We use only fresh, never-frozen ground beef or turkey. Every morning we hand make every single burger patty. You can get our Boardwalk Burger as a single or double. Our customers have two options when ordering their burgers. They can choose one of our famous signature burgers, or have it totally customized to their liking. After you choose the type of bread (white or wheat), you have the option of cheese (American, cheddar, bleu cheese or Swiss) and bacon. Next choose from our free unlimited toppings and our free unlimited sauces.
Our famous fries are hand-cut every day and only made to order. They are cooked in 100% peanut oil multiple times at different temperatures to give them that perfect flavor and texture. After the final cook at the hottest temperature, the Boardwalk fries are dumped and lightly salted and ready to be served. We recommend dressing them the way they do in Maryland, with loads of vinegar and Old Bay seasoning.

Look up the word ‘entrepreneur’ and you’ll find an appropriately bold and eye-catching description. Entrepreneur: a risk-taking business person. Entrepreneurship requires a special personality. And Mike Mothner has exactly that.

MIKE MOTHNER
he decisions he’s made throughout his entrepreneurial endeavors have not been what he considers ‘risks.’ Marked by confidence, Mike has a natural talent for identifying a business opportunity and turning it into a thriving company. Not coincidentally, he also has a genuine passion for life that others find infectious. Such attributes—a natural inclination for business and people—have played an essential role in Mike’s present day success. Combine such qualities with a fervent desire to make a real impact on the world, and you have the unstoppable entrepreneurial force that is Mike Mothner. His enthusiasm for entrepreneurship began at the young age of fourteen, when he taught himself how to program websites. Mike maintained his passion for computer programming, and in 2003 he graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Economics and Computer Science. It was during his time at Dartmouth that Mike founded Wpromote. In 2001 Mike saw that the websites he built had a need for search engine marketing, so he took it upon himself to launch a company that would do exactly that. To this day, Wpromote is the nation’s leading search engine marketing firm. Located in Los Angeles, Wpromote provides search engine marketing, social media and conversion optimization services to several thousand clients worldwide. The firm offers industry superior proprietary technology, dedicated customer support, and an honest, holistic approach to each of its client’s needs. Under Mike’s leadership, the company’s seventy-five talented employees have won Wpromote plenty of accolades. The following list entails a small sample of such awards:
years during which it would have felt good to have financial backing; but, in the end, we’ve been wonderfully fortunate to achieve what we have without giving up control or vision. 3 How did you finance your vision for Wpromote? It was as bootstrapped as is gets! During Wpromote’s first month in existence, a merchant account cost me $50. So, 5 clients at $10 per month kept me in business. 4 What was the most difficult part of starting Wpromote? For me, launching Wpromote was not difficult. I was in school, so I didn’t have the typical opportunity cost of leaving a job. Also, the company’s early growth was entirely organic so it never felt overwhelming. However, two periods that were challenging include: making the decision to forego the corporate world and turn a one-man operation into a “real” business, and navigating through the challenging years of 2009-2010. Throughout those last two years I felt spread very thin and lacking in any outside support. 2010 was a huge year of growth and expansion—we doubled our workforce and incubated two new companies. This growth led to working capital challenges that I had never experienced before. I put on a happy face while my stress level grew inside, and it became a very lonely place. Ultimately, by internalizing I was not confiding in—and making the most out of—the fabulous team I had assembled around me. When I was finally pressed by that very team to become really transparent, it was not only a huge sense of relief but the results were astounding. We trimmed the fat, we tackled inefficiencies and we refocused on our biggest opportunities.

