Art Walk turns 10

Believe it or not, but a small group of us started Fort Myers Art Walk 10 years ago this month. Art Walk is the only monthly event in the River District that has lasted this long and has never been canceled. It has been a major catalyst for economic revitalization of the downtown, and we are all thankful for the support of the art enthusiasts and the thousands of people who patronize the downtown establishments. I am humbled, proud and honored to be among that small group of folks who had a vision and carried it through to make Art Walk a reality. A special shout out to our original leader Greg Knezevich and my fellow long-time cochairs Andy Howl and Claudia Goode. Rock on,

LABORATORY THEATER OF FLORIDA

Hand to God opens Oct. 19 Keeping up with the tradition of providing fresh new experiences for Southwest Florida, The Laboratory Theater of Florida announces the Southwest Florida premiere of Hand to God by Robert Askins. Admit it ... you've had certain ... impulses, right? Ones you've thought about, but would never actually say out loud or act upon? It's human nature. And that darkest human nature is exposed when a Texas church youth-group assignment to create original hand puppets goes strangely awry. Cypress, Texas, is a small, conservative, and extremely devout town. Margery is a recent widow who needs something to occupy her time so the local pastor has asked her to run the church puppet club, whose members include her son Jason; his next-door neighbor Jessica (that Jason has a crush on); and Timmy, the neighborhood troublemaker whose mother attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at the church. The puppet club has been asked to put on a performance at the church next Sunday at the request of Pastor Greg. Jason's hand puppet, Tyrone, takes on a life of his own, announces that he is Satan, leads them into sin, and expresses secrets that the characters would rather have left unacknowledged. Hand to God plays from Oct. 18 to Nov. 4 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida.

10 - October 2018

Director Nykkie Rizley says “At its heart, Hand to God is about our search for answers, connections, and comforts. Yes, it is raw and raunchy, it is foul and sexy, it is violent and it is hilarious. All of this rolled into one. But, it is also soft and gentle and poignant. It slaps me in the face with humor and then pulls at my heartstrings. It is really quite an experience.” Actor Steven Coe, who is playing Jason, adds, "It's a very irreverent show, with a scarred, earnest heart. It's very personal and raw, which you'll forget in its loud moments of fire and ridiculous humor, which was artfully and intentionally written. It's technically impressive, it's hardcore, it's a great show to work on and hopefully to watch." It was the Best New Play winner in 2014, Off-Broadway Alliance. This show does feature mature themes, sexual situations and some profanity. Performance dates are Oct. 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, Nov. 1, 2, 3 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 3 and 4 at 2 p.m. Half-price preview night is Oct. 18. Pizza and a free show for teenagers on Oct. 20 begins at 6:30 p.m., and reservations are required. A community talk back, post-performance, “Demonic Possession, Fact or Fiction?” will take place Oct. 25. Tickets are available to purchase on www.Brownpapertickets.com or by calling the box office at 239-218-0481. For additional savings, guests may purchase a 2018-2019 season pass. For more info, visit www.LaboratoryTheaterFlorida.com or the physical location at 1634 Woodford Ave. in the Fort Myers River District. Happenings Magazine

Becoming Dr. Ruth

Florida Repertory Theatre kicked off its 2018-2019 season with Becoming Dr. Ruth, a moving and hilarious new comedy. It plays now through Oct. 21 in the ArtStage Studio Theatre. The one-woman comedy about Dr. Ruth’s harrowing life story opened the theatre's 21st season, featuring a powerhouse nine-show lineup in the theatre's two venues. "We are delighted to be celebrating our third decade with this diverse section of plays and musicals," said interim artistic director Jason Parrish. "Dr. Ruth’s unbelievable life story is a profile in courage, and we are so pleased welcome Chris Clavelli back to direct the production with Susan Greenhill, a veteran of the regional stage, in the title role. This play is moving, incredibly funny, and a fascinating look at a life well-lived, and full of Dr. Ruth’s signature personality and charm. It is not to be missed.” Becoming Dr. Ruth by Mark St. Germain is harrowing true story of how a little girl fled the Nazis to become one of the most empowering voices of the 20th century. Greenhill is no stranger to the role, having appeared as Dr. Ruth at Studio Theatre in Sarasota and at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Clavelli returns to direct the production after his work on last year's season opener, Outside Mullingar and a recent production at Sarasota's newest professional company, Dog Days Theatre. Clavelli leads set designer Bert Scott (Over the River and Through the Woods), costume designer Jacqueline Loy (Florida Rep debut), lighting and projection designer Rob Siler (Disgraced), sound designer Katie Lowe and ensemble stage manager Amy Massari 16 - October 2018

