Moving forward
So many of us are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Irma and may be for quite some time. Whether we experienced power outages, loss of business, flooding, structural damages or personal harm, we know the impacts of this terrible storm could have been much worse. In the months ahead, we will all need to find some level of normalcy in our lives again. For some it may take longer than others. Nonetheless, we the residents and businesses of Southwest Florida will endure and move forward. We are blessed to be able to call Southwest Florida our home. It is a little bit of paradise here, and we are a destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors from other geographies. People come to our beautiful area of the world to escape their daily routines and experience all the glorious beaches and attractions that we have to offer. With that said, it is time for us to pick up the pieces and prepare for a new season of tourists, visitors and winter residents. We need them more than ever as we rebuild our tourism economy together. We offer so many levels of entertainment here in Southwest Florida. We have so many fine theatre groups, orchestras, fine art, comedy clubs, restaurants and musical talent here. Additionally, we boast some of the finest festivals that promote fine art, great food and live music. Yes, we need our snowbirds to return in record numbers and help rebuild our economy, but we also need to take a little time for ourselves and make sure we get some time to enjoy some of our own entertainment. It is because of all the great arts and entertainment offerings in Southwest Florida that Happenings Magazine has been fortunate enough to be published the past 22 years. So, take a moment and read through the magazine and see the wonderful opportunities for all of us to take a little time for ourselves. Together, we will make it through this storm. Kathy and I would like to thank everyone for their kind words,
generosity and encouragement through all of this. Our clients, partners and friends have been most kind as we rebuild from our losses during this storm. And to our readers, we truly appreciate your loyalty to Happenings Magazine and to our sister publication, Lee County Family News. We are grateful for your support, and we look forward to our future together.

Florida Rep opens with Outside Mullingar
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Florida Repertory Theatre has opened its 20th anniversary season with Outside Mullingar, a delightful romantic comedy by John Patrick Shanley, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony-Winning author of Doubt and Moonstruck. The production runs in the ArtStage Studio Theatre now to Oct. 22. Outside Mullingar unfolds in the picturesque, Irish countryside and follows the unlikely romance of two lovable misfits. Anthony Reilly and Rosemary Muldoon are farmers who haven’t got a clue when it comes to love. These hopeless singletons will need to overcome a bitter land feud, old family rivalries, and their own romantic fears before they can find happiness. Full of dark humor and poetic prose, John Patrick Shanley’s tenderhearted portrait reminds us it’s never too late to take a chance on love. "This is the perfect play to open our 20th season," said producing artistic director Robert Cacioppo. "Not only is it a masterfully written love story, but it brings together some of Florida Rep's most beloved ensemble members both onstage and in the creative team. This play is witty, charm-
ing and was written by one of the best American writers working today. You are in for a treat." Outside Mullingar features Florida Rep ensemble members Rachel Burttram, Brendan Powers and Viki Boyle, as well as guest artist, Martin LaPlatney, who returns after appearing in Florida Rep's nationally acclaimed production of One Slight Hitch in 2016. Longtime ensemble members, Burttram and Powers worked together for the first time in Florida Rep's 2008 production of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt and have been seen numerous times since. Burttram was last seen in Best of Enemies and The House of Blue Leaves, and Powers in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Mousetrap. Viki Boyle returns after appearances in To Kill a Mockingbird and Over the River and Through the Woods. Chris Clavelli, another longtime ensemble member, directs the production after past successes with Florida Rep's nationally acclaimed productions of The Cocktail Hour, The House of Blue Leaves and One Slight Hitch. She Kills Monsters on Sugden stage in Naples
