“And now I feel like a real bride ….” Any wedding dress retailer will tell you, that the moment a bride tries on her veil, and looks in the mirror, is the moment she finally sees her fairytale coming true. Yet another thing those same designers and retailers tell you, is quite often, this moment – the great veiling as we call it – is usually an afterthought. A bride will simply pick up what is available, unaware of the vast array of choices open to her. Why should she put so little thought into something which is, quite literally, her defining, crowning sign-off on the most important outfit of her life? We at Sash and Veil are changing that. Since Angelina Jolie’s memorable child’s etching veil – in which she tasked her brood with doodling designs on her floor-length veil, we find that veils are
nudging their way towards the top of a bride’s shopping list. If your veils is the first thing a bride’s guests – or indeed her husband – will notice about her on this day, we have created a vast array of veils from the very simple elegant to the out-and-out wow factor statement - not to complement any dress – but which any dress will complement. Pick your veil, and design your outfit around it. After-all, every fairytale should start at the beginning, to reach that happily ever after… Discover the Sash & Veil collection at www.sashandveil.co.uk Written by Heather Cooper, Founder of Sash & Veil Photography by Bianco Photography www.biancophotography.com and Kevin Mills Photography
BRIDESMAID DRESSES REWRITTEN Introducing the off the wall bridesmaid dress that ticks all the boxes
WE ARE REWRITING THE RULES
Exciting new bridesmaids dress brand Rewritten announced the launch of their first collection, available to buy from November 2016. Based in London, Rewritten was created in 2016 by friends Katie Arnott and Frances Hudson, who, frustrated by the current offering of bridesmaids dresses for their bridesmaids, decided to design their own. Rewritten is designed for all of those damn cool bridesmaids out there, we create beautiful bridesmaids dresses which are chic, sophisticated, a little bit bohemian and take an entirely modern approach to bridal wear. We work alongside some of the world ’s best suppliers to offer flattering, simple designs in the most beautiful fabric and colour combinations. Having gained a 1 st class Honours degree in fashion design from the prestigious Edinburgh College of Art in 2008, Frances began a ten year career in luxury fashion and jewellery PR, working for highly regarded brands such as NET-A-PORTER, Prada, Carolina Herrera and Astley Clarke. Katie is a sales wizard and has been working in the jewellery industry for almost ten years managing UK and international wholesale and
direct channels for a major global jewellery brand. Her experience in market analysis and relationship building – ultimately growing UK and International sales channels – is second to none. The launch collection from Rewritten features six signature styles, each available in one of four colours – Concrete, Peachy, Bluebell and Chianti. Crafted in a beautiful chiffon crepe polyester, each dress is layered throughout and finished with invisible zips, delicate ties and covered buttons. Styles include The Vienna, a floor length racer back dress with waist tie fastening, The Marrakech, a cold-shoulder double layer top with floor length skirt, The Havana, a halter neck top with stitch detailing and a stepped hem with a floor length skirt, The Florence, an ankle length wrap dress with back and waist tie detail, the Mykonos, a cold shoulder floor length gown and The Tokyo, a knee length wrap dress with back and waist tie detail. Each dress is designed with a wide circumference to give a fuller skirt, allowing for beautiful movement when walking or dancing. Discover more of the Rewritten collection at www.wearerewritten.com
Priced at between ÂŁ140 - ÂŁ160, each dress, top and skirt will come specially packaged in a luxury Rewritten box. The website offers a unique service in which brides can send each of their bridesmaids a dress to their individual addresses, we want it to feel like the special gift it should be. Ultimately, it is our mission to make you to feel amazing when you put on one of our bridesmaids dresses. You can imagine my delight, when approached by the talented photographer Georgina Harrison, as she shared her ideas for a very special, fine art shoot in the beautiful North Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby? I adore the seaside, long walks along the shore line breathing in the sea air, so from the beginning I knew this project was going to be a very special personal investment. The location and charming Victorian wedding venue on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park was just waiting to be rediscovered. New owners are restoring the stunning manor house, maintaining the stylish essence of a bygone era with luxurious decor, furnishings and fabrics. The spectacular setting has a seductive charm which I found impossible to resist. The grounds take in breathtaking views, manicured lawns, graceful eucalyptus trees sharing pretty meadows with fruit trees and wild flowers; I was lost
