Publisher’s Spotlight

Safe and entertaining

Our first professional theatre in Southwest Florida reopened in August. Operating at 50% capacity, the Broadway Palm started its new season with Dean Martin Variety Hour that runs through Sept. 26. The leadership and staff at Broadway Palm have created a very safe environment for enjoying live theatre. Salads are delivered to your table. You are served by staff at the buffet (or order off the menu) and desserts are pre-plated. No customers touch any food items that have been touched by other customers. Dining tables are separated and more private. Sanitizers and signage are all over, and masks are required when not eating or drinking. As for the show on stage, well, it is simply a wonderful step back in time with Dean Martin (played by the multitalented Seth Abrahms) and his ensemble of singers and dancers who recreate the old television show. Musically for me, the show stopper was the duet between Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland. Other guests to the Dean Martin Variety Hour include Cher, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Darin, Marilyn Monroe, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Frank Sinatra and, of course, Sammy Davis Jr. A special tip of the hat to SW Florida’s Victor Legaretta for creating, writing and directing the wonderful show. Again, well done to those on and off stage for making this production safe and entertaining. Meanwhile, some of our community theatres are back on stage. Cultural Park Theater in Cape Coral is offering two productions this month. On Stage ... Places Please will be performed Sept. 10 - 20, and Jersey Girls will be presented Sept. 24 - Oct. 4. The Charlotte Players will present A Shot in the Dark Sept. 11 - 20 at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. Staying with social distancing, the Laboratory Theater of Florida will broadcast its production of Disenchanted on Sept. 18 and 26 and Oct. 4.

Enjoy a fun-filled trip back in time with this classic throwback to the old Dean Martin Variety Show. Broadway Palm is offering a special and all tickets are just $50 for dinner and the show. Due to the current environment, Broadway Palm has made numerous adjustments and taken several measures to assure the health and safety of their cast members, employees, and customers. In adhering with the CDC recommendations, the theatre is operating at a 50% capacity with social distancing being encouraged throughout the theatre, and guests will be required to wear masks while not eating or drinking. The seating arrangement has been altered to appropriately space the tables, and all tables will be private. A choice of salad and soup will be served to the tables, and attendants will be serving guests at the hot buffets. On Friday and Saturday evenings, there is a plated dinner option as well as the traditional buffet. Broadway Palm has always had a rigorous sanitation process in place, but they have implemented new cleaning and sanitizing procedures including utilizing UV lights before and after performances; the entire building was treated with Vibrant’s PermaSafe Process which included a cleaning and shield application that kills up to 99.99% of germs, bacteria, viruses, other harmful microbes; and they added a bipolar ionization system into their air conditioning units which is a technology that deactivates harmful substances such as bacteria, viruses and more. In addition, temperature checks will be performed on everyone that enters the building and admittance will not be allowed to anyone with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. Employees and cast members went through an extensive evaluation before being able to return to

Charlotte Players move forward with two events in September

With extensive COVID-19 precautions in place, Charlotte Players is continuing its 2010-21 season with two big events in September. First up is A Shot in the Dark, a mysterycomedy set for seven shows from Sept. 11 - 20 at the Langdon Playhouse, 1182 Market St. in Port Charlotte. Adapted by Harry Kurnitz from the 1962 French play L’Idiote by Marcel Archard, A Shot in the Dark is an ingenious “whodunit” and cheeky comedy with a very dramatic outlook on love and passion. This classic French farce has plenty of surprises throughout the show that will keep you guessing to the very end. In this play, a maid is suspected of killing a chauffeur, and only a romantic magistrate believes her innocence. The setting is Paris in the chamber of the examining magistrate. Ken Crisp is directing. A Shot in the Dark originally opened at the Booth Theater on Broadway in 1961 and ran for 389 performances. The original cast included William Shatner, Julie Harris, and Walter Matthau, who won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Tickets are $22 for adult and $11 for students, and may be ordered on the Charlotte Players website (www.charlotteplayers.org) or by calling 941-255-1022. Next up in September is Comedy for a Cause, the Players’ premier fund-raising event. Now in its eighth year, the event fea-

