What is Higher Education? Higher education encompasses a diverse range of courses and qualifications such as Masters and Honours degrees, Foundation degrees, Higher National Diplomas and Certificates as well as professional qualifications. The term ‘higher education’ includes all university-level education at Level 4 or above and involves studying for a degree or similar advanced qualification. All courses at Level 3 or below are classed as further education. Higher education is open to students usually aged over 18 – there is no upper age limit!

Swindon College Swindon College is one of the largest higher education providers in Wiltshire and has successfully been delivering higher education qualifications in Swindon since 1904.

Facilities... Learning Resource Centre

The campus boasts a stunning Learning Resource Centre (LRC). The centre is a great environment in which to study and incorporates a library, study centres and a quiet space. The library houses over 32,000 books as well as journals, newspapers, videos, DVDs and reference materials. Internet access and extensive online research resources are available on all LRC computers. Users with visual impairment and other specific needs will find a range of specialist software and equipment available. HE students can access the HE Student Centre at any time during the college day to study and socialise with friends. The Centre has a 42” Each curriculum area also has its own Learning Advisor, who will be your plasma TV in the chill-out area with comfy sofas and chairs to relax, a point of contact for any enquiries or training you need. WiFi internet seating area with a vending machine, an internet café style-area with PCs, connectivity is also available across the campus. plus an adjoining computer suite.

On campus On-campus facilities include a large refectory (food hall), an express food shop, coffee shop, a professional training restaurant, hairdressing and beauty therapy salons and a sports therapy clinic; all of which are available to students at reduced rates. We are also located next door to the Oasis Leisure Centre which offers sports and activities in addition to the college’s own programmes. Facilities include a lagoon swimming pool, gym, eight court sports hall, indoor bowling, four outdoor pitches, squash courts and a café bar, as well as being one of Swindon’s main concert venues.

WHY PAY MORE? Our fees are considerably lower than those you would pay at university. HE programmes entitle you to a Student Loan or 24 + Advanced Learning Loan which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 per year (see page 14 for more details).

We have our own dedicated HE Centre where you can go for some quiet time or to study; there are computers available and facilities that will enable you to use your own laptop. Just around the corner is our HE Team, who are there to support you throughout your studies.

TIMELINE FOR UCAS February-July RESEARCH Make sure you research your options carefully. Try and visit university and college Open Days which will help you decide what and where you would really like to study. Also ensure you can meet the entry requirements. June – January APPLYING Applications are made to UCAS during this period and are submitted online. The Swindon College Careers Team will help you with your application and with writing your personal statement, which is the most important part. Mid-October This is the deadline for applications to Oxford, Cambridge and all Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary choices (but not Nursing). Mid-December By this time you should have paid your fee to UCAS and submitted your finished application to the Careers Team at Swindon College if you are an existing student. This allows four weeks for us to check your application and to write your reference. Although this is not the deadline, the sooner you can get your application in the better! Mid-January This is the deadline for UCAS to receive your application. If you have applied via the Careers Team by the mid-December deadline, they will send your application off for you to meet this deadline. If you miss this deadline, you can still apply - contact us for advice. You should apply for your Student Loan as soon as the process opens in January. Don’t wait until you have received any offers as this could delay your Loans. There are two available, one to pay your Tuition Fee and one to help with living expenses while you are studying. January-May OFFERS AND ACCEPTANCE This is when universities and colleges will generally make decisions on applications and send out offers to applicants. When you have received all of your offers, you will need to make one of them your Firm Offer (the one you want most) and make one an Insurance Offer (a back-up choice in case you don’t meet the requirements for your Firm Offer). Don’t miss the date to respond or your choices will be cancelled. It is also important during this time to find out about any financial assistance which might be available to you as a student. This includes bursaries, which are grants from your university or college which don’t have to be paid back. July-August RESULTS BTEC results start to be sent out in mid-July and A Level results are released in mid-August. If you receive your results and they meet the conditions of your Firm Choice then you don’t need to do anything else - your place is secured. If you aren’t going to meet the conditions of your Firm or Insurance Offers, it’s still worth contacting your first choice if you were close to the offer grade, and asking if they will still accept you, otherwise you automatically get your Insurance choice if you have met their entry requirements. If you weren’t holding any offers, you have the option of entering Clearing. This is the process where students are matched with institutions that still have places remaining, see www.ucas.com for more information.

Your Finances... Study now, pay later

You don’t have to pay for your course upfront You can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fee, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 per year (eligibility criteria apply*) You repay 9% of your income above £21,000 only. So, for example, if your salary was £25,000, the 9% would only apply to £4,000, meaning you would repay £30 per month If your salary falls below £21,000 - for example, if you take a career break or are unemployed, your repayments stop. Repayments only start again when you are earning over £21,000 again If you have not repaid your loan after 30 years it is written off.

If you’re studying full time, the main sources of help are: Student loans and grants from the government - eligible students can get help with tuition fees and living costs through student loans Bursaries (which don’t have to be paid back) from your university or college.

