THE CONTRIBUTORS SALLY HINCKS, JOURNALIST started journalism with the old Daily News in Perth and continues to work on WA’s rural weekly newspapers, Farm Weekly and the Countryman. “It is the best work in the world – you’re meeting people and writing their stories.” She has four gorgeous grandchildren.

LISA FERNANDEZ, RADIO ANNOUNCER is a Perth girl who is currently doing the breakfast show on 92.9 FM with Basil Zempilas and Sam Mac. As a mother, Lisa wants to nurture, encourage, teach, inspire and give my love unconditionally... “because the reward is so incredibly great”.

MHAIRI FLAY, FEATURE WRITER has worked in marketing and advertising for 11 years, and although currently on maternity leave, loves her position as Marketing Manager for Channel 9.

JENNIFER BLACK, TRAVEL WRITER was an Award Winning Travel Manager for Flight Centre and Harvey World Travel for 10 years. After years of personal travel experiences and now with two young boys in tow, Jennifer writes about ‘Family’ Travel - where to go and how to get there with minimum stress!

JOHANNA GARNETT, FOOD & NUTRITION is the owner of JVG Events and created Yum In My Tum, which is the only food festival dedicated to children in Australia. Yum In My Tum is devoted to educating children on growing, cooking and tasting food.

ARI O’CONNELL, COLUMNIST has had work published in Australia, Japan and England, and is currently completing her first novel as part of a PhD project. Ari and her husband are expecting their first baby at the time of print.

ANNIE BOURGAULT, JOURNALIST worked for 10 years in radio and TV in Canada. Now, a mother, she loves discovering and sharing new stories about ordinary people becoming extraordinary parents.

DEVON PLUMLEY, MIDWIFE believes her work is most satisfying when she can empower a woman and her partner to birth their baby naturally; and the new little human being thanks his mummy with a squeal!

EMMA SAURUS, RESEARCHER/ WRITER Before motherhood, Emma was an editor of academic books and journals. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Publishing, a two-year-old son, and “a really messy house”.

AMY FRENCH, JOURNALIST majored in Journalism and Politics at Curtin University and recently completed her Masters in Communications at UWA. It’s a bit of a joke among her “parent” friends that Amy, who has no children, writes for Offspring; but they know she loves kids, as witnessed watching “Aunty Amy” playing with their beautiful children.

MARGARET ROBSON KETT, CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEWER has worked in public libraries in Victoria, WA and the US as a specialist children’s librarian for 30 years. She currently works for the State Library of WA’s Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program and has two teenage children who love books and stories.

BROOKE EVANS, JOURNALIST has written for home improvement, bridal and women’s lifestyle publications, but says Offspring enables her to combine writing with my new favourite hobby, being a mum to my beautiful baby boy, Caleb. She says she can think of nothing better than writing all day (and being paid for it!).

Editor’s Note Let’s face it, nowadays most of us need to continue working even when we have kids. We might get off for a year or two when they’re babies if we’re lucky, but then we’re back on the treadmill, juggling meetings, school runs and nappies. Costs of living are high and we generally want a lot for our families and ourselves – overseas holidays, plasma TVs, a range of outfits rather than perhaps one nice outfit, a good education for our children, a couple of cars (rather than one family car) and a nice house (which often more so resembles the homes in which our parents live now than perhaps they had when they were starting a family but, hey, we’ve got high expectations!). Of course this all needs to be paid for, and given that most people tend to marry for love rather than money, very few of we women get to swan around playing tennis and eating cucumber sandwiches! And nowadays, by the time we get around to having kids, we’ve already had a good dose of what it’s like to earn our own money, recognition and stimulation from following our own ambitions, and are not necessarily prepared to give all that up when it comes time to spawning the offspring. The modern mother wants it all: a family and her own life of some sort, just as men have traditionally had for a very long time. But how do we do that? Have our family, be there for them, and work? There’s a new breed of women out there who are indeed etching out a life for themselves that does involve the best of both worlds – they’re known as WAHMS (Working at Home Mums). These women are like most of us – have had some form of formal education and/or employment experience, are creative, keen to earn some cash for themselves and, most-importantly, are multi-tasking savvy! These are women who have discovered a niche business or creative pursuit and are developing it within the comfort of their own homes in between breast-feeding and mopping floors. Having children has unlocked their creativity and, drawing upon skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the

