FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE

Steel Magnolias Amy Tribbey, Rachel Burttram and Betsy Helmer in Steel Magnolias. Photo by Joe Dafeldecker

Florida Repertory Theatre presents Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling, a heart-warming comedy about the power of friendship, in the Historic Arcade Theatre now through Nov. 7. The show features three Florida Rep ensemble members, Rachel Burttram, Sara Morsey and Patricia Idlette, alongside three actresses making their Florida Rep debuts. “This is a perfect play to kick off our season in the Historic Arcade Theatre,” said associate artistic director Jason Parrish. “Robert Harling wrote this play for his sister and based the character of Shelby on her, and the result is moving, uplifting, and incredibly funny. These now iconic characters came out of Harling’s childhood in the south, and are a true love letter to the strong women who raised him, the power of love, and the American South. It will be a thrill to bring Shelby, M’Lynn, Clairee, Ouiser, Annelle and Truvy to life for our audiences – and to create a working beauty shop on the Arcade Theatre stage!” Steel Magnolias is the inspiration for the now classic 1989 film about the enduring bonds of female friendship. At Truvy’s salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, six women gather to swap stories, share gossip, and of course, have their hair done. But when tragedy strikes, the women prove they can weather any storm as long as they’re there to lift one another up. Florida Rep ensemble member Rachel Burttram plays beauty shop owner Truvy Jones, Sara Morsey returns after a season away from the Rep as the acid-tongued Ouiser Boudreaux, and Patricia 6 - November 2018

Idlette will play the quick-witted, former town first lady Clairee Belcher. Amy Tribbey joins the three as M'Lynn, Betsy Helmer as Annelle and Alison Campbell as Shelby. Tribbey is a regional theatre veteran whose appearances include Paper Mill Playhouse, the Hangar Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, and the recent Broadway run of Gore Vidal's The Best Man, as well as a recurring role on HBO’s The Americans. Helmer's recent credits include Salt Lake City's Pioneer Theatre Company and Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and Arizona-based Campbell appears after a season with Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota. Jason Parrish directs Steel Magnolias and leads a creative team that includes ensemble set and lighting designer Jim Hunter (The Miracle Worker), sound designer Katie Lowe (Becoming Dr. Ruth), costume designer Brad Musgrove (Florida Rep debut), and ensemble stage manager Janine Wochna (Cabaret). Tickets are $55 and $49 for regular performances. Single tickets are available online at www.FloridaRep.org and through the box office at 239-332-4488. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. New this season, Florida Rep's parking lot will open two hours before each performance and offers guests limited free parking across the street from the Arcade Theatre. Just check out this great performer’s bio ... Best known for his superb vocals of Frankie Valli, Dean Martin, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Stylistics and Smokey Robinson. Hand to God, 24-Hour Playwriting Project and Every Christmas Story Ever Told at Lab Theater THEATRE

The Laboratory Theater of Florida has a busy schedule in November. Hand to God continues now through Nov. 4 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida in downtown Fort Myers. Admit it ... you've had certain ... impulses, right? Ones you've thought about, but would never actually say out loud or act upon? It's human nature. And that darkest human nature is exposed when a Texas church youth-group assignment to create original hand puppets goes strangely awry. Cypress, Texas, is a small, conservative, and extremely devout town. Margery is a recent widow who needs something to occupy her time so the local pastor has asked her to run the church puppet club, whose members include her son Jason; his next-door neighbor Jessica (that Jason has a crush on); and Timmy, the neighborhood troublemaker whose mother attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at the church. The puppet club has been asked to put on a performance at the church next Sunday at the request of Pastor Greg. Jason's hand puppet, Tyrone, takes on a life of his own, announces that he is Satan, leads them into sin, and expresses secrets that the characters would rather have left unacknowledged. Director Nykkie Rizley says “At its heart, Hand to God is about our search for answers, connections, and comforts. Yes, it is raw and raunchy, it is foul and sexy, it is violent and it is hilarious. All of this rolled into one. But, it is also soft and gentle and poignant. It slaps me in the face with humor and then pulls at my heartstrings. It is really quite an experience.”