The Naples Players offer escape at its finest with award-winning playwright Qui Nguyen’s comedic journey into the world of fantasy role-playing games with She Kills Monsters on stage Oct. 11 through Nov. 5 at the Sugden Theatre. At a time when we all could use a little break from reality, She Kills Monsters offers two hours non-stop action filled with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, epic battles with multi-headed monsters and a story of strength and resilience that reminds us that even the most difficult obstacles and disappointments can be overcome and that a take no prisoners superhero resides somewhere inside all of us. Agnes loses herself in her sister’s game to reclaim their connection and through the help or of the homicidal fairy Farrah (Kylie Campbell), the nasty ogre Orcus (Mike Santos) and a score of unforgettable characters she finds it. “She Kills Monsters is a reminder of the importance of community and the strength we find in it,” said TNP’s artistic director Bryce Alexander. “As we rebuild our community following hurricane Irma, it is more important than ever that we reach out to those around us and remind them that we are all connected and ready and able to support each other.” The Naples Players’ production of She Kills Monsters opens Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a red carpet celebration including hors d’oeuvres by Sage Catering, Beer tastings by Riptide and special

Sylvia returns to Florida Repertory stage
Florida Repertory Theatre’s 20th anniversary season continues with a revival of the now classic comedy Sylvia by A.R. Gurney. The Wall Street Journal called Florida Rep’s 2011 production of the play “clever and cute in all the right ways!” The production runs in the Historic Arcade Theatre Oct. 24 to Nov. 15 with four nearly sold-out previews Oct. 24 - 26. Florida Rep ensemble members Michelle Damato and Carrie Lund return to the roles that garnered them national acclaim in 2011. Damato stars as the street-smart pooch, Sylvia, and Lund as the long-suffering wife who must confront her husband’s mid-life crisis. Ensemble member Maureen Heffernan also returns to direct after recently helming last spring’s world premiere of Doublewide and two previous nationally acclaimed Florida Rep productions, Dancing at Lughnasa (2009) and The Little Foxes (2013). “I could think of no better way to celebrate our 20th anniversary than to revive this comedy,” said producing artistic director Robert Cacioppo. “In our 19-year history, Sylvia is the number one requested revival by our patrons, and Michelle Damato’s performance is legend in Fort Myers. I swear, our patrons still bark at her to this day. It was after seeing the 2011 production that The Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout called Florida Rep ‘one of America’s top repertory companies,’ so it was a highlight for us both artistically and critically. We are very excited to bring this play back with the same director and two of the original stars!” Sylvia follows empty nesters Greg and Kate who find themselves at a crossroads – his career winding down and hers is ramping up. Now living in a Manhattan apartment, Kate thinks the dog phase of her life is over, but when Greg brings a street-smart labradoodle named Sylvia into their home, all bets are off. Love and laughter are unleashed as Sylvia quickly becomes a bone of contention, testing their marriage to hilarious and touching effect. Ensemble members Michelle Damato and Carrie Lund return to their roles in Sylvia and are joined by fellow ensemble member David Breitbarth and guest artist John Ottavino. Damato recently appeared in the one woman show, I Loved, I Lost, I Made

Director Maureen Heffernan is joined by an expert team of designers including ensemble set designer Ray Recht (The Cocktail Hour), costume designer Alexandria Vazquez (Doublewide), lighting designer Mike Wood (Florida Rep debut), sound designer John Kiselica (Outside Mullingar) and ensemble production stage manager Janine Wochna (To Kill a Mockingbird). New for the 2017-2018 season, weeknight performances in both performance venues (TuesdayThursday) begin at 7 p.m. Weekend evening performances remain at 8 and matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday are still set for the popular 2 p.m. curtain time. Laboratory Theater to perform Veronica’s Room Oct. 20 - Nov. 4
The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents Veronica’s Room by Ira Levin, opening Oct. 20 at 8 pm. This chilling mystery thriller by the author of Rosemary's Baby explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, madness and murder. Students Susan and Larry find themselves as guests enticed to the Brabissant mansion by its dissolute caretakers, the lonely Mackeys. Struck by Susan's strong resemblance to Veronica Brabissant, longdead daughter of the family for whom they work, the older couple gradually induces her to briefly impersonate Veronica to solace the only living Brabissant, her addled sister who believes Veronica alive. Once dressed in Veronica's clothes, Susan finds herself locked in the role and locked in Veronica's room. Or is she Veronica, in 1935, pretending to be an imaginary Susan? Veronica's Room is directed by Nykkie Rizley (Twelfth Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Bug). Veronica's Room runs from Oct. 20 to Nov. 4 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. Performance dates are as follows: Oct. 20, 21, 26, 27 an 28 and Nov. 2, 3