workforce prior to having children, they are rediscovering their talents whether it be sewing, designing, cooking, painting, taking photos or writing. In our editions to date we’ve covered the occasional WAHM story but in this issue we’re elevating it to a new status with both feature articles about Perth mothers who have constructed careers for themselves at home, while child rearing. Romelie Grayson, the talented designer behind the successful alex & charli children’s fashion label, and Rebecca Hall of Kidzabuzz have allowed us a glimpse into their family homes, from where their creations were cultivated. This issue showcases boutique items from more talented women, in a special feature on Perth Upmarket as well as our regular features including a hilarious recount of Ari’s experience as a “blossoming” pregnant woman. (A huge congrats to Ari who has recently given birth to a darling little boy, Gabriel.) LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I am enjoying the winter edition of your fab mag. Dixie Marshall article was a cool surprise and had good laughs from all the birthing articles. There is one article however, that has me a little puzzled and a little upset too - Perth mum Sperm Insemination. I am upset because it was not something that I thought I would read about in Offspring or a family magazine. What I read - a story promoting single parenthood - by choice! Undervaluation of fatherhood, and a total disregard of a future child’s right to grow up knowing about or having a relationship with his/her father or extended family, or even knowing if he/she has half siblings! ..to

do this on purpose....I do not understand. This article is out of place I think being in your mag, and it sounds like Donna or Ms Bright have vested interest in a fertility clinic or something like that. It really did read like a big fat advertisement to me. Is Donna Cheron part of your team? I don’t see her pictured as one of your contributors. The good news is now I have an idea for a future article - Fostering or Adoption in WA (there are children already born in this world that need love and care). Ta, and thanks for your magstill loving the glossy pages-and for free! (did not know it was a possibility). Anonymous

I love your magazine! I’m a home-birthing, extended breastfeeding, non-vaxxing, natural and crunchy mama and I must admit that the first time I picked up your magazine (Autumn edition) I was waiting with baited breath for something to make me shake my head in disbelief. And it didn’t happen! And then again, your winter edition was just as good – if not better! I love that your magazine is so incredibly unbiased and is something that a mainstream mum can read and learn from. Well done! I am mother of Jedd is 3yo, and Sage is 19mo whose favourite activities are painting and eating playdough! Thanks and keep up the great work, Alicia, Baldivis.

Born to Birth I was really inspired by your “born to birth” article. It was interesting to read about the process of labour and how she went through the stages of contractions. It put my mind at rest to read that labour could be handled at home for some time before needing a midwife. I had a lot of anxiety about labour and now I feel more relaxed that I may even be able to laugh through some of the first stages. Thanks so much. Kristy, Yokine, WA

I just wanted to offer my congratulations on Offspring - it is a truly unique and inspiring magazine. The first issue was enough to get me interested and the second issue, enough to get me hooked. Offering open information on vaccination is a really important issue, which mainstream media often shy away from, so I commend you for taking the stance to provide information about the pros and cons, which facilitates true informed consent and also allows us to push for more research. Home Birth is almost as controversial and your article on an actual experience was beautiful. As someone who always thought she would elect for caesarean section and ended having an incredible home water birth with an independent midwife, I can see how important providing stories on all birthing options, is crucial in empowering women. I love that you take an approach of judging nobody and accepting each the decisions that each family makes. Thank you! Gina Cacho, Applecross

with alex and Perth children’s fashion designer, Romelie Grayson, shares with us how she gets inspired to keep creating beautiful products, season after season, while maintaining a healthy balance between business and family.

12 Offspring | spring 2010

ROMELIE is an ordinary woman, yet she has an extraordinary imagination, which has guided and shaped her to become one of the country’s standout boutique children’s fashion designers. Romelie seems to have it all: three gorgeous girls and a thriving business, which she operates from her charming Mosman Park home. However, Romelie jokes that is wasn’t always so beautiful but it is easy to assume that, if she has injected as much effort into her alex and chali range, as she has into her home, she has the ability to transform a blank canvas into something truly magical. alex and charli is a fabulous children’s clothing range which was dreamt up six years ago when Romelie moved back to Australia from England and discovered her inner passion for fashion. As a former very good student with an inquisitive desire for art, she decided it was now or never. “I have always loved art, fabrics and fashion, and alex and chali was an opportunity to

explore that side, so I thought I would give it a go as I had nothing to lose,” she says. Since this seed of enthusiasm burst into a flower, Romelie has never looked back with her business continually growing, and it can only get better for this small town girl from Lesmurdie. As the girls run around her feet, Romelie’s mind searches for new concepts and designs for the range, which emulate childlike, ‘girly’ and fantastical themes. Romelie draws on her own childhood memories and, in particular children’s books for inspiration. “My philosophy is to keep children looking like children,” Romelie says. Her designs echo this notion with cute bunnies, bluebirds, ‘the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and the ‘Big Bad Wolf’. Romelie confides that she is a lover of colour and trimmings and gets particular joy from creating quirky designs and diverse trends. Furthermore, her home and ‘work shed’ are just as inspiring, as they provide escapism: a sanctuary in which she can concentrate on her work and from where she derives peace. Un-coincidentally perhaps, and similar to

All this, compounded with her regular attendance at art class, are vehicles which serve to stimulate her creativity. BUZZ BY KATE DURACK

Every now and again we stumble across a great product and might wonder to ourselves, “What a fabulous idea!” or better still, “Why didn’t I come up with that??” Meet one Perth woman who has indeed come up with a unique idea and developed it into a must-have resource for WA families – creator and owner of Kidzabuzz, Rebecca Hall.

