov.1 - 29. Original abstract paintings by Carol M. Williams will be on display in the alcove area of the gallery. Williams is not only an artist, but is also author of the novel Burning Down the Country House. Carol expresses her love for the sun and the sea by blending the colorful drama of the Caribbean landscape into a backdrop of light in her paintings, which are rendered in acrylic and inspired by her imagination. Carol is committed to promoting childhood literacy and advocating for impoverished children worldwide to experience safe, healthy, and spiritually fulfilled lives. Carol credits her creative passions, including her love of painting, for her audacity to dream beyond the realities of an impoverished upbringing. Photographs by Dee Fehlberg will be featured in the gallery hall. Since retiring to Cape Coral, Dee has had time to enjoy her creative side and has found photography to be particularly satisfying. Contrary to the the well-worn saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Fehlberg insists that “Beauty is Beauty.” She explains: “I capture that beauty with a photo lens - as I see it from the miniscule to the grand!” In addition to the art of the lens, Dee likes to write, had a successful side business teaching ceramics and has also worked in glass, copper-plate etching and pottery sculpture. Some examples of her 3-dimensional art-

work will be featured in one of the gallery cases. A six-panel series of oil paintings by local artist Barbara Magner will be on display in one of the gallery cases. This series, titled “Christmas at the Beach” was specifically completed for the library exhibit. Most of these panels were painted from photos taken at the Cape Coral Yacht Club beach, which is a block from her home and is often the subject of her work. Ms. Magner and her husband Mike are active members of the Cape Coral Art League, and Barbara serves on the Board of Directors as Secretary. The couple can be found at Open Painting on any given Wednesday afternoon at CCAL and recently chaired the Welcome to the Big Top art show as well as the Annual January Art Fair for the league. Rounding out the cases in the library gallery will be sea shell creations by Howard Wolper. These include decorative lamps, shadow boxes, jars, and more. He has always had an attraction to the sea and its wonders. As a matter of fact, he and his wife moved here from New Hampshire in 2009 to be near Sanibel Island. “These shells,” states Howard “truly are ‘gifts from the sea.’” Howard Wolper is also a talented photographer, and his images of sunrises, local wildlife, and a variety of shells will be featured in the library gallery in December. The exhibits are sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. For more information, contact Art Gallery chairperson Monica Rahman by calling (239) 258-2991 or emailing her at monica4608@comcast.net.

Sanibel Masters Art Festival scheduled for Nov. 25 & 26

In a beautiful, secluded and shaded tropical yard in quiet Punta Gorda sits a very unique artist’s studio; a 14-foot 1964 Winnebago travel trailer. Bolts of fabric and patterns fill the rear portion of the little trailer, and three sewing machines and a serger jockey for position on a table surrounded on three sides by windows which let in the subdued light and Gulf breezes. Just outside this studio you will likely find Billie Barthelemy, one of the nation’s finest fiber and garment artists, embroidering in a chair under the Sabal Palms. Billie (her given name is Wilhelmina) sits by the canal embroidering one of her hand-made pieces, looking up occasionally to enjoy the sight of an osprey overhead, a mullet jumping in the creek, or a gopher tortoise munching on nearby foliage. Billie splits her time between Minnesota and her home in Southwest Florida. She arrives in Florida each year in early November and travels all over the state carrying her kayak and sewing machine to wonderful locations and the many art events that she participates in. She is a well know fiber artist whose garments are not only worn by her customers but several are included in the collection of museums and art centers. ACMA launches new series at library in Estero