Co-Co Art Gallery celebrating new name with season reception Oct. 4 ART

With the launch of in-season arts activities and events, the Art Council of Southwest Florida has adopted a new name for the gallery that it operates at the Coconut Point Mall in Estero. The Co-operative Art Gallery is now the Co-Co Art Gallery, suggesting its presence in the mall (located next to Panera). “Our artists volunteers felt that the wording of the new name could better inform residents of our location,” said Judi Fuchs, director of the gallery. “The gallery has been at this prestigious location for the past eight years,” she said, “offering an exciting wealth of art, from jewelry, ceramics and photography to painting and works in mixed media -- but many have not known where to find us.” The Co-Co Art Gallery will be celebrating the new name at its first in-season reception on Oct. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m., as usual featuring live music and complimentary wine and hors d’oevres. Held through next April, each reception follows the monthly changes in artwork at the gallery, giving mall visitors and customers an opportunity to view the new offerings and meet some of the artists. The gallery has a full slate of additional arts activities during October. Art Quilters Unlimited

will be exhibiting at the gallery the fiber art of its members Oct. 2 - 19. The gallery will showcase “featured artists” Joe Holtzman (photographer) Oct. 6 and 7 and Janet Sams (glass artist) Oct. 20 and 21. On Oct. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m., Wanda Kemper will continue her series of monthly critiques, with the topic “Creating Interest” in a painting. Her critiques are open to all at no charge, and artists are invited to bring their work for her comment. Co-Co Gallery artists are members of the studios of the Art Council’s 21 organizations in a five-county area (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee), showcasing the range of Southwest Florida creativity in the visual arts.

Naples Depot Museum: The Budd Tavern Car Story

The Naples Depot Museum presents “End of the Line: The Budd Tavern Car Story” curated by Collier County Museums staff. The exhibition will be on display Oct. 3 to Dec. 15 at the Naples Depot Museum, 1051 5th Avenue South, Naples. A free opening reception sponsored by the Friends of the Collier County Museums will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 and is open to the public. Since its arrival to the historic Naples Depot property in 1978, the Budd Tavern Observation Car has fascinated both locals and the thousands of visitors who travel to SW Florida every year. Originally built for the Seaboard Airline Railroad (SAL) in 1947, by the Edward G. Budd Manufacturing Co., this observation car #6601 was one of six built for 24 - October 2018

SAL that year. Through its long service history in the SAL to its final journeys on Amtrak, this symbol of American ingenuity has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles across the United States. After its retirement, it began a new life as an attraction to the newly opened Naples Depot Cultural Center in 1978. For nearly two decades, the Budd Car offered Naples Depot visitors a unique glimpse into the glory days of the railroads, but as the years wore on, the car began to show its age and the effects of the harsh SW Florida weather. In 2015, the car began an extensive three-year restoration that would stabilize the car and bring it back to its 1947 roots. to Naples Art Association