Actor Steven Coe, who is playing Jason, adds, "It's a very irreverent show, with a scarred, earnest heart. It's very personal and raw, which you'll forget in its loud moments of fire and ridiculous humor, which was artfully and intentionally written. It's technically impressive, it's hardcore, it's a great show to work on and hopefully to watch." Remaining performance dates are Oct. 25, 26, 27, Nov. 1, 2, 3 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 28, Nov. 3 and 4 at 2 p.m. The annual 24-Hour Playwriting Project takes place in mid-November. Playwrights will bring their sleeping bags and coffee mugs to Lab Theater, where they will be assigned a theme, a director, and actors. Within just twentyfour hours, you will see the fruits of their labor when we stage all of their 20-minute oneact plays! Judged by a panel of area theater and arts professionals. A hugely popular event, this will be presented Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Every Christmas Story Ever Told by James FitzGerald, John K. Alvarez, Michael Carelton & Will Knapp will be presented Nov. 30 – Dec. 22. It’s the holidays! Time for the classics – Rudolph, Frosty, Ebeneezer, Scrooge, the Nutcracker – and many more! But Maybe not the way we’re accustomed to hearing them. In what can best be called a holiday mash-up, actors take beloved stories and traditions from around the world and turn them upside-down and sideways. Tickets are available to purchase at www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. For more info, visit www.LaboratoryTheaterFlorida.com or at 1634 Woodford Ave., Fort Myers River District.

Charlotte Players kicks off November with an American theater classic, Arsenic and Old Lace, playing at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte Nov. 8 - 18. Director Ian Bisset has assembled a talented cast of local performers for this farcical black comedy the New York Times said was “so funny that none of us will ever forget it.” The play revolves around the Brewster family, which includes a pair of spinster sisters who have taken to murdering lonely old men, and their two brothers, one of whom thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt and the other on the run for murder. Their nephew is thrown into a panic when he realizes what’s going on, trying to protect and discourage his aunts while maintaining a relationship with his fiancé. At the end of the month, the Charlotte Players present he fourth annual Madrigal Dinner over three nights (Nov. 29 Dec. 1) at First Alliance Church in Port Charlotte. The dinner is a medieval celebration of Christmas, with singing, dancing and musical productions by a cast of over 75 talented actors, carolers, dancers,

gymnasts and jugglers. Enjoy a Wassail reception with warm spiced cider, then a formal call to dinner where a feast will be jubilantly paraded into the great dining hall. The evening will be filled with ceremonious holiday pomp and tradition. December begins with another “holiday” production, Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold, at the Cultural Center Theater in Port Charlotte. Denise Fennell returns as Sister, everyone’s favorite nun, seeking to solve the mystery of the gold presented to the Christ child. Sister’s “CSI: Bethlehem-style” forensic investigation turns her mission into an educational experience for her audience, with lots of laughs along the way. On New Year’s Eve, local phenom Ken Crisp presents “Bring on the New Year” at the Langdon, with cabaret-style singers and live musicians. The evening will include singing, music, laughs and a special toast. Shows will be held at 6:39 p.m. and 9 p.m., making sure everyone gets home in time to watch the ball drop.

Hirdie Girdie opens new season on Sanibel ART

Hirdie Girdie Gallery on Sanibel is opening for the 20182019 season on Nov. 5 and welcomes two new artists: Wood turner Chuck Biggs and oil painter Bill Hudson. The gallery invites the public to meet them at the first reception of the season on Nov. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. Chuck Biggs likes working with his Chuck Biggs hands, and especially enjoys making rounded items on a wood turning lathe. His favorite wood is Florida Mahogany. Chuck finds it challenging to consider not only the shape of the wood, but also various characteristics, such as density and circular rings, in determining the final product. Additionally, he must revise his original plan as he works, due to imperfections in the wood encountered along the way.

His pieces are finished with oil-based polyurethane for better durability, and to bring out the natural color and grain of the wood. Bill Hudson was always an artist at heart, but began painting seriously after moving to Taos, New Mexico in 2006. His art has evolved from Bill Hudson realistic to abstract interpretations of the subject, which he describes as “approaching painting as play.” He enjoys arranging the elements in a pleasing, interesting way, and balancing tonal relationships, shape, color, and texture to create a visually appealing painting. Bill works in traditional oils using impasto techniques. His goal is to capture the qualities of the subject that touch him, and to accurately and honestly express his response to them. Hirdie Girdie Gallery is located at 2490 Library Way on Sanibel. For more info, call 239-395-0027 or visit www.hirdiegirdiegallery.com.

