O

nce again planet Earth has completed another orbit around the sun, leaving us with the nagging feeling that we should do something to enrich our otherwise worthless existences before it does it again. Yes, it’s a new year and time for New Year’s resolutions – but this time you have your iPhone as a constant reminder and aid on the road to a new you.

’Appy New Year

To help shape the new you we’ve chosen apps to their fullest potential – and employ a little willpower – you should be able to change your lifestyle for the better: looking (possibly) and more attractive to the opposite sex (not guaranteed).

No pain, no gain

This highly-rated app provides a huge library of exercises, split between different types or muscle groups and accessed in various ways, including a human diagram where you can specify the individual muscle groups you want to work on. >

#2 Keep a journal

DAY ONE –– Heartbeats JOURNAL Bloom Built, LLC PRICE $4.99 £2.99 SIZE 30.9 MB VERSION 1.9.2

Y

ou may already share your day-today life via Twitter or Facebook, but sometimes it’s better to keep a private journal of your thoughts and experiences, away from prying eyes. >

It’s supposedly therapeutic to keep track of experiences and ideas, but it’s also a good way of seeing how busy your life is – if you don’t have much to write, you need to get out and do more! >

Day One’s interface is clean and uncluttered

>

The calendar is an easy way to keep track of your entries

>

Day One is fairly minimalist, but that’s it’s strength: it’s not overcomplicated and lets you get your thoughts down quickly. You can add a new photo to the entry or choose one from your library or Photo Stream – the app then asks if you want to change the time and location to that of the photo, which is a nice touch (although you can only add one photo per entry). You can also add tags to your entries for searching, and star your favorites.

Back to the Mac

Entries are synced via iCloud and Dropbox, and if you also buy the Mac OS X app ($9.99, £6.99), you’ll have access to your journal whether you’re at home on your desktop or laptop, or out on the road with your iPhone or iPad. >

Photos are dated so you have a visual reminder of events

>

There are a few niggles: entries are passcoded, but not encrypted and it’s easy app like Text Edit. Fortunately encryption is on the developer’s to-do list. Also, there are no feeds from Twitter or Facebook, which would automatically populate your entries – so if you’re a heavy social media user, you might prefer to try journaling with Momento instead ($2.99, £1.49). • Simple and easy to use • Syncs with iCloud and Dropbox • Journal entries not encrypted • No social media feeds