The ACMA starts a new series Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at South County Regional Library located at 21100 Three Oaks Parkway in Estero. Songwriters at the Library will be free concerts on the second Saturday of the month for the next six months. Kicking off the first show is Bruce & Cecile Gallent and Carolyn & David Stanley. Bruce Gallent has been writing song for more than 30 years. His songs are a reflection of different times in his life and he considers them his journal. His wife, Cecile, accompanies him – playing mandolin. They have been performing together for seven years. Bruce has been in several original rock and acoustic bands that performed many of his songs at local pubs, festivals, and charity events back in New Hampshire. Cecile and Bruce moved to Fort Myers in 2011. They now enjoy playing his songs at open mikes and festivals. Bruce strums and sings his songs while Cecile adds a sweet and simple sound of the mandolin that give them a unique style that you have to hear for yourself. They have recorded one album together “Her and Me” and are presently working on their second album. Bruce runs the ACMA guitar circle every Sunday and is proud contributor to Hope by Song. Performing David's originals and songs from some of their favorite singer songwriters, Carolyn and David Stanley sing and play an eclectic mix of acoustic music. They trade off singing lead while David plays guitar and harmonica and Carolyn plays guitar, charango, or claw hammer style banjo. Back at their normal Saturday location at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, the ACMA has a big show planned with Jeff Black on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. For Jeff Black, it is his life's work that has driven him to build a career like few other singer/songwriters in the business. Boston's WUMB listeners voted Jeff Black as one of the top 100 most important Folk artists of the last 25 years. Black's songs have earned Grammy recognition, radio charttopping stats and numerous BMI awards. Although flying below the radar as a performer himself, he has been recognized by NPR as a musical pioneer in the digital age and his catalogue of critically acclaimed albums continues to grow. Composing music for film and television, his credits include numerous indie-film sound tracks and a repertoire of songs cut by artists as diverse

as Alison Krauss & Union Station, Waylon Jennings, BlackHawk, Dierks Bentley, Jon Randall, John Oates, Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush. Black has forged a reputation as a true folk troubadour entertaining audiences globally for over three decades. A master songwriter and performer in the tradition of the great storytellers, his passionate, soul driven live performances of songs from his vast catalog are not to be missed. Folklore is the 10th release from the prolific songwriter. Recorded over a two-day period in Nashville at Arcana Studios, Jeff Black arms himself with a guitar, harmonica and a banjo to traverse the clay-dust roads that trace the cutting edge of pop Jeff Black culture, delivering a collection of modern folk and acoustic classics. Opening for Jeff Black will be Ricky Baker & Jason Peters – a.k.a. Rick Cegelis and Peter Golbitz, two well known artist from Maine. They have been performing both solo and together for over 15 years. The duo has opened for well-known acts such as Fred Eaglesmith and Kelly McRae and they have spent time crafting songs and their musical talents with Richard Thompson and Shawn Colvin. Ricky Baker plays rhythm and finger-picking guitar and harmonica, while Jason Peters plays rhythm and lead guitar (acoustic and electric), slide guitar, mandolin and harmonica. These two snowbirds put on an energetic show with excellent original songs. Join the ACMA Nov. 19 for the Royal Flush Tribute Night presented by our own local ACMA singer songwriters. Dec. 1 will mark the return of the ACMA Songwriters at Sunset series at Lover’s Key State Park. Roy Schneider & Kim Mayfield with JRobert will perform at 3:30. Be sure to give yourself an extra 30 minutes to park and take the tram to the beach. The show is free, but parking is $8 per car. Roy Schneider is a singer-songwriter in the grandest tradition of Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett. But, his voice, songwriting skill, stagecraft, and instrumental talent are all his own. His gift for blending Southern-influenced folk, blues, country, and rock into a seamless genre with his own signature sound demonstrates his connection to the best in the tradition of fine roots music. Schneider's original songs have earned spots in the 30A Songwriters Festival, Telluride Blues and Brews Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Kerrville's New Folk competition. JRobert was just honored by being named this year’s Marco Island Artist of the Year. JRobert is a musician, composer, songwriter and producer. Les Stroud coming to Mann Hall Nov. 4

Les Stroud is a man of many talents, a Renaissance man of sorts. Fans of his wildly popular reality TV series “Survivorman” on the Discovery Channel know him not only for his un-surmountable survival skills and camera work, but also for his killer harmonica riffs showcased in several episodes of the show. Les is a genuine musician and he is about to start the quintessential adventure of his life. From the time he was a teenager, Les has been writing, singing and performing professionally. He has released several independent records and has the chops to back up his musical endeavors as evidenced on his forthcoming project, Survivorman; Mother Earth, featuring the first single and music video “Arctic Mistress.”. Through his travels as Survivorman, Les has been immersed in nature, experiencing first-hand the beauty and perils of Mother Earth. The songs he’s written are testimonies to these personal adventures and now he wants to spread his message of love for the Earth and preserve her greatness for generations to come. The song, “Arctic