Under Mike’s leadership, Wpromote has become the nation’s leading search engine marketing firm today.
‘lots of little course corrections allow the overall direction to stay on track. From a damage control perspective, it’s simple: take ownership of mistakes, take responsibility for errors (everybody makes them, after all) and learn from them. I can’t tell you how often we are able to turn a negative into a positive by owning a mistake. By being forthright and making corrections, we end up better off than if we’d never screwed up in the first place. 10 How do you generate new ideas? I generate new ideas by watching how I and those around me interact with our world; I look for ways to improve those interactions. I guess in that way I am not a revolutionary thinker at all. When my website clients in 2001 asked how to get listed in search engines, a light bulb went off for me—I realized there was a need there that wasn’t being met. On Christmas morning of 2007 when my mom asked me how to get her old photo albums “on the computer,” the idea for ScanDigital was born. When we saw that, prior to checking their items out from Zappos, people were searching on Google for “zappos promo code” in another tab, it led to CouponPal. 11 How long do you stick with an idea before giving up? I’m not somebody that stays on the boat all the way into the iceberg; but, I probably don’t jump ship at the optimal time either. I don’t know that anyone does. I definitely like to see ideas through to the point that the probability of success or turning things around is very low. 12 How do you build a successful customer base? By exceeding their expectations wherever possible! One of the reasons we have been successful—well, at least in our industry—is that we deliver an experience that has a human side to it. People like working with us, not just because we deliver a service, but because they like working with us. That takes a great team. 13 The internet is such a constantly changing niche. How does Wpromote keep up with these changes? What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced in online marketing? For us to be successful, we absolutely have to be at the forefront of changes in the industry. We try to do far more than just stay up on current news in the industry—we test and try things never done before. We then take those learnings and apply them to our clients. 14 What are your expectations for the future with regards to your company? Where do you see Wpromote in 5 years? 10 years? The current path is that of positive growth every month, so we see that continuing and snowballing. We may explore growing through acquisition in order to accelerate past organic growth; but, I love where we are. I love where we are going, and there are no plans to exit the business at this point. 15 You also founded ScanDigital.com, Plundr.com and CouponPal.com. How are these other business ventures going? ScanDigital.com is going incredible. It has expanded exponentially as the
leading provider of photo and video digital conversion. We are currently acquiring other businesses that allow us to cultivate the customer relationship past just bringing old photos to the digital age. We now offer products like wall graphics and beautiful, custom canvas prints. CouponPal.com is also doing amazing things. It’s growing extremely rapidly in the niche of e-commerce deals. We’re continuing to develop its brand footprint and merchant relationships. Plundr.com, sadly, has been the one casualty thus far. We hit challenges in the penny auction space from in-payment processing, so we were just spread too thin to continue forward. But three out of four feels pretty good. 16 What drives you? I am a very competitive person; so when I do something, I want to be the best at it. If I start a business, I want it to be the best it can be in every way. Money may be the measuring stick of success, but that alone is not what drives me. I love building things! I love building teams, products, clients, and companies. I’ll never “retire.” Though, by no means is work 100% of my life. I seek to always have a healthy balance of work and fun. 17 To what do you most attribute your success? What would you say are the five key elements for starting and running a successful company? I think there are two keys to my success so far. First, I’ve wanted to do this since I was a little kid, so it was just somehow part of my DNA. Second, while others might call me a “risk-taker,” I say that I just really believed in myself. I knew I could do things that others thought I couldn’t. With that belief, even if I wasn’t always right, I never considered myself as one who was taking giant “risks.” I think the five key elements to starting and running a successful company are: 1. Believing in yourself. 2. Being competitive, but not selfish. 3. Being aware of what you don’t know, what you’re not good at—and embracing it. 4. Being able to find ways to motivate others. 5. Not doing it only for money; there are far easier, less risky ways to make money. 18 What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Just get out there and do it. By all means, do your research and planning. But at a certain point you need to get out of the spreadsheet and just jump in, because nothing will be quite what you think it will. These days you can do so much with so little. A good idea, drive, and sweat can take you a great distance. 19 Who (or what) has been your greatest inspiration? I’d say my greatest inspiration has been my desire to create an impact on the world around me.

“The nervous system is the master system of the body. It allows all other systems to function.”
When visiting the offices of Dr. Baker and Dr. Giacalone, you know that you are in a place where people truly care about the healing of your body. To be freed of pain naturally, by these caring professionals, is more than you could ask for. If you had a sharp rock in your shoe, what would you do about it? If you get prescribed a drug to mask the pain the rock remains, and the pain keeps coming back no matter how many pills you take. You would absolutely not do this. You would do the natural thing and take that sharp painful rock out of your shoe! Getting treated through Chiropractic care is the equivalent of taking that rock out of your shoe for good. In this time of quick fixes, and instant gratification, you may be tempted to go to extreme measures to
fix a problem within your body. People risk their lives, and their pockets by going under the knife for surgery. In many, cases non-intrusive, safe chiropractic care could fix that same problem. Not only are there the frightening risks that come along with anesthesiology, but the likelihood of something going wrong during surgery is above and beyond the minimal risks of natural chiropractic care that would fix the same thing! Whether it is from lifting, twisting, or moving the wrong way, a traumatic accident, or something you may have been born with, the swelling of discs between the bones in your spine that happen as a result of these things, causes pain and problems. These discs are next to nerves that run through your entire body, so pain from problems such as severe headaches can be corrected through adjustment of the spine.

If you are treated at Coast Chiropractic Center, you may very well be enlightened to a way of life free from pain, and indeed become one of those miracles yourself.
Dr. Baker and Dr. Giacalone have been in business as partners for over 30 years and have also been voted number 1 in the South Bay by multiple publications. Dr. Baker and Dr. Giacalone run a deeply caring practice that has a family-run feel.
“Getting treated through Chiropractic care is the equivalent of taking that rock out of your shoe for good.” 14
Patients know that they are safe and at home in the office of Coast Chiropractic Center. Coast Chiropractic Center can help all age groups. The youngest patient they have treated was three months old, and the oldest patient currently is 92. Just call for a consultation, and you will have the privilege of hearing about the miracles of chiropractic care. These examples from Dr. Baker and Dr. Giacalone will truly make you a believer of this type of natural healing of the body.

MIRACLES HAPPEN at Coast Chiropractic Center. It is 2013, and we are now more educated and aware about how we need to take care of our health. We know that needles and drugs not only have tremendous side effects, but also do not fix the problem permanently. The pain you are in will keep coming back until it is truly fixed.

