It’s why we chose Broome as the backdrop for our Summer 2016 collection. After visiting laid-back Byron Bay to ease us into spring, the vibrancy and intensity of Broome helps us truly celebrate the height of summer. We’ve had a love affair with Broome ever since we shot Miranda Kerr here in 2007. Almost 10 years on, we return to our favourite slice of paradise – and with Western Australian local Bridget Malcolm on board, we couldn’t feel more at home. Steeped in a rich history, you can’t help but form a special, if not spiritual, connection to Broome. We were fortunate enough to develop a deeper connection to this land through the exceptional knowledge and passion of Jimmy Edgar and Neil McKenzie, our local Indigenous guides. Our love and respect for Broome is enormous and we would like to thank and acknowledge the traditional land owners of Broome, the Yawuru people, and pay our respect to past and present elders.

Although Broome itself is miles from anywhere, it’s a relief to discover that one of Australia’s most famous (and some would say most beautiful) beaches, Cable Beach, is just a short drive from town. This stunning 22km stretch of pristine white sand was named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889. At one end of the beach lies this cable that connected Australia to the rest of the world for the very first time, at the other you’ll find sets of dinosaur footprints that are over 130 million years old. It serves as a metaphor for Broome itself – a place of striking contrasts. This is perhaps most evident every evening at sunset, when mystified tourists are greeted with the sight of the famous Cable Beach camel train snaking its way across the cooling sands – a picture-perfect slice of Broome. Of course, if you’re just after the best the Australian beach has to offer – warm sand, no crowds, blue skies and an even bluer sea – Cable Beach has got you more than covered. It was also a welcoming and refreshing change to the fast-paced city life of her current base, New York City. “It’s a lot of energy at all times and there’s not a lot of beaches or moments to just take a second”. The realness of Broome was instantly both appealing and familiar for Bridget, having grown up in South Fremantle, a beachside suburb of Perth. “It’s right on the water and it’s beautiful, very surfy with a really chilled vibe,”said Bridget of her home town. For Bridget, there’s no greater feeling than being back on home soil – and Broome truly anchored her back to the Aussie way of life – an active outdoor lifestyle the envy of the rest of the world.

Being shown around by Bridget was a huge highlight for Alena and she immediately fell in love with the laid-back Australian lifestyle. While not in front of the camera, Alena was enjoying the landscape beachcombing or taking a dip in the clear ocean. A big fan of natural, healthy living Alena embraced all the Australian beach lifestyle had to offer.

Should you want to venture out into the endless horizon, a little over an hour outside Broome you’ll happen upon Eco Beach Resort – where incredible natural beauty sits comfortably with luxury accommodation. The resort embraces its wild and unique natural surrounds and offers a laid-back Australian glamping experience to match the locale – with an over one-kilometre stretch of eco tents connected by elevated, wooden boardwalks. Our final secret shoot location was only accessible via 4WD along the beachfront from Eco Beach. And once the girls and the team started to shoot, Jimmy and the Eco beach guides began to fish, producing mud crab after mud crab from a landscape that appeared to have more in common with a desert than a creek. Proving yet again there’s no substitute for local knowledge!