Naples Players present Maple & Vine at Sugden
The Naples Players present acclaimed playwright Jordan Harrison’s Maple & Vine Oct. 25 – Nov. 19. A young and successful, but stressed out New York couple, Katha (Tina Moroni) and Ryu (Dan Bacalzo), feel like prisoners in their perfectly imperfect 21st century lives. After they meet Dean (Jesse Hughes), a charismatic man from a community of 1950s re-enactors, they forsake cell phones and sushi for cigarettes and Tupperware parties and surprise themselves by what they are willing to sacrifice for happiness. Maple & Vine is written by Jordan Harrison whose play Marjorie Prime, was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, with a film adaptation, directed by Michael Almereyda, that premiered in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and is receiving critical praise as a sci-fi exploration of our inner lives. Maple and Vine premiered in the 2011 Humana Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville and went on to productions at American Conservatory Theatre and Playwrights Horizons. While you will be swept away by the nostalgic beauty of Maple & Vine’s 1950’s era costumes, Harrison never lets you forget that the grass is not always greener on the other side of that vintage Cadillac Eldorado. Ryu’s career as a plastic surgeon is replaced by a monotonous post war factory job and Katha’s world is no longer constricted by packed schedules but is instead confined to the home, where having dinner ready for her husband is the focus of her day. While the limitations imposed by 1950’s culture provide simplicity and order to this couple’s out of control life, humans are anything but simple and
divergence from the cultural norms of this group, including their interracial marriage, can prove as isolating as their fast-paced, overstructured lives. You may come see Maple & Vine for the Jell-o molds and martinis, but you will leave happy to know your iPhone is safely in hand. The Naples Players’ production of Maple & Vine opens Wednesday, Oct. 25 with a red carpet celebration including hors d’oeuvres by Sage Catering, beer tastings by Riptide and special entertainment. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the newly renovated Tobye Studio. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for subscribers and $10 for students and educators. For tickets and more information, visit www.naplesplayers.org or call (239) 2637990.

Admission includes garden viewing from 6 to 7 p.m. Building on the successes of last season, the company will engage seven professional artists in residence for the high season performances. “I have hired beautiful singing actors from top New York managements to perform a wide variety of events. The Phantom Gala is the title of this year’s signature fundraising event, Feb. 25. The evening begins with a 3 p.m. concert at the newly renovated Vanderbilt Presbyterian. Female version of The Odd Couple at Off Broadway Palm
Kelly Legarreta as Olive Madison, Melissa Whitworth as Vera, Shannon Connolly as Mickey, ML Graham as Renee, Dena Galyean as Sylvie and Katie Pankow as Florence Unger.
The Off Broadway Palm Theatre presents The Odd Couple: Female Version playing now through Oct. 29. In 1985, Neil Simon revised the original The Odd Couple for a female cast keeping the story line the same, but changing the leads to Florence Ungar and Olive Madison and adjusting scenes like the poker game to Trivial Pursuit and the Pigeon sisters to the Costazuela brothers. The men are out and the ladies are in. Neil Simon’s hilarious twist has taken the classic hit The Odd Couple and replaced the two male leads with females. The hilarity and story line remains the same as a neurotic, neat freak moves into the home of an uncouth and messy friend after a
marital split. Within days, their differing ways of life start taking their toll and the two are forced to agree that even the best of friends can make the worst of roommates. The Off Broadway Palm is an intimate 100-seat theatre, located in the main lobby of Broadway Palm. Performances are Wednesday through Sunday evenings with select matinees. Ticket prices range from $39 - $59 with group discounts available for parties of 20 or more. Tickets are on sale and can be reserved by calling (239) 278-4422, by visiting www.BroadwayPalm.com or by stopping by the box office at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.