How did you get into the nightclub and events business? I started off promoting bands that I was playing in during and after college. When I moved to LA, I got a marketing job for a local nightclub chain called the Red Onion. It started there, and then it went so well, I started getting calls from a lot of local and Hollywood clubs wanting me to come work for them. After several years, I had accumulated quite a database of “party-goers”, and I decided to start throwing big special events. They were a major hit. I started getting calls from other companies and entertainment people wanting to hire me to produce their events for them. After a while, I just gradually
got out of the club business and started concentrating on the bigger events. I still do occasional club parties to keep myself in the mix of what’s going on in the scene. What are some of your biggest sports and entertainment events? I have produced events for the NFL, NBA, ESPN, the Lakers, E Entertainment, Playboy and many others. I have produced events ranging from the Pre-Espy’s Party at the Playboy Mansion to Pro Bowl parties in Miami and Hawaii and Super Bowl events. I have also worked with companies like Power Balance to produce their events. We have had artists such as LMFAO, Jamie Foxx, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, PussyCat Dolls, Flo Rida, Kaskade, Tiesto, Avicii and many others perform at our events. These have been some fantastic events. What events do you have coming up? I am involved with a big celebrity red carpet event for the Academy Awards this weekend. I have big weekend events coming up in Las Vegas and in Palm Desert for Coachella as well. I also have some great local events like an all-day St.. Patrick’s Day event at

We are also starting work on a few huge events for the Super Bowl next year in New York. You are a musician/producer as well? What kind of music/videos do you have coming up? Yes. I am a singer/songwriter. I put out my first record about 8 years ago on my own label, and it sold about 15,000 copies. I did a little touring for that as well. I am now working on three different projects. Two of them are collaborations with well-known DJ/Producers, and the other is a rock/soul record that I am working on with a few different producers. I will start shooting the video for my first single next month with well known cinematographer William Smallwood. The record is due out sometime this summer. Torrance, its goal is simple: to provide for those with sky-high aspirations—literally—who always thought pursuing a hobby in aviation was out of their reach. To bring them one step closer to this objective, MGL Avionics is branching out on a new endeavor by building a small, two-seater plane on site. Typically, the planes that it sells or rents are manufactured back in Johannesburg, but The Sling, MGL’s current work in progress, is the first to be built from scratch in its California location.

he excitement is palpable. The employees rush around the hangar with purpose, all smiles and dusty hands, their enthusiasm as high as the planes in the air. Most of them hold a pilot license themselves and appear just as giddy to be putting together an airplane as they are to fly one. Matt Liknaitzky is a prime example. A native of South Africa himself, he traveled to the Southern California shores to kick off the expansion of MGL Avionics and is currently helping to oversee the construction of The Sling. “For a small two-seat airplane that can be flown for fun, it’s actually one of the biggest ones and the most comfortable ones and most capable ones,” Liknaitzky explains. “There’s lots of space for luggage, you can carry a lot of weight, and the visibility is amazing. You sit there almost in like a throne, 1000 feet over the city.” Small planes like The Sling can be used to travel farther than one might think. At its maximum speed of about 140 miles per hour, a pilot could fly for about six hours and cover a good 800 miles. “Your area of reach, your whole world grows,” Liknaitzky says. “You can leave from L.A. around 3 on a Friday, and get to Lake Tahoe by 6.

he Sling is to be the first of what Liknaitzky hopes will be many planes built locally. “We’re probably going to start a second one before we finish this one, and as we expand we’ll start doing more airplanes,” he says. MGL employees will also be on hand to help their more ambitious clients who want to try their hand at building planes themselves. “If users want to build an airplane, we’ll help them, so we’ll set up a station, and we’ll be right there to help them if they have any questions.” That’s the advantage of being located in Los Angeles County—there’s a thriving culture of avionics here that outsiders might overlook. “The Southern California area is known for entertainment, the creative arts, that’s where the bulk of the economy is, but the Southern California area is also really big in aviation worldwide,” Liknaitzky attests, rattling off names like Hughes Aircraft and Boeing that have a strong history in the area. “We want to sit right here, right in the place that’s got the richest aviation culture.”

What Liknaitzky enjoys most about his job, it seems, is helping his clients realize that getting a pilot license and actively enjoying aviation as a pastime is not as hard as it seems. “A lot of people dreamed about flying their whole life, but just never did it,” he says, explaining that they may think it’s too expensive, or that they have to have perfect vision, or that the skills needed to fly are too hard to acquire. First and foremost, Liknaitzky disputes that learning to fly costs a fortune. “You can expect to have your license for $5,000,” he insists, adding that eager pilots can usually rent a small plane for $100 an hour. Getting certified to fly is very straightforward too, he stresses. “You have to learn all the subjects, of course: weather, airspace regulations, aerodynamics, engine. But it’s easier than people think.” In the end, whether it is taking the next step in business by building planes on site or picking up a pilot manual after years of flirting with flying, Liknaitzky encourages ambitions to be fulfilled.
“It’s sad that people don’t follow through with their dreams,” he says. “I didn’t for a long time. I didn’t fly because I thought it was out of my reach, but anyone can do it.”

