SPORTS FOR DOGS Location: Outdoors in the small field immediately inside the north entrance of Community Park, and indoors at “The Doghouse” at Community Park.
CANINE GAMES IN THE PARK
Instructor: Victoria Farrington took her unruly terrier to a seminar in 1995 and became an early adopter, explorer and explainer of positive reinforcement dog training. She has volunteered in shelters, done rescue and foster work, and taught classes at large clubs, small facilities and as private lessons. She wrote for and later became editor of The Clicker Journal, earning the respect of the field’s top professional dog trainers. Her dogs have earned titles in 10 dog sports at all stages of life. howsofdogs@gmail.com
Summer Games in the Park
Min 2/Max 8
HUMANS 16+; DOGS 6+ MONTHS, BEGINNERS
Tue | May 15–June 26* | 6–7:30pm | $75**
Try a fresh approach to training and entertaining your dog: playing games in the park. How fast is your dog’s recall? Can you call it away from a caged ham? Interested in teaching your dog to negotiate an obstacle course? Want to improve its public manners? We’ve designed a variety of games to educate and entertain while embracing the best practices of positive reinforcement dog training: short sessions, high rate of reinforcement, measurable criteria, and record keeping. Some of our games have serious goals, based on important life skills like reliable recalls and greeting strangers. Others are centered on dog sports skills for agility, barn hunt, and rally. Some are just plain silly. We’ll offer as many as we can fit into an evening; you chose the ones you want. For most games, you and your dog will be alone in a fully fenced ring, then move onto the next. For some, like public walking and greeting behaviors, we’ll slowly create a crowd your dog can successfully negotiate. Most games will take no more than a minute, and we’ll measure or time your accomplishments, keeping records so you can track your progress. You’re strongly encouraged to use anything and everything you need to succeed: praise, treats, toys, dinner bowls and applause. We want you and your dog to find that training’s just a walk in the park! Bring to Class: Treats and toys, a nonrestraining collar and a 6’ leash are required. A harness and portable crate are recommended.
*Except May 29. **Fee is per dog.
CANINE SPORTS SAMPLER Old dogs, new tricks.
HUMANS 16+; DOGS 6+ MONTHS, BEGINNERS This is the golden age of dog sports with more ways than ever before to deepen your bond, have fun, and earn titles and ribbons. This class will give you a taste of Parkour, Rally, Agility, Barn hunt, Tracking and Tricks training. Activities will be safe foundation behaviors suitable for dogs and people at all levels of physical fitness. Included for each sport will be information about how to follow up on your new interests. Must provide evidence of basic vaccinations. Mixed breeds and rescues are welcome. No previous obedience training required but dogs will sometimes be working near each other. You must be able to control your dog on leash and get its attention with food. Class will be tailored to weather conditions and dog temperament. Depending upon the activity, dogs may be worked one at a time. Bring to Class: Treats, a buckle collar and a 6’ leash are required. A harness and portable crate or mat are recommended and will be discussed in class. Toys will be used. Location: “The Doghouse” at Community Park and outdoors. Instructor: Victoria Farrington (see Canine Games in the Park), howsofdogs@gmail.com

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN Charm school for your dog!
HUMANS 16+; DOGS 6+ MONTHS, BEGINNERS Do you wish your dog were more courteous? Or better behaved in public? Learn how to teach your dog good manners using the power of positive reinforcement and games you’ll both enjoy. We’ll work on polite greetings, loose leash walking, being handled, and meeting strangers, with an emphasis on self-control, patience and cooperation. Prepare your dog to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, learn how to address problem behaviors and teach a few cute tricks along the way. This class is for dogs who are rude or uneducated, not for those who are aggressive or fearful. Dogs will sometimes be working near each other, so you must be able to physically control your dog on leash and get its attention with food. Bring to Class: Treats, buckle collar, and a 6’ leash required. A harness and portable crate or mat are recommended and will be discussed in class. Toys will be used. K9 NOSEWORK Sniffing out fun on Whidbey
HUMANS 16+; DOGS 4+ MONTHS (ALL VACCINATIONS COMPLETED) This fast–growing dog sport teaches you how to encourage and develop your dog’s amazing natural scenting ability by using its desire to hunt and its love of food, toys, and exercise. This exciting detection style activity is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed, or physical ability and handlers of all ages and abilities. Each dog works separately, one at a time, so this is a class for dogs unsuited for a group setting. Classes are offered at all levels, from beginning to advanced dog handler teams.
