Higher Education

What is Higher Education? Higher education encompasses a diverse range of courses and qualifications such as Masters and Honours degrees, Foundation degrees, Higher National Diplomas and Certificates as well as professional qualifications.

Higher Education:

• Will improve your career and earning potential, as well as allow you to gain specialist knowledge in an area which really interests you. • Can offer a vocational programme that is directly related to particular work areas such as accountancy, sports science or teaching. • Is essential for some careers, including chartered engineering and architecture.

• Will bring together students from a variety of backgrounds. This interaction can enrich the learning process through sharing experience and knowledge.

Swindon College

Swindon College is one of the largest higher education providers in Wiltshire and has successfully been delivering higher education qualifications in Swindon since1902.

Assured quality

‘‘

The term ‘higher education’ includes all university-level education at Level 4 or above and involves studying for a degree or similar advanced qualification. All courses at Level 3 or below are classed as further education. Higher education is open to learners usually aged over 18 – there is no upper age limit!

A recent review by the Quality Assurance Agency of the College’s HE provision had an excellent outcome, showing full confidence in the College’s academic standards and quality of learning opportunities. The report also noted many areas of good practice.

Application Process

A step-by-step guide to applying through... Remember that it is important to do your research before applying to Higher Education. Make sure that you meet the entry requirements of your chosen courses and that you have visited the institution to make sure you feel comfortable before accepting an offer. February-July Research

Make sure you research your options carefully. Try and visit university and college Open Days which will help you decide what and where you would really like to study. Also ensure you can meet the entry requirements.

SeptemberJanuary Applying

Applications are made to UCAS during this period and are submitted online. The Swindon College IAG Team will help you with your application and with writing your personal statement, which is the most important part.

Mid-October

This is the deadline for applications to Oxford, Cambridge and all Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary choices (but not Nursing).

Mid-December

By this time you should have paid your fee to UCAS and submitted your finished application to the IAG Team at Swindon College. This allows four weeks for us to check your application and to write your reference. Although this is not the deadline, the sooner you can get your application in the better!

Mid-January

This is the deadline for UCAS to receive your application. If you have applied via the IAG Team by the mid-December deadline, they will send your application off for you to meet this deadline. You should apply for your Student Loan as soon as the process opens in January. Don’t wait until you have received any offers as this could delay your Loans. There are two available, one to pay your Tuition Fee and one to help with living expenses while you are studying. Visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information.

January-May Offers and Acceptance

This is when universities and colleges will make decisions on applications and send out offers to applicants. When you have received all of your offers, you will need to make one of them your Firm Offer (the one you most want) and make one an Insurance Offer (a back-up choice in case you don’t meet the requirements for your Firm Offer). Don’t miss the date to respond or your choices will be cancelled. It is also important during this time to find out about any financial assistance which might be available to you as a student. This includes bursaries, which are grants from your university or college which don’t have to be paid back.

July-August Results

BTEC results start to be sent out in mid-July and A Level results are released in mid-August. If you receive your results and they meet the conditions of your Firm Choice then you don’t need to do anything else, your place is secured. If you aren’t going to meet the conditions of your Firm or Insurance Offers it’s still worth contacting them if you were close to the offer grade and asking if they will still accept you. If you weren’t holding any offers, you have the option of entering Clearing. This is the process where students are matched with institutions who still have places remaining, see www.ucas.com for more information.

Finance

Your Finances...

No upfront costs on HNDs, Foundation Degrees and Degrees

• You don’t have to pay for your course yourself upfront if you are applying for one of the above courses • You can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fee, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 per year • You repay 9% of your income above £21,000 only. So, for example, if your salary was £25,000, the 9% would only apply to £4,000, meaning you would repay £30 per month • If your salary falls below £21,000 – for example if you take a career break or are unemployed – your repayments stop. Repayments only start again when you are earning over £21,000 again • If you have not repaid your loan after 30 years it is written off.

Financial Information

If you are a new student you need to visit the Student Finance government web site: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. This web site is also the best source of information for all student finance enquiries. Full Time Students

If you’re studying full time, the main sources of help are: • Student loans and grants from the government - All eligible students can get help with tuition fees and living costs through studentloans • Bursaries (which don’t have to be paid back) from your university or college.

You’ll be able to take out two student loans per academic year:

• A Tuition Fee Loan - to cover your annual tuition fees in full • A Maintenance Loan - to help with accommodation and other living costs (how much you get will depend on your household income). When you are assessed for your fees you are automatically assessed for a Student Loan. If you are paying your own tuition fees, an instalment plan can be arranged by contacting Swindon College Student Finance on Tel: (01793) 498338 or email: studentfinance@swindon-college.ac.uk.