Theatre Conspiracy at the Alliance for the Arts presents Buyer & Cellar by Jonathan Tolins, an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things and the oddest of odd jobs. Florida Rep’s education director, Kody C. Jones, stars in this one-man show and performs half a dozen characters. Buyer & Cellar runs Oct. 6 through Oct. 14. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays. Thursday and Friday performances are buy one, get one half off using promo code IRMA. The production runs 90 minutes. Buyer & Cellar is a hilarious fictional account of one
man's experience working in the basement shops of Barbra Streisand's home. Alex More, a struggling actor in L.A. takes a job working in the Malibu basement of the beloved megastar. One day, making a rare appearance, the Lady Herself comes downstairs to play. Inspired by Barbra Streisand’s My Passion for Design, Buyer & Cellar is part truth, part fiction. The facts? Streisand has a shopping mall in the basement of her Malibu home, featuring a doll shop, an antique clothing store and a sweets shop, complete with a frozen yogurt machine, as detailed in her 2010 book. Jonathan Tolins takes the wackiness a step further as he imagines a man who is hired to work in the basement of the mall…with Babs as his only customer. Grant Peeples kicks off busy month for ACMA •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The Americana Community Music Association (ACMA) has another active schedule of shows in October. Grant Peeples will perform Oct. 7, and locals Peg & Emory Williams will open. A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR, and Buddhist with a gun below the seat,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” as well as their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” He was a 2016 finalist in the prestigious New Folk Songwriters Showcase, sponsored by Kerrville Folk Festival. Grant has made seven studio records. Including a trilogy produced by Gurf Morlix. His newest record, “A Congress of Treasons,” was released in February, 2016 The ACMA welcomes Danika Holmes and Jeb Hart on Oct. 14. Scott Lee Dozier will open that night. Don’t let the optimistic take on life in Danika’s music fool you into thinking she’s never endured hardship. She has ... and plenty of it. She just chose to focus the message of her music on overcoming challenges and getting through life’s hardest moments in one piece, and being better for it. Danika believes music has the ability to heal. But that’s not all. A well written song and performance can lead you to sing along, to laugh, or to bop your head and groove with the beat. That’s what you can expect from a Danika Holmes show ... not just songs, but an experience to remember. In 2010, Danika joined forces with guitarist Jeb Hart, a phenomenal player who’s not afraid of shredding on an acoustic guitar. Jeb’s clean and sophisticated style of playing along with Danika’s smooth, soulful vocals has created their own unique blend of acoustic pop. Fans come to Danika shows expecting to hear Jeb Hart on guitar the same way they know they’re going to get Slash at a Guns N’ Roses concert. Jeb Hart is the creator of Six Month Guitar. Jeb Hart started playing music at age 9, starting with saxophone and then later adding guitar, bass, and drums. Throughout the years he has learned many more. In his college days he spent many hours in the studio writing and recording songs. Jeb also filled in with hundreds of bands including blues, rock, metal, country, and even a 2 1/2 year stint with a big band. He has taught for 16 years, and has decided to perform full time with Danika Holmes.

Hank Woji and Eileen Kozloff will perform Oct. 21, and local Bob Williams will open. The duo has performed regularly at festivals, concert venues, coffee houses and house concerts throughout the country combining their stellar individual skills into a duo that showcases the best of their talents into a seamless collaborative musical team. A self described “Jersey Shore Ex-Pat turned West Texas Desert Rat,” for over 20 years, as a bassist, Hank Woji played in some of The Garden State’s most dynamic and innovative bands, performing in clubs and concert halls from Virginia to Ontario, in styles ranging from blues and R&B to reggae and rock & roll to county rock and Afrobeat. In the spring of 2001, Hank moved to Houston, Texas, fell in with a bunch of great Texas songwriters, picked up his acoustic guitar, and found a new musical voice as a Singer Songwriter. But destiny turned a page and it was his chance move, in 2009, to the far West Texas desert town of Terlingua that has most reshaped his life and his music. Hank has released five self produced CDs: Medallion 2005; American Dreams 2008; There Was A Time 2010; Holy Ghost Town 2013; and The Working Life 2014. He has also just produced, Just Words, the new CD by Florida based
singer songwriter Eileen Kozloff, in 2017 An award winning artist, for her singing, songwriting and instrumental work, Eileen Kozloff is a multi-instrumentalist who has been actively involved in the autoharp world for over a quarter of a century. She is best known for her unique "pick-less" style of diatonic autoharp and for her soaring vocals, stunning harmonies and commanding performances. Her ability to compose, play and sing in a wide range of genres has made her a versatile festival performer and workshop teacher. Her extensive repertoire is a rich mix of old time chestnuts, Carter Family songs and her original compositions, which stylistically run the gamut from country, blues and folk to jazz and even
rock and roll. The ACMA welcomes David Massengill on Oct. 28. Local songwriter Joe Virga opens that night. Storyteller, songwriter and picture-book maker, David Massengill "emigrated" from Tennessee to the Greenwich Village folk scene in 1976 with a dulcimer and a dream of bohemian nirvana. His songwriting style ranges from tragic mountain ballads to the lure of tender love songs and iconic political narratives. His songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, David Bromberg, Chad Mitchell, The Roches, Lucy Kaplansky, Tom Russell, Nanci Griffith and his mentor, Dave Van Ronk, who once said David "took the dull out of dulcimer." Credits include six CDs, 11 bootlegs, 15 books, movie score, school programs. In 2016 the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill offered to archive his works. He accepted and joins his friends and heroes Dave Van Ronk, Bill Morrissey and Mike Seeger as a member. He once chased a bobcat and visa versa. The ACMA is a non-sectarian, not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all shows start at 7 p.m. For more info, visit www.americanacma.org.
