The Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Theatre Program will present The Misanthrope by Moliere and directed by Dan Bacalzo Oct. 29 through Nov. 7 at TheatreLab in the Arts Complex at FGCU. What value does the truth hold? Alceste fervently believes that honesty is always the best policy, but finds that not everyone agrees with him – including the woman he loves. Paul Franklin, Michael Viselli and Jennifer Todesca in Joey & Mariaʼs Comedy Italian Wedding

Joey & Maria’s Comedy Italian Wedding in Naples and Bonita

Joey and Maria’s Comedy Italian Wedding is an interactive dinner show that began in 1992. This show is written by Darlyne Franklin who is formerly Darlyne Dorato a native East Bostonian and now a resident of Bonita Springs. The show was derived from her observing how people enjoyed (in the early ‘90s) the trending murder mysteries and karaoke. People wanted to be part of the show. Merging her comedy and TV writing experience she decided to write a comedy wedding. An event where the audience is part of the show, they’re the invited guests, they dance, drink, eat, mingle with each other and the bridal party. Believing “it’s best to write what you know,”,she made the show like her own families’ traditional weddings, Italian. At every Italian wedding, the dad chooses the music, the uncle sings Mack the Knife, the groomsman makes a revealing toast about the groom, the Nonna sings the wrong lyrics to Cellaluna, someone over drinks, someone gets a “weekend pass from jail” from the Governor, you know, a regular wedding. It’s a blast. It has run in more than 19 major cities across the United States including Las Vegas, Boston and New York. It is also played in The United Kingdom, Greece, Ireland, Australia and Canada. Joey & Maria’s Comedy Wedding open Nov. 11 at The Ballroom inside The Naples Women’s Club, 570 Park St. (off 5th Ave) – it will run a random 7 days a week. Ticket price for November and December is $75 per person and includes dinner prepared by Artichoke & Company.

10 - OCTOBER 2021

It’s a great event for family and friends to gather for the holiday weeks. From January though April, tickets will be $85 per person. Also in January through March, the show will be running random dates at The Elks Bonita/Estero, 3231 Coconut Road, Bonita Springs Tickets there will be $60 per person with dinner. Meet playwright Darlyne Franklin

She has been married to Paul Franklin for 40 years, but not in a row. They recently remarried for a second time. She was one of the early pioneers of Darlyne Franklin interactive theater, beginning in 1992 when she wrote and produced Joey & Maria’s Comedy Italian Wedding. This show has enjoyed a tremendously successful run, being in continuous production. She also created additional interactive shows such as The Wake of Matty O’Malley, Wicked Real Housewives of the Mob and The Soprano’s Last Supper, which were performed in Las Vegas venues for over ten years.

White Rabbit Red Rabbit runs Oct. 14 - 23 at Laboratory Theater with nine different actors

The Laboratory Theater of Florida, in association with Aurora Nova Productions and Boat Rocker Entertainment, will present the Southwest Florida premiere of White Rabbit Red Rabbit by Nassim Soleimanpour from Oct. 14 through Oct. 23. With no rehearsal, no director, a different actor each night, and a script waiting in a sealed envelope on stage, this show is a theatrical experience that reminds us of the transformative power of theater. The play is written by Nassim Soleimanpour, who could not leave Iran when he wrote White Rabbit Red Rabbit due to his refusal to serve in the military as what we would call a conscientious objector. This refusal resulted in the revocation of his passport, and the restriction of his international travel privileges. He encourages participants to break traditional theater etiquette and leave their cell phones on for reasons explained before the performance. The lineup of actors and celebrity performers includes Stephanie Davis, Sonya McCarter, Dave Yudowitz, Eric Raddatz, Randall Kenneth Jones, Melanie Payne, PJ McCready, Lucy Sundby and Ella Nayor. Arts for ACT Gallery to showcase the works of artist Diana Ripoll ART

Arts for ACT Gallery will feature abstract, acrylic mixed media artist Diana Lynn Ripoll in October. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. Diana has always had a natural fascination for brilliant color and abstract ideas. She has had the good fortune of traveling the world and her mind has become a vast well of snapshots and experiences. Diana’s subconscious draws upon these snapshots to create her art. Choosing the colors that attract her, Diana adds colors and makes them flow, mix and move. Finding hidden images, she begins to consciously bring these images out. The true meaning of each piece is revealed when the piece is completed. Having no formal training, Diana relies on optimism, experimentation and intuition to create her works. She is methodical but not a perfectionist. Diana is a perpetual art student, grateful for her art mentors.

