Huangpu is located in central of Shanghai which is a fast growing and developing city. Hence, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world with an air pollution hit a record high. As the pollution and car problem in China increases rapidly by the year, the two major problems in this over densely populated area is the narrow sidewalks which force people to walk on the street and the fact that in some parts bicycle traffic is forbidden in favour of cars. Although the site is so densely populated, it gives me opportunity to investigate and find solution on how to achieve this issue by implementing the environmental qualities on the chosen area of Huangpu Riverfront as my 800m2 test site. The main feature of the Huangpu site is its waterfront area and the green network along the riverfront of Huangpu.
Site Information Area: 241 hectareS Population: 66, 285 Density: 275 PPHa
Buildings The building type in Huangpu is mostly highrise buildings with an average height of 13 storeys high. Buildings alongside the Huangpu River get progressively taller as they move father from the river. Land Use Huangpu District was largely located in the former Shanghai International Settlement and is the commercial centre of Shanghai. The area consist a lot of Mixed-use tower buildings and acts as a major financial and business districts in Shanghai. Transportation Shanghai is one of China’s major transport centres. The central city is both a seaport and a river port, with the Huangpu River serving as an excellent harbour; at high tide, oceangoing vessels can sail up the river to the city. Shanghai’s road network was improved and expanded considerably beginning in the late 20th century, notably with the construction of a network of express highways in and around the city. However, automobile use in particular rose dramatically, especially after 2000, resulting in frequent traffic jams and delays.
developing abstract model When studying Huangpu, the I felt that Hugh Barton’s concepts of graded density and his neighborhood model would best suit the site. Ultimately, Barton’s model combines mixed land uses with density to create a place where use intensity varies according to its accessibility and closeness to items such as high streets and transportation stops (Barton, 2002, p.201) Barton (2002) also provides us with a framework for how use intensities may be distributed throughout his model. Although this model is produced for a population density of around 50pph, its principles can still be applied to a larger scheme, in this case 800pph. His framework is categorised into five areas of the model, which gives allocations of where particular uses may be found. These concepts have been represented within the conceptual model and final masterplan:

Flats, local shops, small offices, pubs, cafes and community facilities.
Inner Accessible Zone
Flats, schools and small pocket parks.

Parkland, playing fields, blue networks/ features,neighborhood farms and woodland.
Interestandrichness What? To stimulate visitors’ senses through playful interventions, including tactile materials, sound amplifiers, heavily scented plants and flowers and trees bearing sweet fruits.

How? Meandering paths of differing widths offer a choice of routes through the undulating topography, further enhancing the contrast between seclusion and public interaction.

How? To promote diversity and choice through a mix of compatible developments and uses that work together to create viable places that respond to local needs and creating a mix of uses to provide opportunity for social interactions. Urban vitality and street life.
Providing a range of development types that allow for a mix of day and night time activities supported by dense residential activity that aids with natural surveillance and provides a ‘base load’ of activity. Providing high amenity open space and recreation areas especially for children.

quality of public realm What? To create a sense of wellbeing and amenity. How? Provide well-designed lighting and street furniture and provided attractive & robust planting on the streets. Making separate footpaths or cycle tracks as direct as possible, and well overlooked. Provide a place with public spaces and routes that is lively and pleasant to use.
energy efficiency What? Optimizing solar potential for good aspect. How? The best optimum use of solar access is by consider the building footprint that maximizes south and north exposures, and minimizes east and west exposures.
connectivity and permeability What? To promote accessibility and local permeability by making places that connect with each other and are easy to move through and putting people before traffic.
How? Roads, footpaths and public spaces connected into wellused routes including well-paced crossings on major roads. Accomodating all users in the realm of the street treating the street as positive place.

active frontage What? To activate street frontages where there is an active visual engagement between those in the street and those on the ground floors of buildings. How? Mixed-use buildings, with retail at grade and residential and office above, will allow residents to live, work and recreate within the Urban Growth Centre, creating “eyes on the street,” and enhancing safety and activity at all hours.
To promote the continuity of street frontages and the enclosure of space by development which clearly defines private and public areas.
Maximising windows and doors to encourages active frontage with balconies can further enliven the frontage and views put ‘eyes on streets’, that can contribute to safety
Transparent windows enable communication between inside and outside.
ReinventinG high speed - rail anaklia, georgia Design Studio 3 Year 2, 2018 Location : Anaklia, Georgia Supervised : Charlotte Grace Maria Alexandrescu Ds3.osa.digital/
site context The proposed site is situated in Anaklia, tangent to the middle of east and west situation between Poti and Abhkazia and in the corner of north and south situation of China Europe. The area is an described as scaled leftover traffic island, an urban – non place – sense. It is characteristed by transit of vehicles and security distance. Anaklia is viable to be as partT of a new line linking Georgia to neighbouring countries and Abkhazia. By proposing a new railway line into anaklia could potentially overcome the disconnection and the breaking down the barriers of the site’s isolation. Although anaklia is lacking adequate infrastructure, where the land uses are mostly dominated by commercial and residential uses that are not well integrated with the surrounding area (both functionally and physically) The site can be seen as potential transit hub where it sits strategically on the middle of east and west situation between Poti and Abhkazia and in the corner of north and south situation of China Europe. In being so, the idea of proposing a new rail line into anaklia could feed to the integrated logistic services and From a corridor perspective, railways also represent a viable choice for access to and from Black Sea ports, connecting Georgian maritime gateways with neighboring countries and Central Asia.

