In 1964, Jean Ziegler was asked by Che Guevara to fight the “capitalist Monster”. Former collborator of Kofi Annan, professor and writer, Ziegler’s books still act as a manifesto to left-wing intelligentsia. At the UN Human Rights Council, he fights against “vulture funds”, a new avatar of the “Monster”. He goes back to Cuba, in his opinion the mother of all anticapitalist forces. The visit becomes a dialogue between reality and symbolism, confronting his thinking with today’s Cuban destiny. What is the future of anticapitalism? Is Ziegler amongst the winners or losers against the “Monster”?

April 1942. The war seems far away in the small Swiss town of Payerne. Yet the local economy is weak, people are malcontent. The cafes are full of sinister characters. Garage owner Fernand Ischi and his men have sworn fealty to the Nazi Party. They dream of catching Adolf Hitler’s attention. On April 16, the next local cattle fair will take place and Arthur Bloch, a livestock dealer, will attend. That is the day a Jew will be killed as an example.

He has since directed numerous documentaries and fiction films and is especially known for his films A LOVING FATHER (2002) starring Gérard and Guillaume Depardieu and THAT DAY (2007). Cahier africain Heidi Specogna

* 1959 in Switzerland. Heidi Specogna worked as a journalist before studying film at the DFFB Berlin from 1982–88 and founded her own production company Specogna Film in 1990. Specogna is known for her award-winning documentaries CARTE BLANCHE (2011), THE GOALGETTER’S SHIP (2010) and THE SHORT LIFE OF JOSÉ ANTONIO GUTIERREZ (2006). She works as a lecturer in documentary filmmaking at the Film Academy BadenWürttemberg in Ludwigsburg.

It all started with a school exercise book. Its pages were checkered with the testimonies of 300 Central African women, girls and men. They reveal what Congolese mercenaries did to them. On their own initiative they gathered together their testimonies to record the crimes committed against them. The film is a long-term observation that begins accompanying its protagonists in 2008. But while they try to master their difficult daily lives with confidence – and while, in The Hague, the legal prosecution of crimes committed during the last war is still in progress – the next war breaks out.

When Eva Vitija came of age, her father gave her a feature-lenghth film about her life. It infuriated her, because she had attempted to get away from his camera all her childhood. Her father, filmmaker Joschy Scheidegger, documented his family obsessively. It was only when he died that Eva was impelled to take over not only his extensive film archive, but also his camera. Through her film the daughter gives her past back that element of intimacy that her father's camera seems to have stolen from her. A surprising and philosophical family story about the attempt to capture life. www.daslebendrehen.ch 22
