5C & 5S WHAT’S IN A NAME?

W

ith September not far away, the rumors surrounding the next iPhone continue to swirl. It seems that predictions are becoming a little more concrete though. Japanese-based blog Macotakara has a report that Apple will be releasing two new phones in September – one called the 5S, the usual, incremental update to the iPhone 5, and a new model called the 5C. The latter would be the brand new so-called ‘budget’ iPhone. >

As we reported last issue, packaging had been found bearing the 5C moniker. Industry watchers believe that the C stands for ‘color’ as the phone is believed to come in a variety of shades. New images purporting to be of the iPhone 5C’s volume and ringer on/off buttons have also surfaced, showing plastic button in blue, green, yellow and red. >

The Macotakara report also goes on to claim that the 5S will also come in a new color – gold! This would be quite a departure from just the black and white models that have previously been released and, frankly, this is one rumor we just don’t see happening. >

CALENDAR APPS Replace Apple’s default apps with our pick of the best alternatives

O

ne of the best things about modern ecosystems is their ability to sync important data across multiple devices. This is especially true for data that enables you to more easily organize your time, such as calendars. With recent versions of iOS and OS X, Apple makes it simple to access this data across all of your devices via iCloud and Calendar. >

The Add Event dialog is clear, but feels old-hat

On the iPhone, Calendar is a decent app. You get list, day and month views from the app’s toolbar, and can access a weekly schedule by switching into landscape mode. There’s also a straightforward Add Event dialog box that isn’t pretty but is nonetheless usable. However, the app feels dated and compares poorly to its iPad sibling, which gives you more useful views, including a superior day planner and a year overview. >

Day view provides a simple overview of a day’s tasks

In iOS 7, Calendar is set for a major revamp. The interface will become pure and type-led, and you’ll have access to a new year view and infinite scrolling in other views. It looks great, but in the meantime there are already apps that give you the future of iPhone calendaring today, integrating with your existing iCloud data. >

illed as the ‘world’s first removable power solution for your iPhone 5’, the Mojo Refuel is a two-part

unit, consisting of a matte plastic battery housing and a plastic bumper (the box actually comes with two soft-touch bumpers, one red and one silver). The iPhone clips into the battery, and then the bumper clips on to that, keeping the phone in place and its edges protected. However, the bumper feels quite snappable, so we’re not sure just how much protection it offers. Also, the molded pattern around the edge is a bit ostentatious for our tastes.

probably good for as long as your iPhone keeps working. The back of the case simply slides off, allowing you to snap in a replacement; the cover then slips back on again and is quite secure. All in all it’s a very neat and eco-friendly piece of kit. Weirdly, the unit connects to the iPhone using the Lightning connector, but then iBattz provides a micro-USB port for charging.
