We are grateful for each other, the different but complementary ways our students, staff, faculty, board, and supporters create an ecosystem of creativity and commitment. We are grateful to be able to serve so many people, over 200,000 annually, from such varied backgrounds in such varied ways – from the impressive array of classes for all ages to exhibitions and the special events. We are grateful to explore and express through art many of the significant ideas of our time and to discover new perspectives from diverse artists. We are grateful to be financially healthy in an era when it is not the norm, and we are grateful to be successfully inventing a new model institution of higher education, one that serves college students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, as well as the San Antonio community. A student told me recently that she “didn’t know what she would do without Southwest School of Art.” She didn’t have to explain that it was her source of inspiration, solace, social engagement, and enrichment. I feel that way, too. We know, also, that SSA has been and will be a catalyst for neighborhood and economic development. To sum it up, we are grateful for this extraordinary institution and the many ways it is valued – culturally, historically, educationally, socially, economically, architecturally, aesthetically, and spiritually. Moreover, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to lead the team and to extend our gratitude to all of you.

Welcome Aboard!
Southwest School of Art welcomes these new administrators to the SSA community. SCOTT RUBIN | CHIEF OF CAMPUS SAFETY Scott Rubin joins SSA as Chief of Public Safety. Rubin has over 25 years of experience in law enforcement and emergency management leadership. He recently served as the Chief of the City of Fair Oaks Ranch Police Department for 21 years, where he directed a 25-man department. Rubin retired from the U.S Navy Reserve as the Command Master Chief (E-9) for Naval Expeditionary Combat Command, Maritime Expeditionary Security Division 131. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Masters of Public Administration with specialization in Homeland Security/Emergency Management, both from Wayland Baptist University.
MAR-Y-SOL SALINAS | DIRECTOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS Mar-y-Sol Salinas has joined SSA as the new Director of Student Affairs. She has an extensive background in the field of education. Salinas comes to SSA from The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), where since 2012 she served in several capacities, most recently as the Assistant Director for Academic and Career Support Services, providing academic and career advising for all CIA students. She also managed an early alert system, peer tutoring program, disability services, academic support services, externship program, career services, library, and all campus retention initiatives in collaboration with other student affairs departments. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Portland and a Ph.D. in Student, Integral & Transpersonal Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies.
MARTA SOLÍS | ASSISTANT TO THE REGISTRAR Marta Solís has joined SSA as the Assistant to the Registrar. Solís was born and raised in Costa Rica. In addition to her background in Executive Administration and Human Resources, she is a fiber artist who teaches and exhibits her work extensively. Solís has a B.A. in Fine Arts with a minor in Business Administration and Communication from Universidad Veritas - San José, Provincia de San José.
ASHLEY VILLARREAL | MARKETING MANAGER Ashley Villarreal has joined SSA as Marketing Manager. She is a graphic designer, who specializes in marketing and social media. Villarreal served as Marketing Director/Social Media Manager for Urban Bricks and helped develop their brand as they grew from 11 locations to 23 national and international locations; growing their Facebook account by more than 17k followers. She holds a bachelors degree in graphic arts from Anáhuac University, Campus Xalapa.