Instructor Taylor Montgomery’s passion for movement started at a young age when she discovered her love for dance and choreography. Similar to dance, Pilates gave Taylor discipline to teach her body to move and stretch. “It brought me back to my ballet days,” Taylor mentioned. “I was doing marketing for a physical therapy clinic in Beverly Hills, and they offered Pilates free to the employees. I took one class and was hooked! I quit the center and began my Pilates certification.”
Shortly after, she began training with Maria Leone in Beverly Hills and was certified in Method Pilates under the Physical Mind Institute. She incorporates her passion of dance by creating fun and invigorating classes for her clients. Taylor’s workouts consist of body sculpting on the Cadillac reformer and Wanda Chair. She focuses on improving strength, coordination, balance, and flexibility. Taylor incorporates her experience from working in many chiropractic offices and rehabilitation centers, and is able to work with clients with different types of injuries as well. Pilates is gentle on the body and most exercises are performed in reclining or sitting positions. Pilates is often used in physical therapy to rehabilitate injuries because the exercises are low impact and

only partially weight bearing. Pilates is a refreshing mind and body workout that is great for all ages and body types. By placing emphasis on breathing properly, body alignment, and a concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you become closely in tune with your body. You actually learn how to control your body’s movement with maximum power and efficiency. Along with accompanying breathing, the exercises can reduce stress and promote mind-body wellness.

How does it feel to be a Swoop Girl? Unbelievable! This is a great new experience, and I couldn’t be happier to rep for Swoop and my hometown. What is your favorite thing about living in Southern California? It would have to be the lifestyle. I love the community that is fostered here, where people come together around common interests like sports, the beach, and outdoor activities. Describe yourself in one sentence. I am an adventurous soul who thrills in discovering the opportunities God provides in life, who enjoys engaging with and serving others, who revels in taking chances, and who loves to have fun on the journey.

involved at my church, Journey of Faith, and love to serve there and in the community. My mom always taught me, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” and I try to live that out daily. I also love to be outside, whether it be hiking, biking, playing beach soccer, or just spending time with my wonderful friends. What would be your absolute perfect day? Exploring somewhere or something new on a beautiful sunny day with good company! I have a thirst to travel and absolutely love seeing and learning about new places, cultures, and history. Describe your “happy place.” There are some great hiking trails by Del Cerro Park in Palos Verdes to go explore. It’s this natural treasure in the middle of residential areas where you can see endangered birds, hike, ride horseback, and see incredible panoramas of the ocean.
What’s something most people don’t know about you? I was homeschooled all the way from 4th grade through the end of high school. Nerd alert!
What is your guilty pleasure? I will sometimes get up early on a Saturday morning and hit up some garage sales. It’s kind of like a treasure hunt; you never know what you’re going to find!
What do you like to do in your spare time? I’m an artist by profession, so much of my time is devoted to painting. I just started my own art, jewelry, and accessories small business called Summer’s Pearl (www.summerspearl.com), so I am currently pouring myself into that! I am very
If you could meet one person from history, who would it be and why? Benjamin Franklin. He was such a crucial player in the formation of the United States’ government, key principles, and the eyewitness to an incredible time in history. He was also full

of wit and humor and by all rights brilliant. I’ll overlook his womanizing! What is your favorite quote? “She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future.” ~Proverbs 31:25 This verse from the Bible describes a woman who is secure in who God created her to be, who is confident in herself, and is bold in the face of the unknown or those who try to convince her that she is worth less than she really is. Do you have a favorite book and why? “Gone With the Wind.” Besides being a glimpse at the perspective of the South during the Civil War, the characters are also deeply real—both incredibly strong and incredibly flawed. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself painting and creating art, and hope to see significant growth in my business, Summer’s Pearl. It would be great to remove the “starving” portion of the “Starving Artist” that is my job title! I hope to have hit up the next few countries on my travel bucket list, and maybe find someone special to travel with me.
never know where your “Why not?” could take you! What (or who) inspires you? I am inspired by people who chase their dreams and are true to themselves despite what others may think or say. I like this quotation, “Sometimes I have to remind myself that I don’t have to do what everyone else is doing.” A welldirected and motivated dreamer can bring about amazing innovation, art, and invention. So cheers to the dreamers! What is the proudest moment you’ve had thus far in your modeling career? I was selected to be one of four LA Galaxy spokesmodels for the 2012 season. I’m a HUGE LA Galaxy fan, so this was a tremendous honor and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the team. I was privileged to be there to observe Galaxy win two MLS Cups in a row in 2011 and 2012! “This is LA, our city, our home!”
What ignited your interest in modeling? I’m not a model, professionally, but I get in these “Why not?” moods and try new things. That’s what this was! I saw an opportunity and said, “Why not?” And here I am, on the cover of Swoop Magazine! Just goes to show that you spring 2013 | swoopmagazine.com |

Lipo-Lite
THIS TREATMENT RECENTLY APPROVED BY FDA.
by Emily Wheeler Photography by Lipo-Lite
AS SEEN ON DR. OZ
i-Lipo uses 36 lasers inside of the treatment pads that are placed on the desired area. These lasers gently release triglycerides within your fat cells that are then dissipated naturally through mild exercise post treatment. There is no pain, no needles, no toxic drugs, no excuses! The feeling patients have experienced during the short 20-minute treatment is warmth where the treatment pads are in contact with the patient’s skin. Other than that, all you have to do is lay back, relax, and then get your muscles moving for 20 to 30 minutes afterwards with a little exercise to burn those triglycerides off and the inches melt away!
Have you seen those nightmare shows on liposuction? The amount of life threatening, not to mention mentally scarring things that you may have to go through just to lose those last inches? The downtime and the draining bags? Who would want to have to do this to themselves when there is a non-invasive, no-pain treatment that takes away inches and diminishes stubborn fat? If you chose the state of the art intense light therapy that is i-Lipo, you will discover that your dream of feeling better about how you look is right here in your area.

