iPHONE 5C & 5S UNVEILED AT LAST

S

o, after months of speculation and rumor – much of which turned out to be accurate – Apple finally unleashed its two new iPhones: the spec-bumped 5S, and its cheerfully colorful iPhone 5C. Due to a few last-minute leaks, we already knew that Apple had three different styles of iPhone 5S, now in Gold, Silver and Space Grey. However, what we didn’t >

know was that the device would feature a 64-bit processor – the new A7 chip. This makes it the world’s first 64-bit phone, and according to Apple, is twice as fast as the iPhone 5, and a massive 56 times more powerful than the original iPhone, released in 2007. >

The 5S is available in Silver, Gold and space gray

64-bit processors are normally a bit faster than their 32-bit predecessors, but the main advantage is their ability to process huge amounts of information, such as high-definition images and video, complex security algorithms, or graphically-intensive videogames. This was borne out by Epic showing off Infinity Blade 3, which looked pretty impressive. >

I

t’s a measure of how rapidly technology evolves that video, once confined to massive, heavy television sets, is now available to you on a device that fits in your pocket. On iOS, Apple provides its own Videos app for playing your movies and TV shows – although only ones > within the iTunes ecosystem.

You can stream from iTunes libraries on your local network

The app is fine but fairly basic. You get a list of all the videos stored on your device, categorised by type (movies, TV shows, podcasts), and can also access shared libraries on your local network. This is handy if you’re at home, because you can watch videos without syncing them – and video is notoriously space-hungry. >

Videos relies on iTunes content. Naturally, a store link is built in

Apple’s app supports AirPlay (albeit only via mirroring), making it possible to send video to an Apple TV. Naturally, there’s also a link to the iTunes Store, so you can spend all your money on new content. But there are alternatives to Apple’s app that cast a wider net. None work well with content bought from iTunes, but all enable you to watch video formats not supported by iTunes or even traditionally by iOS, such as AVI and MKV. >

the money, you may question its worth. But the fact is, once the initial novelty of controlling the colorful critter around obstacles in your home has worn off, there’s still a world of entertainment to be had and likely even more to come.

Shake and wake

Let’s get the basics out of the way first. Unpack Sphero 2.0 and you’ll find the device itself, an inductive charging dock and a couple of ramps, which we’ll talk about later. We needed to charge our review model for an hour or so before first use, and then had a little trouble waking the ball up. the rugged robot and after a hearty shake, the lights came on. Pairing is as easy as connecting any Bluetooth device to your iPhone. And the visual feedback provided by Sphero helps speed the process along until you’re ready to begin playing by downloading the free Sphero app. >

HOW-TO HOW TO USE AIRPLAY

Q & A YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

AIRPLAY

BECOME AN INSTANT EXPERT

A

irPlay is Apple’s technology for wirelessly streaming media. Using AirPlay, you can send music, videos and more from iOS devices to compatible receivers in your home. The most popular AirPlay receiver is the Apple TV, a tiny puck-like device that plugs into your television via an HDMI lead. There are also audio-only speaker systems that are AirPlay-compatible. >

Getting started with AirPlay is simple. First, ensure your devices are all on the same Wi-Fi network. Next, launch the Music app and start playing a song. The AirPlay button is at the bottom-right of the screen and looks like this: . Tap it and you’ll see destinations where you can send your media. Select one (such as ‘Apple TV’) and, after a short pause, your media will automatically stream to your chosen destination, until you return, press the AirPlay button again and set the output as your iOS device. >

The same process can be used to send photos to your television via an Apple TV (using the Photos app), and also video. You’ll see the AirPlay button in many video apps, including Safari and YouTube. Send video to an Apple TV

In some cases, apps don’t provide such a button – one example being Netflix. However, if you’ve reasonably new Apple kit (at least second-gen Apple TV and iPhone 4S/iPad 2/iPad mini/iPod touch 5th-gen), you can take advantage of AirPlay Mirroring. >