in styling heaven. The natural flow and abundance of original wrought iron fencing, gates, stone work and meandering paths stole my heart - I will forever have a fondness for this special place. Reflecting the beauty and peaceful calm of the surroundings, the design was soft and sympathetic, using seasonal wedding flowers of fragrant white lilac, eucalyptus and peonies. The colour palette was cool and subtle with chalky whites, velvety muted greens, complemented by rich fabrics that billowed in the breeze. I wanted to create something achingly beautiful and truly authentic, a style that was thoughtful, and perfectly in tune with the romantic setting and venue. I think by now you have guessed I loved everything about this collaboration, and I hope it illustrates that dreams really can come true in this idyllic North Yorkshire coastal hamlet. Hopefully your wedding day will be one of the happiest days of your life – so let’s spread the love a bit further. I am, of course, talking about involving a charity in your wedding day. If it’s something you’d love to consider, but you’re not sure how to do it without your guests feeling overtly pressured for money, we’ve come up with some unique ways of giving back. 1. If you’d feel awkward asking your guests outright for money in the invite, why not set up a charity service on an online gift list? There are lots of providers who allow the option of donating to charity as a gift, alongside your coffee machines and egg huts. More often than not, they hold all the donations until after your big day – so that the final amount is donated and in your name too. 2. Honour those who can’t be with you on the day with a photo wall. Stick photos to a wall or mirror or hang them on fairy lights, alongside an accompanying note as to which charity would really benefit from a donation in their name. 3. Host a tea party with any leftover wedding cake. If you’ve got any wedding cake left, liaise with local charities who engage in outreach programmes for the elderly – for example, Contact The Elderly [www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk] hold monthly tea parties in the community, where disconnected elderly people come together to chat, laugh and chew the cud. Why not see if your wedding cake could be part of such a special time or whether they'd like some of your flowers to decorate their venue?
4. If you can bear to part with your dress, send it to the lovely people over at Gift of A Wedding [www.giftofawedding.org]. Find your local dress ambassador and pop it along to them for a seriously or terminally ill bride that may require a dress in a short space of time. 5. Alternatively, send your wedding dress to be made into a set of memorial dresses for stillborns or newborns who have sadly passed away. Cherished Gowns [www.cherishedgowns.org.uk] take wedding dresses and ensure they are used in this special way. 6. Think about hosting your wedding in a venue where the revenue goes to charity. Many buildings are (sometimes surprisingly) run by or connected to not-for-profits. Searching for this kind of venue can also lead you to a wild and vastly unexplored area of wedding venues, but they’re none the less stunning. Places like Scout’s meeting huts or Victorian schools could be a match made in heaven for your big day. 7. Save your flowers and take them to a nursing or care home for others to enjoy. Appoint someone as official Head of the Flower Department and give them strict instructions to gather all of the flowers after the wedding and keep them somewhere, hydrated, overnight. Prior to the day, make some enquiries with local homes to see if they’d like the donation of some of your gorgeous arrangements, and then you could even go along to the home with them the day after to talk about your day and young love. That’s what people want to hear on a Sunday morning, right? 8. Use your hen or stag do to help a charity in need. You could use a big event like the Shine Walk [www.cancerresearchuk.org] as part of your do. If you want to stay a bit closer to home, you could host a cocktails and crafts party making care packages for orphans, blankets for the homeless, or letters for care homes. 9. Source wedding supplies which already include a charitable donation in the price. For example, Dick Beau [www.etsy.com/uk/shop/dickbeau] do some boob and willy themed pocket squares, with a 10% donation to Cancer Research – you'll wear them with an enormous sense of pride. This way you can have your dream wedding with fabulous suppliers, and still help other people. Amazing! Esme Cape
Halfpenny London’s Spring/Summer ’17 collection titled “Wild Love”, tells the story of wild romance and the summer of love. Weaving Brit cool with luxe sensibility, Kate has created a breathtaking collection of stunning dresses and interchangeable separates in her signature style. The Wild Love collection is composed of specially designed beading and embroidery, teamed with exquisite French lace, liquid silks, crepe and sumptuous flocked laces. The new pieces draw inspiration from a wild English rose garden in the intricate detail of the flowers, and the layers of delicate fragrant petals that evoke memories of summer; the contradiction lies in the graphic shapes of oblongs and circles for the expertly tailored pieces. Kate’s strong attention to detail is showcased within her new collection of stunning beading and hand embroidery, magical florals that come to life through three-dimensional textures. As always, Kate’s obsession with fabrics shines through, a graduate of London’s Central St. Martins textiles Masters