*To be eligible for a student loan you must be a UK passport holder, residing in the UK for more than 3 years and not have studied at the same level in Higher Education before. You’ll be able to take out two student loans per academic year: A Tuition Fee Loan - to cover your annual tuition fees in full A Maintenance Loan - to help with accommodation and other living costs (how much you get will depend on your household income). When you are assessed for your fees you are automatically assessed for a Student Loan. How we support you... We have a friendly and highly supportive environment at the College where students benefit from small group sizes and an effective personal tutorial system. All students have access to student email and the college’s Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle, where they can liaise with tutors and fellow students, as well as access work and lesson notes remotely. Degree students can also access their university’s online resources and facilities.

Accommodation

If you need accommodation during your time at Swindon College, our Accommodation Officer can offer advice and information. We do not have college halls of residence but we keep a list of privately-owned accommodation suitable for student occupation. The average price (based on academic year 2013/14) is £60/week for self-catering and £75/week for half-board. Swindon College does not inspect or specifically endorse any of the properties on the list, but all student houses are regularly checked for health & safety standards by Swindon Borough Council, and are not included unless they have passed regulation requirements. Learning Support

We offer support to students with specific learning differences, including: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Sensory Impairments, Mental Health and Physical Disabilities. This support is funded through the Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). To qualify for a DSA you will need an assessment that identifies a Specific Learning Difficulty. We can arrange this for you at the College. In the case of other impairments medical certificates are required. You will need to fill in the DSA form which can be downloaded from www.direct.gov. uk/studentfinance. This is then posted to Student Finance England with supporting evidence. The DSA is not means-tested. If agreed, a Needs Assessment will identify what supportive technology and learning support is recommended.

Graduation Ceremony The Graduation Ceremony in October is the highlight of the higher education year when hundreds of our students graduate from the College after successfully completing their study programmes in the summer. The day is formal but enjoyable and students process through the town in gowns and mortar boards to the ceremony in a local church. The event is attended by the Mayor and other local dignitaries and ends with an afternoon of entertainment, food and drink with family, friends and college staff.

With Swindon’s extensive travel links you’re always a short distance away from a town or city of your choice. Bath, Bristol, London, Reading, Oxford, Marlborough, the Cotswolds and Gloucester are just a short distance away!

If sport is your passion, Swindon has something for you. Our nationally famous sports teams could provide the perfect day out. Swindon Town Football Club, Wildcats Ice Hockey or Swindon Robins Speedway Team, who will you be supporting?

Swindon town centre and retail parks are forever developing. Most recently the Designer Outlet Village received a £35m redevelopment to add 30 more retail units and the redevelopment of the old Swindon College site at Regent Circus, which is now home to shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Minimum age 19. Mature students (aged 19 and over) without formal qualifications, who have a portfolio of creative artwork will be considered. Potential students without artwork, or work not of the required standard, may be asked to produce a sketchbook of work prior to commencement of the course.

Course Information: The Access to HE Art and Design Course is designed to re-introduce students aged 19+ to Art and Design practice who wish to prepare for progression into Art and Design

BA (Hons) Illustration | Ben Qureshi Prior to starting the course at Swindon College, Ben was living in Sheffield for three years, writing and performing stand-up comedy. He chose to come to the College to do his degree as it was one of the few institutions in the country that offered the course with the content he was looking for. Ben says: “The tutors are amazing, they have a great enthusiasm and work ethic; nothing is taken for granted. Course Information: The course is designed for practitioners currently working in early years settings who wish to build upon the practical work they undertake in their role, broadening their knowledge of wider practice in early years and gaining knowledge of the underpinning theory which supports practice today. Students will examine theories of child development, play and learning (including the role of the adult) and appreciating international and cultural perspectives. The course aims to develop the student’s professionalism through greater understanding of policy, regulatory and legislative frameworks and recognising the role of other agencies in working for and with children and families. The programme is delivered using a variety of techniques including lectures, seminars, and workshops and is supported by web-based materials.

Early Childhood Studies This programme is awarded by Oxford Brookes University and delivered by Swindon College Entry Requirements: Students will have successfully completed the Foundation Degree in Early Years or equivalent Level 5 sector-endorsed qualification, with a minimum average grade profile of at least 55%. In all cases, consideration will be given to the applicantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential to progress to Honours level. Katie has been working as a Teaching Assistant for 13 years and is currently working at a pre-prep independent school, Katie started this course as part of her journey to becoming a Primary School Teacher. Katie says: “I’m getting on really well with the course, the lecturers are lovely and really supportive. They each have a diverse range of skills and have previously worked as teachers, in nurseries, or even completed this course themselves.” “As our lectures are taught at a college our class sizes are smaller, we’re treated as individuals and it’s really easy to contact lecturers if we need to.” “I work full time and attend university on day release, what I learn during lessons can be taken into the workplace the next day and vice versa.