SW Florida Symphony tribute to The Beatles Oct. 21
Classical Mystery Tour
16
OCTOBER 2017
The Southwest Florida Symphony opens its 57th season with the uncanny likenesses of John, Paul, George, Ringo and original Nir Kabaretti with The Beatles tribute, Classical Mystery Tour. Classical Mystery Tour performs live with the Southwest Florida Symphony on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour bring a quintessential performance of The Beatles’ music with Classical Mystery Tour; a show that features more than twodozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded. This concert pays homage to early Beatles hits that skyrocketed the band to fame all the way through Sgt. Pepper, in honor of that album’s 50th anniversary. Hear "Penny Lane" with a glittering live trumpet section, experience the
raw emotion of "Yesterday" with acoustic guitar and string quartet, encounter the original classical/rock mashup concept with the rock band and orchestral blend on "I Am the Walrus," and relish the cascading crescendos on “A Day in the Life.” Adding to the thrill of this performance is the rare and wonderful presence of Maestro Nir Kabaretti on the podium, leading the Southwest Florida Symphony in a Pops performance. Though the Southwest Florida Symphony’s music director and conductor has spent his career leading classical and operatic performances around the world and has cultivated a significant following for his expressive style here in Lee County, he is a die-hard Beatles fan who expressed unbridled excitement at the prospect of conducting Classical Mystery Tour. “When we pitched the possibility of a Beatles tribute
performance this season, Nir was ecstatic,” said Amy Ginsburg, the Southwest Florida Symphony’s executive director. “He wanted to make absolutely sure that he would be the one conducting the orchestra for this show. It will be so much fun to watch him lead the symphony in a classic rock show.” Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall is located at 13350 FSW Parkway in Fort Myers. Tickets cost between $29 and $89 per person and are available by calling the Southwest Florida Symphony box office at 239-418-1500, by visiting the Southwest Florida Symphony Box Office located at 8290 College Parkway, Suite 103, in Fort Myers, by calling the Barbara B. The board of directors of the not for profit Young Artists Awards program would like to express its appreciation to all of those in the community who have supported its mission. After 14 years serving thousands of students in the performing arts in the area, it has become increasingly difficult to raise the money to run the program effectively. As the Young Artists Awards has grown to include more students wanting to participate, the costs in terms of running the organization have risen dramatically. The majority of the time spent was on fundraising instead of serving children in the arts. This was not a decision that was come to lightly. The board had numerous discussions about merging
with other organizations, cutting back on programming and various other options. However, by majority consensus it was felt that is was time to shut the doors while keeping the integrity of the program intact. The remaining dollars the organization has will be used for a final round of scholarships. The not for profit Young Artists Awards, the area’s largest program for students in the performing arts, is pleased to announce a new written scholarship opportunity open to prior finalists of the program. Visit the scholarship page on the website www.youngartistsawards.org for more information and the application or email info@youngartistsawards.org. The deadline to apply is Oct. 27.

FROM THE ROAD - STORIES & SONGS
Acoustic series debuts Dec. 3 with Rhonda & Wayne Nelson and other members of the Little River Band
The owners of Happenings Magazine have created a new event called From the Road - Stories and Songs. The magazine will present a series of intimate and interactive events around Southwest Florida with national artists who will share their stories in an acoustic and intimate venue. The inaugural From the Road event will be on Sunday, Dec. 3 at The Barrel Room in downtown Fort Myers. The first guests will be author Rhonda Nelson and her husband, Wayne, of Little River Band. They will be joined by Greg Hind and Chris Marion, also members of Little River Band. Rhonda has written a book about life on the road with her rock star husband. What’s it like to grow up as a small town Southern girl and marry a rock star, and then discover you’ll have to share the love of your life with the band and thousands of their fans? That’s what happened to Rhonda Nelson, whose husband Wayne Nelson is the lead singer and bass player for Little River Band. Since 2000, Rhonda and Wayne have traveled across the United States together, sharing a love of classic rock, seeking out their favorite wineries and socializing with new and old friends alike. In her book A Different Life, Rhonda pulls back the curtain on celebrity life while offering readers a chance to hear stories, enjoy treasured family recipes and photos and experience all things pertaining to life on the road. Formed in 1975, Little River Band has sold more than 30 million records and had many hits like “Help is On the Way,” “Cool Change,” “Reminiscing,” “Lonesome Loser” and others. On Dec. 3, Rhonda and Wayne will share stories and the members of Little River Band will play some acoustic music. That will be followed by a meet and greet with photos and autographs.