While wearable art shows are hosted all over the country, just last year there had never been one in Naples. The Naples Art Association changed that with the creation of the inaugural Scene to be Seen event which highlighted the glamour and sophistication of fine art through high fashion. This event has become one of the season’s most sought after events. Before the fully-staged runway show which will showcase more than 25 local and international artists’ work, guests will enjoy a dynamic welcome reception complete with delicious hors d'oeuvres and signature cocktails all in an immersive atmosphere allowing the opportunity to socialize and experience the artists’ process and work first-hand. After the show, artists from Los Angeles, New York, Philippines, and Italy as well as here in SW Florida will have their work on display and available for purchase. And, the night wouldn’t be complete without a fabulous after-party with music and a full cash bar. And, it’s not only the artists who enjoy the experience of Happenings Magazine

showcasing their work to an audience of art lovers. The models do too. “Modeling for Scene to Be Seen last year was so much fun! I am brand new to modeling, but it’s a big dream of mine to be able to grow my career,” said Kaia Geissinger. “The Scene to be Seen show not only gave me valuable experience, but also connected me with other models and artists that I am still friends with today. The artist that I partnered with has even had me model for her in other shows around the state of Florida. This show is unique because we get to model pieces of art. It felt like we were modeling in Miami or New York.” And, Scene to be Seen is an important fundraising tool for the NAA. It raises funds for outreach programs for deserving students at area nonprofits. Scene to be Seen: An Art Runway Show will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the NAA. Tickets are $200 per VIP ticket or $100 for general admission ticket. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.naplesart.org/scenetobeseen/ or by calling 239-262-6517. October 2018 - 25

The Naples Art Association will host the Morris Herstein: A Fusion of Fotos exhibition from Sept. 26 through Nov. 3. After a successful career as a scientist and product developer with cosmetic giants Revlon and Estee Lauder, Herstein transferred his knowledge of color technology into the art of photography. I never prepare for a photo shoot, I just go and look for what inspires me and works visually, sim-

ple flowers can be created into works of art with emotional appeal.” A special reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for this exhibition and the Feel the Art exhibition, which will be on view from Oct. 1 through Oct. 27, and the Celebrating the Light exhibition, which will be on view Oct. 31 through Dec. 1. FGCU: David Shepard & Megan Kissinger

An art exhibition focusing on two FGCU alumni is opening in the ArtLab Gallery at Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday, Oct. 4 beginning at 5 p.m. FGCU alumni Megan Kissinger (Fort Myers), class of 2004, and David Shepard (Honolulu), class of 2013, are engaging art’s historic role in raising public awareness about threatened habitats and species in their own tropical environments. Through an aesthetically broad and creative process, they are reconnecting people to the rich tapestry of life. Both artists and conservationists, Kissinger and Shepard bring together an exhibition of nature art aimed at raising awareness, inspiring, and motivating viewers to appreciate and protect the natural world. Megan Kissinger works as a museum conservator and exhibit designer for Edison & Ford Winter Estates. In her work as a museum conservator, Kissinger is aware of the damages of time to both the natural world and the manufactured. In her paintings, Kissinger depicts the art of southern North America in all its wild glory in order to show viewers the beautiful natural world that is disappearing before their very eyes. In this way, she is pondering nature as a relic. “When it is all over, this grand party we are enjoying called modern life, who will pick up the pieces? Who will make right what has been overturned? Who will be the responsible one and mop up the spills?” says Megan Kissinger. Growing up in rural Southwest Florida, David Shepard developed a deep love of the environment, plants, and how they intersect culturally and historically. He moved to Hawaii David Shepard 28 - October 2018

after graduating and at the University of Hawaii at Manoa he completed a master’s degree in tropical plant and soil sciences. While interning for the National Park Service on a remote Hawaiian island he was troubled by both the intense threats to the stunningly beautiful native Hawaiian plants and landscape he was working to protect. While teaching English in Southeast Asia, David was inspired by the print styles and patterns that he encountered, including batik shirts. In Myanmar, he had his first dress shirt made using local patterns. Returning to Hawaii, he was further inspired Megan Kissinger by the success of Hawaiian shirts, known locally as aloha shirts. He decided to create a dress shirt line called ‘Aloha, David’ that showcases native Hawaiian plants. He taught himself how to use Adobe Illustrator to make continuous print patterns and took up sewing classes until he was able to make his first aloha shirt. The exhibit will run through Nov. 8 at the ArtLab Gallery (Library, West), Florida Gulf Coast University, 10501 FGCU Blvd. S, Fort Myers.

