REFUNDS & CREDITS 1. Full refunds will be given for all classes cancelled by SWPRD. 2. Refunds requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be subject to a 10% service fee, with a minimum service fee of $10.

3. SWPRD account credits requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be good for one calendar year from issue date, for the full fee paid and will not be subject to service fee.

4. Refunds or credits will not be issued if cancelled after deadline date or within 5 business days of program start.

5. To request a refund, a Refund Request Form must be submitted to the SWPRD office in writing. Verbal requests will not be honored. Forms are available at the SWPRD office or online. Please be aware that refund requests may take up to 45 days to process.

7. Refunds will not be issued for programs costing $10 or less (unless cancelled by SWPRD).

OYSTER GARDENING Learn to cultivate these seafood gems!

ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 16+ Discover the fun and satisfaction of cultivating your own oyster garden on your beach. Learn about suitable beaches, gear, oyster types, and health and environmental considerations. You will assemble gear for your garden and receive oyster seed to begin growing oysters. The 3-day class will include a visit to an oyster garden and classroom time. Gardening experience is very helpful and will help you understand the attention required to maintain your oyster garden. Participants should have access to a private beach suitable (details online) for oyster growing, either through ownership or agreement with the owner.

Instructor: Kurt Johnson has spent over 30 years in the shellfish farming industry from owning a mussel and oyster farm to developing nursery and grow-out systems for mussels, oysters, scallops and geoducks in the US, Mexico and Canada. He has also provided biological services for shellfish farming of clams, mussels, oysters, and geoducks. SIGN LANGUAGE ALL AGES, KIDS W/ ADULT Sign language is a living language and a beautiful way of communicating. Young and older adults, Moms who want to teach their baby signs, as well as hard-ofhearing individuals will enjoy learning how to communicate without using speech.

The deaf in our community are able to communicate with anybody with this beautifully designed language.

Instructor: Susan Ishikawa is a certificated Teacher of Deaf and Severely-Hard-ofHearing, with a BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology and is a certified Sign Language

SPORTS FOR DOGS: K–9 NOSEWORK Sniffing out fun on Whidbey

HUMANS AGE 16+; DOGS AGE 4+ MONTHS (OR ALL VACCINATIONS COMPLETED) This fast–growing dog sport teaches you how to encourage and develop your dog’s amazing natural scenting ability by using its desire to hunt and its love of food, toys, and exercise. This exciting detection style activity is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed, or physical ability and handlers of all ages and abilities. Each dog works separately, one at a time, so this is a class for dogs unsuited for a group setting. Classes are offered at all levels, from beginning to advanced dog handler teams. Programs are on-going and held Wednesdays and Sundays; dates later in summer will be determined in June.

Instructor: Georgia Edwards is a nationallyCertified NoseWork Instructor. A retired cancer physician, she first became interested in canine scent discrimination 25 years ago when her hospital therapy dog was able to identify patients with metastatic breast cancer. k9nosework@whidbey.net Location: Varies; classes meet in classrooms and outdoors; advanced classes may be held off-site on “field-trips.”

BEGINNING GUITAR Have fun learning to play acoustic guitar!

ADULTS & YOUTH 16+ Gain a solid foundation and the tools to play thousands of songs using traditional and contemporary sources. Learn fundamental chords, progressions, strums and fingerpicking. By the end of this course, you will have the resources to play many songs in different styles.

Beginning guitar is geared toward folks who have no guitar playing experience and would like to sample playing guitar.

This class also makes a great refresher for those with some playing experience. Loaner guitars are available, reserve prior to the first class. All materials included! Kids under 16 welcome if accompanied by a parent.

Instructor: Quinn Fitzpatrick has had a successful career for over 15 years both as a professional musician and guitar teacher.

He came to Whidbey Island to focus on composing, recording and promoting his solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar music. He is a versatile, encouraging and patient instructor who teaches all styles, ages and levels.

