Remember that it is important to do your research before applying to Higher Education. Make sure that you meet the entry requirements of your chosen course and that you have visited the institution to make sure you feel comfortable before accepting an offer.

February-July Research

Make sure you research your options carefully. Try and visit university and college Open Days which will help you decide what and where you would really like to study. Also ensure you can meet the entry requirements.

Applications are made to UCAS during this period and are submitted online. The Swindon College IAG Team will help you with your application and with writing your personal statement, which is the most important part.

Mid-October

This is the deadline for applications to Oxford, Cambridge and all Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary choices (but not Nursing).

Mid-December

By this time you should have paid your fee to UCAS and submitted your finished application to the IAG Team at Swindon College. This allows four weeks for us to check your application and to write your reference. Although this is not the deadline, the sooner you can get your application in the better!

Mid-January

This is the deadline for UCAS to receive your application. If you have applied via the IAG Team by the mid-December deadline, they will send your application off for you to meet this deadline. You should apply for your Student Loan as soon as the process opens in January. Don’t wait until you have received any offers as this could delay your Loans. There are two available, one to pay your Tuition Fee and one to help with living expenses while you are studying. Visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information.

January-May Offers and Acceptance

This is when universities and colleges will make decisions on applications and send out offers to applicants. When you have received all of your offers, you will need to make one of them your Firm Offer (the one you most want) and make one an Insurance Offer (a back-up choice in case you don’t meet the requirements for your Firm Offer). Don’t miss the date to respond or your choices will be cancelled. It is also important during this time to find out about any financial assistance which might be available to you as a student. This includes bursaries, which are grants from your university or college which don’t have to be paid back.

BTEC results start to be sent out in mid-July and A Level results are released in mid-August. If you receive your results and they meet the conditions of your Firm Choice then you don’t need to do anything else, your place is secured. If you aren’t going to meet the conditions of your Firm or Insurance Offers it’s still worth contacting them if you were close to the offer grade and asking if they will still accept you. If you weren’t holding any offers, you have the option of entering Clearing. This is the process where students are matched with institutions who still have places remaining, see www.ucas.com for more information.

Graduation Ceremony

The Graduation Ceremony in October is the highlight of the higher education year when hundreds of our students graduate from the College after successfully completing their study programmes in the summer. The day is formal but enjoyable and students process through the town in gowns and mortar boards to the ceremony in a local church. The event is attended by the Mayor and other local dignitaries and ends with an afternoon of entertainment, food and drink with family, friends and college staff.

The Foundation Degree includes a broad spectrum of art practises which vary from life drawing to ceramics and much more. Going from the Diploma to the Foundation Degree was a big jump but the tutors are always around when you need them; they are all practising artist with lots of experience which really helps. The one-to-one support I’ve experienced at Swindon College has been better than any other place I’ve studied. The facilities here are really good; the library is full of art resources and the HE room is a great place to go, away from younger students. The Fine Art department, located in a new building, offers an expansive cultural studies programme enjoying opportunities to travel both nationally and internationally. “I left school after completing my GCSEs and started Level 1 Hairdressing. I didn’t feel like the course was for me, so went on to do the Level 2 Beauty Therapy which went well and really boosted my confidence. By the time I’d finished Level 2 I knew Beauty Therapy was what I wanted to carry on doing so moved on to the Level 3, then moved up to the Level 4. I’d heard really good things about Level 4 from friends who had already completed it so I was really excited to start. This course will give me more opportunities due to having a wider skills base and will make me more employable. The tutors here are really nice, they’ll help you and support you if there is anything that you don’t understand and take time out to explain everything clearly. When the course started we were able to practise treatments on each other to build confidence before the paying clients come in. It’s a really professional environment but clients are understanding if you’re nervous. Once I’m qualified I’d like to work for a laser clinic and work my way up to management. In the future I’d like to own my own salon. Swindon College is a really safe and comfortable place to be, I’ll be really sad to leave.”

Careers in Hairdressing Owning your own business is an achievable goal in the hairdressing industry. Former students of Swindon College own many of the successful salons in and around Swindon. Past students are also working as technical demonstrators for large manufacturing companies, such as Wella, L’Oreal, Schwarzkopf and Matrix. Some have travelled the world on cruise liners, or worked with hotel chains in ski resorts and exotic locations. The most enterprising are now working with famous celebrities in the media arts of television and theatre, or working with photographers for fashion magazines. Course Information:

The course is designed for practitioners currently working in early years settings who wish to build upon the practical work they undertake in their role, broadening their knowledge of wider practice in early years and gaining knowledge of the underpinning theory which supports practice today. Students will examine theories of child development, play and learning (including the role of the adult) and appreciating international and cultural perspectives. The course aims to develop the student’s professionalism through greater understanding of policy, regulatory and legislative frameworks and recognising the role of other agencies in working for and with children and families.

I really love the course, it is hard work and does take a lot of commitment but I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone; it’s been really enjoyable and everybody else on the course is so friendly. Sports Therapy | Charlotte Levick “Before starting Swindon College I was at a local sixth form studying Double BTEC Sports and ICT. I found the Foundation Degree though UCAS and had some good recommendations from people I knew that had been to Swindon College. It’s cheaper for me to commute to Swindon three days a week, than it would be to go away for university. We get a lot more time with lecturers studying at a college, than we would going to a university. I’m constantly improving whilst doing the course and really enjoying taking part in the practical side of the course; the tutors are amazing, they make lessons, resources and presentations available to us online. We hold a clinic on campus once a week, where we are able to treat real clients, supervised by a tutor or third year student.
