* 1942 in Germany. Margarethe von Trotta is a German director and screenwriter who has been referred to as a “leading force” of the New German Cinema movement. Her films, which often centre around strong female protagonists and women in context of history, premiered at the most important film festivals. She is best-known for films such as MARIANNE & JULIANE (1981), I AM THE OTHER WOMAN (2006) and HANNA ARENDT (2012). In 2022 she received the European Cinema Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Plough is a constellation. It is also a puppet theatre. This is the story of a family of puppeteers: siblings Louis, Martha and Lena; their father, who directs the troop, and the grandmother, who makes the dolls. Together, they make up a company and put on puppet shows. One day, following a performance, the father dies of a stroke, leaving his children alone.

* 1948 in France. Philippe Garrel directed numerous short films in his youth before making his feature debut in 1968 with MARIE POUR MÉMOIRE. Four years later, he directed the celebrated cult film THE INNER SCAR (1972) with and about the rock icon Nico. His 25-plus feature films have screened and won prizes at the most prestigious international festivals.

Mojtaba, Hamzeh and Zar and others have been pressured in prison and ideologically interrogated in Iran at different times in their lives. The director asks them to interrogate him as an agent of the Islamic Republic might. He would like the real torturer in Iran to see himself through the film as if in a mirror. The violent experience of actually putting themselves in the head of the torturer confronts them with what they are willing to do and the limits of the project itself.

He continues this approach with Iranians, where he convinces supporters of the regime to live in cohabitation with him. His latest films MY WORST ENEMY and WHERE GOD IS NOT, both premiering at the Berlinale in 2023, deal with the violence of interrogation and detention in Iran.
The story of Sisi, Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, and her lady-in-waiting Irma, who falls madly in love with Sisi while working for the Empress and eventually helps her to commit suicide out of love.

Finsterwalader studied literature and history in Berlin. She worked at various theatres, including the Maxim Gorki Theater and the Volksbühne. From 2001 she was an editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung until 2003, when she began studying documentary film directing at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF). After graduating, she moved with her family to Argentina, Kenya and Italy. She has been living in Los Angeles for several years.

An amateur filmmaker who has filmed bears for years, contacts a film school looking for someone to edit his images into a film. A student comes forward. But when she digitises his archive, she discovers that the recordings are not only of bears. A discussion ensues about the power of a gaze and its voyeuristic violence.

Kantarama Gahigiri is a writer and director with joint Swiss and Rwandan citizenship. She explores the notions of identity, migration, sovereignty and on-screen representation, through various film formats, both in Switzerland and in East Africa. She participated in Realness Residency in 2018, Le Moulin d’Andé in 2020 and Berlinale Talents in 2021. And recently in 2023, she has been invited to Atelier Grand Nord with TANZANITE, her featurelength film in development.
Little Sali and Vreni grow up in the Swiss countryside, where their farmer fathers work together. When a disagreement arises between the two men that turns into extreme animosity, the children are prevented from seeing each other. Meeting as young adults some years later, Sali and Vreni must confront the hostilities between their families, as well as the tense atmosphere of the village, if they are to love each other.

Kayije Kagame is Switzerland’s European Shooting Star, presented by the European Film Promotion at the Berlinale.
Kayije Kagame was born in Geneva. She studied at the drama academy ENSATT in Lyon (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre) and worked with legendary theatre director Bob Wilson, among others. Kagame is also the creator of numerous performances, sound pieces, films and installations. Most recently she toured with INTÉRIEUR VIE / INTÉRIEUR NUIT (INNER LIFE / INNER NIGHT), which she codirected together with Hugo Radi.
The role of Rama in SAINT OMER by French director Alice Diop marks Kayije Kagame’s feature film debut and has attracted a great deal of attention. SAINT OMER premiered in Venice and was awarded the Silver Lion. The film was the French entry for the International Feature Film Competition at the 95th Academy Awards. Kayije Kagame was selected by the French Film Academy as a “Revelation” for the 2023 Césars.

The film went on to have its international premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2014. BLACK PANTHER was nominated for the FIRST STEPS Awards 2013 and the STUDIO HAMBURG Young Talent Award 2014.
A poetic love story between a man and the ghost of his deceased wife. While dealing with his grief, the man travels back and forth between memory, reality and fantasy, trying to put a proper end to the relationship. The film is being shot between Zurich, the mountains of the lower Engadin valley and the Historic Waldhaus Hotel in Sils María.

* 1992. Lisa Gertsch is known for her short film ALMOST EVERYTHING (2017), for which she won the prestigious Student Academy Award ® 2018 in the category Narrative. A modern relationship and emancipation story set in nineteenth century Alpine Switzerland: Jakob, a young farmhand who dreams of owning his own horse, is forced into marriage with the musically highly gifted maid Elsie, who longs for a career as a musician.