20 - OCTOBER 2021

“I consider it a great privilege to paint and be heard above this noisy world without speaking,” says Ripoll. This non-profit gallery is devoted to representing the distinctive and offers premium quality original works of art! The monies raised support Abuse Counseling and Treatment, Inc., the domestic violence, sexual assault and human

trafficking center serving Lee, Hendry and Glades counties. Come view these creative artworks and support ACT Gallery. This exhibit continues through Monday, Nov. 1. Arts for ACT Gallery is located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers. For more info, call 239-337-5050. Happenings Magazine

Hot Works opens outdoor art festival

season in Fort Myers and Naples

The Florida outdoor art show season kicks off with Hot Works 26th Estero Fine Art Show Oct. 23 and 24 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers and the 5th Naples Fine Art Show Oct. 30 and 31 at the Naples Italian-American Foundation. These boutique-style art shows feature quality juried fine art and fine craft artists with all discipline for sale – paintings, clay, glass, sculpture, fiber, wood, jewelry and more. All artwork is original and personally handmade by the artist who is present at the show. There is something for everyone, in all price ranges. There are $1,500 in professional artist awards with criteria based on technique/execution, originality and booth appearance. COVID safety precautions will be in place as the art shows are held outdoors, and there is plenty of room for social distancing. Meet featured glass artist Sue Ayala from Daytona Beach at the Estero Fine Art Show at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. Sue conceives her works as she strolls along the shoreline. Sharing the endless circle of creation with the flocks of birds gathered along her way, sometimes wheeling above. Observing the magnificent marine life so abundant around her, and then capturing the movement of life and time in a timeless moment, frozen in the liquid medium of glass. Sue does this by employing the technique of lampworking in the art medium of glass. Using rods of borosilicate glass, which is the hardest available, she heats it in the flame of a torch and uses not much else but gravity and a gentle nudge of a graphite 24 - OCTOBER 2021

paddle to coax the glass into the desired shape, sometimes entirely coating the clear glass with color, sometimes just adding accents of dots and lines. The finished glass is then annealed in a furnace to remove any possible stress points which could weaken or cause a failure of the piece. At the Naples Fine Art Show on Oct. 30 and 31, meet internationally renowned Sculptor, Domenico Belli. Born in Patrica, Italy, a small village in the hill country approximately 40 miles from Rome, the town is ancient and his family can trace its lineage back for many generations. He started to work as a metal worker at the age of 16 and he showed an early interest and talents for his job. At the age of 18, his parents decided to emigrate to America and he was able to find employment as a metal worker and welder and all the while he had also developed his skills as an artist and designer. His sculptures combine the past and the present. He has an affinity toward the materials he works with, a deep sense of emotion, feelings and dreams for what the material used for at one time and will become in his hands. Belli says, “I have been creating primitive and modern sculptures from reclaimed steel for several years now. I like to challenge myself with different subjects and sizes...flower, animal and abstract modern sculptures. My skills of heating, bending, and welding metal all give different spectacular results. The skill coupled with my passion for excellence and integrity into designing metal and shaping into an art form is appreciated and valued by my clients.” Domenico Belli’s art is throughout the United States in private collections as well as Happenings Magazine

Neenie’s House presents StorySmack Oct. 8 Neenie’s House will host its first ever “StorySmack” on Friday, Oct. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. StorySmack at Neenie’s House has its creative origin in the belief that everyone loves a good story and that being “Smack” in the middle of it makes the story even better. Mary Lou Williams, local professional storyteller, will be teaming up with Sandra Coyle, local jewelry artist, to entertain attendees with an enchanting story about the roles that jewelry-making and storytelling have played in their lives and friendship over the past 17 years. At StorySmack, Mary Lou and Sandra will delight visitors with an original performance of their story about how one went from college professor to jewelry designer while the other transformed from an unadorned “plain Jane” to the epitome of a “Jewelry Junkie.” Audience members will be invited to play along as well; so, if you’d like, plan to bring a piece of jewelry that has a story to be told. For those who love to shop, Sandra will be showcasing a limited collection of her hand-made jewelry that started it all.