FIRST AID & CPR YOUTH AGES 14+ AND ADULTS In this course, you will learn and practice how to effectively recognize and respond to medical emergencies in the critical first minutes until emergency medical services arrive. These skills include American Heart Association CPR (for adults, children, and infants), First Aid, and use of an AED. Those who successfully complete the course will earn their AHA CPR/FA card.

MODEL ROCKETS Calling future astronauts & rocket scientists!

AGES 9-13, YOUNGER OK WITH AN ADULT Learn science by creating and launching your own model rockets! Tuesday and Wednesday, we will assemble and finish a complete 20-inch model rocket.

Thursday will be launch day, when you are encouraged to bring along a camera and your fan club to document your rocket’s first flight! Rockets will be made from a

Join artists from Jack’d Skimboards to learn the basic techniques for painting with acrylic, watercolor, pencil, pen, airbrush, and screen printing. Each participant will be provided with a blank skimboard; the magic begins as each student creates their own masterpiece using one or all of the techniques available. At the end of class the boards will be finished by members of Jack’d and then will be available for pickup 2–3 weeks after class. YOUTH SPRING TENNIS GRADES 2-8 Learn and practice the basic strokes of tennis and be playing points within just a few sessions! The focus is on developing good technique and having lots of fun–sportsmanship is always taught and modeled! Players of all abilities are welcome.

Grades 6-8 will learn singles and doubles strategy. Coach can meet SWES students at the flagpole after school, and together they will walk to the Primary School Gym. Loaner racquets and all equipment will be provided.

Play Ultimate Frisbee and participate in tournaments around the Puget Sound with a new South Whidbey youth team! Ultimate combines the continuous movement and endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, and the goal of completing a pass to a player in the end zone.

Whidbey Island Junior Tennis League is the perfect place to learn and play tennis with friends this summer! Players ages 6-10 will do large group warm ups and then be divided according to ability and age for drilling and match play. The focus is on skill development, sportsmanship and fun! Players ages 11+ will be matched up with equal-level opponents for match play.

Reduce both your waste and your waist by turning non-recyclable household items into workout equipment such as Medicine Balls, Agility Ladders, Cones, Dumbbells and Exercise Cards. After creating our new equipment, learn some basic movements and join in for a short workout. Have fun in your fitness and reduce your waist by reducing your waste!

We’re natural-born explorers; all we need is a lively intro to map reading techniques to open up adventures in our local parks. INTRO TO KAYAKING ADULTS This course is designed for both the casual paddler and those interested in ocean touring. While the course is perfect for the beginner, anyone who has never had formal instruction will benefit from this class.

We’ll cover: types of craft, outfitting & gear, transport, best launch sites on Whidbey, and some basic current, tide, and weather.

We will also teach safe ways to enter and exit a kayak, self and assisted rescue skills and basic paddle strokes. Participants must be comfortable with deep, over-your-head water while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) and having some upper-body strength will make some exercises easier.

Participants will get wet! This class is an excellent intro to kayaking, but does not imply any certification or infer any skill qualification.

Bring: A hat with a brim, a towel, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. Please wear comfortable clothes/layers that can get wet (synthetic fabrics; not cotton) and/ or a bathing suit. Wetsuits/drysuits are recommended but not required. A thermos with a warm drink for after the class is recommended. In addition to sailing, students learn boating safety, basic seamanship and knot tying. The focus is on sailing and having fun. Safety is our priority. Each student will be assigned their own boat. Sufficient staff will be on hand to ensure each participant receives personal attention. Extended program details are at swparks.org and a welcome message will be emailed about one week before the first class with last minute details and any updates.

Prerequisites: All sailors must demonstrate the ability to stay afloat for 2 minutes without a life jacket. Level 2 sailors must be 12+ years old and achieved a level 2 competency at the Beginner Level or by permission of the Program Administrator.

Location: The first morning of the Level 1 camp students will meet at the Honeymoon Lake Clubhouse for swim assessment and orientation. That afternoon and the rest of the days will be at Lone Lake Public Access (no transportation provided). Returning sailors do not need to be swim assessed again, but please do attend the orientation session. Parents and drivers are welcome to join us at this orientation class. Level 2 sailors will meet Monday, 11am at Lone Lake.