DREW LOGAN: LIFE AFTER SUDDEN DEATH Written by Drew Logan
I
Photography by Natalie Young
Often mistaken as a heart attack, sudden cardiac arrest strikes unexpectedly and takes the lives of thousands each year. With precious minutes being the difference between life and death, the chances of survival are slim. Drew Logan, a Manhattan Beach professional fitness trainer of numerous sports athletes and celebrities, is the only known survivor of not one, not two, but three sudden cardiac deaths. Here, Drew talks about his terrifying experience and how it has impacted his life today.
don’t remember being dead. I do, however, remember the day I died. Mostly, it was just an ordinary Monday. It was Oct. 4, 2004, and death was nowhere in the thought process. As an extremely active and healthy, 30-yearold fitness expert and nutritionist, I had spent the day training clients, and then working out with a friend at the gym near my (then) home in Nashville, Tenn. An avid athlete since the age of 5, I’d managed to parlay my athletic skills and passion for fitness into a successful career as a personal trainer, building a busy clientele of country music industry professionals, fashion models, Div. 1 college, NFL, and NBA athletes. I was in phenomenal shape, with only 5 percent body fat at the time! But later that Monday evening, I would find myself face-down on the hallway floor of my girlfriend’s apartment—eyes open-face blue-no breathing-no pulse-dead! My exemplary devotion to a life of health and fitness was little help to me now. Or was it? I would die not just once, but three times that fateful Monday. The culprit each time: sudden cardiac arrest, a sudden electrical malfunction in the heart that stops a heartbeat cold and brings death in mere minutes. Miraculously, that night I was lying in the hallway floor, for nearly 6 minutes before paramedics got to me. After 2 attempts to shock me back to life using the defibrillators, the commanding officer of the ambulance crew announced, “I am going to stick him with an epinephrine pen...then shock him again...if it doesn’t work this time, we have to call it.” Unlike a heart attack, which occurs when a blocked artery disrupts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart, causing cardiac muscle to die, sudden cardiac arrest typically arrives with little to no warning. The electrical havoc disrupts the ventricles, which then quiver uselessly and can no longer pump blood to the body, or in my case, failing to quiver at all and just went completely cold. Each year, 300,000 Americans have a sudden cardiac arrest—but slightly less than 5 percent survive. That statistic is of people who have a single cardiac arrest. For those that survive one arrest, and have a second, the survival rate falls closer to 1 percent. And for those to survive and have a third cardiac arrest...there is no known statistic. In fact, there are no known survivors of three sudden cardiac arrests in the same night doctors say. Except me. I had been planning a quiet evening at home. But on my way home from work, my girlfriend called, inviting me over for dinner to celebrate her new job. So, never one to turn down a home cooked meal, I turned the car around and headed to her house. That was the deciding factor. Had I gone home, I would have never made it. After dinner this otherwise ordinary day turned deadly. We were at the computer making vacation plans, when suddenly, I began seeing tunnel vision
and felt pain in my head like it was going to explode. Then, I rolled out of the chair and to the floor, dead. Just as suddenly, though, I woke up, thinking I had just passed out. My girlfriend said I had convulsed and gasped for air and that I had stopped breathing, was certain I had not just passed out, and was insistent that I go to the hospital. I walked to the bathroom to splash some water on my face, thinking, “what is wrong with me?!”. I remember getting nose-to-nose with myself in the bathroom mirror looking in my face and eyes to try to calm my fear. Oddly though, it was like me the child, was looking in the face of me the adult, and I could see the fear on my own face, and something inside saying, “This is serious...you’re not going to make it.” On the way out of the bathroom, I froze in the doorway and my girlfriend asked, “What is it?” Then the second sudden cardiac arrest hit. I had the split second thought to hit my knees first, and then fell face-down on the hallway floor. I knew I was unable to move, I knew I was scared, but I was strangely calm and at peace. The last thing I remember is thinking, “This is it..I’m dying.” Later that night, in the coronary care unit of Vanderbilt Medical, I remember waking up with a breathing tube down my throat, and not being able to adjust my vision to see what was going on. I knew my girlfriend was standing next to me holding my hand, and she could see I was struggling to gain consciousness and said, “It’s OK...can you hear me?” Then, within a few seconds the jolting pain in my head felt like I had been hit by a truck, then lights out. Third cardiac arrest. This time it would take nurses more than a dozen attempts, and more than one epinephrine shot to get my heart beating again. My parents arrived at the hospital a few hours after the final arrest. Months later my Dad, who was a purple heart Vietnam Veteran and a paramedic for 31 years, told me, “I have seen many dead people in my lifetime, and when I walked in and saw you, I was sure you were gone.” How could the heart of a healthy, athletic young man suddenly stop—three times in one night? Doctors ran every test imaginable, and had no answers. “There’s nothing wrong with you,” Dr. Darbar said. “Your heart is completely normal. You are the healthiest person I have ever seen...inside and out!” So how does going to the other side change your life? It certainly changes your perspective on the real meaning of life. You realize what cliches are sincerely true. For example, quality really is much more valuable than quantity. Laughter is priceless. Happiness is a choice. And there is nothing, anywhere, in any way, more important, more powerful, or greater than love!

Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C. Canada
Repeatedly listed as the #1 resort in North America, Whistler was host to the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. The two mountains provide more than enough enjoyment for all skill levels. Recently Whistler Blackcomb unveiled plans for a major lift expansion with an expected opening of two new lifts at the beginning of the 2013-2014 winter season!
2
Mammoth Mountain, California U.S.A.
A short trek from Los Angeles, Mammoth Mountain has amazing parks, three award-winning halfpipes, and great freeriding. With over a 150 trails it’s one of the biggest resorts in America. Mammoth receives heavy snowfall throughout the season, and riding is often possible into June!
3
Davos, Switzerland
There are five different mountains within the region to choose from with over 200 Miles of terrain. We recommend Jakobshorn, which is the home of the main terrain park and features two well-groomed halfpipes, or Parsenn for some great freeriding. January features O’Neill Evolution, a 6-Star Big Air contest and 5-Star Halfpipe contest!
4
St. Anton, Austria
A social playground, ideal for freeriders! Get in Arlberg ski pass and ride from the linked areas of St. Christoph and Stuben, to the resorts Lech and Zürs by bus. Slope-side bars feature open terraces and begin to fill up by mid-day, while the pedestrianized main street of St. Anton’s Village offers cafés, restaurants, and sports shops.
5
Serre Chevalier, France
Located between a few old French villages in the southern French Alps is one of the best places to ride in France, Serre Chevalier. The terrain really makes this park special. There are sweeping banks, large bowls, fast flats to fly, daring drop-offs, and great natural movement. The boarding area runs along the Le Grand Serre Chevalier range.

Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado U.S.A.
With four separate peaks, Snowmass has a vertical rise of 4,406 feet, the highest in the U.S.A. Freeriders Frenzy over the serious terrain of Hanging Valley and Cirque. Freestylers opt for two halfpipes (the main halfpipe is 500 ft. long) and three terrain parks. In the unlikely event that a rider should run out of things to do, Vail is a short two hour drive away.
7
Gulmarg, India
For adventure seekers only! Gulmarg Resort’s lift tops out just over 13,000 feet with the summit of Mt. Apharwat being even taller at 13,780 ft. If you can bear the thin air you’ll find unlimited terrain that includes alpine bowls, chutes, cornices, and flying through ancient pines. Board down for a closer look at the local shrines and villages.
8
Treble Cone, New Zealand
With over 40% advanced terrain, Treble Cone offers a lot of vert to conquer. Freeriders will love the Powder Bowl, a wide arching slope into the lower gullies. In the Saddle Basin boarders will find natural hits and halfpipes such as the Gun Barrel. The mountain also features some big arching pistes, and large rock formations.
9
Arpa, Chile
The two valleys of Ski Arpa are full of naturally ideal conditions in the shadow of Aconcagua Mountain, the highest peak in the Americas. There are no prepared slopes and riders ascend the mountain by two Pisten Bully Snowcats (capacity of 22 riders). Ski Arpa is on all natural snow, with no snow-making machines. Go all natural mid-June to mid-October in Chile!
10 Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan Niseko links three different areas; An’nupuri, Higashiyama, and Grand under the same lift pass. Free-riding is the main draw here with about 45 feet of snow annually due to winter storms off Siberia. Niseko is also famous for off-piste, night snowboarding, and a great view of Mt.Yotei, a dormant conical shaped volcano.

MID-CITY ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
G
eoffrey Gutman was born in Metro Detroit. At 18, he
moved to Jerusalem for school and now lives in Los Angeles. His influences are Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky, Salvador Dali, street art, and the adventure that is life. Gutman doesn’t use any rulers or straight edges when painting. All of his work is done freehand. Music also plays a very large role in his creative process, as it sets the mood and influences how a painting will turn out. Everything from Air, The Clash, David Bowie, T. Rex, Joy Division, and most often Interpol will be heard blasting through his headphones while he paints. He often scares his neighbors with his foot pounding passion and off-key singing, but they have given up asking what’s going on for the sake of art. His art will be shown soon at Co-Lab Gallery. The first steps into HIP Studio and you can’t help but smile. Doused in bright colors, orange and blue, it’s immediately energizing. Motivating words of strength and inspiration stenciled on the walls make HIP a haven of hard work, sweat, and community. Although it’s not all about happy decor and motivational quotes; owners Christine Crivello and Amber Susa Jewett drive a hard class with high standards. “Our clients, from beginners to athletes, want intensity,” they say. And they deliver. Some people find traditional Pilates a bit slow, but HIP Studio takes an athletic approach and turns it up to eleven. At HIP Studio, every instructor has their Pilates certification, in addition to a variety of other fitness certifications. These killer workouts come with an addicting sweat and burn, delivered by a knowledgeable staff that will safely modify any exercise. Adding Pilates to your routine will change your body. Adding High Intensity Pilates™ can maximize calorie burn, define abs, sculpt legs, tone arms and strengthen your overall well-being for a stronger, sexier you.
Their High Intensity Pilates™ lives up to its namesake using custom reformer machines to allow more exercises than Joseph Pilates himself could think of. These HIPformers are made from eco-friendly renewable wood and require less maintenance. Clients feel secure during workouts. Everyone gets a smooth ride. Variations of HIP’s signature Pilates class are offered, each with their own unique pieces of flare. One with an extreme cardio session on the trampoline, another uses the jumpboard to elevate the heart rate and target abdominals, and one incorporates a lengthened stretch. Any of them may have you cursing the woman with the stopwatch minutes into class, but in the best way. In addition to their signature High Intensity Pilates™ classes, HIP offers Yoga, Barre, Kickboxing, Zumba and their exclusive Bag of Tricks™ class; Light weights, TRX (suspension training), playground balls, even trampolines are incorporated to give each class a high intensity edge that’s different every time. Rebounding, dancing, sweating, sculpting and punching with intensity for whatever workout your body craves that day. HIP Studio makes it easy to cross-train, not only across their weekly schedule but also within each class.