Storyteller Mary Lou Williams and artist Sandra Coyle

Plan to come to the East Palm Neighborhood and enjoy the art and craft of both the personal story and the story that a piece of jewelry - even one that’s sitting in your jewelry box - can evoke. Join this night of creativity and conversation on Friday, Oct. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Neenie’s House Arts & Cultural Emporium, 481 Marsh Ave., Fort Myers. For additional information, contact Janeen Vanko, owner, at 224-678-4901. Jump out of the box and visit a true Florida local neighborhood. “Bring it on to East Palm,” adds Vanko. Cecilia Valadez at DAAS Co-Op ART

In the month of October, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of Mexican artist Cecilia Valadez. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Oct. 31. Valadez art is influenced by her homeland of Mexico and the Southwest Florida environment. Her paintings provide an extraordinary insight into human nature, especially women, who have been the central theme of hers. The woman, as the main figure, is the subject and the center of her works and is expressed in integrated textures and monochromatic tones. In these forms of expression, she evokes extraordinary visions and transitions of life as the main inspiration, influenced and touched by the new life that she chose to live. Valadez’ easel art has been included in important exhibitions such as SW Florida History Museum, Naples Depot, Baker Museum in Naples, International Art Fair and Biennial in Miami, Gulf Coast University, Hodges University and others in New York and Mexico. In addition, several of her works are part of private European collections. The female figurative paintings symbolize the artistic essence of life and explore the spontaneity and drama of our Spanish language. The visual intensity and psychological drama in these magnificent paintings reveal a timeless perspective and capture the passion, emotion and visceral mystique of the female figure. Her passionate creative strokes capture a unique artistic vision.

The gallery invites all Southwest Florida art collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join us for the opening reception on Friday, October 1, 2021, starting at 6:00pm and meet the artist. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly

Wegman and Massing exhibit at FSW

Florida Southwestern State College presents William Wegman & Jack Massing: Two Clever By Half – A Call & Response Project at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery now through Dec. 4. Described by the artists as “an experimental visual discussion in a studio setting within the gallery,” this site-specific exhibition premieres newly-commissioned collaborative works in a frequently evolving installation. With the artists-inresidence often creating work in “full-view” during regular/public Gallery hours, this exhibition will provide an unprecedented opportunity to experience the “work-inprogress” of internationallyrenowned (yet, first-time) collaborators Jack Massing and William Wegman. Best known for photography, video, paintings and drawings frequently depicting his beloved subject of Weimaraner dogs with great humor, character and gravitas, William Wegman (b. 1943) has been featured in numerous solo gallery exhibitions and museum retrospectives throughout the United States, Europe and Asia since the 1970’s. He has created film works for Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and been a featured guest onThe Tonight Show with Johnny

Carson and with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman and The Colbert Report. For more than 35 years, from 1983 until his partner’s death in 2019, Jack Massing (b. 1959) collaborated almost exclusively with Michael Galbreth as the conceptual artists duo, The Art Guys. Experimenting with a wide range of materials and activities, using a “direct-to-the public” methodology that often circumvented the established art world, The Art Guys staged exhibitions and events at grocery stores, movie theaters, airports, restaurants, sports arenas, and many other non-traditional venues, while also exploiting mass media and entertainment to explore contemporary society. Once described in the New York Times as “a cross between Dada and David Letterman, John Cage and the Smothers Brothers,” Massing and Galbreth, much like current collaborator William Wegman, were known to use humor and every day materials as a way to demystify art and to welcome a broad range of audiences. Likened to medieval court jesters and fools, The Art Guys not only accepted, but greatly appreciated the comparison. Well known for The Art Guys numerous staged performances, public spectacles and “behavioral” interventions, Jack Massing has consistently challenged perceived divisions between art and life. Presenting these collaborative exchanges for the first time (and as they are conceived), Jack Massing and William Wegman will premiere their “experimental visual discussion in a studio setting” within the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery on the Fort Myers campus of FSW. exhibit at FGCU