Part Time Students

Part time students can apply for a reduced Tuition Fee Loan at the following web site: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

To find out more: Telephone 0800 731 2250 | email studentservices@swindon-college.ac.uk | www.swindon-college.ac.uk

Finance

Bursaries & Scholarships

Bursaries are in addition to student loans and do not have to be repaid. Institutions in England must offer at least a minimum bursary payment if you’re paying maximum tuition fees and getting the full Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant (which all students are eligible to apply for). Universities offer various Scholarships, see the Finance Contacts section below for web site and contact details.

Part Time Students

The main sources of financial help for part time students are usually different from those available to full time students. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply for part-time Tuition Fee and Course Grants. How much you can get depends on your household income and personal circumstances.

Access to Learning Fund

Extra help

You can apply for help with childcare costs and exceptional travel costs. However, this is not available unless you have applied for the part time grant.

Access to Learning Fund

Successful applicants will normally have a good honours degree in Fine Art. Applicants with qualifications in related disciplines and those without formal academic qualifications might also be considered, providing they can provide evidence of relevant experience and a level of work appropriate to the academic demands of the programme. Candidates will be selected after presentation of a portfolio at interview, and admissions tutors will decide selection on the basis of the candidate’s ability to benefit from the programme. Applicants must be able to prove an academic fluency with the English language. This will normally be acquisition of a recognised EFL qualification for overseas candidates.

Course Information: The programme aims to make a contribution to the strengthening position of Fine Art Drawing as a major component of visual art production, promoting the language of drawing as a broad, experimental code that underpins so much of contemporary Fine Art practice and research. Students will be invited to re-evaluate their practice through studio investigation and critical analysis, considering the context in which the work is made and how the work operates both conceptually and contextually.

The nature of research will focus on individual study proposals and studio practice, and will invite investigation into the boundaries between drawing and a broad range of Fine Art disciplines from traditional works on paper to painting, printmaking, three-dimensional or combined media work and digital technologies. Study will culminate in a major body of work at the MA end of year show.

Progression Opportunities: Successful graduates will obtain a Master of Arts in Fine Art: Drawing for Fine Art Practice from Oxford Brookes University.

Years. I am now studying on the top-up BA course to gain a full Honours degree. I chose Swindon College as it was the best local option and has an excellent reputation for good grades. My workplace also recommended it. I am really enjoying my degree; the tutors are very approachable and always offer out of class support when we need it. I’ve also made a lot of good friends during my time at college; we’re all like-minded people who love our subject and the challenge that studying offers. I work full time in a local pre-school and have a busy family home, so I tend to do my college work mostly at weekends. It is a juggle but if you have a time management plan you can do it!’

‘I studied Sociology and Health & Social Care at 6th Form for one year. After speaking to a friend who already studied Childcare at Swindon College, she said the course here was really good and offered a lot of good work experience, so I came to talk to the tutors and enrolled on Level 3 in Childcare. I really enjoyed that experience and decided I wanted to enrol on the Foundation Degree in Early Years. The course has been great, the tutors are very helpful and supportive and I study one day a week in college while working three days a week in a nursery. I love working with children in the week and I’ve made good friends on the course; we have shared interests so it’s good to be working with them in a group. My plans are to apply for the top-up year here at Swindon College to gain a full Honours degree before gaining my PGCE and becoming a teacher.’

‘I left school at 16 with pretty good O Levels and then tried A Levels and a couple of evening courses but they didn’t feel quite right. But I then studied for Level 2 and 3 in Counselling which was brilliant. While my daughter was very young I found a Foundation Degree course at Swindon College which meant I could really consolidate my previous experience with a degree-level qualification and now I am studying on the Honours degree top-up year. When I initially started this journey I thought it would be about improving my career prospects but actually it has been about developing myself and my skills; I feel lucky to have had this opportunity. I feel really proud of what I’ve achieved personally. As a mum of three I couldn’t have gone away to study at university. Studying at degree level has changed me as a person; it offers a much wider experience than just education. I am challenging myself in so many new ways and I would definitely recommend it as an experience.

The qualifications I’ve gained have definitely helped me to achieve success in my career. I started on an NVQ3 in Teaching and Learning and then enrolled on the Foundation Degree to support my role as a TA. The tutors here are outstanding in terms of their knowledge and support.