celebrates the strange and spooky at Davis Art Center

The second annual Dark Art exhibition presented by the Syzygy Collaborative Art Project will take place in October at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers. The works selected, primarily from local artists, explore the creepy and macabre in art – and celebrate the freedom for artists to pursue the entire spectrum in thematic art. This juried collection of artwork will be displayed in the Grand Atrium. The opening reception takes place on Friday, Oct. 5 during Art Walk’s 10-year celebration. Beginning at 6 p.m., Wicked Apple Art will be demonstrating a live body paint session on the main stage, while local artists Dharma LeFevre and Cloud Kent will be painting live around the main gallery. There will also be tarot readings by Shelby Elmore, a fire spinning performance by Fiero outside on the gallery steps,

(Costumes may not include weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for real weapons.) Dark Art 2018 is presented by Syzygy Collaborative Art Project, better known as the artist duo Danielle Branchaud and Nick Masiello. To learn more about Syzygy, visit www.syzygyart.wordpress.com. The program includes sections “…Sang to God” with samplings from the old masters including Bach, Mozart, and Mendelssohn -- “…Sang on the Opera Stage” with opera choruses, through captivating arrangements of the romantic spirit - “…Sang of Love” with inspirational texts by more recent composers, and ending with “…Sang for Joy” featuring various choral genres including spirituals and gospel. ACMA welcomes Twin Kennedy, Rebecca Folsom & Nate Currin

The Americana Community Music Association is not holding anything back for season. They have a strong October lined for anyone that wants to hear excellent Americana original music, in a relaxing setting. The ACMA is happy to welcome back Twin Kennedy on Oct. 6. Their musical bond is as strong as their small town roots – Twin Kennedy, comprised of West Coast sisters Carli and Julie Kennedy, have been making music together since they could talk. Born and raised in the small town of Powell River, BC, Twin Kennedy grew up perfecting their sibling harmonies and dynamic live performances, while making their name known throughout their small community as a family band. Growing up in such a musically infused family, it is no wonder that these sisters crafted their sound through a unique fusion of their background in country, folk, jazz and classical music. With years of classical training, including their Bachelors Degrees in Music Performance from the University of Victoria, the sisters have found their home in country music. With Carli on vocals and guitar, and Julie on vocals and violin, these petite powerhouses will fill your soul with joy and warmth through their seamless harmonies and heartfelt songwriting. No bond compares to that of sisters, and the same is to be said about the blend of their kindred voices. Opening for Twin Kennedy is ACMA’s own Gene Martin. Gene Martin, aka Smokey Daytona, grew up in Maine, though at age 80, he still wonders if he is grown up yet. He left home as a teenager to get an education, spent a year as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam, and settled down to practice radiology in upstate New York. He and his wife, Nancy, moved to Florida in 2003 to retire, but he kept working for eight more years. Folk music has always been his passion since he started singing and playing Oh Susanna, and Camp Town Races with his little sister, using her plastic ukulele when he was 16. He took up the banjo, and finally the guitar which has been his constant companion ever since, and he has sung in choruses, glee clubs, and church choirs since childhood. Homegrown J Robert, Marie Nofsinger and Ricky Baker Cegelis will perform Oct. 13. The ACMA is excited to bring together three excellent songwriters on the local stage. J Robert is a Florida-born entertainer who lives year-round on Marco Island, performing hundreds of events in SW Florida annually. Visitors to Florida are entertained by J Robert’s signature sounds of SW Florida …blending violin, steel drums and guitar into Happenings Magazine