In the month of November, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts will is hosting not one, but two artists receptions. A meet and greet reception with Sarasota artist Laine Nixon is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Nixon’s exhibition will be on display through Dec. 1. Kurdish artist Ilyas Kirkan will be at the gallery for a special presentation of select works, with a meet and greet scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. A closing gathering is Laine Nixon also scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 24 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Laine Nixon was born in 1970 in Norman, Okla., and she is a visual artist based in Sarasota. Nixon earned a BS in mathematics from the University of Tennessee and a BFA in painting from the University of South Florida. She has participated in numerous regional exhibitions, including solo exhibitions at Gallery 221@HCC in 2017 and at Alfstad & Contemporary in 2018. “Two main rituals carry over from my childhood into to my art making are, finding refuge in the magnificent sunsets and storms of the Great Plains, and questioning all statements of authority. Still a skeptic seeking refuge, I pursue my work through a studio practice, developing paintings that subtly embody the conflict between visual perception and

the physical object – or between thought and thing. I tend to delight in an optimistic ambiguity about things, which in turn leads me to all kinds of other good things such as deeper understanding, alternative perspectives, a sense of mystery, or even peace and joy,” comments Nixon. Entirely self-taught, Kurdish artist Ilyas Kirkan Ilyas Kirkan was born in Turkey in 1972. He grew up in Ishøj, Denmark, and lived there from 1978 to 1996. He then moved to London until 2014. It is there where he started his arts career. Currently, he resides in Lisbon since 2014. His presentation at DAAS Co-Op will be his first U.S. exhibition. “My upbringing exposed me to a great mixture of cultures, religions, languages and differences. Through creativity I have decided to draw upon the positive aspects of being brought up as a product of these cultural differences,” says Kirkan, who will be visiting Florida exclusively for this pop-up exhibition. For more about the gallery, visit www.daascoop.com or call 239590-8645. Harbour View Gallery showcasing art of Maureen Ginipro, Diana Urso Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral will welcome featured artists Maureen Ginipro (Zentangle drawings) and Diana Urso (handwove triangle shawls) at a reception on Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. “I am basically self taught in the Zentangle form of pen and ink drawing. It is an art form which involves making repetitive, structured patterns. I find Maureen Ginipro these patterns both relaxing and interesting to do and I was drawn to this type of art and it’s bold appearance,” says Maureen Ginipro of Sanibel. “I have been interested in art in most forms for years but it was only after I moved to Southwest Florida that I was able to enjoy the many classes and workshops that the area has available,” adds Ginipro.

Diana Urso creates one-of-a-kind, hand woven triangle shawls for her distinctive customers. Each shawl is woven on and upright, triangle loom, totally by hand and can take from 6-36 hours to complete, depending on fiber choice and size. Triangle shawls are made of one continuous fiber strand; both warp and weft are worked simultaneously. This wearable art provides the finishing touch for an exclusive, elegant look for today’s contemporary woman. Draped or tied loosely over a summer dress or a winter jacket, triangle shawls are perfect for day or evening wear, suitable for all seasons. Sizing is adjustable from 5 feet to 7 feet measured across the Diana Urso top, not including 6 inch fringe. Their work will be on display through November. The gallery is located at 5789 Cape Harbour Drive, suite 104, in the Shops at Cape Harbour in Cape Coral.

Matanzas Craft Beer Fest on the Bay Nov. 10

Matanzas on the Bay on Fort Myers Beach announces its first ever craft beer event, Matanzas Craft Beer Fest on the Bay, on tap from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Bringing local breweries, musicians and cuisine to Matanzas on the Bay’s waterfront setting along the back bay of Fort Myers Beach, the fundraising event will benefit Operation Open Arms, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care and treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Soulixer Disorder (PTSD) in military personnel. Matanzas on the Bay has partnered with J.J. Taylor Distributing to bring five local beer vendors to this first-time event, including Bone Hook Brewing Company, Fort Myers Brewing Company, Momentum Brewhouse, Palm City Brewing and Point Ybel Brewing Company. Soulixer will perform from noon to 2 p.m., introducing a blend of indie rock and soul. Soulixer’s performance will be followed by Sheena Brook, local singer-songwriter and The Voice contestant, from 2 to 4 p.m. Matanzas on the Bay is also serving up a selection of its popular cuisine, with tasty bites offered throughout the event. Guests can also participate in a number of prize drawings, with proceeds also benefiting