tures community and business leaders presenting improvisational skits in the manner of television’s “Whose Line is it Anyway?” Due to the ongoing virus concerns, Comedy for a Cause is being held at the Langdon with an “all-star” cast of past participants and a limited audience this year. It will be broadcast live on the Players Facebook page at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 25. The new format was adopted by Charlotte Players executive director Sherrie Moody, Comedy for a Cause director Dr. Chris Constance and executive producer Steve Lineberry. “We felt that with a different type of cast and different type of production, we wouldn’t miss a beat for the 2020 season,” Lineberry said. “We wanted the Charlotte Players to be able to give back during this tough time,” said Dr. Constance. “We thought that doing a virtual event, opening it up to the public and letting anybody watch it who wants to, would provide a welcome respite from the negative news. And if they decide to donate or participate and help out, that’s wonderful, but we didn’t want this to be a year without Comedy for a Cause and we thought it was so important to be able to deliver for the community.” Sponsorships start at $100 and offer a wide variety of opportunities to local businesses. The sponsorship deadline is Sept. 21. Another major source of revenue will be

the “Curtain Call” online silent auction coordinated by Jessica Cantwell, business development director for Life Care Center of Punta Gorda. Cantwell is seeking items for the auction such as gift baskets, gift cards, retail items, trips, etc. Auction items will be available for bidding from Sept. 19 through Sept. 25 on the Players Facebook page. For sponsorship and auction information, contact Lori Wagner-Ryan at lori.wagner-ryan@charlotteplayers.org or call 941255-1022. “We are practicing social distancing at the Langdon,” Moody said. “We are taking audience members’ temperatures at the door,” she added, “and we have extra ushers and other personnel on hand to sanitize restrooms and wipe down counters and door handles.” Moody used a COVID-19 grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota to acquire preventative equipment, including a disinfectant fog machine, which is used in all areas of the theater between shows. Other devices in place include a half-dozen touchless soap dispensers, a pair of touchless forehead thermometers, 20 floor-distancing stickers, a half-dozen clear acrylic guard shields, and nine wall-mounted hand sanitizers. Audience members are seated far enough apart to meet COVID-19 recommendations and are provided with masks. Additional information is available at 941255-1022. “We want audience members to feel comfortable knowing we have done everything we can to make sure they can enjoy the show,” Moody said. For more show info, visit online at www.charlotteplayers.org.

Laboratory Theater goes virtual with home theater

The overwhelming need to perform, to creatively respond to the changing world around us, and the mandate to keep everyone safe has led the Laboratory Theater's team to develop new ways to continue to entertain. “We have embarked on a hybrid theater-film model, which will allow us to have only one or two actors on stage at any given time to be filmed for future release. Basically, we are putting the ‘theater’ back into home theater,” the local theatre group said. “In order to do this, the entire cast, crew, and Lab team are bound by a strict pandemic protocol that maintains a high level of safety precautions, including a quarantine. The Lab is not embarking on this endeavor lightly, nor without serious conversations with everyone involved, and we hope that you will join us

8 - SEPTEMBER 2020

for the end results and continue to support us as we strive to replace the main source of our income during this challenging time.” Tickets for these filmed stage productions will be on sale soon. The new season starts with Disenchanted!, a new musical comedy. Our story begins years and years after our famous princesses had their supposed “happily ever after.” You can bet that they’re not so thrilled with how things turned out for them! And what better way for them to express their Disenchantment than through song? Three virtual performances will be available: Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. Call 239-218-0481 or visit www.laboratorytheaterflorida.com