Mistress” features Inuit Throat Singing (recorded on an iceberg during the filming of an episode of "Survivorman"), a haunting melody, and poignant lyrics. It calls on the listener to “breathe the Arctic air...” in an attempt to enlighten mankind to stop, listen, and take note of the World around us. Breathe in the message, before it’s too late. Survivorman; Mother Earth embodies all that is Les Stroud, the man and his mission, coming together in the music. “Arctic Mistress” is but a brief glimpse into what is yet to come. Come hear Les Stroud live with his 5piece band at Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall on Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. His show will entertain the audience with music, storytelling, and scenes from his travels. Tickets are available at www.bbmannpah.com or at the box office 239-4814849. A portion of the shows’ proceeds benefit CREW Land and Water Trust and the Boy Scouts of America. CREW’s mission is to protect the watershed, preserve panther and bear habitats, be a steward of clean water, and provide environmental education to the public. They have protected over 60,000 acres of land spanning Lee and Collier Counties since 1989 that include guided nature-walks, hiking, biking, birding, geocaching, and more. To support the Boy Scouts of America, enter BSA passcode when purchasing tickets at bbmannpah.com. Any proceeds to BSA will go to support their Camp Flying Eagle and Miles operations for a chance to buy a new canoe or two for their camps.

Big Smo at Dixie Roadhouse Nov. 6 A3 Concerts presents Big SMO in concert on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Dixie Roadhouse in Cape Coral. Buy tickets online at Big www.A3concerts.com or at Dixie Roadhouse. “This album is definitely about growth.” So says Smo, whose growth as a force in American music cannot be denied. Having topped 50 million views on YouTube, sold more than 450,000 tracks and dominated both the country and rap charts, the charismatic Tennessee-bred artist, outdoorsman and family man draws fans from across all social boundaries.

How does he do it? He speaks truth. He lays down epic rhymes that challenge listeners to party when they can, to champion the values on which they were (or should have been) raised, to look straight into the eyes of life, to laugh and love and even get angry every Smo once in a while if that helps make things right. These many sides of Smo are represented proudly on his latest album. Yes, We The People is about growth, in creative horizons as well as in a worldview nurtured by time and trial. But it’s also about the growth it inspires among his ever-expanding audience, who see their own stories mirrored in his. Dixie Roadhouse is located at 1023 SE 47th Terrace in Cape Coral.

River District

Festival of Trees Nov. 30 - Dec. 4

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Goodwill’s annual Festival of Trees is returning to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center for its tenth year. The Festival of Trees, a holiday tradition in the Fort Myers River District, is the signature event of the Southwest Florida Goodwill Foundation. This year’s festival opens to the public on Nov. 30 and runs until Dec. 4. Admission to view the trees is $2, with children under 12 attending free. The festival displays more than 20 lavishly decorated trees, designed by businesses and individuals in the community. Festival visitors will be able to acquire raffle tickets throughout the festival for a chance to win one (or more) of the trees, most of which are valued at more than $750. Tickets are available for a suggested minimum donation of $10. “We experimented with a tree raffle last year, and the response was overwhelming. Everyone wanted a ticket,” says Kirsten O’Donnell, director of public relations and marketing for Goodwill. “This year, every tree will be up for raffle, with the exception of our signature Teddy Bear Tree.” This year’s Festival of Trees will see other changes, says O’Donnell. A special preview party will provide a sneak peek of the trees, and

also include a wine tasting with food pairings. The preview will be held Nov. 29, with tickets available at www.GoodwillTrees.com. “The Preview Party takes the place of our Tux & Trees Gala,” explains Sue Hegarty, community relations coordinator for Goodwill. “We’ll also have a silent auction and also a live auction of the Very Beary Christmas tree.” More new additions to the festival include an Ugly Sweater Party and Contest on Nov. 30, and a Paint Your Own Tree party with Painting with a Twist on Dec. 1. Return visitors to the festival will enjoy the River District Holiday Stroll and Art Walk on Friday, Dec. 2, and the popular Santa’s Block Party on Dec. 3. Santa’s Block Party includes Brunch with Santa, hosted by the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (www.sbdac.com), a holiday vendor showcase, and a Children’s Holiday Workshop that includes games, crafts, movies, and more. Tickets will be available online and at the door. Last year, the Festival of Trees raised more than $78,000 to support Goodwill’s mission of helping people in the Southwest Florida community by providing life-changing opportunities to employment and independence.
