The Best of the Best

TWENTY YEARS AGO the Northshore was a very different place than it is today. The area had yet to be impacted by the population boom in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Highway 190 was a two-lane road through the heart of Mandeville, Madisonville was still considered “the country” and anyone who would’ve suggested an exit on Fremaux Avenue would have been laughed out of town. In order to meet the population explosion over the last two decades, subdivisions have been built, schools have opened and virtually every type of business has been introduced into the area. There is perhaps no better gauge of the growth in the business community than our Northshore’s Best awards.

As part of Sophisticated Woman Magazine’s 20th anniversary back in 2005, then-editor Francie Unger and publisher Joanne Gallinghouse created The Northshore’s Best to recognize and honor local businesses. As the only Northshore readers’ choice program, what started with 93 categories has since expanded into over 400 categories encompassing West St. Tammany, East St. Tammany and Tangipahoa. Throughout the years, our goal has been to give our readers a voice to identify those businesses that excel in delivering products and services to our community.

There have been many long-time businesses that continue to impress our readers with their commitment to excellence. In fact, St. Tammany Hospital, Acquistapace’s, Coffee Rani and Gallagher`s have been perennial winners in their respective specialties. Other categories have fierce rivalries with two or three businesses taking turns. Some companies even employ competitive “Vote for Us” campaigns to win the coveted The Northshore’s Best title. Almost everywhere you go throughout the area – from doctors’ offices to car washes – if a business has been awarded the title in the past, you are going to know about it. They proudly display the logo that is their badge of recognition on stickers, banners, certificates, signage and in advertising materials.

With an open voting process, anyone can vote for any local business in just a few categories or all of them. The process is 100 percent objective. Advertising in Sophisticated Woman is not a pre-requisite to winning. This year, thousands of votes were cast – a testament to our loyal readers and their passion for the Northshore people and businesses they love. Congratulations to our 2023 winners and thanks to all of you who have helped make The Northshore’s Best successful for the last 20 years.

How many times have pet parents thought, “I wish my pet could talk, if only to tell me how to help them live their best life”? When a pet shows physical or behavioral signs of health problems, their guardians are often faced with a lack of answers or an overwhelming amount of conflicting information. Luckily for the Northshore, they have VetNaturally’s Dr. Ashley Geoghegan’s unique combination of knowledge, decades of experience and unwavering compassion. Dr. G, as she is known by her loyal clients, began her career treating military working dogs as a US Army veterinarian and went on to treat pets in their homes with her mobile practice on wheels which included surgery capabilities. And while Fido and fluffy may not actually talk to Dr. G, she certainly has developed a way to compassionately communicate by interacting with them and considering their overall quality of life, experiencing what they are exposed to and how they function in their own unique environments.

“I saw a need for alternative medical treatments to address chronic conditions, particularly in elderly pets, to provide the best, most comprehensive care possible,” says the caregiver always seeking to bring more to her practice. Dr. G sought additional training in Eastern veterinary medicine at The Chi Institute under the world-renowned holistic veterinarian, Dr. Huisheng Xie, and she studied at the Canine Rehabilitation Institute to fully help her geriatric patients function at their best. Today, with six different certifications and specialty designations, she practices Integrative Medicine, which is a combination of Traditional Chinese Veterinary medicine (TCVM), canine rehabilitation and conventional modern medicine. What that means for her patients is a practice like no other with a range of approaches, techniques and alternatives including food therapy, acupuncture, essential oil and herbal therapy, medical spa treatments and massage therapy giving options and

relief that traditional medicine alone can’t offer. VetNaturally Animal Hospital also has a rehabilitation department with therapies such as underwater treadmill, class IV laser and shockwave therapy. Another focus is treating chronic skin problems with their skin health spa. Dr. G’s innovations have garnered her local acclaim as a consistent The Northshore’s Best winner for close to 20 years as well as worldwide respect including teaching positions at the LSU Veterinary School of Integrative Medicine program and Chi University in Florida. She also holds a position as a board member on the World Association of TCVM Board. “There is nothing like VetNaturally in the country. Caring for Physical Remains—Usually, people are clear on their choice of burial or cremation. Most loved ones have told someone how they wish to be cared for. But it can be a hard decision for some families, especially when the wishes of the deceased were never clearly stated. Please know we’re here to help you with that decision. If you’ve chosen burial, the casket is chosen followed by the selection of vault or desired cemetery location. If cremation is your choice, the next decision will be whether the remains will be placed in a mausoleum niche or buried on cemetery grounds.