2019 TASA CONFERENCE SSA hosted the Texas Association of Schools of Art (TASA) conference on Oct 18 & 19. Over 80 art faculty and art students from across Texas converged on the campus for the annual conference. The conference included presentations by SSA faculty members Justin Boyd and Chris Sauter; and studio demonstrations by faculty members Margaret Craig, Jillian Sortore, and Eléonore Lee.
PATRICIA MORALES SELECTED FOR 2019 CLASS OF “CAELI” Director of Young Artist Programs Patricia Morales was selected to the 2019 class of the Community Arts Education Leadership Institute (CAELI). She was one of twenty-six individuals selected for the eight month program, which provided participants the opportunity to hone and advance leadership skills and effectiveness.
SSA INTRODUCES NEW HOMESCHOOL ART EDUCATION PROGRAM In response to a growing need from homeschool practitioners, SSA’s Young Artist Programs has introduced a new program starting this spring for ages 10-15. Students will learn about new materials and processes to enhance what they are making at home. Students must commit to attend 10 of the 12 sessions; and parents are expected to drop-off students and not remain in the classroom. Space is limited. SAN ANTONIO POET LAUREATE VISITS SSA Octavio Quintanilla, 2018-2020 Poet Laureate of San Antonio, visited SSA this fall for a special Artist Talk and reception in conjunction with his exhibition FRONTEXTOS, on display at SSA through December 29 in the Urschel Gallery. Quintanilla’s FRONTEXTO project, (the term frontexto is a blend of frontera and texto, border/text) began on New Year’s Day of 2018 as a challenge to write a poem each day in Spanish and post it on social media. Quintanilla’s daily practice quickly began to incorporate drawing and became an exploration into the relationships of text and image.
INTRODUCING THE NEW ARTIST IN RESIDENCE This fall SSA welcomed a new Artist in Residence, Alejandra Salinas. Salinas is a metalsmith and emerging curator, born in the United States and raised in Mexico. Standing between two cultures, she combines her personal history with a contemporary perspective, translating her experiences into metal objects and jewelry. Her work explores boundaries, both physical and conceptual, as she attempts to materialize a sense of resilience and hope.

GLITTER ON THE HIGHWAY Students in SSA’s BFA degree program were featured in a pop-up show, titled Glitter on the Highway, at #134 Blue Star in October. The show included work by Abby Billingsley, Rachael Oelsen, Gabrielle Peralta, Mason Rhodes, and Natasha Shirley.
A group of SSA’s college students, led by faculty member Eléonore Lee, participated in the 2019 San Anto Zine Fest (SAZF) held at the San Antonio Public Library - Central this fall. The SAZF is a market for independent publishers showcase their zines. Zine, short for magazine, is material of various shapes and sizes, printed by individuals or collectives. SSA on the Move • Faculty member Léo Lee was featured in a group exhibition, Truth is a Contested Concept, at the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago from November 1 -23, 2019. • Several metals students and instructors including Jillian Sortore, Sarah T. Roberts, our current resident, Alejandra Salinas and past residents, Dongyi Wu and Laura Wood participated in an exhibition at Equinox Gallery in conjunction with the Dia De Los Muertos event at La Villita in November. • Alumna Lata Gedala ’19 presented her exhibition, Cross-Sections, at DAMAS gallery and studio on November 1, 2019. • President Paula Owen moderated a panel discussion on October 14, 2019 at Texas State Galleries prior to the opening of Every Ware, an exhibition curated by Michel Conroy and Jennifer Ling Datchuk. • Faculty member Casey Galloway and several of our community students were featured in the Annual Juried Fiber Artists of San Antonio exhibition, Threads of Magic, from October 11 through November 15, 2019 at the University of the Incarnate Word, Kelso Art Center. Galloway won 2nd place in the annual Fiber Artists of San Antonio’s member show. • Faculty member Sarah T. Roberts gave a lecture at the Texas Metals Symposium at Texas Tech University on October 12. • Academic Director Justin Boyd, in partnership with the San Antonio River Foundation, curated The Picnic Under the Petals Performance Series in October at Confluence Park. As part of the series, he presented his work, Confluence, on October 10, 2019. • Faculty member Margaret Craig's exhibition, Sea Islands, opened at Blue Star 4
Contemporary on October 4, 2019 and will remain on display through January 5. • Faculty members Sarah T. Roberts and Jillian Sortore were part of a traveling exhibition, Not-So-Lone-Star Studios: A Gathering of Texas Makers, which showed at the Texas Metals Symposium in October. • Faculty member Margaret Craig’s installation, Oceanic Evolutions, was included as part of Sculpture Month Houston at the SITE Gallery Houston in October. • San Antonio Museum of Art hosted a Contemporary Art Conversation with Daniel Rios Rodriguez on October 1, 2019. Established in 2010, the Debbie McMaho Fiber Symposium features noted fiber artists exemplary in their field in lectures, exhibitions or workshops. Named in honor of Debbie McMahon who was an accomplished and devoted fiber artist, McMahon was also a student and Trustee at Southwest School of Art. Her husband created an endowment in McMahon’s memory to facilitate this annual conversation on contemporary fiber arts.