it is hardly surprising she designs luxury fabrics for each new season. Key statement pieces elevate the classic Halfpenny London collection. The voluminous “Bow Jacket” blurs the boundaries between bridal and fashion, while the “Cheryl” dress features a slinky bias cut with ties to wrap across the back, chic and simple. This season also features new editions to Halfpenny London classics, the “Esme” dress now made in a graphic Mikado and Kate’s signature “Iris” dress in a fine French lever lace with triple floral borders and a flocked spot bodice. Kate’s creativity and intuition when it comes to understanding the modern bride truly shines in this collection with luxe fashion-driven pieces you will want to wear again. “Wild Love” is available in the flagship store and Halfpenny London stockists. Simon and Ruth tied the knot at Sheffield Town Hall in a fabulously bright, colourful and contemporary celebration that oozed personality. 'Both me and my partner love Sheffield, we live very close and work in Sheffield and wanted a venue that reflected the city – graffiti and all. Ideally we were wanting a warehouse/bare brick wall place and found the Chimney House on Kelham Island which was amazing but only seated 50 people. Then we heard about Mary Street – a very small, newly opened art gallery, they’d done just one wedding when we went to take a look and it was perfect. Exactly the right size, no fluff or grandeur just a beautiful bare building with gorgeous windows and two very friendly guys running it. My partner struggled to see what it would look like but I had no concerns at all. Other than that our only theme/priority was food! We both love food, my husband is a great cook and writes a food blog. The food was something we didn’t want to scrimp on, we’ve been to the Milestone numerous times and my husband has been on some of their cooking courses so there was no question about asking them to cater the wedding. The menu tasting is still our favourite
part of the whole wedding planning and we were not disappointed at all! Other than that we just really wanted a relaxed day with our friends and family – we had a special ‘kids table’ filled with bubbles and colouring books, lots of food and drink and very simple décor - £200 on vases and Ikea candles and flowers were all it needed.' 'We set off for the town hall from Jury’s inn (7 bridesmaids seemed like a good idea at the time!). It was drizzling but nothing to ruin the day, the ceremony seemed to go by really quickly, it was lovely were both Atheists and wanted a simple ceremony, very little fuss, in and out job! We are so fortunate to have wonderful friends and one of our groomsmen (Alex) arranged all the music, he was so organised he had given it to the town hall on CD, Memory stick and had it all on his phone just in case! We also had our friend Gareth videoing the day for us and he managed to capture me running out of the room and leaving Si behind.' 'We went from there to Mary Street in a black cab with Ellie our photographer to get some nice pictures of just the two of us, we got a lot of smiles and waves from the pension queue. We got to Mary Street a few minutes after the guests and
were greeted by the milestone staff with drinks and canapes, me and Si went off with Ellie to get some pictures of us around the car park where we wanted to capture the city / the graffiti etc – meanwhile someone was off hunting down my mother in law as her taxi had taken her to St Mary’s church by mistake and dropped her off.' 'We had a good hour or so relaxing and drinking, the sun had come out and everyone was having a great time. Alex, also acting as master of ceremonies for us, announced the food and speeches. The best man’s speech was amazing, my husband is a health and safety consultant and he started by running through the exits with a high vis vest on. Si’s main aim was to try and make as many people cry as he could so he was happy he succeeded. The meal was excellent, exactly what we’d wanted and the staff were fantastic. After the food quite randomly some of the guys were outside, there’d been a dance festival in the town and a group of Morris dancers were walking past on their way home. They asked what was going on and Alex told them it was a wedding, and would they be
interested in an impromptu dance for us? Just 5 minutes? And that’s how we ended up having the UK’s #1 Morris dancers performing at our wedding! Something everyone seemed to love and were adamant we must have booked them!' 'The rest of the day/evening was completely relaxed, so much so we missed all the times and eventually one of my bridesmaids had to ask when we were cutting the cake because it should have been an hour ago? Once our evening guests arrived the guys at Mary Street moved the tables around for some dancing space, the pizza oven in the court yard got started and we just had a blast. The guys at Mary Street had originally asked us how we wanted the bar stocked…..most people ask for craft beer’s, posh gin, maybe cocktails – we asked for Hooch. A few of our friends drank it and so we’d asked them to stock it, they ran out twice! They had to do a drinks run – we drank Sheffield dry of Hooch, so much so that at one point our friend videoing the day say he’d panned around the room and it looked liked an advert for Hooch, everyone had one in their hand.'