The sense of community is infectious and inspiring. The 10 minutes between each 50-minute calorie crushing session fills with conversation and laughter. The instructors take the time to learn each client’s name, answer any questions and are always up for a chat. The mission at HIP Studio is to create a space that offers something for everyone with high intensity training to build lean muscle and reshape bodies. But it’s more than just that. It’s a place to take your training to the next level, shape up and transform, a feel-better place, a place to connect to your body and celebrate all it can do. HIP is a place to surprise yourself, let go, dance, explore, rejuvenate. Life’s high intensity, so shouldn’t your workout be too?
Heath and fitness gets personal at HIP. When Christine and Amber founded HIP Studio in 2011, they were over the gym scene and having multiple memberships for specialty classes. They wanted to create a place they would want to go to, where

their friends and family could call home. The HIP family reaches beyond the studio walls to help their clients achieve personal goals. Clients are seeing great results beyond workouts too. The HIP 90-Day Clean Eating Challenge has members exchanging stories and recipes online while feeling energized and empowered as they embrace their new clean eating lifestyle. HIP monthly newsletters and online presence provide information about health and fitness as well as a platform for HIPsters to connect with one another.

Craig’s Automotive By Scott Bailey Photography by David Mitchell
Swoop Magazine’s pick for (The Best Place to get your car fixed) neighbor’s advice, I took my car into Craig’s Automotive and was greeted by a friendly guy named Byron, whose father opened the shop. They fixed my truck, and when I got the bill it was cheaper than I expected. Everyone from the Swoop office has been going to Craig’s Automotive ever since. That is why Craig’s Automotive is Swoop’s pick for “The Best Place to Get Your Car Fixed”! Although Craig’s Automotive has the experience to fix most any car, they specialize in classic cars, which Byron prefers to work on because of their uniqueness and beauty. They

also work on electric cars, if you happen to be part of the small, but growing population that has one. Swoop actually has an electric car, a gem car, so it’s nice to know there is someone trustworthy and conveniently located that can work on it. So if you live anywhere in the South Bay, or even if you don’t, it would be a safe bet to bring any of your maintenance or repair needs to Craig’s Automotive. You might see me there if you do. I’ll be hanging out with Byron talking about which project we’re going to work on next with the truck I’m restoring.

Living in Southern California, we all have a car (perhaps even 2 or 3), and car problems are inevitable. When something happens to my car, the first thing I think is, “Can’t I just find a trustworthy place to fix my car?”. True story — when my truck broke down in El Segundo, I desperately asked my neighbor where I should take it to get checked out. He said, “Go to Craig’s Automotive!”. My neighbor had previously checked three different places and they had the best prices and great reviews. He continued his rave review, saying it is a family business and he and everyone in the area trusts them with their cars. Following my trusted

MotoArt
is the manufacturer of functional art pieces from straight out of your wildest futuristic fantasy. Compilations of cool steel lines and undulating chrome are fashioned into tangible works of art. MotoArt creates everything from a piston desk watch for the heavy metal business man, to a massive conference table made from the wing flaps of a C130 Hercules. Upon entering the showroom of MotoArt, one may feel they have walked into a sexy futuristic film, an ultra modern Tokyo lounge, or maybe one of the Black Eyed Peas dressing rooms. First of all, it is bewildering and fascinating to see something that belongs on an airstrip, fixated indoors, and shined to an intoxicating gleam. The pieces created by MotoArt are awe-inspiring, and amusingly full of surprise in the discoveries of the origins of the components. A

rock star, machinist style reverberates from every flashy piece. One work of art more exciting than the next. Then comes Dave. One might expect a dark, hulking, brooding man, with gnarled black claws for hands, and maybe tattooed-on eyebrows. This is indeed not the case. Dave is a brightly blue eyed, amiable guy. As personable and professional a businessman one would ever have the pleasure of meeting. Dave, easy to smile, with a mellow Southern California demeanor, is the kind of guy you could see running into at a beach bonfire, or maybe sharing laughs with over an adult beverage. The impression of Dave’s good nature is compounded when you meet his ridiculously amiable golden retriever Milo. Milo, amidst the cacophony of metal sanders, cutters, blow-torches and what have you in the shop, is Buddhist monkserene. His tail perpetually thumps the floor in utter satisfaction. Milo, as it seems, is an extension of Dave. Twelve years ago, Dave Hall and Donovan Fell III, both worked for a sign and fabrication company that made products for clients such as Disneyland. Donovan, a bit of a hobbyist, rescued a vintage propeller blade from a twisted metal scrap heap. Donovan took the propeller, shined it up, and placed it vertically on a stand. He then installed lighting effects into the stand to throw off shadows and shimmers from this perfectly curved piece of

