Applicants
Any Whidbey Island youth may apply for the assistance to participate in any organized sport or physical activity. Oyster Gardening Learn to cultivate these seafood gems!
ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 16+ Discover the fun and satisfaction of cultivating your own oyster garden on your beach. You will learn about suitable beaches, gear used, oyster types, and health and environmental considerations. You will assemble gear for your garden and receive oyster seed to begin growing oysters. The class will be held over three weekend days, including a visit to an oyster garden and classroom time. Gardening experience is very helpful and will help you understand the attention required to maintain your oyster garden. What to bring: boots for beach, gloves, weather appropriate attire, and pictures of your own beach. Participants should have access to a private beach suitable for oyster growing, either through ownership or agreement with the owner. Suitable beaches have a firm gravel or cobble substrate at the 0 to +4 foot tide level and are not exposed to excessive wave action. Sandy beaches are less suitable but can grow oysters for a gardener determined to put in more work. Many suitable beaches are found in Holmes Harbor and Saratoga Passage. Class meets over 3 days
*Additional materials fee of $170, to be collected at second session after determining suitability of your beach for an oyster garden. Materials fee provides 10 oyster bags, 500 oyster seed, and all gear for securing bags to the beach.

South Whidbey Learn to Swim AGES 4+, BEGINNING-ADVANCED Learn to swim in a heated, outdoor swimming pool at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. South Whidbey Learn to Swim Lessons teach aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our objective is to teach children to be safe in and around water, have fun, and learn basic swimming skills. Children can progress through 5 levels of swimming and safety skills. All classes except session 1 will participate in Safety Day. Each class will talk about age appropriate safety skills as it pertains to pools, beaches, and boating. Students will experience wearing life jackets. New: This summer we have added a short, 4-day session at the beginning of the summer as a refresher course when swimmers will have the opportunity to review skills that they were taught the previous summer. Registration: Students progress through levels at different speeds depending on several factors including their age, physical coordination and comfort in and around the water. When registering for multiple sessions at the start of the summer season keep in mind that your child may need to repeat a specific level before moving up. Level 1 and Level 3 often need to be repeated. If you are not sure what level your child should be in visit www.swparks.com for Class Descriptions and Skills. § If your child is registered for a level that is not appropriate for his/her skills we will make every effort to place that child in the correct class only if there is a vacancy. If there is no vacancy a refund may be necessary. Classes are filled on a first-come first served basis. There will be no makeup days due to personal reasons or weather conditions. We reserve the right to change the levels and times based on number of students enrolled.

surrounding South Whidbey is a delightful experience when the challenges of open water are safely managed. Whether you are a new swimmer, a triathlete, or interested in endurance swimming, come learn techniques or refresh your skills for mastering the open water. Enjoy swimming in your own backyard! The freshwater clinic in Goss Lake is a great way for triathlon swimmers to refresh open water racing skills and those who are new to open water swimming. The saltwater clinic is ideal for swimmers who are looking to take advantage of the wonderful saltwater swimming opportunities here on the island. Note, the Whidbey Adventure Swim (August 22) is an open water event in the Sound that may be of interest for stronger swimmers. Info at: http://ow.swhidbey.org/. Course topics covered in both classes, but customized for the aquatic environment (sound or lake): • Sighting Techniques • Starts, Finishes & Turns • Pacing for the Open Water • Breathing Techniques • Swimming Safety • Training & Fueling • Open Water Swim Gear • Wetsuits 101: Sizing, Choosing, Dressing • Currents & Tides, Weather & Critters • ‘Getting Past the Panic’ Clinic benefits the South Whidbey Parks and Aquatics Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to make parks and aquatics activities accessible to all residents of the South Whidbey Island community by raising money to fund capital expenses, operating endowments and scholarships as well as supporting new and existing parks and aquatics programs.