'Memorable moments – our friend having to nip in to the ceremony between bridesmaids, my dad’s speech (all 2 minutes) was the best for me, the morris dancers performing for us, our friend who had way too much to drink trying to join in our first dance, and seeing the entire phoenix rugby team all drinking Hooch.' 'Our advice to other couples would be figure out what THE most important thing is to you and spend time/money on that, the other stuff doesn’t matter (for us it was food and a relaxed place for our guests to be themselves).'
'Don’t listen to other people, it’s your wedding, if you want a naked wedding cake have one, even if your parents don’t know what that is.'

A while ago, I liked a page on Facebook which was a space for brides-to-be to ask for opinions or help with any issues they were having with their wedding and the planning. In my mind, I was going to pass wisdom on left right and centre, single-handedly solving their problems and improving their life situations in a simple Facebook comment, peppered with emojis. In reality, after the many other brilliant, brilliant commenter’s had offered their invaluable insight and genius solutions, all that was really left for me to add into the mix was a burgeoning feeling of wanting to make them a cup of tea and give them a hug to let them know everything was going to be ok. I’m telling you this because I now feel like I’ve amassed enough scientific evidence to confidently say that LOADS of brides have problems or worries regarding their bridesmaids. From dress dilemmas to bitchy behaviour, bridesmaids played a major factor in a lot of the brides’ questions. However, there wasn’t such a common theme in the answers – it quickly became apparent that everyone had very different ideas as to the role that they should play. Prone as I am to taking time off from this heinous university degree, to instead muse about weddings, I began to wonder what the core expectations of a bridesmaid should be. So – drum roll please – I hereby introduce Ellie’s Guide To Bridesmaids Made Easy: How to ensure that you pop the question safely (No, not that question – the next question after that). Your bridesmaids should be ready to support and champion you throughout the planning period as much as they can and need to. Obviously—this somewhat goes without saying—this means you need to give a good think about who you want your bridesmaids to be, and whether they’re fit for the role. Would they be able to make you feel a little lighter about whatever’s going/gone wrong? Will they know how to make you laugh after a day of headaches? Whether this means a list-fuelled Organisation Queen with a little headset a la J-Lo and Monica from Friends, or whether that means someone who’s approach is completely the yin to your yang, you need a team of people who you can count on to be your wedding warriors. On the flipside, make sure you’re not focussing purely on your
bridesmaids in terms of how much time they have spare to dedicate entirely to your wedding – there’s no point in discounting fabulous and supportive friends just because their own lives will sometimes (unfortunately) get in the way. If they’re as fabulous and supportive as you feel they are, they’ll offer you as much as they can possibly offer – that’s the main thing. If bridesmaids were flowers, I’d pick you – this should nip any worries of them not being interested, or you feeling flat out and on your own in the bud. Your bridesmaids should also be super clear on what you’re asking them to do – but note, the ball lies in YOUR court for this one. As I mentioned before, everyone has different expectations of bridesmaids, and you need to make sure you convey that to yours. If you want them to go to dress fittings and walk down the aisle looking beautiful, and that’s it, that’s fine – but you need to make clear what you’d like them to do before you do it. Instead, if you’d love them to be hands-on helpers, pulling their weight with arts and crafts DIYs for the big day, mediating divorced parents differences and providing some muscle behind your personalised wedding hashtag, let them know what you’d love them to get involved in. A heads-up will make all the difference to their commitment throughout the planning process, and will hopefully quell any possibilities of disappointment further down the line. Your bridesmaids should be open throughout the process, striking the balance right between being brutally, bitchily honest, and between being entirely silent and uncooperative with any questions. It goes without saying that you want your bridesmaids to feel like their opinions matter, because you care about them – how do they feel about wearing heels on the day? Which bits of the dress do they like? Do they like this theme idea?—but it should also be that your bridesmaids offer their opinion knowing it will be taken into account but not necessarily happen. Nobody involved in the wedding day wants anyone feeling uncomfortable or harbouring any grudge, so say how you feel, being truthful and considerate. Think of the sentiment of the rainbows, cakes and smiles girl at the end of Mean Girls, but with less crying, and without turning up to a wedding party uninvited (but with cake. Always with cake.) This should altogether avoid any discordant feelings on the day.