Cultural Park reopens and starts new season

with original production

Gulfshore Playhouse returns Nov. 7 with premiere of Higher

Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples will open its 2020-21 season with the world premiere of Higher, written by and starring Jeffrey Binder, associate artistic director of Gulfshore Playhouse, and directed by Kristen Coury, founder and producing artistic director of Gulfshore Playhouse. Running Nov. 7 to Nov. 29, the new one-man production was created expressly for Naples audiences, prioritizing new safety standards while maintaining the highest artistic quality. In this thrilling one-man tour-deforce, two worlds, lives, and times collide in Prague, a magical city filled with ghosts, saints, and whispers of the past. In 1997, a Wanderer makes his way to Prague after a life-altering event causes him to question his purpose in the world. And in 1413, a master architect struggles to build a worthy addition to the crown jewel of the Holy Roman Empire, the magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral. These separate timelines intersect in strange and mysterious ways as both men grapple with their faith, families, and identities. Members of the creative team are scenic designer Kristen Martino; costume designer Kirche Zeile; and sound designer Christopher Colucci. To purchase tickets, visit www.GulfshorePlayhouse.org. By Michael Moran Finally, we are happy to announce the opening of our 58th Broadway season. This season, we indeed celebrate the best of our 58 years of fine entertainment. Season tickets and individual show tickets are on sale now, but again remember following the pandemic, our seating and schedules have changed. But what has not changed is the quality entertainment and affordable prices our patrons have been able to enjoy each year at Cultural Park Theater. This season our production schedules are Thursdays at 7 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays at 3 p.m. With our priority of keeping everyone comfortable, safe and wonderfully entertained, the theater will open at 6 p.m. for our 7 p.m. shows and 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. shows. We will open the theater at 2 p.m. for matinees at 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. When you come in to the theater, you will be able to go directly to your seats so not to crowd the lobby areas. Also keeping with strict social distancing guidelines, we only are selling 55 seats of our 200 seat house, and we do require masks in the building. We have suspended our meet and greet with the cast after productions and to reduce congested hallways, you will be able to exit the theater through several doors at the end of the performance. On Stage...Places Please! is an original musical revue and is the first show in our 2020-2021 season. It features many of our talented youth performers as well as a few familiar faces. On Stage...Places Please showcases the journey of young performers from auditions, through a rehearsal process and finally to the opening night of the production. The show includes many current Broadway tunes with a few classics thrown in along the way. The show runs

Sept. 10 through Sept. 20. We strongly suggest you call the box office early for tickets, as with the very limited seating we expect most productions to be sold out. Next up on Sept. 24 through Oct. 4, we open our most popular revue, The Jersey Girls. A main stage staple at the theater, we are showcasing this revue revamped, fresh and original. Yet this show in itself has become a repeating hit on our stage by audience demand. Each recreation of this hit has had audiences on their feet singing, laughing and yes sometimes dancing in the aisles. Since opening on our main stage in 2015 and now back by popular demand, Jersey Girls is a tribute to the many girl groups we all loved to hear like The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Angels and many more will take you back on a truly nostalgic trip with songs like “Stop in the Name of Love,” “Heat Wave,” “My Boyfriend’s Back” and many more, as our contestants gather at the Jersey Shore to compete for the coveted title of the Best Jersey Girl Group. As we continue to work our way through the financial losses, watch our web site and social media pages for special events that will be celebrating and raising funds for Cultural Park Theater, our county’s oldest and best live theater venue. We realize it is impossible to guarantee we can eliminate risk of people catching the virus outside of staying at home, but with our plans for reopening that are posted on our website along with continuing super sanitization of the building costumes, props limited contact with staff. We are taking every step to insure our patrons of the safety precautions when they enter Cultural Park. Our theater is daily fogged and sanitized with hospital grade disinfectant. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral. Call the box office for more information at 239-772-5862 or visit www.culturalparktheater.com. Michael Moran is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company. SEPTEMBER 2020 - 9

Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda to host virtual open house Sept. 9 - 11