architecture gesture The purpose of the train station is that it act as dominant in urban space where it function as producing a node of interchange and junction between existing neighbourhoods where it could also feeds to the prososed logistic park by one of the ds3 member, Nur’s prosposed design where the railway could integrate to her logistic services. The intinial idea of designing this terminal is by understanding how the site works and how to integrate the design outcotmes.

design strategy
The key points to consider in the beginning of the design process were by looking back at Semester 1 works, where I took the theme of modularity in understanding the properties of Axis and Linearity and bring it forward into designing a successful transit hub.
I use axis to describe how the principle applies to the space organisation of the transit hub where I link back to the First term of understanding Modularity of designing a successful layout.
The Train station will be a bridge linking Nur’s logistic warehouses, where the building rest on top of the warehouse to enable maximum view towards the black sea and its linear relationship to the site context.

The initial idea is to elevate the programmes from the ground level to the top, to have a sequences of activity going on through different levels. These activity are laocated on the rooftop level as to activate the linear park above.
The building is Tilted to get maximum views of the surrounding and the form of the building is driven by the environmental strategy that is by tilting the building sideways from Nur’s tower to get maximum visual richness from both facing exteriors and maximise solar gains for winter. + Edge of the city

The proposed site is placed at the edge where it can create a competitive pull and give to the civic center as it creates a new vibrant area within close proxoimity.
linearity
+ Seaport Seaport Condition is a valued destination in terms of view but also can act as an economic driver through ocean harvest. Thus, the station could enhance economic profit ability in Anaklia.
The proposition of the train station layout is to further enrich the vertical laneway towards the warehouse and more fluidy to the spatial circulation in conjuction to the site context.
ground floor spatial layout The building has total of 1 levels above ground, where all the visitors and commuters enter the building from the ground level. The ground level contains transit bus hub, commercial, public and admistarative activities for the crew. When arriving at the station, the commuters can easily orient themselves along the underpass which exits through the transit bus hub and locate themselves for other transportation modes. The east amphitheatre like staircase that is overlooking to the plaza could lead up to the level 1 (train terminal) and connects to Nur worker’s rest stop tower. The west large external stairs entrance which leads to the Terminal concourse.

first floor spatial layout The 1st Floor plan was designed to host the main activities of the station. This is considered to be the main floor which includes amenities to increase the satisfaction experience of the user. The facilities contain all service spaces for the station to be functional and to serve the people in the platforms. The programs include retail, food hall at the far end that is overlooking a view to the black sea, terraced waiting lounge, ticket hall and Paid passenger lounge. The intention of having the spatial layout compressed in the middle is to further enrich a vertical laneway that directs the passenger to the far end of the terminal. Large staircase is placed at rear and front from the entrance of the terminal which could lead the passenger to the upper roof top. The spatial allocation of corridor zone with double façade retail is to increase spatial qualities and smooth transparency of the terminal.

roof floor spatial layout The public space that is on the rooftop can be access from the first floor where the passenger can have a visual enjoyment overlooking the port and the town. The noise restriction is a major concern for train station. Therefore, a landscape strategy is introduced to help entrap and absorb sound vibrations where having a green roof could help deflect the noise. The roof shared space can have a visual interior view from the skylight above the concourse which could transmits natural daylight into the building. The playfulness of the different levels is to further enrich visual enjoyment to the visitors and can act as look out point/view towards the black sea. Programme Legends: 1. Roof Top North Lobby 2. section a - a 1 The section is cut in the middle part of the terminal to show how the train is elevated above the street level and railtracks. My structure approach is to have a bridge-like building that overhangs from the warehouse with the support of Vierendeel truss system. The section also indicates the flow of how the passenger could circulate through the terminal from the ground level towards the roof top.
