HIYI YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Healthy Island Youth Initiative (HIYI) Committee solicits donations to support ongoing efforts to keep organized healthy activities affordable for all local youth in Island County. The HIYI Scholarship Fund addresses these needs by helping cover the cost of registration fees, equipment and/or other expenses so that youth in Island County can participate in organized physical activities, regardless of their family’s economic status. The South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, is the fiscal agent for HIYI, and receives, holds and distributes funds upon direction from the HIYI committee. Donations to this fund may now be tax deductible. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made payable to South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, and should be mailed to PO Box 157, Freeland, WA 98249, with a note on the memo line directing it to the “HIYI Scholarship Fund”. Any Whidbey Island youth may apply for assistance to participate in any organized sport or physical activity. The needs-based scholarships are awarded based on financial criteria and commitment to the activity. SCHOLARSHIP & INCLEMENT WEATHER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE & POWER OUTAGES FOR PROGRAMS Programs may be cancelled in the event of

1. Full refunds will be given for all classes cancelled by SWPRD. 2. Refunds requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be subject to a 10% service fee, with a minimum service fee of $10.

There are several needs-based resources available to enable youth to participate in programs with SWPRD. Call (360) 221-6788 for info.

SWPRD account credits requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be good for one calendar year from issue date, for the full fee paid and will not be subject to service fee. 4. Refunds or credits will not be issued if cancelled after deadline date or within 5 business days of program start. 5. To request a refund, a Refund Request Form must be submitted to the SWPRD office in writing. Verbal requests will not be honored. Forms are available at the SWPRD office or online. Please be aware that refund requests may take up to 45 days to process. 6. Refunds will not be issued from an account credit. 7. Refunds will not be issued for programs costing $10 or less (unless cancelled by SWPRD). 8. One day classes, trips, or special events are not covered under this policy (no refunds or credits available). 9. Certain contract programs, indicated with this symbol: §, have their own refund policies. Contact the contractor directly to inquire about their specific policy.

It is best if you register at least two weeks in advance of any program start date. All fees are due at the time of registration. We cannot “hold” a space for you without full payment and registration. All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. We request that you register in advance to ensure class minimums are met. We reserve the right to cancel a program if minimums are not met.

Help Wanted RECREATION ASSISTANT Pay: Up to $15 per hour, DOE.

SWPRD is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic person to assist us in our recreation programs. Focus is on our basketball programs, but will include other programs including dodgeball, 5k race, triathlon, special events, and more. Ideal candidate loves the game of basketball and has experience in other sports as well. Rec assistant will help plan, promote and supervise our basketball programs. The position works with youth, adults, volunteers, coaches, and referees. Education and/or experience in recreation & youth work ideal. Basketball programs run October–March, will occasionally assist with other recreation programs as needed. This is seasonal, part-time position. AGES 7-11 Join us for an exciting session of indoor soccer, the fast-paced game, where kids and now parents too, can have lots of fun developing skills, touches and teamwork whilst playing soccer. Lots of running is going to be involved and therefore it’s a great way to keep active as winter sets in. All ability levels are welcome. Limited space available so register early. Bring: Athletic shoes (no cleats) and good, active clothing.

KIDS’ TENNIS TEAM GRADES 2-4

Kids will learn and practice the basic strokes of tennis and will be playing points after just a few sessions. The focus is developing good technique and having lots of fun–sportsmanship is always taught and modeled. Players of all abilities are welcome. Coaches will meet SWES students at the flagpole after school and will walk together to the Primary School Gym. Students will have a few minutes to eat a snack if they choose to bring one. Loaner racquets and all equipment will be provided.

The goal of Road Runners Club of America is to see a youth running club in every school and community in the U.S. Each meeting we will have short discussions regarding health and fitness followed by physical activity. We will focus on proper form, running etiquette, stretching, warming up, cooling, down and fun. Every day we’ll head out on the trails and fields of Community Park. Be prepared to participate rain or shine, and help create a supportive environment for your teammates. Coach can meet students at the SW South Campus flagpole after school, and escort them to the program. Runners should be able to walk/jog a mile in 12 minutes. SLOTH ARMY WALKING CLUB Does running for exercise seem overwhelming? Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to move and exercise in a low intensity setting? Let Sloth Army show you how much fun working out can be in an easy walking-centered routine. Focus on mobility exercises and low impact movement. Join the Sloth Army and see why when you go sloth, you never go back! If you want to start an exercise program but have hesitations due to mobility concerns or anxiety, this may be an excellent class to ease you into a fitness program. BEGINNING GUITAR ADULTS & YOUTH 16+* Have fun while learning how to play acoustic guitar! Gain a solid foundation and the tools to play thousands of songs using traditional and contemporary sources, in folk, bluegrass, country, gospel, blues and rock styles. Learn fundamental chords, progressions, strums and fingerpicking. By the end of this course, you will have the resources to play many songs in different styles. Instructor: Quinn Fitzpatrick has had a successful career for over 15 years both as a professional musician and guitar teacher. He came to Whidbey to focus on composing, recording and promoting his solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar music. ADULTS & YOUTH 16+ Ready to stop strumming and start fingerpicking? This workshop is geared towards folks with some playing experience who want to learn how to play “fingerstyle”. Students should have knowledge of first position chords (C,A,G,E,D,F,Am,Dm,Em) and basic rhythmic strumming. You will learn how to play fingerstyle arrangements of songs in bluegrass, celtic, country, folk, gospel, rock, blues and jazz styles. We’ll start with the basics in arpeggio and Travis picking patterns and move on to basic chord melody. You’ll get tips and techniques for playing bass lines and melodies at the same time. You’ll get easy to understand tablature and notation for all the arrangements. Songs will be derived from both traditional and contemporary sources. Please bring an acoustic guitar. SPORTS FOR DOGS: K-9 NOSEWORK HUMANS AGE 16+; DOGS AGE 4+ MONTHS (OR ALL VACCINATIONS COMPLETED) This fast–growing dog sport teaches you how to encourage and develop your dog’s amazing natural scenting ability by using its desire to hunt and its love of food, toys, and exercise. This exciting detection style activity is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed, or physical ability and handlers of all ages and abilities. Each dog works separately, one at a time, so this is a class for dogs unsuited for a group setting. Classes are offered at all levels, from beginning to advanced dog handler teams.