historical metal. Thus, Propeller Art was born. Donovan’s friend Dave Hall was impressed by the end result, and being the sales and marketing wiz that he is, suggested they start doing trade shows with Propeller Art. They visited such shows as the Rose Bowl swap meet, and gained popularity with the flashy Art Deco designs. Soon, Maxim magazine caught wind of the sexy, unimaginably modern designs.
Mile High Bed Model 6
Maxim completed an editorial on Propeller Art, along with a risquĂŠ photo shoot including sexbomb models leaning up against the cool metal of the propeller blades. This was the real beginning. The attention Maxim brought sky rocketed sales and interest. Many editorials came to follow. Propeller Art merged into MotoArt, and then gained rock star status when Dave and Donovan

landed a television show on the Discovery Channel. The art pieces became larger, and more impressive. Dave and Donovan (both never having taken art lessons), designed mechanically originated, functional pieces, usually birthed from aviation. Producers from the Discovery Channel agreed that the creation of this unique work, and the fun atmosphere of their shop, would make a popular show.

The show Wing Nuts aired 8 episodes, which took around 200 hours of round the clock filming per one episode. Dave’s and Donvan’s lives changed very much with this monstrous publicity. All of a sudden people were asking for autographs, and their business went hugely international. While they had started in a 100 sq. foot roll-up garage, they moved into a much larger studio and workshop in Torrance. From day one, every piece has been manufactured as one of a kind, and MotoArt can create just about anything a customer can conjure up. For instance, a huge 3 1/2 foot diameter champagne bucket for a gentleman in Italy, or a ridiculously chic looking 34-foot bar made for a client in China. Sixty percent of MotoArt’s orders are international. They ship as far as Japan and the Middle East.
Swoop [ Art ]
Eventually the Torrance location was not enough for the amount, and the style of orders Moto Art had coming in. In 2011, MotoArt made yet another move to a 20,000 sq. foot facility in El Segundo. Today, MotoArt’s client include General Electric, American Idol, Boeing, Red Bull, Disney, Fred Segal, and many more. Moto Art has a piece on the top floor of the Sears Tower. It seems very befitting that one of the tallest buildings in the world holds a piece of aviation history where it belongs‌way up high.

Facing criminal charges is an urgent matter. You need the immediate attention of an experienced Los Angeles criminal defense attorney to provide you with the aggressive legal representation you need. When your future is on the line, a criminal lawyer will be your only hope. Taking immediate advantage of your right to legal counsel and your right to remain silent will mean that you can work to avoid self-incrimination and can offer your lawyer a better opportunity of seeking a positive case result on your behalf.

Our team is experienced in all areas of criminal defense, and we will fight for you if you face charges of a drug offense, grand theft, or arson. The vast reach of the internet means that white collar and computer crimes are all the more common. State and federal law enforcement agencies harshly prosecute those suspected of such crimes as fraud, forgery, and insider trading. Law enforcement is especially severe in prosecuting those they believe are involved in child pornography, and will use their endless resources in an attempt to convict. Many white collar crimes are federal offenses, and conviction can result in enormous fines and lengthy incarceration in a federal detention facility. If you are charged with such crimes as extortion, consumer fraud, or a RICO act violation, you must be confident that your attorney has the skills and experience needed to successfully fight your charges. Are you charged with a sex crime?

Giving Driftwood a New Life
nthony Smith creates customized furniture and artwork for high-end clients. He has been working on custom homes since 1990. He finds working with driftwood to be fascinating because of its unique quality and texture, due to conditioning by the ocean. In this article, he describes the inspiration and process for creating his stunning artwork. I grew up in England, so living in California is something special to me. I love everything about the beach. I go down there just to enjoy the waves crashing against the shoreline or to reconnect with Mother Nature, maybe going out on a boat or just simply to swim and enjoy. The beach has a huge spiritual meaning to me and gives me a special feeling inside. My energy is so uplifted after being at the beach, so for me to get involved with driftwood was a no-brainer. Finding a piece of driftwood and giving it a new life by turning it into a beautiful piece of art gives me great satisfaction. Instead of leaving it to rot and decay on the beach, I get to watch the driftwood transform into its new life, and that is something special. Clients let me design and build based on what their needs are. For example, for one project, I got a call from a client who was looking for something extra for her newly constructed bar. The contractor did a fantastic job on the bar, but something was missing. The bar was complete but lacked life. I went to her ranch in Santa Barbara and designed and built a custom art piece out of driftwood that gave her that extra touch that she was looking for.
94
| swoopmagazine.com | spring 2013
Driftwood is such a relaxing material to work with. The process begins in finding the right pieces on the beach. I go for a drive down by the ocean, looking to see if any new wood has drifted up on the shoreline, or sometimes I just go to my favorite spot. Once I find my pieces, I bring them to my shop and start to build something with them. Making my circles is the most time consuming process. I slice the driftwood down into 1/2’’ circles and glue them one by one on the work surface. I then let the wood dry overnight. The next day, I sand the wood down to prepare it for varnishing. After 3 coats of varnish, the grouting begins, which is very similar to tile grouting. This also needs to dry overnight, and then I finish off with another 3 coats of varnish to protect the finished piece from the elements. It is wise to collect the driftwood that has just washed up on the beach rather than take the wood that has been there forever, as I am not one to disturb the living creatures that make driftwood their home.