Deuterman Productions in association with Ineffable Music Group present Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime, on Thursday, Nov. 2. The phenomenon known as Sublime, arguably the most energetic, original and uniquely eclectic band to emerge from any scene, anywhere, ended with the untimely death of lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Brad Nowell in May of 1996. But encompassing the sense of place and purpose long associated with Sublime’s music, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime continues to channel the spirit of Sublime with a fury not felt for some time. Shaggy What separates Badfish from other tribute bands is that they have replicated Sublime’s essence, developing a scene and dedicated following most commonly reserved for label-driven, mainstream acts. Shaggy followed up with his sophomore album “Boombastic” in 1995. “Boombastic” went certified platinum, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Reggae Album and topped an impressive chart list that included the Top 40 Rhythmic charts, Hot 100, Billboard 200, among others. SoCo Second Saturday celebrates one year
DAAS Co-Op Gallery will feature art of Ric Moreira
In the month of October, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is celebrating the SoCo Second Saturday Event’s first anniversary with an opening reception for guest artist Ric Moreira. The opening night for the exhibition, entitled dis·in·te·gra·tion, coincides with the monthly event, held at the SoCo Cultural District (Alliance for the Arts and Royal Palm Square block) on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. Moreira is a resident of nearby Saint Petersburg and originally from the Autonomous Region of Azores, Portugal. “My abstract paintings are the result of deep inner feelings interacting with the materials I'm using and the environment I'm in. I am in a constant dialogue with my work, allowing my emotions and insecurities to manipulate how the painting develops,” states Moreira, who uses a variety of mediums to create his two-dimensional compositions. “I often feel like I keep a visual diary. I can look at my previous works and be reminded of where I was emotionally. In that sense, the work is deeply personal. I hope my work stands to alter or expand the viewer's conception of its meaning,” adds Moreira. Moreira’s exhibition marks the seventeenth month of the gallery’s inception. “I am humbled and amazed and how much we have accomplished and the support we have received from the great people of southwest Florida.” – says co-owner and
artist Xavier Brignoni. “This gallery goes beyond its walls when it comes to promoting, sponsoring and sharing the art from this corner of Florida with the world.” – concludes Brignoni. During the presentation of dis·in·te·gra·tion, Moreira will propose a refocus on the textural background, in contrasting with color. Layer upon layer, he seeks to reflect his life experiences and personal struggles, pictorially. “These new paintings deal with my fascination of how everything starts to fall apart as soon as it is created.” – concludes the artist. For more information about the gallery, visit daascoop.com or call 239-590-8645. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery is located in the Royal Palm Square at 1400 Colonial Blvd., suite 84, in Fort Myers. Judi Fuchs, Francine Gerson at Harbour View Gallery
Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral will welcome featured artists Judi Fuchs (photography) and Francine Gerson (fused glass) at a reception on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. Judi Fuchs hails from New York and is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts with a degree in cartooning. She began her career in photography at Norcross Greeting Cards and while teaching special education, continued to pursue photography as a hobby.