From the Midwife with Devon Plumley RN, Dip Ed, MPH

My Poor Fanny, will it ever be the same again? Perineal Trauma and life after birth AS a midwife I have heard just about every conceivable comment about pregnancy, labour and birthing, the vagina, stitches, pooing... you name it, I’ve discussed it! There are no boundaries when it comes to birthing questions, nor the venue in which they are asked (birthday parties, bus stops and bars to name a few.) Pelvic floor and vaginal damage during pregnancy and birth tops many women’s (and their partners’) fear list and provokes many queries. Let me expel some of the myths and explain all you need to know when it comes to birth and your vagina.

Types of vaginal trauma There are four types of perineal tears that can occur during childbirth:

1 2 3 4

First degree tear - involves only the skin of the perineum and vagina and can be left un-stitched if not bleeding. Second degree tear - extends into the pelvic floor muscles - stitching is usually recommended. Third degree tear - involves the skin, muscle and external part of the anal sphincter. Fourth degree tear - involves all of the above and extends through the sphincter and rectal lining.

First and second degree tears can be stitched by a qualified midwife or doctor. Third and fourth degree tears occur very rarely and should be stitched by an experienced obstetric doctor.

Other damage that could occur Episiotomy - this involves a surgical cut through the perineum to facilitate a quicker birth in times of suspected baby distress or if you have been advised to have a vacuum or forceps birth. It is similar in severity to a second degree tear but has been known to extend further into the anal sphincter (3rd or 4th degree tear.) Grazes or small tears to the labia, urethral and clitoral region. These can usually be left un-stitched. Research supports naturally-occurring tears of the perineum over routine episiotomy, however, if episiotomy is required, your midwife or doctor will explain the procedure and rationale for its use, and of course will obtain your consent.

PREGNANCY & BIRTH

Post birth care of your vagina

Five facts about vaginal/perineal tears

1 2

Many women will obtain no vaginal tears during vaginal birth.

3 4

Many second (and third, forth, fifth) timers will not sustain any tears at all.

5

Approximately 70-80% of first timers will sustain some degree of damage, though not all require stitches.

The weight of the baby, uterus and amniotic fluid can cause weakened pelvic floor, urinary incontinence and sexual changes. This can therefore still occur whether you birth vaginally or via caesarean, which emphasises why pelvic floor exercises are vital! Research shows there is little that can be done to prevent vaginal tears during vaginal birth.

1

Ensure your midwife informs you of any little tear you may have sustained. Stitches dissolve, yet ask your midwife about the type of tear and healing time.

2

Regularly change your sanitary pads and wash regularly (this goes for vaginal and caesarean birth.) Thoroughly clean the stitches in the shower. The idea of touching them may seem strange but good hygiene practices will avoid you getting any infection.

3

Look at the stitches in the mirror. Know what everything looks like so that you can ensure things are healing well. You’ll be amazed how quickly everything goes back to normal.

4

Drink plenty of water and eat a diet high in fibre. This will keep your bowels soft and alleviate any fears you have of doing your first poo post birth.

5

As for sex, give yourself six weeks to allow time to heal.

Tips to Minimise Vaginal Trauma

1 2

Perform your pelvic floor exercises pre-birth to strengthen the muscles in preparation for pushing and post birth to hasten your vagina’s recovery to its prebirth state.

3 4 5 6 7

Eat well and don’t smoke! Good skin integrity is enhanced by good nutrition, a well-oxygenated body and good genes.

8

Research suggests that birth position has little effect on damage. However, lying on you left side is anecdotally associated with fewest tears, whereas birth stools are associated with a greater risk of tears. Ultimately, you should birth in the position most comfortable for you.

9

Consider perineum ‘stretching’ devices such as the ‘Epi-No’. This device is used antenatally to stretch the vagina and perineum. It claims to shorten the 2nd stage of labour and perineal tears. It can then be used post birth to re-strengthen the vagina.

10

Be relaxed about what you ultimately cannot control. Tears happen. It is no big deal, especially when your little miracle is lying against your breast for the first time. Allow your midwife to check for tears and if stitches are needed, concentrate on babe whilst the repair is being performed. Remember, vaginas are designed to stretch, sometimes do tear, and heal very quickly.

