History repeating itself Arthur and Frieda Kornblum departed from Hamburg via Amsterdam to Africa with a German steam ship. the Admiral, of the German East –Africa Line. His occupation was: Decorator. They arrived in May 1906 in Swakopmund and moved into a little corrugated house on old “Troostschen Grundstuck and BruckenStrasse”, where he started his business as upholsterer and saddle maker. In 1909 the first furniture that was finished in its entirety in GSWA was a couch and two easy chairs. The furniture was made by carpenter Kirst out of oak and Arthur Kornblum upholstered it in red leather. It was sold to Mr. Schulz in Luderitz. In 1911 Woermann and Brock built a house with a shop for A. Kornblum to sell furniture, curtain material and oriental carpets. In the 1914, when war broke out, the family lost everything they had built up., but after a year he started

to make much needed mattresses from bales of coir. After the Second World War his Grand Son Herbert Simonson took over the management of the Swakopmund business. A Kornblum & Co was taken over by Jean Theron in the 19…… They stock a large selection of quality furniture, from elegant décor items to bed units and dining room tables, cupboards and coffee tables with a variety of finishes such as natural wood, hand-painted, lacquered, carved from wood and stone, or leather bound. Mediation - a few questions answered

Part 1

Is a mediator a marriage counselor or therapist? A mediator does not fulfill the role of either a marriage counselor or therapist. Mediators neither encourage divorce nor encourage people to continue their relationship. The primary purpose of mediation is to encourage couples to reach mutually acceptable decisions. This in itself can have therapeutic benefit for the mediating parties. Mediators may refer couples or their children for therapy and counseling. How does divorce and family mediation work? Divorce, child custody and other family law matters involve some of the most complex and personal situations any person can encounter in a lifetime. You will have concerns ranging from dividing property and debt to custody and maintenance obligations. Mediation is a voluntary, confidential and practical way to resolve these problems with the assistance of an independent third party. In divorce litigation both parties are laden with additional financial burdens and children can become the innocent victims of their parent's hostility which can seriously deplete or wipe out a couple's savings which can be much better utilized for their children's or their own costs. Through divorce mediation you will experience a safe environment to create an agreement package where you are assisted by an independent mediator to

make the vital decisions required offering several alternatives to consider. What are the benefits? 1. Mediation takes less time so you can move on with your life; 2. It is less expensive and leads to more acceptable results than court rulings; 3. Better results as you remain in control of the decisions that affect your life; 4. It is less emotionally stressful than going to court 5. It benefits your children and other people involved in that it reduces conflict; 6. It reduces public disclosure of financial and personal matters. What can be addressed and decided? 1. Equitable distribution of marital property; 2. Custody and parenting arrangements; 3. Spousal maintenance; 4. Child maintenance 5. Ways to avoid future conflict; 6. Financial planning When is the best time to start mediation? The sooner the better in an unresolved conflict situation, communication often break down, tempers flare up and there are a lot of misunderstandings that complicate the situation even more. When people stop talking to each other they rely on their legal practitioners, family or friends to rely messages. Anyone who has played the â&#x20AC;&#x153;telephoneâ&#x20AC;? game as a child knows that inevitable the last person

in the row does not really know what the first person said when the message is passed on by people in the middle. In mediation you can start talking about what needs to be decided or what you may think you can talk about. You might be surprised about you ARE able to do. If you can make decisions together in mediation you control what happen to you in the situation. Must we both agree to mediation? Yes. Mediation can only work when both parties agree to participate. Never believe that the other party will not be amenable to mediation. Many an opportunity is lost because a person thinks the other party will not mediate. The mediator can also meet with each party individually, if the parties agree to mediation. The mediator however at all times remains neutral. As mediation is completely voluntary any party can withdraw from mediation at any time and for any reason. What is the duration of mediation and the costs involved? The duration will be determined by the issues and the parties generally 3 to 6 sessions are necessary. Each session usually lasts approximately two hours. As the parties stay in full control of the process this substantially reduces the time spent in litigation. Responsibility for payment of fees may be shared by the parties in any way they deem appropriate and is payable before each session.

Buzz Off! It’s the time of year when we enjoy being outdoors during balmy evenings, spreading a blanket on the lawn or bring and braai with friends. Nothing can disturb an enjoyable moment more than the buzzing sound of a mosquito! Trying to fall asleep after a hard day’s work or a night on the town? Forget it when you ear picks up the introduction of Mr Mozzie’s not too soothing lullaby! Numerous repelling pesticides are available commercially, but needless to say, these are not always safe or environmentally friendly and some people even develop allergies when opting for this solution. THE GARDEN ROUTE – the famous and not so well-known Aloysia triphylla – Lemon Verbena. This humble, grateful shrub is by far the most well-known for its mosquito repellant qualities. They require no pampering other than compost rich soil and enjoy full sun to semi-shade. Plant in the vicinity of bedrooms, braai facilities or any other entertainment areas. Enclose our hands around branches with leafs to release the volatile oil and simply rub on arms and forehead before retiring for the night. Excellent in potpourri bags to hang in wardrobes and between linen and towels. Makes a lovely tea – hot or cold – alone or combined with other herbs of your choice – apart from being calming, also assists digestion. The small white flowers attract bees,

helpful if you need plants like fruit trees to be pollinated. Cut back at least two thirds round about end of July to stimulate vigorous new summer growth. The strong citrus smell will drive spiders away as well. Pelargonium citrosum – “Mozzie Buster”. Bushy variety of scented Geranium, good for repelling mosquitos in confined areas. Excellent patio plant (should receive at least 2 hours of sun in this position) or in the garden as an attractive border. Not usually thought of as mosquito repellant plants are the following, all of them waterwise, a bonus in our country where water should not be wasted: Plant with compost and bone meal in a sunny position and feed once monthly with Efekto’s Seagro or Nitrosol. Rosemary – attractive dark green spiky foliage with beautiful blue flowers and from a culinary viewpoint, an absolute must in every garden. Marigolds – “surely not!” you might be inclined to say, maar nouja, Afrikaners is mos plesierig! Then too, their roots release a substance that naturally destroy nematode parasites in the soil. Lemon Grass – the citronella oil in this plant also repels mosquitos although it does not release with body heat as in the case of Lemon Verbena. A beautiful focus plant in the garden and when cut back regularly at the

end of winter, it becomes bushier every year. Can you imagine Thai cooking without Lemon Grass? Lavender – love it! Well, mosquitos don’t. Many varieties available, so easy to care for. If, due to circumstances, you cannot maintain too much of a garden, what then? Use Efekto’s Fendona. Spray directly onto surfaces where required, odorless and no discolouring of paint or other coatings. Has a prolonged effective period, especially indoors. When insects like mosquitos, flies or cockroaches come into contact with the active ingredient in the pesticide they bite the bullet! May you enjoy the sound of silence!
