When Leila discovers at her sister Amanda’s wedding that the latter is pregnant, she promptly reveals the carefully guarded secret. While the guests are happy, Amanda worries about her career and Leila about her fertility. Panic-stricken, Leila sets herself a goal: get pregnant! So together with her friend Sophie she throws herself into the nightlife. Sophie is more concerned with the search for babysitters and probably won’t snatch a man from her.

NATASCHA BELLER * 1982. Natascha Beller studied Film at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and works as director and screenwriter for film and television. She’s known as co-writer for the Swiss Late Night Show “Deville” and also worked as author for the successful Swiss series DER BESTATTER. She wrote the screenplay for the TV drama ZWIESPALT (TORN) (2017), which received the main award at the TV film festival in Baden Baden. VAGENDA STORIES is her first feature-length film.

BASIL DA CUNHA * 1985. Basil da Cunha received his BA in Cinema at Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD – Genève) in 2012 and has been working as lecturer for the renowned film school since his gradu­ation. He is known for his award-winning shorts NEXT DOOR (2009), screened in Compe­tition in Locarno as well as for SUNFISH (2011) and THE LIVING ALSO CRY (2012) both presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes. His first feature AFTER THE NIGHT (2013) also premiered at the Quinzaine.

After eight years in a correctional school, Spira returns to Reboleira, a slum which is being demolished in the Lisbon suburbs. While he goes back to his friends and family, Kikas, one of the neighbourhood’s old drug dealers, makes it clear that he is not welcome.

KLAUDIA REYNICKE * 1976 in Peru. Klaudia Reynicke received her MA in Cinema from the ECAL/HEAD (École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne and Geneva School of Art and Design) in 2010. Her first documentary feature ¿ASI SON LOS HOMBRES? (2012) premiered at Visions du Réel in Nyon and won the Audience Award of the Festival Filmar en America Latina. Her first feature-length fiction film THE NEST (2016) was selected for the Concorso Cineasti del presente at the Locarno Film Festival and screened at the Mostra in São Paulo.

Seconda, 32 years old, is ready for anything to gain her freedom. Suffering from agoraphobia, she is incapable of leaving her home, but when she finally succeeds, she must face new challenges that push her limits even further. This assertive and tough anti-super heroine will do it in her own way.

When Muslims are shown in the media, they are portrayed as the bad guys. How then is it to be explained that every year, over a hundred Swiss people convert to Islam? David Vogel sets out to investigate this question in his film. The fact that he himself is Jewish doesn’t matter – or does it?

Fredi Melchior Murer, born 1940 in Switzerland, studied photography in Zurich. In 1967, strongly influenced by his youth in the rural canton of Uri, he starts working as an independent filmmaker and producer.

PARDO ALLA CARRIERA

The Locarno Film Festival pays tribute to the master of Swiss cinema, Fredi M. Murer, with the 2019 Pardo alla carriera and four not to be missed restored films.

Murer shoots his first feature film ZONES (GRAUZONE, 1979) which is ahead of its time. The highly acclaimed ALPINE FIRE (HÖHENFEUER, 1985) is his most radical film in terms of art and content. It won the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 1985. With VITUS (2006) he received the Swiss Film Award for Best Fiction Film. The film was a box office success in Swiss cinemas.

Fredi M. Murer’s works have significantly shaped the local film landscape and made him known far beyond the country’s borders.

A silent city, mysteriously devoid of inhabitants, is crossed by a man who has come from far. The anonymised architecture that composes the urban landscape guides the person into an inaccessible space, the city cemetery, making him reflect on his own identity. The film was born from the metaphysical suggestion of some architectural works by Aldo Rossi, in particular the modern extension of the San Cataldo Cemetery in Modena.

Temporality and age are inherent in every object and creature and, depending on one’s outlook, may transcend to infinity. Schaub explores, together with the architects Peter Zumthor, Peter Märkli and Alvaro Siza Vieira, the artists James Turrell and Cristina Iglesias and drummer virtuoso Jojo Mayer, the magic of sacred spaces, defined here as far more than church buildings. CARMEN STADLER * 1978. Carmen Stadler studied film at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and works as independent writer, director and editor. Her award-winning short NIGHTFLUTTERING (2006) screened at numerous festivals and received the Pardino d’oro at the Locarno Film Festival, the Zurich Film Prize and the Newcomer Award at the Solothurn Film Festival. She is known for her short REDUIT (2010), which also premiered within Pardi di domani in Locarno. SEKURITAS is her first feature.

RAMON ZÜRCHER * 1982. Ramon Zürcher studied Film at the DFFB in Berlin. His award-winning debut film THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT (2013) premiered at the Forum of the Berlinale and has been shown at numerous renowned festivals, such as TIFF, Festival de Cannes, Viennale and New Directors/New Films. On the edge of the Sahara, in Burkina Faso, the village of Kamsé is being destroyed by the effects of creeping desertification. To ensure the village’s survival, the villagers decided to embark on the planning of a perimeter. Armed with shovels and pickaxes, they will build dikes, plant hedges and trees to protect the soil from wind, gully erosion and herds of animals that grass on what little pasture manages to grow.

Zuchuat is known for his award-winning documentaries FAR FROM THE VILLAGE (2008) and LIKE LIONS OF STONE AT THE GATEWAY OF NIGHT (2012).