The exhibition, which presents a collection of works made across disciplines, represents not only the completion of a major educational accomplishment but also the beginning of the students’ independent creative practices moving their work from the familiarity of the classroom to the visibility of the public sphere.

Anti-exhibition is an exhibition that captures attempts to reject and modify what is typically understood to be an exhibition of visual art. They say you can’t go home again, but that couldn’t be further from the truth for alumna Lauri Garcia Jones ’18. This fall she has come home to Southwest School of Art as the new Recruitment and Admissions Officer for SSA’s college program. “I am very excited to be back at SSA. I like seeing the transition in the relationships I’ve built with faculty and staff. It makes me happy to know that graduating doesn’t always mean moving away from where you created your foundation, but that there’s always the option to build upon what you already started,” said Garcia Jones. Garcia Jones is a graduate of the Legacy Class, the first to complete the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program that began at SSA in 2014, but her path to graduation was not a direct one. After several years working in the legal and medical fields, she made the decision at the age of 32 to pursue an education in art by enrolling in a local community college. “Throughout my life, I had been making art, but without an awareness that there were actual career opportunities available,” said Garcia Jones. “When I heard that SSA was starting a BFA program, I decided to take things a step further and applied.” Four years later, the mother of three donned her cap and gown to accept her degree from President Paula Owen.
“As a member of the first cohort at SSA, Lauri was an outstanding student and artist, in part because she worked hard for it. We are gratified to know that a young woman of her caliber and commitment will be out there representing SSA among prospective students,” said Paula Owen, SSA President. In her new role as Recruitment and Admissions Officer, Garcia Jones has a very important job, spreading the word about SSA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program and guiding prospective students through the application process to enrollment. “What appeals most to me about being the Recruitment and Admissions Officer at SSA is being able to act as a bridge for artists to get to a place where they will grow with the support and mentorship of our faculty. Being a former student, I’m also very excited to share my own experiences about the program and the environment that encompasses the school,” said Garcia Jones. She has been busy in her first weeks back at SSA visiting high schools, attending college fairs, conducting tours and connecting with educators, parents, prospective students. “What I hope to communicate to prospective students is the significance of what SSA has to offer. Students at SSA have the opportunity to work alongside many different artists who are highly-trained and well-established.”

To Southwest School of Art benefactors Julius and Kathleen “Kathy” Gribou, education is a passion. Recently they designated a bequest to support scholarships for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program at Southwest School of Art. “It’s a critical element necessary to advance the state of the current knowledge and hopefully improve global conditions,” said Julius Gribou, whose many professional achievements include a prolific career in architecture and serving as the founding dean of the University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Architecture. Kathy, an accomplished professional in hospitality management, most recently served as national sales manager for San Antonio’s Hotel Contessa. The couple first became involved with Southwest School of Art when Julius joined the Board of Trustees in 2006. He went on to serve two-terms on the governing board from 2006-2007 and again from 2013 - 2014. Over the years, they have continued to give their time, talent and treasure to support many of SSA’s programs and events.

“We value the role that the Southwest School of Art plays in the community and the new degree program and its students need support,” said Julius. “San Antonio has an amazing amount of art talent and Southwest School of Art can provide an opportunity for this talent to be nurtured.” Though now retired, the couple isn’t slowing down. Splitting their time between residences in San Antonio and Italy, they remain committed to their passion for arts, architecture, education and providing students in all disciplines with an opportunity to study abroad.

