Sometimes programs are canceled because people wait too long to sign up. All programs have minimum attendance. By registering at least 2 weeks in advance of a program, you ensure we our program minimum, and give us adequate time to prepare for you. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

REFUNDS & CREDITS 1. Full refunds will be given for all classes canceled by SWPRD. 2. Refunds requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be subject to a 10% service fee, with a minimum service fee of $10.

3. SWPRD account credits requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be good for one calendar year from issue date, for the full fee paid and will not be subject to service fee.

Advance registration is required for all programs unless otherwise stated. It is best if you register at least two weeks in advance of any program start date.

All fees are due at the time of registration.

We cannot “hold” a space for you without full payment and registration.

All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. We request that you register early to ensure class minimums are met. We reserve the right to cancel a program if minimums are not met.

There is a $25 service charge on all returned checks and declined credit cards.

HIYI YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Healthy Island Youth Initiative (HIYI) Committee solicits donations to support ongoing efforts to keep organized healthy activities affordable for all local youth in Island County. The HIYI Scholarship Fund addresses these needs by helping cover the cost of registration fees, equipment and/or other expenses so that youth in Island County can participate in organized physical activities, regardless of their family’s economic status. The South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, is the fiscal agent for HIYI, and receives, holds and distributes funds upon direction from the HIYI committee. Donations to this fund may now be tax deductible. Donations to the scholarship fund should be made payable to South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, and should be mailed to PO Box 157, Freeland, WA 98249, with a note on the memo line directing it to the “HIYI Scholarship Fund”. Any Whidbey Island youth may apply for assistance to participate in any organized sport or physical activity. The needs-based scholarships are awarded based on financial criteria and commitment to the activity. The South Whidbey School District has Early Release Days most Wednesdays.

We’ve pulled together a couple of programs to coincide with those days.

ART CLUB Early Release Wednesdays!

GRADES 2-4 A place for children to have fun making art, explore ideas, stimulate curiosity and build skills using a variety of methods and art materials. Students will learn foundational skills of drawing and painting while developing confidence in expressing their imagination and how they see the world. All art materials will be provided.

Want to learn how to fly fish in a fun, lowkey environment? This class will teach you everything you need to know to get started fly fishing. We’ll cover fly tying, casting techniques, regulations, and end with a fishing trip. Women are strongly encouraged to sign up!

Supplies: Fly rod, reel, and line will be supplied if needed, just indicate at registration. Students will need to purchase a 1-day combo fishing license for the fishing day ($12 at Sebo’s).

PICK-UP BASKETBALL

PICKLEBALL ADULTS, ALL LEVELS WELCOME Pick up a paddle and try a new sport! Due to popular demand, we’re bringing you one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, Pickleball. This fun and social game was created on Bainbridge Island, and is described as a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton. Played on a small court with a low net, it uses whiffle balls and paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Pickleball is FUN. Stay active with us, it is a great work out.

OUTDOOR NAVIGATION FOR INTERMEDIATES Putting navigation skills to use

ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 10+ In this intermediate follow-on to the orienteering intro course (Exploring is Awesome), we take your new map navigation skills into a larger park. Explore Putney Woods as you navigate with a contour map, get familiar with a compass, learn to “relocate”, and more. After some preliminary training, you’ll complete a course in the park at your own speed. Also good for refreshing orienteering skills if you haven’t been to an event in a while.

The intro course offered the day before is not required, but is recommended for novice or young map readers to ease the learning curve.

Bring: Outdoor shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and compass if you have one.

Basketball skills development program

Join us for these exciting sessions of indoor soccer, the fast-paced game. Kids will have lots of fun developing their skills, touches and teamwork whilst playing soccer. Lots of running involved and therefore it’s a great way to keep active during winter. All ability levels are welcome. Please bring normal athletic shoes (no cleats) and wear good active clothing. Limited space available so register early.

GRADES 1 & 2, FIRST TIMERS

The goal of Road Runners Club of America is to see a youth running club in every school and community in the U.S. Each meeting we will have short discussions regarding health and fitness followed by physical activity.

We will focus on proper form, running etiquette, stretching, warming up, cooling down and fun. Every day we’ll head out on the trails and fields of Community Park. Be prepared to participate rain or shine, and help create a supportive environment for your teammates. Coach can meet students at the SWES South Campus flagpole after school, and escort them to the program.

Little Dribblers focuses on the basics of basketball and is a fun first introduction to the game. Players will learn passing, shooting, dribbling and basic rules. Focus is on respect, teamwork and responsibility.

This is not a basketball league and players will not be assigned to teams. Some Little Dribblers may choose to continue on to our Youth Basketball League this Winter.

Coach can meet students at the SWES North Campus flagpole after school to walk them to class, if needed. Please indicate this at registration and notify the school via “PickUp Patrol.”

Reading with Rover

ADULTS AND YOUTH 12+*

GRADES 2-4 Kids will learn and practice the basic strokes of tennis and will be playing points after just a few sessions. The focus is developing good technique and having lots of fun–sportsmanship is always taught and modeled. Players of all abilities are welcome.

Coaches can meet SWES students at the flagpole after school and will walk together to the South Whidbey Elementary South Campus Gym. Students will have a few minutes to eat a snack if they choose to bring one. Loaner racquets and all equipment will be provided.

READING WITH ROVER THERAPY DOGS Reading with Rover is a therapy dog program which started out as a communitybased literacy program volunteering in the schools and libraries of the Puget Sound area. They now offer the comfort of our therapy dogs at local hospitals, assisted living homes, rehabilitation facilities and are very popular college stress relievers! Instructor Diana Trupiano has owned and trained dogs all her life. For the past 15 years she has been an active member of Reading with Rover children’s literacy charity. She currently holds the positions of volunteer, event coordinator, team evaluator, team protocol mentor, therapy team evaluator and therapy prep instructor. needlebeetle@comcast.net

This class will help prepare you and your dog to successfully take the Reading with Rover therapy test. Once you have passed the test, you will become a registered therapy team.

Our teams volunteer in schools, nursing homes, hospitals (hospital and hospice visits require additional training).

REACTIVE DOG CLINIC Work with your dog to gain confidence in social interactions

ADULTS* Join us for this opportunity to work with others who also own reactive dogs, to gain confidence, calm, and capability. Teach your dog (and yourself ) the self-confidence and the skills needed to relax, focus, and enjoy being around others – people, dogs, other animals and activities.

Instructor: Mark Helpenstell has been training his own dogs for 50+years. Mark has worked with hunting/retrieving dogs, stock dogs, and people’s pets. In the past 5 years, he has become an advocate of Positive Reinforcement Training, and is working with dogs, donkeys, mules, and cats. Mark volunteers at WAIF, and one of his dogs is a WAIF “Ambassadog” at most of their events. Mark is largely self-taught, but has completed an Animal Behavior Certification course, and has been a participant in many on-line and in-person courses. Mark got involved in donkey and mule rescue about 9 years ago, and has been Click’r Training to rescue/recover frightened, confused and difficult animals. Pay: Minimum wage to $15/hour, DOE. SWPRD is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic person to assist us in our recreation programs. Focus is on our youth basketball programs, but will include other programs including dodgeball, 5k races, triathlon, special events, and more. Ideal candidate loves the game of basketball and has experience in other sports as well. The position works with youth, adults, volunteers, coaches, and referees.

Basketball programs run October– March, will occasionally assist with other recreation programs as needed. Duties may include locking/unlocking gyms, keeping score, and ensuring that facilities are left in good condition.

This is seasonal, part-time position.