Rebecca Folsom every song. Award winning songwriter, national touring performer and recording artist Marie Nofsinger will take you on a journey into the soul of America. Tales of outlaws, anarchists, the common working man, Jesus and broken hearts fill her original repertoire. Lilting melodies, swamp stomp rhythms, as well as jazzy swing tunes carry the lyrics into your memory. Ricky Baker Cegelis started playing guitar when he was 45. He’s obviously a fast learner. Ricky plays locally with 4 Man Trio, and RPM. His songs emerge from personal experience and whimsy. ACMA members will perform Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Family Fun Day at Ding Darling Days on Sanibel. The Pearl Street Band - Bob Williams, Mike McMillan & Bill Veach will play 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. David Hintz, Alan Bradford, & Ross Jordan will play from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. Nate Currin returns to the Fort Myers ACMA stage on Oct. 20. Over the last five years, Nate Currin has won five International Music Awards, including Songwriter of the Year twice and been nominated for Indie Music Awards as well as a Georgia Music Award. In addition to that, several of Nate's albums have reached the top 20 iTunes Charts including his most recent release The Madman and the Poet. Currently Nate is

preparing to release his fifth full-length studio album in the last eight years as he continues to tour the country with his dog, Max. Carolyn & David Stanley will open for Nate Currin. They have been playing various genres of music solo and in bands since they were teenagers. As a duo in Fort Myers their performances feature David’s original music with David on vocals, guitar and harmonica and Carolyn on vocals, guitar, banjo and charango. Rebecca Folsom returns to the local ACMA stage on Oct. 27. Rebecca Folsom’s music is about liberation. Her songs crack open hearts, inspire hope, and leave listeners with a deeper perspective. Rebecca’s world-class voice traverses a near-four-octave range. KUNC radio describes it as “knock-you-to-yourknees.” While her range is impressive, it’s the expression in her voice that rivets your attention and stays with you long after the show ends. Rebecca’s voice pours from an inner source of honest emotion, flowing from lilting tenderness to fully liberated, unbridled release. Her poetic songs open your heart, setting free a vulnerability you didn’t realize was locked away and inviting you to embrace life with all of its joy, sorrow, passion, and love. She brings both a pure vocal quality reminiscent of old Appalachia and a blues prowess. Ray Cerbone (with Nancy Koerner) will open the Oct. 27 show. One of the founding members of the Fort Myer’s ACMA, Ray began playing guitar during the early ‘70s folk scene. With the support and inspiration of fellow local and touring musicians, he began writing and playing in earnest in 2010. Traveling a long road in a short time, his music encompasses many genres, including Americana, Folk, Blues, Ballads, and a little bit of country. Nancy Koerner is an accomplished professional harmony vocalist, veteran performer, and recording artist. Singer songwriters circle is held every Sunday 2 - 5 p.m. at All Faiths Unitarian Congregation at 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The circle is for acoustic songwriters of all levels. Songs and experiences are shared in a non-judgmental, casual atmosphere. All shows are in a quiet, intimate setting and every show is a meet and greet with the artists. YouTube any of these artists and be prepared to be impressed by the talent that is available to you all year round for a cost of $10-$15 donation. The ACMA is a non-sectarian not for profit organization. Most concerts are held at All Faiths Congregation located at 2756 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all shows start at 7 pm. For more information visit www.americanacma.org October 2018 - 47

Tea with the Mastersingers Nov. 4 The Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers begin their 18th season in November with a fundraising event on one weekend and an innovative concert on the next. The group will hold a fundraising high tea service, Tea with the Mastersingers, on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the lovely White Orchid at Oasis, 3027 East Riverside Drive, Fort Myers. The season’s first concert, an innovative program called Shall We Dance, featuring the Mastersingers Chamber Chorus and dancers from the M & N Studio in Fort Myers, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Sanibel Community Church, 1740 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Tea with the Mastersingers kicks off at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 and will be the second annual fundraiser the Mastersingers have held at the unique riverside venue that is the White Orchid. Meteorologist Jason Dunning of NBC-2 morning news will again emcee the event that features sweet and savory high tea fare provided by noted area caterer, Jamie and Jacob. Entertainment for the after48 - October 2018

noon will be provided by the 2018 winners of the Ruth DeMaster Vocal Scholarship competition that the Mastersingers hold each April. Tickets for the event are $60 and can be purchased on the Mastersingers website at www.mastersingersfm.com. “The singers in this group feel like we’re part of a big family,” said Mastersingers president Anthony Contino. He continues, “It just doesn’t get any better than spending a Sunday afternoon in a vintage Fort Myers home like the White Orchid with friends, while enjoying incredible food and listening to some of the best young voices in the area. Add to that, we’re raising money to help fund the choral arts in Southwest Florida, and it’s a win-win situation.” Shall We Dance is a concert that veers off the Mastersingers usual programming path. The afternoon will feature the Mastersingers Chamber Chorus singing selections from Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, Broadway show tunes, and other choral pieces with a dance theme. Joining them will be dancers from the M & N Dance