Sol Macias
Senior Marisol “Sol” Macias sees the world through her own lens, connecting people and giving them a voice. A lifetime interest in community service, inspired by her service-minded father, led her down an unintended path to SSA.
to change directions. Since then she has found new ways to combine her love for serving the community and her creative interests. Macias found inspiration at SSA in Professor Ryan Takaba’s Community Project class.
“I started off (studying) as an interpreter for American Sign Language (ASL) at San Antonio College. I was going for trilingual interpretation; working with English, Spanish, and ASL all at the same time. I loved it, but it was highly stressful, so I started taking art classes as a stress reliever,” said Macias.
“He opened the doors to me being able to use community organization as a medium for my art,” said Macias. “I collected stories and created the Truth Exchange, which is me asking San Antonio, one by one, who are you? I take that ‘raw material’ and process them through my father’s typewriter so it turns from an individual voice into a collective voice,”.
A photography professor at San Antonio College opened the eyes of the Eagle Pass, TX native who had never considered a career in the arts. The professor steered her towards Southwest School of Art. Macias spent a year working on her portfolio to apply and getting her head around the decision she was making

nas con Camaras, stems from a fascination with street photography, which motivated her to contact a female photographer whose work she was following. The two began communicating on Instagram and each brought another female photographer to the group. They organized a walk on July 3, 2019 that attracted 24 women with a variety of photography experience. “The energy that we felt as women gathering together, and just helping each other out… it was amazing for me to see that there was no ego, no competition, no fear. It was just us creating in that moment,” said Macias.
Chingonas, Mexican slang for strong-willed, uncompromising women, embraces the energy of the group. “We have almost no resources except for our own will and we are making things happen,” said Macias. Now the group has over 700 followers, events once a month, daily interactions on Instagram, and monthly podcasts. With followers from as far away as Japan, Macias has dreams of the movement growing into a global community. “I think that would be amazing,” said Macias “Texas women photographers taking over the world.”

We recently took a moment to chat with Heather Hamilton a student in SSA’s community program since 2010. Here’s what she had to say. What skills are you most proud of mastering through your classes at SSA?
One of my first classes at Southwest School of Art was with Dennis Smith. He picked up one on my pots, turned it over, examined the foot I trimmed, and asked me “do you really think this foot goes with this pot?” It may have been a little blunt but it led me on a path of aesthetically pleasing work, not merely functional. Every part of the piece is important to the overall piece, including the foot. Now every time I trim a piece I can hear Dennis in my head asking if the foot goes with the pot. Also, about a year ago, I wanted to see if I could throw an entire bag of clay at once. I attempted it and was successful at throwing 25 pounds of clay and made a large bowl. I’ve tried one each term and have progressively made larger bowls. Have you ever taken classes in other mediums at SSA?
Yes, I have attended metalsmithing classes and have enjoyed the opportunity to mix my ceramic and metal work.
How do you benefit from taking classes at SSA? The biggest benefit would be the community of individuals that I attend classes with. Why do you continue to take classes at SSA?
There are many reasons I continue to take classes at SSA. The facilities are great, there are a variety of classes (and instructors) that allow one to learn and grow within a discipline, the price is right, and the people are wonderful. Would you recommend SSA’s community classes to your friends?
Yes, of course and I have. Even to those that may not consider themselves creative. The classes are a wonderful outlet from the everyday hustle and you never know what hidden talent is waiting to be revealed.

CHRIS SAUTER
Beyond the Classroom Director of Foundations and Special Courses and Interim Department Chair of Painting Chris Sauter pushes his students beyond their comfort zones. “Chris questions every choice made going into a piece and does this to push us students to create meaningful work that is show ready," said Mason Rhodes, a second-year BFA degree program student. "Chris sees failure as a learning experience, and is the first person to offer advice and critique to benefit future projects. Through his instruction I have personally began to develop an entirely new perspective on not only the work I create, but all of the art that I encounter on a daily basis.” By working with students in their early foun dation courses and also with their Senior Thesis projects, Sauter has the opportunity to see the growth of students as they develop through the program. “It is a huge difference. By the time they are seniors, they have more of a work ethic and they think about the work that they make as their work and not as assignments or some thing they have to do begrudgingly,” said Sauter. He has twice been voted Outstanding Faculty of the Year by the students in SSA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree program; in 2017 and 2019. On the subject of his awards, he is humble. “It means a lot. It means, at least I hope it means, that what you are doing is making some sort of impact,” said Sauter. Sauter who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Incarnate Word and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio began his
