SWITZERLAND

D O C U M E N TA RY

To follow my own brother and a group of athletes as they train and prepare for an upcoming international bodybuilding competition, and to go to the championship with them. To understand the path that led them to this activity. To film a quest that can lead you astray if you intend to find anything else but yourself. To offer an alternative perspective on a misunderstood discipline. To go beyond the explicit theme of the movie – bodybuilding – in order to bring out universal themes such as achievement and transcending one’s limits.

DIRTY GOLD WAR 48

DANIEL SCHWEIZER SWITZERLAND

D O C U M E N TA RY

The film seeks to identify the issues involved in gold extraction and commerce today. It presents both the militants fighting against a nebulous cartel and the actors involved in the network and the market of this sought-after metal. It is a journey behind the scenes of this highly prosperous activity: on one extreme, the glittering windows of jewellery shops and the luxury industry; on the other, the appalling conditions of those cursed by dirty gold. The film brings a new perspective to this business and contributes to the fight for more responsible ethics in the gold industry.

In the “Kunstgiesserei” in St. Gallen renowned artists – such as Urs Fischer, Katarina Fritsch, Peter Fischli, Mariana Castillio Deball, Paul McCarthy, Alex Hanimann and Hans Josephsohn – meet up with Felix Lehner, the charismatic founder of the art foundry. He and his crew translate ideas into sculptures with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm. Their success has led to the fact that some of the production phases had to be outsourced to Shanghai. The cultural and artisanal exchange with China is tremendously enriching. And regardless of whether in Shanghai or St. Gallen, the molten metal is spellbinding as it turns dreams into reality.

SAMIR SWITZERLAND / GERMANY / FRANCE

D O C U M E N TA RY

Bombs, war, angry bearded men, shrouded sobbing women, shattered cities: Iraq, as seen through the eyes of the western media these days. These images are juxtaposed with those from the fifties and seventies: films with frivolous music, unveiled women who study; elegantly dressed men in Bagdad, a modern city. How did it come to this? Film director Samir tells the story of his globalised middle-class Iraqi family, scattered between Auckland, Moscow, Paris, London and Buffalo, New York.

SAMIR Born in 1955 in Baghdad, Iraq. Attended Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich. Apprenticeship as a typographer. Trained as a cameraman. Since 1983 works as independent director and cameraman. Fleeing the crisis, unemployed European workers in search of job security flock to Switzerland each day. This winter in Lausanne, over 200 of them are searching desperately for a bed every night. In order to “limit the attractiveness” of the city for the homeless, the town council has decided to limit emergency capacity to 100 places. Each evening, those on duty at L’Abri, one of the three shelters, have the difficult task of “triaging the poor” in order to select those who will have a hot meal and a bed. Those turned away will wander the streets until the early hours, chilled to the bone in a city that would rather see them gone.

Expeditions to the heart of the country with the author Pedro Lenz, who lives above the Flügelrad Restaurant next to the railway station in Olten. An oscillating snapshot of the prevailing mood in Swiss society emerges from the interplay between stories of everyday life and Lenz’s reflective texts in Swiss dialect, replete with laconic poesy and a tinge of yearning.

MY NAME IS SALT 64

FARIDA PACHA SWITZERLAND

D O C U M E N TA RY

The desert extends endlessly. There is not a tree or blade of grass or rock. But there is one thing in abundance: salt, lying just beneath the baked surface of the earth. This is the Little Rann of Kutch, 5’000 square kilometers of saline desert in Gujarat, India. And for eight months of the year, 40’000 families live here without water, electricity or provisions – laboriously extracting salt from this desolate landscape. Every monsoon their salt fields are washed away, as the desert turns into sea. And still they will return, striving to make the whitest salt in the world.

Samba, together with football and beautiful woman, is what springs to mind when we think of Brazil. We wish to transcend such cliches and take Samba at its word, for what it is. And that is the great discovery of this film: that Samba cannot be reduced simply to dance and lascivious hip movements. Samba is also word, language, text, lyrics or simply said a way of life. The composer and singer Martinho da Vila is our charismatic Cicero, guiding us through the world of Samba, telling stories about his 45-year career, meet his Samba school in Rio de Janeiro, the Vila Isabel.

China copies, disregards intellectual property and exploits the creativity of others. This is one reality. The film tells of another as it journeys through the world of Chinese tinkerers and entrepreneurs, a world in which the philosophical concept of constant change holds true, where there is no standstill, no beginning and no end. The western notion of the sacrosanct original is irrelevant here. In Chinese start-ups, western opensource thinking conjoins with the concept of further development through imitation, resulting in an explosive mixture on a global level – thanks to the Internet.

CHRISTIAN FREI SWITZERLAND

D O C U M E N TA RY

Paralyzing, tormenting and overwhelming… Often laughed off as nothing more than an affliction of adolescence, lovesickness becomes the topic of a documentary film. The director and his cinematographer dive into the frenzied nights of the newly rejected. Nights full of pain and tears, yet also wakefulness and creativity. An anthropologist researches the astounding and profound processes that are unfolding in the brain of the lovesick. Has nature overdone it? The film explores the difficult path out of self-destructive obsessive behavior, toward a new self.

The filmmaker accompanied this venture and explores the aspirations and reality of Hirschhorn’s artistic work.

MATTHIAS VON GUNTEN SWITZERLAND

Two places at the edge of our planet are making headlines due to climate change: Thule, Greenland, because of record ice melts there; and Tuvalu, because this remote Pacific island nation is one of the first countries on the verge of sinking as a result of rising sea levels. Whereas for us the warming of the planet occurs almost solely in the media, it is changing the entire existence for the inhabitants of Thule and Tuvalu. The film portrays how they are forced to abandon their traditional way of life as they move towards an unknown future.

Or is it, according to the sociologist Eva Illouz or the author Sven Hillenkamp, actually at the end?