The Florida Gulf Coast University Art Galleries of the Bower School of Music & the Arts presents Spencer Gillespie: Formal Fluidity, with an opening artist talk from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at ArtLab in the west side of the Library Building at FGCU. The exhibition runs through Nov. 10, and is made possible with the generous support of the FGCU Alumni Association; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; and WGCU Public Media. Spencer Gillespie graduated from FGCU in 2017 and recently completed her MFA at Colorado State University. This solo exhibition features a body of work exploring how identity performs within the realms of aesthetics through process and material selection. The paintings allow us to ask how a provisional approach fits within the continued legacy of abstraction and how identity is embodied through action and mark making rather than representational form. Happenings Magazine

Currently living and working in St. Paul, Minnesota, Gillespie will be at FGCU for the opening to discuss her work and her journey since graduating from FGCU. Each year, FGCU Art Galleries produces an exhibition of art program alumni’s continuing work in fine art. Many of the exhibitions feature two or three artists, but when we have alumni who have completed their Master of Fine Arts, we celebrate this significant achievement with a solo exhibition in the ArtLab, located in the heart of FGCU’s campus. For a preview of her work, visit Gillespie’s website at www.spencergillespie.com The ArtLab is in the west side of the Library Building on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking for visitors to the gallery is available in Lot 7. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is closed during university holidays. Tabarrini Children’s Music Outreach Foundation. Anyone of any age can participate; a solo or group, performing covers or original music. It’s an opportunity to take their musical journey to the next level. All participants that audition will receive valuable input from professional musicians to help them grow. The Top 25 will showcase their talent on Nov.13 at the Rock The Stage Preview Show. The top three will then compete in the finals in December at the 1st Annual Rock The Stage Fest along with top local and national acts. The winner receives recording session time to record an EP at the world class Dream Studios. They will also receive a free year of the Performance, Songwriting, or Band Coaching programs from School of Rock Fort Myers. The two runners up each will receive a one song EP courtesy of Howard Wulkan of Farmadelica Sound and six months of the Performance, Songwriting, or Band Coaching pro-

grams from School of Rock Fort Myers. Auditions will be held weekly, every Sunday at School of Rock Fort Myers Sept. 26 through Oct. 31. Local and national performers and personalities will be judging auditions, offering valuable feedback and tips for improvement. Audition sign-up can be completed online at www.rockthestageswfl.com or by calling School of Rock at 239-932-7625. Video audition submissions are accepted and highly encouraged as space and time will be limited. Submissions can be mailed to rockthestage2021@gmail.com until Oct. 31. If chosen to perform live, those submitting videos will be required to attend. Not every kid that wants to play music gets the chance to because of limited financial resources, or music programs being cut from school curriculums for lack of funding. The Tabarrini Foundation’s goal is to enrich and transform the lives of deserving children in Southwest Florida, by nurturing them in the joy of making music through group guitar lessons. 38 Special

38 Special will headline new festival in January

Free event also has Molly Hatchet, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Georgia Satellites

Galeana Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram presents the Southern Fried Swamp Jam Festival at Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee on Saturday, Jan. 8 starting at 11 a.m. The free festival will feature six full-length, outdoor concerts with additional entertainment in the Zig Zag Lounge, as well as a truck and bike show, a large vendor section and a variety of food trucks. Admission is free, and attendees should bring their own chairs for concert viewing. The lineup for the Swamp Jam Festival includes: 38 Special: After more than three decades together, 38 Special continue to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. At each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. With sales in excess of 20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’,” “Second Chance,” and more – timeless hits that remain a staple on radio and immediately recognizable from the first opening chord. Molly Hatchet: In the early 1970s, a new form of music was emerging in the South: a mixture of blues, country, gospel and Englishinvasion rock and roll was to be christened “Southern Rock.” The music was filled with style and emotion and with bands in the forefront 62 - OCTOBER 2021