SW Florida Symphony starts new season The Southwest Florida Symphony, Lee County’s only professional orchestra, opens its 58th season with Masterworks I: Rhapsody in Two on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. Masterworks I: Rhapsody in Two is conducted by the Southwest Florida Symphony’s internationally renowned music director, Maestro Nir Kabaretti, and features special guest artist, multi-award winning pianist Awadagin Pratt. During this unique performance, the symphony will perform two breathtaking, yet musically contrasting rhapsodies George Gershwin’s metropolitan-esque Rhapsody in Blue, and Ernst Dohnányi’s quintessentially folk American Rhapsody. The performance also features another piece by an American composer, William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3. In addition to a stunning performance of three symphonic works inspired by life in America, the Southwest Florida Symphony will hold a food drive at Masterworks I: Rhapsody in Two, in support of the Harry Chapin Food 42 - November 2018

Awadagin Pratt Bank. The symphony asks patrons attending this concert to bring non-perishable food items for Thanksgiving distribution to families in Lee County.

Born in Pittsburgh, Awadagin Pratt began studying piano at the age of six. Three years later, having moved to Normal, Illinois with his family, he also began studying violin. At the age of 16, he entered the University of Illinois where he studied piano, violin, and conducting. He subsequently enrolled at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he became the first student in the school's history to receive diplomas in three performance areas – piano, violin and conducting. Pratt recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Johns Hopkins as well as an honorary doctorate from Illinois Wesleyan University after delivering the commencement address in 2012. The Nov. 10 performance is at 7:30 p.m., with Maestro Kabaretti’s pre-concert lecture taking place at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost between $25 and $105 and may be purchased online at www.swflso.org, by visiting the Southwest Florida Symphony Box Office at 8290 College Parkway, Suite 103 in Fort Myers, by calling 239-418-1500 or at the door, one and a half hours prior to the concert. New songwriter showcase debuts at Fort Myers Library

ACMA: The Hummingbirds,

Adam Burrows, Ryanhood

The Americana Community Music Association announced a new Songwriters Showcase series starting this month at the Downtown Fort Myers Regional Library. Songwriters on the Plaza will be held every second Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Concerts will take place in the Amphitheater, which is located on South Cornog Plaza. Bring a chair or a blanket, shows will be moved indoors depending on weather. The kick off show is Nov. 13 with Ray Cerbone, Robert Bidney and Annie Wenz. The ACMA welcomes The Hummingbirds to their listening room on Nov. 3. The Hummingbirds are husband-wife team S.G. and Rachel Wood. Born and raised in Detroit, now residing in Tampa, their music is both northern and southern Americana, blending both grit, and self reliance with hospitality, and charm. They play old guitars through old amps, bang drums, and even pluck banjos sometimes. Their live stage chemistry and organic duo harmonies immediately captivate and charm audience members while Rachel’s solid command of rhythm guitar, peppered with S.G.’s thoughtful lead work, keep their songs rolling in true Americana form. S.G. and Rachel were fans of classic country music, as well as myriad of other genres when they started their band in the early 2000s. And while they continue to draw on these influences, what comes out in their own songwriting is a hybrid sound all their own, genuine & playful, earnest & soulful. Their songs twist through tales of loss & heartache, while others whisper sounds of hope, love, and journeys from the road. Through the past years, The Hummingbirds have been doing it all. Their newest album, “13 Days” released in 2015 features 13 songs about rivers & rattlesnakes, the cold & the road, and

Mastersingers start season in November

The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers begin their 18th season in November with a fundraising event on one weekend and an innovative concert on the next. The group will hold a fundraising high tea service, Tea with the Mastersingers, on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the lovely White Orchid at Oasis, 3027 East Riverside Drive, Fort Myers. The season’s first concert, an innovative program called Shall We Dance, featuring the Mastersingers Chamber Chorus and dancers from the M & N Studio in Fort Myers, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Sanibel Community Church, 1740 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Tea with the Mastersingers kicks off at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 and will be the second annual fundraiser the Mastersingers have held at the unique riverside venue that is the White Orchid. Meteorologist Jason Dunning of NBC-2 morning news will again emcee the event that features sweet and savory high tea fare provided by noted area caterer, Jamie and Jacob. Entertainment for the afternoon will be provided by the 2018 winners of the Ruth DeMaster Vocal Scholarship competition that the Mastersingers hold each April. Tickets for the event are $60 and can be purchased online at www.mastersingersfm.com. Shall We Dance is a concert that veers off the Mastersingers usual programming path. The afternoon will feature the Mastersingers Chamber Chorus singing selections from Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, Broadway show tunes, and other choral pieces with a dance theme. Joining them will be dancers from the M & N Dance Studio, 12450 Metro Pkwy, Fort Myers, going through their paces in dances like the tango and the waltz. All of this will be accompanied by two of the finest pianists in the area, longtime Mastersingers accompanist Janet Carter and Judy Richey. The program will be held at Sanibel Community Church. The concert is free, and a goodwill offering will be taken up. The 18th Mastersingers season has many more concerts planned through spring of 2019. For more information on the full season of events you can log onto www.mastersingersfm.com.