The Visual Arts Center (VAC) will host a virtual open house on Facebook Live Sept. 9 – 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the virtual open house, live broadcasts featuring VAC instructors will begin every half hour at www.facebook.com/VACPuntaGorda. Instructors will present a short demonstration and answer questions from viewers in the comments section. All who comment will be entered in a prize drawing. Viewers can expect to learn all about open studios, online and onsite classes that are set to begin in October. If you miss the live open house, recordings will be available on Facebook, and via an interactive Virtual Tour of the VAC building at www.VisualArtCenter.org. To reduce personal contact, the center asks all customers to register and pay online in advance for open studios, classes and exhibits and limit in-person participation to no more than 10 per session. They encourage anyone who registers for anything and does not feel well to remain home and let them know. They will provide full credit for anything missed. The VAC has a “no touch” thermometer at the front desk to be used for group activities, plus gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, disinfectant hand soap, disinfectant sprays, disinfectant wipes, and automatic dispensers available for staff and customers to minimize potential virus spread. They have engaged additional daily cleaning measures. The tables are wiped before and after each use and cleaning wipes and disinfectant sprays are available in each classroom. As an extra precaution, the VAC encourages each participant to wipe their space before and after use. Masks are required in accordance with the City of Punta Gorda Ordinance which currently is in place through Oct. 7. As long as the ordinance is in place or until it is safe to stop, all staff will wear masks in the VAC common areas and a sign requesting all visitors wear masks is on the front door, the entry to each gallery and at the front desk. Floor markers encouraging everyone to stay 6 feet apart have been placed around the Front Desk and at the entry to each gallery. The Visual Arts Center is located at 210 Maud St. in Punta Gorda and can be reached at 941-639-8810. Our galleries are always free and open to the public. D.M. Palmer won first in the 2019 Color exhibit with “Red on the River Bend.”

Two new exhibits open Sept. 14

The Visual Arts Center will introduce new exhibits Sept. 14, kicking off what is typically a busy season of exhibits and education. Color will be on display in the main gallery and Black & White will be on display in Goff Gallery. Both exhibits feature a variety of 2D and 3D media, and both are focused on color, or the lack thereof. While Color is centered around an expression of emotion and imagination

using a variety of vivid hues, Black & White challenges artists to use only a grayscale, with an emphasis on lines, value and texture. Displayed together at the VAC, the complimentary exhibits create an exciting visual experience. The VAC will host a virtual awards presentation for Color via Facebook Live Thursday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. Following the awards, both exhibits will also be available as a virtual tour at www.VisualArtCenter.org. Antiques & art combine for new display at DAAS

In the month of September, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is collaborating with Sirena Del Sol Vintage & Antiques for a very special display. The exhibition will feature a select collection of items from the store with original art by the gallery members, in an installation-style setting. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Sept. 26. This is the first collaborative event between DAAS CoOp and Sirena Del Sol. “The vision behind our shop is to give new life to vintage and antique pieces while lessening the impact on our environment,” says owner Marissa Keyes, whose store is just across the street from the Butterfly Estates complex. “We love when customers find the perfectly unexpected vintage item for their space.” “I think that antique/vintage items and original art are the essential elements for good taste in decoration,” says DAAS Co-Op president David Acevedo. “Curating this type of inventory will be a first for me, but I am definitely up for the challenge.”

Happenings Magazine

Marissa Keyes agrees, “Vintage and antiques are a great way to add an element of depth and meaning to your decor. Mixing old in with new is the perfect juxtaposition to take your interior to the next level. At Sirena Del Sol, we are constantly outsourcing, trying to find beautiful pieces for any home.” DAAS invites all Southwest Florida art and antique collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join them for the opening reception. As always, the gallery is filled with the most beautiful inventory of art, fine crafts, apparel, sculptures, pottery and jewelry, all produced here by the member artists. Note that all CDC recommendations are enforced during gatherings, including mandatory masks while inside the venue and limited amount of guests inside the gallery, for everyone’s protection. DAAS Co-Op is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in downtown Fort Myers. The gallery’s temporary business hours are Thursday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the gallery or how to become a member can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

ART

Cuban art at Davis Art Center The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is celebrating the colorful Cuban culture through “Art Looking North” by the Miami Rodriguez Collection in September. An opening reception takes place on Friday, Sept. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. Art Looking North: Cuban Art In The Rodriguez Collection is a selection made by Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center and its art curator, Cesar Aguilera. This collection showcases the work of 21 hand selected artists that have established the key tenets of visual language with global implications that reach beyond the island that is Cuba and its diaspora. The diversity of styles and media represent so much more than a Cuban identity as they come to be recognized in international venues as an affirmation of the island’s long tradition of creativity, academic, and technical excellence, even under the worst of circumstances. Since the beginning, curators and specialized critics worked hand in hand

with the artists. Names known both locally and internationally have been added to our initial intent with the objective of leaving a mark on the CubanAmerican artistic production. Thanks to these collaborations, we now have an important showcase of critical texts. Containing pieces spanning over 50 years, the Rodriguez Collection, dedicated to preserving the history and significance of Cuban art, is just the beginning of an everexpanding gathering of works from artists representing the best of Cuba. This show will continue to be on display Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Sept. 24. Arts for ACT Gallery will feature Kristina Jackson

