Taking your floors to the next level Polished concrete is currently a hot trend in architecture and home design. While it once was standard practice to cover the oor of one's home with tiles, carpets, vinyl or other material, you now also have the option to rather showcase the bare concrete. Polished concrete surfaces are chic, sophisticated and green and should be considered as ooring, or even kitchen and bathroom tops, in any modern design home. The process Polishing concrete is similar to sanding wood. Heavy-duty grinding and polishing machines equipped with progressively ner grits of diamonds are used to gradually polish the existing concrete surfaces to the desired degree of gloss and smoothness. The surface paste is removed and the stronger concrete and stones beneath are exposed. The transformation of your concrete from a dull grey surface to a shiny aesthetically pleasing oor nish is accomplished by mechanically rening the concrete. The rst step is to use a coarse diamond to level the oor and remove anything that's been on top of the concrete. This
will be followed with several steps of smaller and smaller diamonds to get the desired result. The benets Polished concrete is very versatile, and is customizable thanks to the option to use a variety of nishes, and different aggregates and cement colours in the concrete itself. One can also use different exposure levels —that is, the amount of the original surface which is ground away and thus how much of the aggregate material is exposed. Polished concrete can be seen as a green ooring option as it utilizes the existing oor slab without the use of any extra material, and it is very easy and cost effective to maintain. Its smooth, hard surface makes it durable, hard to damage and easy to clean. No chemicals, waxes or oor cleaning products are needed, just a bit of water. The high light reectivity of polished concrete is another important benet, especially for automobile dealerships, ofce buildings, hotels, restaurants, and other public facilities that want to project a bright, clean, professional image.

Warm up your swimmingpool This month's topic has been discussed before, yet, from calls we receive, to actual site visit's, it is clear, that we, humans, easily misunderstand the warming of swimming pool water. Most pools in Namibia uses solar panels on the roof: These black sheets are filled with small little pipes, through which the pool pump circulates the swimming pool's, water. The working of these solid sheets, were carefully calculated by the clever folks at the factory, as not to slow the flow of water down so much, that the pool cleaner stops working. To ensuring the maximum heat gets transferred into the pool, the following points needs to be addressed. -Your maintenance team needs to install the correct amount of solar panels, on a North facing roof of your house. à Make sure the swimming pool's timer is working: Set the timer to allow the pool pump to run over the warmer part of the day: for ex. 09h00 – 16h00. à This enables us to get the most heat from the sun, into the swimming pool. à Make sure the solar panels were installed on an area not getting any shade from trees. à Switch free falling water devices “Off”. The flow of air over water is very efficient to cool water down, (such as happening when water is free falling) making all the “warming up” efforts form the solar panels = ZERO effect on heat. à Make sure your swimming pool is properly covered. A wooden sliding deck floating above the pool will do little, to keep the heat in. This is mainly because air gets in below the deck and thus, air flowing over water = higher evaporation and a colder pool. à Lastly, make sure your pool does not leak. If you need to top up your pool every second day or so, chances are there is a leak. Adding cold tap water to your pool on a regular basis is also playing a big role in cooling the pool down. à Invest in a proper thermometer: It is not advisable to heat the water inside fibreglass pools to more than 30 degrees. AN UNWELCOME BOARDER Bed bugs – Cimex lectularius! Once thought swept under the rug, bedbugs make regular headlines as they infest homes, hotels and dormitories worldwide. How do they spread and what causes a bedbug infestation? What do they look like? Bedbugs are small, flat wingless insects that are reddish-brown in colour and approximately ½ cm long – about the size and shape of a small apple seed. They feed on blood (Frankenstein of the insect world?) and actually don't bite, but suck by using two little tubes for their feeding. The good news is that bed bug bites don't transmit disease, unlike mosquito, flea or tick bites. However, bites itch and one should avoid scratching which will cause more swelling, bleeding as well as result in secondary infections. Keep the existing bites clean and disinfected. Rather use a soothing gel, like Aloe Vera to ease the itching. Some people might have an reaction to bed bug bites which can worsen and become more intense the more times they get bitten. During the day they hide on beds (mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, head boards)and in cracks and crevices of walls, floors and furniture. They come out at night during the peaceful hours of slumber! Unlike fleas, they do not fly, but crawl rapidly. Myth: Being poor doesn't put you at greater risk for bedbugs just as wealth won't immunize you against infestation. Bedbugs don't care if your dwelling is as neat as a pin or as filthy as a pigsty and will settle down anywhere, as long as there is a warm blooded food source. Well, how on earth do they enter suitable environments? First and foremost, they are excellent hitchhikers. To enter your home they have to hitch a ride on someone or something. Usually they don't stay on hosts after feeding, but might hide in clothing for a free trip to a new location. Perhaps you stayed in an infested hotel and bedbugs travelled along in your luggage. Theatres and other public spaces could be infested and these critters will easily crawl into purses, backpacks, coats or hats.
Preventative steps:

bag on a suitcase stand rather than on the bed or floor. Keep the rack away from walls and furniture. When back home, wash the clothes from your trip and put them in a hot dryer. Inspect new and used furniture before bringing it inside. Look in seams tufts and under cushions. Get rid of clutter, especially in your bedroom. Vacuum sides and seams of mattresses on a regular basis. Empty or discard the vacuum bag in a sealed container. Bed linen and blankets should best be dried in the sun or a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes. Wooden dog kennels and cat houses should be inspected from time to time as well, put their bedding out in the sun. The heat drives out the bedbugs and the sun kills them.
How would you know that you were “donating” blood during the night? If you wake up with bites (welts, sometimes with a tiny blister on top) that you did not have the night before, that is more probably than not, a sign of bed bugs. Sheets could have reddish or rusty-coloured stains or smears when you unwittingly squashed a recently fed bed bug when moving in your sleep. Dark or black stains on sheets are digested blood, bedbug feces and will smear if you wipe it with a wet rag. Efekto's Fendona – Follow the instructions on the inserted pamphlet and spray mattresses, couches, wooden skirtings, etc. when there is an infestation. Repeat after a week if necessary. Efeko Fendona has no odour and leaves no stains. Also effective against the control of mosquitos, flies and cockroaches, fleas and fishmoths.
TIP: Rain is soon on its way – make sure all gutters are debris free to prevent weeds from taking over.

Brazilian Cheese Bread
I discovered this recipe when we were doing a Brazilian cooking workshop. It is a lovely bread recipe that can be enjoyed by those with a wheat intolerance!!
Ingredients:

Boil the water, the milk and the oil with salt

Add the tapioca flour and mix it well (use a Kenwood if necessary)