Gulf Coast Symphony and Gulfshore Ballet present The Nutcracker Dec. 1 at Mann Hall

The Gulfshore Ballet and Gulf Coast Symphony will present The Nutcracker on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. The only Nutcracker in Lee County performed with live symphony orchestra, the production features Arts Ballet Theatre principal dancers Mary Carmen Catoya and Kevin Zong. The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet composed by Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann that centers on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. It is a great introduction to classical music and dance for all ages. Mary Carmen Catoya, Prima ballerina of Miami, was born in Venezuela. She began her professional career at the age of thirteen, and danced with the Youth Ballet of Venezuela, the Contemporary Ballet of Caracas, Cleveland Ballet, and as a principal with the National Ballet of Caracas, where she was coached and trained by Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev. She danced as a principal at the Miami City Ballet from 1999 to 2015. Catoya has danced extensively abroad at many festivals and galas, including an international gala before the King and Queen of Spain, the inauguration of the Theater Simon Bolivar in Brazil, Dance Aspen, and the Gala of Stars at the Festival International de Santander. She was the prima ballerina responsible to open the Arsht Center in Miami with her interpretation of Don Quixote.

Kevin Zong is a graduate of the Ellison Ballet of New York where he studied for the last three years trained by Edward Ellison himself and under full scholarship. He started his ballet training at the First State Ballet Theater in Wilmington, Delaware under the tutelage of Pasha and Kristina Kambalov. He also attended the Shanghai Dance School, and summer programs at the American Ballet Theater, Next Generation Ballet in Florida, the School of American Ballet and at the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, Denmark. Mr. Zong was awarded the Silver Medal at the Indianapolis International Ballet Competition in 2015, and First and Second prize awards at the Youth American Grand Prix Semi-finals in 2014 and 2015 along with several full-merit scholarships. He began his professional career last season at Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. Since then, he has performed soloist roles, and performed in Mexico along with Principal dancers Mary Carmen Catoya and Janis Liu. Gulfshore Ballet is Southwest Florida’s premier not-for-profit school of classical ballet. Franklin Gamero and Iliana Lopez are the Gulfshore Ballet artistic directors. Established in 1996, the Gulf Coast Symphony is led by music & executive director Dr. Andrew M. Kurtz. Tickets for The Nutcracker start at $29 and may be purchased by calling the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall Box Office at (239) 481-4849 or online at www.GulfCoastSymphony.org.

My Spirit Sang All Day Nov. 2 & 4 The Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida is all about “spirit” and “song” and its November concerts highlight this tradition in a special way with two free admission performances Friday, Nov. 2 in Cape Coral (7 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church) and Sunday, Nov. 4 on Sanibel (4 p.m. at Sanibel Community Church). Chorale artistic director Dr. Trent Brown will conduct. Taking inspiration from British composer Gerald Finzi’s choral piece, “My Spirit Sang 46 - November 2018

All Day,” which will open the concert, Dr. Brown weaves together traditional and contemporary choral music to create a uniquely entertaining and emotional experience that will delight and amaze audiences. “This concert features music that explores how talented composers pay tribute to the creative and complex human spirit through song … from praising God, to the stage, to soaring melodies and dance, to love, and to joy,” says Dr. Brown.