Studio, 12450 Metro Pkwy, Fort Myers, going through their paces in dances like the tango and the waltz. All of this will be accompanied by two of the finest pianists in the area, longtime Mastersingers accompanist Janet Carter and Judy Richey. The program will be held at one of the Mastersingers favorite venues, Sanibel Community Church. The concert is free, and a goodwill offering will be taken up. Mastersingers artistic director Jeff Faux says, “All art forms are an attempt to communicate something meaningful, but choral music and dance are unique in that these forms of expression use only the human body to communicate. This concert will combine these two art forms in a unique and fascinating way that will be inspiring and entertaining to audiences.” The 18th Mastersingers season has many more concerts planned through spring of 2019 culminating with a performance of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. Quilt show Oct. 13 at Edison & Ford Estates

THIRD FRIDAY EVERY MONTH The next Music Walk will be

Friday, Oct. 19 LIVE MUSIC STARTS AT 6 PM

62 - October 2018

Edison & Ford Winter Estates will host the annual "Airing of the Quilts" quilt show Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dozens of quilts from the Quilters' Guild will be on display, suspended from clotheslines between trees and select antique quilts from the 1880s to 1940s will be on display inside the Thomas Edison house, Henry Ford house and the Edison guest house. Quilters' Guild participants will also have quilts available for sale. Certified quilt appraiser Lars Cain will be on site and conducting appraisals from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. His vast experience includes the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. He has been sharing his expertise for many years and has spoken to more than 1,500 quilt groups throughout the Midwest, New England area and south to Florida. Since 1977, he has appraised more than 20,000 quilts. Visitors may bring antique quilts for assessment. Verbal appraisals will be offered for $20, and the fee for a writ-

ten appraisal is $50 per quilt. Quilts have a long history with the estates. Henry Ford and his wife, Clara, collected quilts and other historical objects that were created and used by people from all across the United States. The quilts were often made from modest scraps of material, demonstrating the resourcefulness of American women. The quilt show is included with a self-guided or guided tour of the historic home site and botanic gardens. Tickets may be purchased online or at the ticket counter. Admission is free for Edison Ford members. For more information, call 239-334-7419 or visit online at www.edisonfordwinterestates.org. Happenings Magazine

Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse

With a goal of bringing a first-class experience and barbeque product Texas Tony’s Rib and Brew House was born. Tony Phelan grew up in Texas, took those roots and his love of Texas barbeque and set out on a plan of introducing a unique brand of barbeque to Southwest Florida. Taking a combination of Hickory and Oak woods to smoke with and cooking at low temperatures, it created the perfect formula for Award-Winning Barbeque. Texas Tony’s barbeque is “all about the rub and the ring.” The rub is made from his secret recipe. The ring occurs when you smoke meat over a long period of time; the pink is where the smoke has permeated the meat.

Caribbean dancers prance down Duval Street to end the Fantasy Fest Parade Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017. Photo by Andy Newman/Florida Keys News