Francine Gerson has tried to allow her world travels to stimulate her glass pieces. She visualizes how a finished piece will look with the light from the front and from behind. She starts by placing pieces of iridescent or colored glass on a base backing. Then she adds glass from the same color family or contrasting glass. Their work will be on display through October. Multiple exhibits on display at Naples Art Association
The Naples Art Association has several exhibits in October. The current ARTScool 2017 exhibition continues through Oct. 26 The 2017 ARTScool Exhibition features 52 newly created works in clay, drawing, fiber, mixed media, painting and printmaking by young art students who participated in the Naples Art Association’s 19th annual summer art program. The ARTScool 2017 exhibition is on view in Gallery 104. A Splash of Blue will be on display at the Naples Art Association from Oct. 10 through Nov. 2. Blue is the color of the sky and water. It so dominates our world that the earth is called “The Blue Planet.” Blue is perceived as a calm color and has many other associations including confidence and reliability. In this exhibition all artwork has at least a splash of blue. Artists are invited to deliver artwork on Oct. 2 for the jury process. This exhibition program is administered by the Naples Art Association’s Gallery 104 volunteers. The exhibition will be on view in the Elizabeth & William Barrick, Millicent & Charles Marshall and the Minnesota Lobby Galleries. The It’s Elemental exhibit will run Oct. 16 – 28. Experience the seven Elements of Art through vision, hearing and touch. The Elements of Art are building blocks artists use to create works of art. Like a poet combining words and composing a poem, a visual artist employs the Elements of Art when painting a picture, constructing a sculpture or assembling a collage. The Elements of Art are a visual vocabulary artists manipulate to express themselves and make meaningful connections to the world around them. The seven Elements of Art are line, value, shape, form, space, color and texture. Each element is presented in the exhibition with an original work of visual/touch art and an original musical composition recorded for replay by gallery visitors. It’s Elemental features the collaborative
work of husband and wife artists Genie Kell and Nando Ortegón with interpretive musical compositions written and performed by Jeff Leigh. Leigh has written eight original compositions for the exhibition, one for each of the seven elements with his eighth work aurally interpreting a large work by Kell and Ortegón which features all seven elements of art. The exhibition also features newly created artwork by blind and visually impaired participants in Lighthouse of Collier programs. Lighthouse of Collier, Inc., offers programs/services, at no charge, to help the blind and visually impaired become independent in Collier County. Lighthouse of Collier promotes the development, implementation and on-going evaluation of programs and services which foster independence and enhance the quality of life for the blind, visually impaired and their caregivers. Musician, teacher and composer Jeff Leigh will premiere his original musical compositions interpreting the seven elements of art and the work of Genie Kell and Nando Ortegón at the Naples Art Association on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. This will be the second time Jeff Leigh has performed live at the Naples Art Association. The performance is free to Naples Art Association donors with a $10 suggested donation for the public. A reception for three exhibitions will be held Friday, Oct. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Galleries are open with free admission during published exhibition dates. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. There is a $10 suggested donation when attending the reception (free for Naples Art Association contributors). Fluxus Music show continues at Bob Rauschenberg Gallery through Nov. 11
Florida SouthWestern State College announces the FluZUsic/Fluxus Music at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery. An interactive and immersive installation with newly commissioned works by Yoko Ono, Geoffrey Hendricks, Alison Knowles and Philip Corner (who also provided the exhibition’s playful title), FluZUsic/Fluxus Music provides both an indepth historical examination into this seminal art movement and a hands-on/participatory and sonic experience for visitors. Most heavily inspired by the ideas of John Cage, Fluxus art often relied on chance to shape the outcome and actively involved the viewer. Fluxus compositions or scores for performances and events involved simple actions, ideas and objects from everyday life. Incorporating concrete poetry, visual art and writing, Fluxus performances were the embodiment of Dick Higgins’ idea of “intermedia”—a dialogue between two or more media to create a third, entirely new art form. Yet, as many of the Fluxus artists had formal training in music, musical composition and performance (frequently involving the alteration, misuse or
36
OCTOBER 2017
abuse of traditional instruments), this activity became a central focus. Beginning with a series of festivals featuring concerts of experimental music and other avant-garde performance, Fluxus artists reacted against the commodification of art, its commercialization in the gallery system, and its static presentation in museums. While Bob Rauschenberg famously stated his interest in working “in the gap between art and life,” the primary goal of most Fluxus artists was to destroy any boundary between the two. Founder George Maciunas stated that Fluxus was "anti-art," to underscore the revolutionary mode of thinking about the practice and process of art while using humor to mock the elitist world of "high art" and to bring art to the widest possible audience. The exhibit runs now through Nov. 11. The Bob Rauschenberg Gallery is located at Florida SouthWestern State College, 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers. With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat. This is True Texas Barbeque. They smoke meats a minimum of 1214 hours creating mouth-watering, fall off the bone goodness for Baby Back and St. Louis Style Ribs and succulent brisket, pork and tenderloin. All meats are hand sliced to order ensuring the freshest and tastiest “Q” in town allowing it to be consistently voted as the Best Barbeque in Southwest Florida. 4519 Tamiami Trail E., Naples 239-732-8392 www.texastonys.com
