Officiallykickingoffits14thseason, TheLaboratoryTheaterofFloridais excitedtopayhomagetothetheatrical artswithaplaywithinaplay-where everythingthatcangowrongdoes, withhilariousresults.

PartMontyPython,partSherlock Holmes,andallmayhem,thisOlivier Award-winningshowisdisastrously delightful.ThefictitiousCornley PolytechnicDramaSociety,whoselimitedfundshaveallowedthemtoproducehitssuchasJamesandthe PeachandTheLionandThe Wardrobe,hasreceivedasubstantial donationtoproduceanexcitingwhodunit,TheMurderatHaversham Manor.

ThePianoLesson,setin1936 Pittsburgh,focusesontheconflicting willsofbrotherandsister,BoyWillie andBerniece,regardingtheirfamily’s mostimportantheirloom,apiano.But thisisnoordinarypianoasitcontains intricatecarvingsbytheirgreat-grandfatherdepictingthemanystrugglesin theirfamilyhistory.Thepianowas originallyownedbytheslaveowners oftheirfamily,withcarvingsoftheir great-grandmother,grandfather,and thelikenessoftheirwholefamilytree.

BoyWilliewantstosellthepiano topurchaseaparceloflandin Mississippi,apieceoftheveryland onwhichhisancestorshadbeen slaves.Thiswouldallowhimtofinallyachievehis dreamofmakingalivingfarminghisownproperty.But

Johnisaretirededucator withalifelonginterestin workingwithwood.Heis nowfocusingontheartof woodturning,andenjoys creatingpieceswithatechniquecalledsegmented woodturning.Onestyleof thistechniqueisacomplex processknownasbasket illusionwoodturning.

Abasicdesignandpatternisfirstdrawnongraph paper.Thenwoodsegmentsarecutandgluedin

ringstoformtheshapeof thepiece.Theringsare turnedonalatheintothe shapeofthedesignand horizontalbeadsareturned intothepiece.

Awoodburningtoolis usedtoformthousandsof individualsmallbeadsalong verticalguidelines,andall thebeadsarethenpainted withIndiainktomirrorthe originaldesign.

Theresultisawood turnedpiecethatgivesthe illusionofbeingawoven basket.Thepublicisinvited tostopinandseeJohn’s fascinatingartwork,aswell asnewpiecescreatedover thesummerbytheGallery’s memberartists.

Flotsamwascreatedbyartist DonaldGialenalla,anartistspecializinginthedesignandfabricationof publicart.Knownforhislarger-thanlifesculpturesinpublicandprivate collectionsacrosstheUnitedStates, hisworkisinstalledinoveradozen citiesfromCaliforniatoNewYork, andnowthecampusofAlliancefor theArts.Hisbackgroundincludes teachingartatBilkentUniversityin Ankara,Turkey,and10yearsasan Emmywinningtelevisiongraphicsproducer inNewYorkCity.

Flotsamstands11foottalland20long longandwascreatedinthestudioand deliveredtothesiteasafinishedsculpture.

OriginallyfeaturedinArtFest’sWeAre Overflowing,anartexhibitioncreatedto showcasethepollutionproblemandthe beautycreatedfromupcyclingdiscarded materials.

Theoriginalinstallationfeaturedasurrounding3foottallcircularlowfenceapproximately25 feetindiameterintowhichvisitorsdepositedtheiremptybottles andcanstofillupthe"ocean" aroundhim,coveringthewheels andbraceswithaseaofbottles. Flotsamwasmadeofrepurposed plasticandrecycledobjectsfirmly attachedwithstainlesshardware toapaintedwoodenarmature.

Hotel California – A Salute to The Eagles is bringing their unique sound back to Southwest Florida this fall when they perform Monday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center in downtown Punta Gorda.

Thirty-fourcenturiesago,a youngpharaoh,worshipedas agod,waslaidtoeternalrest inallhissplendor,hisrule mysteriouslycutshortbyan unknowntragedy.Aninnocent puppet-ruler,hehadbeen caughtinthemiddleofadangerousandprofoundpolitical, spiritual,andartisticrevolution againsttheentirepantheonof ancientEgyptiangodsbythe firstmonotheisticreligiouscult inhistory.Hiddenindarkness beneaththedesertsandfor over3millennia,hisspectaculargoldentreasureswere finallybroughttolightwith theirdiscoverybyHoward Carterin1922,tobeginfulfillingtheirancientmagicaltask ofensuringthatthenameof Tutankhamun,thelong-forgottenboypharaoh,wouldlive forever.