such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a band from Jacksonville called Molly Hatchet, named after a famous 17thcentury axe murderess “hatchet molly” who would behead her lovers with the hand tool Lizzy Borden made famous. The Fabulous Thunderbirds: For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group’s distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique hybrid via such barnburners as “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up.” Cofounder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation. The Georgia Satellites: At a time when rock and roll didn’t care about its roots, the Georgia Satellites came crashing into the charts with a surprise hit single to remind everybody where the music had come from. The hit single, 1986’s “Keep Your Hands to Yourself,” rocked as hard as an old Chuck Berry song, as well as being almost as clever. The Satellites weren’t a back-to-basics roots rock band, either – their straightforward sound borrowed equally from Berry, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, Little Feat, and AC/DC, with a Southern backwoods bent. And Southwest Florida favorites Chasing Dallas, Jack Michael Band and Mike Imbasciani and His Bluez Rockerz. John Fogerty,

Foreigner at Hertz Arena Nov. 21 for charity event

The Charity Pros, a Fort Myers non-profit, has announced the launch of the “Charity Pros for Heroes” concert tour to honor the frontline healthcare workers and first responders who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraiser events will help provide educational scholarships and a “Megan’s Wish” grant to the children left behind by the death of our fallen heroes. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend John Fogerty will headline the three Florida events with support from powerhouse classic rock band Foreigner, Hall of Fame band Cheap Trick, country artist Lauren Alaina and a special appearance by American Idol finalist, and Florida native, Casey Bishop. John Fogerty and special guest Foreigner will perform Nov. 21 at Hertz Arena in Estero. Tickets went on sale Sept. 10 for that show. “Every day, we learn of the incredible stories of the children nationwide who are dealing with the effects of losing their parent,” explains Megan Maloney, founder of The Charity Pros. “These heroes go to work on the front lines every day, during our darkest times; many have given their lives protecting us from the very fate they eventually suffered, COVID-19.” Megan, a young entrepreneur and budding philanthropist, co-founded the Charity Pros with her father, Brad Maloney, and family friends like Keith Hudson, father of pop star Katy Perry, just prior to the pandemic. Their mission was to advocate for children’s social causes and help provide them opportunities for a better life. But once the pandemic hit, Megan learned about the hundreds of struggling children left behind by the fallen heroes and revamped some of the programming of the charity to offer them help. “It hit home early during the pandemic when my dad lost a childhood friend, Naples firefighter Tony Christensen to COVID,” explains Megan. “It really shook Happenings Magazine

him up, so we started to research the families of the heroes that were left behind.” His death inspired the “Charity Pros for Heroes” virtual concert featuring over 20 artists and celebrities in April 2021. “These kids need our help; they are grieving the loss of a parent,” explains Keith Hudson. “This really goes straight to your heart. So many of these kids couldn’t see their parent for days due to working around the clock and the need to quarantine. Some kids never even got to say goodbye to their hero. It’s heartbreaking.” John Fogerty will be playing his iconic hits from Creedence Clearwater Revival and his solo career every night of the Heroes Tour and will be joined by one of the supporting bands and some surprises on every stop. “Each show will be a little different,” explains Megan. “Plus, you never know who else may show up. It is truly a blessing to have John Fogerty and all of these incredible artists join us in honoring the heroes.” The Charity Pros are already planning additional tours and events for 2022. “We have had several artists reach out about getting involved,” Megan added. “We need donors to join us supporting these kids and

sponsors to take the tour around the country. The Charity Pros are here to make a difference. Music heals the mind, body, and soul. You never know, we may be coming to a city near you.” Event organizers are working with local fire departments for the huge community event on Nov. 21 to honor first responders. There will be raffles and fundraiser activities. Plans are to honor area fire and law enforcement personnel who have passed recently. For people wanting to support the efforts, here are some options: • You can send a Hero to the concert, make a $100 donation and ticket will be donated to local public service departments for distribution. • Make a $200 donation and go to the VIP Pre-show Party hosted by Casey Bishop (she will perform) complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and special appearance by Foreigner (not performing) • Tony Christensen Future Firefighter Scholarship - Make a donation to provide financial assistance to individuals wanting a career as a firefighter.