Arts for ACT Gallery will feature the work of Kristina Jackson in the main gallery in September, while volunteer artists at ACT will be showcased in the white gallery. Both exhibits will open Friday, Sept. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Arts for ACT Gallery, located at 2265 First St. in downtown Fort Myers. “My paintings are a story told in color. I paint every day and often come home to my teenagers and their friends sitting around the table drawing, painting or outside doing chalk art. Art has permeated our home, winding its way into everything we do, it’s not just about the canvas, it’s about enjoying life and projecting those feelings into something tangible,” says

Happenings Magazine

Kristina Jackson. “Art is self discovery, regardless of its form; paint, music, dance, writing. It exists in everything as long as we take the time to see it; I had lost that joy when my focus was in the push of the expected rather than the push of life.” She is currently working on a poetry art book. Arts for ACT Gallery co-op artists and volunteers will exhibit in the white gallery for the month of September. This exhibit will include new works by our working artists. The exhibit will be an eclectic group show with mixed media, fine crafts, art journaling, jewelry, art clothing, oil and acrylic paintings and more. This exhibit continues to Monday, Sept. 28.

Support our local musicians MUSIC

The nation’s entertainment industry continues to take a major financial hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting thousands of lives on stage and back stage. In Southwest Florida, local musicians, singers and bands are trying to make ends meet and be artistically creative at the same time. With restaurants operating at limited capacities and bars and other music venues still idle, it’s been tough for some local acts to get gigs. Additionally, there are many people who still don’t want to go out to public places for health and safety concerns ... but still want live music. Continuing our long-time mission to promote local and live music, Happenings Magazine is spotlighting more local talent. These gifted folks can be seen live at various locations around SW Florida, but you can also support them virtually online through social media (via virtual concerts). And, for those who own a restaurant or need live music for a function or event, these performers are available for hire.

Moony Mann

Moony Mann plays guitar and sings. He performs 400 shows a year in Southwest Florida as a soloist or with The Moony Mann Band. He says he digs cars, guitars, cigars, and anything with handle bars. Moony closed a retail apparel business and retired 14 years ago and went back to his musical roots. Now, he performs as a solo or with the Moony Mann Band as singing, guitar playing front man at some of the best venues in the area. He was voted best entertainer in Naples in 2009. He enjoys traveling and has toured Europe for two weeks every summer since 2001 playing in various venues. He adds that he likes to go crazy in Las Vegas about five times a year. Other members of the Moony Mann Band include Miro Tubic on bass, Mike Barbone on drums and Evan Barr on saxophone. The band is a light dinner background/atmostphere music to full throttle dance band. Because of his busy schedule, he plans to 16 - SEPTEMBER 2020

Thunder Beach

Thunder Beach is a five-piece, classic dance rock, powerhouse group, performing an amazing selection of the best classic rock music from the ‘60s to the ‘80s. They have a focus on tribute-level performances to all the songs you forgot you loved. They've performed festivals, country clubs, bike nights and select local venues. The band’s motto is “Classic Dance Rock ... Done Right!!" Thunder Beach will be performing at the upcoming grand opening of the Twisted Fork restaurant, on the grounds of Bert's Black Widow Harley-Davidson in Port

David C. Johnson, born in Detroit, Mich., began studying piano at the age of 7. He then went on to take up the bass guitar on his own at the age of 11. At an early age, David knew that music was his calling. He performed all over the Detroit area until he took an offer to work with a band in Southwest Florida in 1989. Since that time, David has become one of SW Florida’s premier musicians, and a “first call” bassist. Since 2000, David has toured with the Grammy Award winning legends, The Neville Brothers. He is also currently bassist/vocalist/keyboardist of the Aaron Neville Quintet, with performances on Steven Colbert, CBS This Morning, David Letterman, Jay Leno, the Today Show, Ellen DeGeneres and The Martha Stewart Show to his credit. While at home in Southwest Florida, his unique one-man show, The David Johnson Show spotlights his talents as a multi-instrumentalist/entertainer (keyboard, bass, vocals and guitar). He is often seen at Keylime Bistro on Captiva Island, Dogtooth Sports and Music Bar in Naples (with Mudbone), Seed to Table in Naples, Space 39 Art Bar in Fort Myers, The Center Bar in Bonita Springs and other venues.

Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 4. Thunder Beach band members are Jim Stewart on lead guitar and vocals, John Haussmann on bass guitar and vocals, Vinnie Piccolo on keyboards, Ray Marsch on drums and vocals and Chris Day on lead vocals (and manager). You can find out more about the band, its members, schedule, music videos and contact information, on their website www.thunderbeachband.com or Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thunderbeachband To hire Thunder Beach, call 609-238-8838 or email them at thunderbeachband@gmail.com.

Gulf Coast Symphony to open The sancturary will be converted into a performance space.

Music & Arts Community Center

The Gulf Coast Symphony announced the next great venture in its mission to Create Community Through Music—the opening of a new Music & Arts Community Center (MACC) in Fort Myers. The MACC will be a creative hub where people of all ages and abilities can share music and arts as common ground, and where diversity, expression and self-transformation is the very air we breathe. Not only does this undertaking allow for a major expansion of the Gulf Coast Symphony’s programming and educational outreach, but it provides a path forward for the Gulf Coast Symphony as it pivots operations to adjust to the limitations imposed by the current pandemic. The community center has been a dream 26 years in the making according to music & executive director Andrew Kurtz: “A physical space of our own has been a goal since the symphony was founded—we will now be able to provide so many more opportunities for our community to experience music and the arts in one central location.” The mission of the new MACC is to transform lives throughout Southwest Florida by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences. “Our vision is to build a civic culture that values lifelong involvement in the arts, where all can participate actively in music making and arts experiences. We also want every youngster in Southwest Florida to have access to music instruction both during the day and after school,” adds Kurtz. The new MACC is on the 12.5 acre campus of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers, off of Daniels Parkway on 18 - SEPTEMBER 2020

Shire Lane. Asked about the new partnership, the Board of Trustees for the Unitarian Universalist Church said, “We eagerly set out on a new path together, toward a common community vision. We are proud of and grateful for this new partnership and join with the Gulf Coast Symphony toward making our new endeavor a resounding success!” A truly collaborative effort between the two organizations, renovations are already underway to transform the campus into a world-class performing and educational space. Advanced theatrical lighting, robotic cameras, a video recording suite, and modern audio equipment are being installed to reshape the sanctuary into a 400-seat theatrical venue. Additional renovations and technical upgrades are planned for the existing classrooms, large social hall, and outdoor enclosed patio to create better learning and performance spaces. Renovations are expected to be complete in fall 2020 so that virtual or limited capacity programming can begin. A key adjustment due to the pandemic is the live streaming of our programs, allowing for small (or empty) audiences, while providing a way for our devoted fans, many who are older, to safely enjoy our programs. The new on site video recording suite will allow for performance recordings and live streams, as well as distance learning instruction opportunities. Initial offerings at the MACC include the creation of a new professional chamber orchestra, MusicWorks! after-school orchestral education program, a new ArtsWorks! visual arts education program, year-round classes for all ages, and robust musical performance programming. Sand Sculpting Championship postponed to 2021

After careful consideration, the 34th Annual American Sand Sculpting Championship has been postponed. The plans for the annual November event have been difficult to move forward with given the uncertainty that is currently surrounding outdoor events and festivals. “We are extremely disappointed to be making this announcement” stated Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce executive director Jacki Liszak. “The popularity of this event and the growing interest in it has made this decision very difficult to make.” “Planning and running this event takes a year of preparation and teamwork from all of the event partners. Given the current challenges with COVID-19, we feel that postponing the event and looking forward to 2021 is in the best interest of everyone involved.” Plans are underway for a potential virtual event that will give fans an opportunity to enjoy the sculptors at work in a live remote feed via Facebook. More details will be announced as plans continue to evolve. For updated information and to stay in touch with the American Sand Sculpting Championship, follow it at www.fmbsandsculpting.com or on Facebook. Happenings Magazine