As a gift to the community, admission to chorale produced concerts is free. Tickets may be printed online at www.SymphonicChorale.org. As is the chorale’s tradition at its November concerts they recognize our veterans. They will be collecting hotel-size toiletries (shampoos, toothpaste, etc.) in the lobbies at these concerts to be distributed to veterans in need. For more info, call 239-560-5695. Drake White, The LACS, LoCash & Bret Michaels at The Ranch SAM GALLOWAY CONCERT SERIES

The Sam Galloway Concert Series welcomes a long list of national artists to The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers over the next few months. Drake White is on the concert schedule for Nov. 2, and The LACS will perform at The Ranch Nov. 3 as part of the Sam Galloway Concert Series. LoCash is scheduled for Nov. 30. Rocker Bret Michaels will be at The Ranch on Dec. 7. To listen to Drake White’s music is to fully experience the soul and rhythm of his upbringing in the Appalachian foothills of Northeastern Alabama. The undeniable sound of his soulful voice has whipped concert audiences across the country into a frenzy as Drake and his band, The Big Fire, raise the roof and summon spirits to life onstage. It’s equal parts Baptist tent revival and amped-up southern rock festival. As you watch Drake crank the energy level up higher and higher throughout the night, you feel as if you’d walked in on a live gospel album backed up by all-stars from The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The same fire that drives Drake to pour his entire being in to those performances also demands that he continue exploring and refining that country soul sound, which the world first heard on his debut album, 2016’s Spark. America has been through a lot these past few years. Clay “Uncle Snap” Sharpe and Brian “Rooster” King know it better than most. But as The LACS, they’ve had a unique view of where we’ve been, where we’re going — and what parts of our identity haven’t changed at all. On American Rebelution, their aptly titled sixth album, The LACS take all that they’ve witnessed, roll it up in a unique sound they call “dirt rock” and lay down the truth as they see it. Yes, these 12 tracks stand on the hip-hop/country/Southern rock bedrock Clay and Brian pioneered along with a handful of other innovators. But that’s just the beginning of this story. Creating a sound that fuses modern Country and classic heartland rock with an edgy vocal blend, Wheelhouse Records’ LoCash is the Country music duo made up of singer-songwriters Chris Lucas and Preston Brust; natives of Baltimore, and Indianapolis, respectively. With two albums and eight charting singles to their credit,

LoCash broke out in 2015 with their gracious gold-certified hit, “I Love This Life," followed by the flirtatious gold-certified #1 smash, “I Know Somebody” – their first trip to the top of the Country radio airplay charts – and 2017’s fun-loving romantic anthem “Ring on Every Finger.” All three singles were part of their album, The Fighters, which was released in the summer of 2016 to Top 15 success. In 2017, they earned their first round of awards show recognition, nominated at the ACM Awards for New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year, the CMT Music Awards for Duo Video of the Year (“I Know Somebody”), and the CMA Awards for Vocal Duo of the Year. Their latest single “Feels Like A Party,” is the pair’s first release with their new label. Also in November, two tribute bands are scheduled to perform at The Ranch. They include Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime on Nov. 8 and Pig Floyd (Pink Floyd tribute) on Nov. 24. In early 2019, The Wailers will perform Jan. 13, Clay Walker is scheduled for Jan. 18, Eli Young Band for Feb. 1, Josh Gracin for Feb. 9 and Neil McCoy returns to The Ranch on Feb. 15. Collie Buddz is scheduled for March 27, and Tracy Byrd will perform March 30. The Sam Galloway Concert Series was started in the fall of 2014 to help bring awareness to Community Cooperative (The Soup Kitchen) and the good work they do in the community. The concert series features rock and country artists on a regular basis at the venue. Portions of the profits of each concert go to help Community Cooperative feed the community. For every pound of food donated, Sam Galloway Ford donates $1 to Community Cooperative. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the concerts at The Ranch. For tickets & details, visit www.theranchfortmyers.com. The Ranch can be reached at 239-985-9839. For most concerts, the doors open at 7 p.m. at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon, 2158 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. November 2018 - 53

RockFest 80s Nov. 10-11 at Miramar Amphitheater

Are you ready to rock? The third annual RockFest 80s music festival is coming your way. This year, the site of the two-day celebration of musical madness is Miramar Amphitheater, the crown jewel of Miramar Regional Park. On Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 11, (Veterans Day weekend) some of the biggest names from the greatest decade of rock music with endless unforgettable hits will grace the stages at the new Miramar Amphitheater. Vince Neil will bring such Motley Crue classics as “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Shout At The Devil” and “Kickstart My Heart” to the stage. Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach will rock your world with “Youth Gone Wild” and melt your heart with “I Remember You. “Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley is gonna shred your brain into a million pieces. You’ll get the chance to sway to Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian” and Winger is guaranteed bring it bigtime. That’s just the tip of this power-chord iceberg. There’ll be sets by Cinderella’s Tom Keifer, Kix, Firehouse, Eric Martin from Mr. Big, featuring Trixter, the famed New York rockers Zebra,

