Beginning/Intermediate

1001 | Introduction to Throwing John Nelson & Ryan Takaba

This class will focus on the basic skills of wheel throwing — centering, opening and pulling vessels — followed by learning to form cylinders, bowls and cups. Students will also learn to evaluate form and how form serves a vessel’s function. Students will learn about clay properties while working in stoneware clay and hightemperature glazes. 1001a: Nelson | Wed, Sept 25 – Dec 11 | 9:30am – 12:30pm 1001b: Takaba | Wed, Sept 25 – Dec 11 | 6:30 – 9:30pm McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $325 (Members: $310) | 12 sessions Beginning/Intermediate

SUPPLIES NOTE: Tuition for all ceramic courses covers glaze materials and kiln firing; however, students should anticipate additional fees for clay and some tools unless otherwise noted.

Handbuilding is the fundamental construction method for creating sculptural and functional ceramic forms. Students will undertake a variety of projects including slab construction, round and flat coil construction, pinch-forming methods, surface texturing and carving. Students will work in high-temperature stoneware clay and will be introduced to glazing techniques. 1002a: Smith | Mon, Sept 23 – Dec 9 | 9:30am – 12:30pm 1002b: Rumfelt | Tues, Sept 24 – Dec 10 | 6:30 – 9:30pm McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $325 (Members: $310) | 12 sessions

Ray Morales & Dennis W. Smith This class will concentrate on expanding and refining throwing skills through the forming of bowls, mugs, lids, pitchers and the assemblage of two-part forms. Presentations and discussion will help students understand how to integrate form with function. Students will also be introduced to an array of surface decoration techniques and how to load and fire downdraft gas kilns. Prerequisites: Basic Skills: Introduction to Throwing and Basic Skills: Introduction to Handbuilding.

‘‘This ceramics class gave me a great structure and the incentive to push myself.”

1030a: Morales | Thurs, Sept 19 – Dec 12 | 9:30am – 12:30pm (No class Nov 28) 1030b: Smith | Thurs, Sept 19 – Dec 12 | 6:30 – 9:30pm (No class Oct 3 & Nov 28) McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline 1030a: Tuition: $335 (Members: $320) | 12 sessions 1030b: Tuition: $325 (Members: $310) | 11 sessions All Levels

1033 | Polymer Clay for Personal Ornamentation Carol Dotin Explore the colorful, vibrant, magical world of polymer clay, starting with the most basic skills and progressing quickly to more advanced ones. The emphasis will be on learning numerous techniques—making canes, photocopy image transfer, working with an extruder, faux metal surface applications along with the use of stamps, gold leaf, mica powder, and alcohol inks that can be used in the creation of beads and small flat panels that can be made into jewelry (pins, pendants, bracelets, and earrings). Please see SSA website for a list of supplies. Tues, Sept 24 – Dec 10 | 9:30am – 12:30pm | McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $315 (Members: $300) | 12 sessions Intermediate

1034 | Naked Raku Lyn Woods Naked raku is a low-temperature, fast firing process that produces an exciting and visually stunning black and white finish. Woods will cover the firing process, as well as provide demonstrations in thrown vessel forming. Vessels are burnished by smoothing and compressing the clay creating a lustrous surface once bisque fired. Pieces are then covered with a thick slip, which cracks, and when fired and smoked thru the traditional raku process, can produce an enticing soft-crackle surface effect. Prerequisites: Basic Skills: Introduction to Throwing and Basic Skills: Introduction to Handbuilding. Mon, Sept 23 – Dec 9 | 6:30 – 9:30pm | McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $335 (Members: $320) | 12 sessions NEW | Intermediate/Advanced

1046 | Low-Temperature: Drawing on Clay Jennifer Datchuk This class will utilize the techniques of sgraffito, slip inlay and carving to draw personal imagery and decoration onto a clay surface. Sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare and translates to “to scratch”. Contrasting colored slips are layered on top of leather hard pieces and carved through to reveal the clay color below. This technique allows for high contrast imagery and can be combined with slip inlay. See *ceramic Note. Prerequisites: Basic Skills: Introduction to Throwing and Basic Skills: Introduction to Handbuilding. Mon, Sept 23 – Dec 9 | 6:30 – 9:30pm | McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $335 (Members: $320) | 12 sessions

Class sizes are limited. To ensure enrollment, please register early.

06 Intermediate/Advanced

1048 | The Glazed Surface Ryan Takaba Glazing should take more time than many students think! Focus on the vessel’s glazed surface and the many application techniques that may be applied. Experimentation and persistence in firing will be the goal allowing students the chance to learn and fire the gas kiln. The potter’s wheel will be used to create a series of small forms while experimenting with cone 10 glazes. See *ceramic Note. Prerequisite: At least three intermediate-level classes. Tues, Sept 24 – Dec 10 | 9:30am – 12:30pm | McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $345 (Members: $330) | 12 sessions Advanced

ALSO SEE: 9509 | Mixed Media Sculpture: Mystery Boxes listed under Other Media. OTHER TOPICS on Page 26.

1059 | Low-Temperature: Handbuilt Sculpture Dennis W. Smith This class is designed to stimulate the creative thought process through assigned projects and themes working with commercially produced underglaze, glaze and slips in the low-temperature firing range. Projects will be built around three construction techniqiues; press mold, flat coil and thick slab. There will be demonstrations in the making of simple plaster press molds and the making of textured tile for the testing of oxide washes and underglaze as a treatment for sculptural surfaces as well. Prerequisite: Students should have a strong foundation in handbuilding techniques, and must have taken a minimum of two intermediate-level classes. See *ceramic Note. Wed, Sept 25 – Dec 11 | 9:30am – 12:30pm | McAllister Ceramics Studio | Ursuline Tuition: $345 (Members: $330) | 12 sessions