Fantasy Fest Oct. 19-28 Revelers can expect a “monopoly” on high-energy fun Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 28 as Key West’s annual Fantasy Fest puts a playful spin on masking and costuming festivities. The 2018 festival is themed “Oh … The Games We Play!” and features 10 days of masquerade balls, elaborate costume contests, parties and fanciful frolics, all climaxing in a grand parade set for Saturday, Oct. 27. Event organizers encourage participants to design costumes and parade floats around the festival theme — embracing everything from old-style board games to online role-playing challenges. They might draw inspiration from suspects in Clue, riverboat gamblers, bingo bimbos or quest-focused avatars from the “World of Warcraft” universe. The glamorous gaming action is to begin with a Royal Coronation Ball Friday, Oct. 19 where a king and queen are crowned to rule over the festivities. Also that weekend, the familyfriendly Goombay street party takes place in historic Bahama Village, saluting Key West’s Caribbean roots. In addition, Key West Burlesque will present “Madame DuJour’s Magical Game Show and Burlesque Experience” Oct. 19 through Oct. 26. The tantalizing parody blends performance, pageantry and prizes for audience members. Subsequent festival highlights include Wednesday’s wacky Pet Masquerade, where creatures ranging from dogs and cats to “angry

birds” compete for costume prizes along with their human companions. Thursday night, contestants at the 36th annual Headdress Ball engage in a not-so-trivial pursuit: displaying huge and elaborate masks and headgear while vying for “over the top” prizes. Throughout the festival, attendees can immerse themselves in fantasy roles at themed parties, costume competitions and other gatherings. Antics on the overflowing schedule include the Ringmaster’s Pool Party, glow galas, toga and tutu affairs, the Venetian Masquerade Ball, a retro beach bash and a Zombie Bike Ride reminiscent of the “Resident Evil” video game. Duval Street becomes an amusement arcade Friday as vendors of costumes, arts and crafts, food and libations sell their wares in the mile-long Fantasy Fest Street Fair. In addition, the Masquerade March draws masked and costumed merrymakers for an exuberant walking parade. The role-playing revelry is to reach its climax Saturday, Oct. 27, during the Bud Light Fantasy Fest Parade through Key West’s historic downtown. Tens of thousands of spectators typically converge to cheer the parade’s exotic marching groups, island-style bands, costumed characters and lavishly decorated motorized floats. 81-mile Florida Keys Sculpture Trail

The Florida Keys’ cultural offerings provide visitors an intriguing contrast to the island chain’s water-related and environmental activities. Those offerings were recently augmented by the debut of the 81-mile Florida Keys Sculpture Trail. Extending from Islamorada to Key West, the trail consists of nine largescale sculptures at locations along the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Because the highway is the only road stretching throughout the island chain, the sculptures are easily viewable by people traveling around the Keys. The trail was the vision of Key West philanthropists John Padget and Jacob Dekker, who gifted the sculptures to the Keys community and visitors. Seven are currently installed and the remaining two are to be installed in the near future. The sculptures were created by artists participating in the prestigious Art Students League of New York’s “Model to Monument” program. In 2016, the large-scale artworks stood in Manhattan’s Riverside Park South along the Hudson River. The sculptures’ relocation and Keys installation is a collaborative effort involving the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Monroe County Art in Public Places Committee and Monroe County

Board of County Commissioners. Works include “Leaves of Grass” by Markus Holtby, standing in Marathon at The Art Studio at 12353 Overseas Highway; and “Avis Gloriae et Lavdis,” or “bird of glory and praise,” and “Nature Eternal” — both by Sheila Berger and welcoming visitors at the Key West International Airport. “Wind Tower,” a collaborative piece by all seven of the “Model to Monument” sculptors, is located at 258 Cunningham Lane, the site of Grimal Grove, on Big Pine Key. “Stand Tall, Stand Loud” by Aaron Bell and “Everyone Breaks” by Tanda Francis share the landscape at Marathon’s oTHErside Adventure Park at 59300 Overseas Highway. Sarah Thompson Moore’s “Everything Between,” installed in Islamorada Gardens at 81001 Overseas Highway, is soon to be joined by James Mikhel Emerson’s “Bridge.” The other sculpture awaiting installation is “Fragments” by Shiho Sato, to be placed in Islamorada’s Morada Way Arts & Cultural District. Visitors eager to travel the trail and view the artistry can find an easy-to-use map in the arts council’s 2018 Gallery Guide. It can be accessed and downloaded at www.keysarts.com.