Steelheart, Lynch Mob and Nelson, with more acts to come. One of the great things about Rockfest: local acts get to share the spotlight. Coral Springs’ own Stellar Revival, who opened for Bon Jovi at the Forum in Los Angeles last year, is back and another So-Flo favorite, and Big Rock Band, South Florida’s #1 band, will show the home folks what they got. This might sound hard to believe, but there’s a chance you’ll want to do something other than stand in the crowd cheering on your favorite acts all day and night. That’s where Muscle Car Alley comes in. The “ultimate muscle car experience” features three dozen mean machines spanning the last 60 years. Once your automotive needs are fulfilled, you’ll probably take a stroll down Vendor Row. More than 20 vendors will be waiting with top-flight memorabilia, ready to sell you

both artist and custom-designed Rockfest merchandise. Sooner or later, your hunger and thirst will demand your attention. Fear not – there’ll be plenty of bars (including a beer garden) and tons of tasty food offerings lining the midway food and beverage location. The clock may keep on ticking, but at RockFest 80s, you get to celebrate the decade when MTV was king, the Sunset Strip was the center of the universe and some of the greatest music of your life was being made and played. In addition to all the exciting music, two extremely important elements to the Rockfest 80s music festival are paying homage to our veterans and our charity alliances. Rockfest is proud to be associated with the James Jr. Fund and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. RockFest is asking all attendees to join in and support the charities by bringing an unwrapped toy to the festival; there will be collection boxes at the entrances (please no stuffed animals). One-and two-day general admission and VIP tickets are available. For more information on Rockfest 80s at Miramar Amphitheater (located at 16801 Miramar Pkwy, Miramar,) visit www.rockfest80s.com. Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

High-energy creativity, unique “art supplies” and playful beachside fun characterize the International Sand Art Competition, set to provide an intriguing experience for spectators over Thanksgiving weekend in Key West. Visitors can watch nine leading U.S. and international sand sculptors construct and display large-scale creations Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 21 - 25, on the Atlantic Ocean beach at Casa Marina, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, at 1500 Reynolds St. Scheduled competitors are Jakub Zimacek from the Czech Republic; champion sculptor Joo Heng Tan of Singapore; international award winner Fergus Mulvany of Ireland; Canadian-born master Abe Waterman; defending champion Morgan Rudluff of San Francisco, California; competition veteran Dan Belcher of St. Louis, Missouri; Boston, Massachusetts’ Deborah Barrett-Cutulle; and husband-and-wife team Adam Russell and Kelly Lever, Key West residents and sculptors of functional pottery who are turning to the medium of sand. According to competition organizer Marianne van den Broek, owner of Key West’s Just Sand And Water LLC, each entrant is to receive approximately 7 tons of sand. They have four days to 70 - November 2018

craft their sculptures out of only sand and water, using hand tools such as trowels and brushes but no electric tools, molds or glue. Visitors can observe the artists at work on their beachside creations from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 21-23, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. Viewing is free. As well as watching the sculptures take shape, spectators can search the sand to compete for artwork, spa services, water sports adventures, gift certificates to Key West restaurants and more at the event’s annual Treasure Dig. The dig is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23. Kids and adults also can create their own sand artistry in a designated area. Judging is to take place Saturday afternoon after the sculptors put the final touches on their work. In addition, spectators can cast votes for the coveted People’s Choice Award. Winners are to be announced at a 5 p.m. ceremony. For more event info, visit online at www.sandartkeywest.com For Key West visitor information, go to www.fla-keys.com/keywest or call 1-800-LAST-KEY. Parrot Heads

to gather Oct. 31 - Nov. 4

Several thousand admirers of Jimmy Buffett, known as “Parrot Heads,” are flocking to the island credited with inspiring the multitalented entertainer’s signature sound for their 27th annual “Meeting of the Minds” convention. Events are scheduled Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, in Key West, the laidback locale that fed Buffett’s early creativity and figures prominently in albums such as “A1A,” named for the highway leading to the island city. In the mid-1980s Buffett founded his first Margaritaville Store in Key West’s Lands End Village. Today located on Duval Street beside the Margaritaville Café, it remains a mecca for Parrot Heads. Events during the 2018 convention include performances by Buffett band members and friends — including longtime cohorts Marshall Chapman, Roger Bartlett and Will Kimbrough — as well as a rocking street concert, charity events and beachside musical performances at the Casa Marina, a Waldorf Astoria