Think of the sentiment of the rainbows, cakes and smiles girl at the end of Mean Girls, but with less crying, and without turning up to a wedding party uninvited (but with cake. Always with cake.) This should altogether avoid any discordant feelings on the day. Your bridesmaids shouldn’t be a specific number, age, height, or hair colour to suit your photos, your parents/in-law’s advice, or to make you look better in comparison. What you want to take away from the day is a glorious day where everyone was excited and a
little bit tummy-anxious but ultimately ecstatic because you were getting married – this isn’t achieved with maths. Your bridesmaids shouldn’t be floundering on the day. Collectively they should know what’s going on, and roughly what to do if anything needs rectifying. They’re there to make your day effortless…even if it requires effort for them. Crib sheets are really handy for this, with a collection of on-the-day contacts. Ask your chief bridesmaid, the best organised one, or your MOH to be the contact for any suppliers with last-minute questions, and circulate their details so that problems can circumvent you. Your bridesmaids should, finally, enjoy their bridesmaid-ing. This is down to a blend of just about every factor there could be in a wedding, but if they don’t enjoy it, you definitely won’t feel good about choosing them. It is, after all, an honour to be picked to be a bridesmaid, precisely because it’s such a special invitation to a wonderfully happy day that won’t be forgotten. On the day, their happiness will ease your quease. It’s as simple as that. Written by Ellie Kime

Say 'hello' to a brand new face on the And So To Wed block: the inimitable lady behind Sarah Wayte Photography. Writing an introduction to the Essex-based photographer was somewhat a struggle, because Sarah introduces herself so exceptionally; a selfproclaimed ‘little bit offbeat’ photographer, who revels in documenting the journey of your big day and isn’t afraid to buck out-dated traditions. Her unobtrusive but impactful style of photography means that she’ll capture all of the key moments– the ones most important to you, ones you’ll cherish forever, and the ones you didn’t even know happened. We defy you to visit Sarah's website without smiling to yourself and feeling a warm and rosy glow inside. Her focus on the importance of the joy of those who matter to you most is reflected in her stunning work, leaving you with breath-taking and heartbeatskipping mementos that will transport you right back to the big day, when you’re looking back at the album in 60 years time with a tartan blanket and sheepskin slippers. You’ll be taken right back to the moment you walked down the aisle…and then maybe the moment you threw yourself around the dancefloor too! Sarah’s documentary-style of shooting perfectly bridges the gap between the most
seminal occasions, like getting ready, and the minute attention to detail that makes all the difference, like your mum’s warning look during the best man’s speech (which you might miss because you’re too busy holding your head in your hands). The result of her commitment? You’re guaranteed to come out with a whole collection of photos that show an effortless, wonderful day, full of beautiful people having the time of their lives. If sumptuous candid shots and a calming presence are what you need, Sarah is most definitely your girl. Whatever the style of your wedding, she will take the most romantic and treasured shots, because she values being asked to be a part of it. Promising to only let out the odd squeal of excitement, she spends most of her time tirelessly squirrelling around in the background to get the ultimate photos. To have a supplier who’s so enthusiastic about weddings and so genuinely grateful to be part of them means a wedding supplier who’ll go the extra mile to make sure your dreams come true. If many hands make light work, happy hands make magic work. So who’s capable hands would be better to leave your wedding in? Answers on the back of a happy-tear-stained postcard (although bear in mind Sarah will take a stunning photo of you writing this postcard too).