PREGNANCY & BIRTH

Top 10

There is evidence that perineal massage twice a week from 35 weeks pregnant reduces the risk of tears and need for episiotomy in first-timer mothers. Perineal massage in labour is not associated with fewer tears and may only cause discomfort.

Birth the baby’s head slowly! The slower the head is birthed, the more time the vagina and perineum have to stretch. Be guided by your body, instincts and your midwife. Use a mirror to watch the birth of the baby’s head. Because you can see everything stretching, you will be inclined to slowly control the birth of the head. Do not be afraid to look, it is an amazing sight to see! Birth baby into your own hands. This will also aid you to slowly guide baby’s head out.

Ask your midwife or doctor to press a warm or cool compress (depending on your preference) to your perineum whilst you are pushing. Many women feel this eases the stinging or burning sensation experienced during this stretching phase.

For our second I decided that we wouldn’t find out, but I think I instinctively knew that I was having a boy. Simone, mum of two “I was more than happy to wait until the birth to find out but my husband was adamant he wanted to find out. Between 20 weeks and 36 weeks I had three different scans, two in Kalgoorlie where we were living (with an older machine) and one in Perth with a brand spanking new machine. The two in Kalgoorlie told us a boy, the one in Perth told us our baby ‘looks more like’ a girl. Turns out the older, dodgy Kalgoorlie machine was the more accurate and this was confirmed finally at another ultrasound in Perth just before our son was born! So for the majority of my pregnancy we both had our way, knowing but then again not knowing what baby number two would be!”

Ma-an, mum of two “We found out the sex of both our babies mostly because I’m too impatient. I think we were just too excited that the thought of having to wait to find out if we were having a son or daughter and waiting to name them for 9 months was just too much for us!” (Ma-an, mum of two).

Amanda, mum of one “We didn’t find out when we had Tate as we both wanted to have a surprise after the painful labour, and when Tate was eventually born we actually forgot to ask. The midwife and the obstetrician didn’t say “Congratulations you have a beautiful healthy boy” like we expected – it took us about five minutes to ask what we had. I think that most people find out now so the doctors don’t think to let the new parents know. We are not sure what to do for the next one. I want to find out, but my hubby is keen for another surprise, so we’ll have to wait and see when the time comes.”

Developing Emotional Intelligence in Children Several major problems such as low selfesteem, family-induced stress, and stress from environmental inuences, depression, suicidal behaviour, eating disorders, teen pregnancy, HIV and violence threaten the emotional well-being of today’s youth. Vaccination BeneďŹ ts Outweigh Risk BY AMY FRENCH

When hundreds of children in WA suffered adverse reactions to the CSL flu vaccine earlier in the year, many parents were fearful to vaccinate their children against other diseases. Founding Director of the Telethon Institute for Children, and Australian of the Year in 2003, Fiona Stanley reassures Offspring that the science of vaccination is proven.

At the Telethon Institute’s recent seminar on vaccination, Dr Peter Richmond, the head of the Institute’s Vaccine Trials Group that tested the flu vaccine prior to its administration, said they were working very hard to work out what went wrong. Dr Richmond says that the reaction in children, where up to 9 in 1000 children suffered high fever and febrile convulsions, was a reaction to one particular brand of flu vaccine manufactured by pharmaceutical company CSL and there have been no similar reactions in children in New Zealand or Australia to any other brand of flu vaccine. According to Dr Richmond, in the USA, where over 2 million doses of flu vaccine were given to under

Busy parents put their trust in their GPs and organisations like the Telethon institute for Children to advise them on how to best care for their children and whether or not to vaccinate, and Professor Stanley assures me that this is how it should be.

Lydia Gallant, Russell Harvey and their three children are an excellent example of how vibrant family life can be even in the midst of extreme adversity. In 2005 they had been happily married for more then 10 years and had two beautiful healthy boys: Kaden, three, and Evan six months. Besides a few common childhood illnesses nothing had prepared them for what can only be described as any parent’s worst nightmare.

Russell and Lydia say that their son has improved immensely since starting CE at the age of two and that without the program, Evan’s ability to swallow for eating, vocalise for communicating, observe, move deliberately and even pat the cat would be highly limited. One would think that the mother of three who works as a freelancer in public relations and marketing would have enough on her plate already. However, a few years ago she decided to volunteer her help to Conductive Education Centre of WA (CECWA). To ensure its continuation she has assisted in growing the profile of CE and the charity, raising funds, and lobbying for greater Government support. The Gallant-Harvey family also finds the time to do a great number of activities together as a family and on an individual basis. The island is famous for its Little Penguins, Australian Sea Lions, New Zealand Fur Seals and Pelicans, which you see pretty well most places you go.
