St. Petersburg 1917. The frontline of the global war is coming closer every day; people are hungry, worried, angry. In February the tsar is overthrown. Many artists are euphoric: Revolution! Freedom! Freedom, finally? Starting in October, the Bolsheviks rule by themselves. What were poets, thinkers, and avant-gardists like Maxim Gorky and Kazimir Malevich doing during this drastic change of power?

The film unfolds in Rio de Janeiro on both sides of the wall separating the new Olympic Stadium and the favéla Vila Autódromo. Nothing prevents the co-existence of these two worlds but some judge them “incompatible” including Rio’s Mayor. His wish to reclaim this area, reserved for Rio’s poor since the 1990s, sets off a lopsided power struggle as people with little means fight to keep their home.
When Jessy tells David she’s pregnant, he panics. A few days later the two are assaulted in the city train, and when David realises he is unable to protect his girlfriend, his fears of inadequacy as a man take hold. Frantic, he resorts to steroids and begins with excessive workouts. Initially, the muscles give him self-confidence. But within a short time, David develops erratic behaviour and becomes a threat to Jessy and the unborn child.

Nicolas Wagnières explored the building at different eras and questioned its former residents. The result is a singular space-time continuum projecting a form of collective unconscious and a share of the director’s identity.
