Kombineer dit met jou huishouding, kinders, manlief, sport, ander besigheid, dan besef jy dit is nie alles so eenvoudig om te balanseer. Regtig, hierdie jaar was dalk die grootste uitdaging so ver. Gelukkig is ons anker stewig en kan ons altyd terugval op die een Persoon wat ons perspektief kan gee.
En soos die winter sy tande al stewiger begin inslaan, dink ek spesifiek met hierdie baie spesiale winter uitgawe aan onthoudae, terugdinkdae… met Vadersdag wat gevier word….. When we designed the Father’s Day page 46, I could not help but to think of how little I knew about the true meaning of Father’s Day when my dad was still alive. He passed away from cancer in 1996, and as a very young women I had little knowledge off. However, since I had my own children, I realized how important a father’s role is and how precious it is to touch the heart of your father in so many ways that gifts can’t do. I miss my dad so much, but I do have another dad, my father-in-law, that I love dearly, and my Heavenly Father – which is my real Dad. My message this month is, if you have your dad still with you, do absolute everything you can to show him how much you love and adore him. Honor and salute him. Why not do something different like a notebook, where family histories & memories are noted and discussed. This makes children stronger and happier and gives you always something to take down memory lane. “Fill the pages with 100 questions from you, your siblings, their spouses and the grandchildren. Leave space where he can fill in the answers. Questions can vary from fun to serious like: (“what do you regret in your life”, your happiest moment, who was your first girlfriend” – especially questions about the family history and unusual questions about our parenting…) You can put photo’s between the questions and end it with a timeline where he can insert important happenings. I hope that this is a month you will remember… To all the Daddy’s – happy living!

Winter-proof your home With winter fast approaching, now is the time to give your home a little love and attention so that you are prepared for the colder months and costs don't unnecessarily soar and plough a hole in your pocket. Thomas Slabbert, Head of Home Loans: “With winter almost upon us we should be aware that properties are vulnerable to attack from the outside elements. More importantly, you should take care of your property before winter arrives and there are a number of practical ways to winter-proof your home and save costs at the same time.” Slabbert went on to say that it was advisable to do an assessment of the outside structure of your house. This
included walls, windows, doors, floors and roofs. “Have a proper look around and see what needs to be repaired, sealed or insulated. Gutters and drains should also be cleaned of leaves and debris on a regular basis. Overflowing gutters and drains could drench walls and cause damage to your house,” he continued to say. “Electricity is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to winter costs. There are a number of measures you can put in place to bring your electricity bill down, and proper insulation of your home is one of them,” added Slabbert. He suggested making sure the home was insulated correctly so that heat was not lost unnecessarily. “Insulation is not just for cold climates. If your home is insulated
correctly it will keep your home cooler in summer as well as keep it warm in winter.” Slabbert advised that energy efficiency was one of the most practical ways to save and suggested investigating alternative methods to bring down the cost of electricity. “Have your geyser inspected or serviced before winter starts, as they are one of the biggest contributors to electricity bills. There are a few ways to save on your geyser bill during winter, which include switching it off during the day, or by wrapping it in a blanket or insulating it so that warmth is not lost.” “The months before winter is an ideal time to get your house in order, so that winter doesn't cause havoc on your bank balance,” concluded Slabbert.

Mediation or a “custody battle”? Continued from May 2014
The misuse of protection orders when going through a divorce has become a prevalent and unfortunate trend in family law resulting therein that a system which was designed to protect against abuse is itself being abused in that some people resort to obtaining interim protection orders, without prior notice to the other party, as an expedited means of obtaining custody of the children, exclusive possession of the marital home and maintenance whilst the divorce is still pending. Magistrates are wary of being blamed for ill effects that may happen when an interim protection order that is purportedly needed is not put into place. Often applications for interim orders, with no sufficient grounds for urgency and on extraordinarily weak evidence are given only cursory attention before being rubber-stamped into place in order to rather err on the side of caution. With a small statement by one parent, under oath, of alleged harm or potential harm, the other parent can be evicted from his/her home, and barred access to and contact with the children. Should the terms of the interim order be breached a warrant of arrest may be issued, resulting in the situation that the ousted party is in jeopardy of being arrested again on the
uncontested strength of an affidavit placed before a policeman without notice to him/her, in which it is stated that the latter has breached “any of the conditions “contained in the relevant order. Even if the allegations of abuse are found to be false and the interim protection order dismissed much harm could already have been done to the children whilst the order prevailed. Often children become afraid of the ousted person. Restricted or supervised visitation with children when not actually necessary may also confuse them. Children are also often mystified as to why a parent suddenly seems disinterested in them while proceedings to dismantle interim protection orders are ongoing. How and why mediation can be a far better alternative? In mediation the parents retains control over the decisions made on behalf of the children. The mediator can meet with the children and get a good understanding of their needs, feelings, concerns and collateral input from teachers, health practitioners, psychologists, therapists and the like. In mediation, unlike in court, the mediator(s) and the parents discuss and agree on how the mediation will be conducted, what will be included,
and how and when it will be concluded. Mediation therefore does not encourage animosity and conflict between parents in the manner that it may happen in court. The whole process is child focused in that a great deal of consideration is given to the understanding what will be in the best interest of the children concerned and how to best meet their needs. These issues are discussed with the parents and negotiations are facilitated so that the parents are encouraged and supported to focus on what is best for the children and not their anger towards each other. When is mediation not an option? It is generally accepted that it is not advisable to mediate where physical violence occurred to an extent that there is an unmanageable power imbalance between the parties. It is also not advisable if there is substance abuse of such a nature which impairs one or both parties' ability to negotiate. Other situations may also not be suitable but same should be assessed when a referral to mediation is made. Although some cases appear not to be appropriate for mediation, it is difficult to identify these in advance, as human beings differ, and some cases that appear to be beyond resolution are actually only difficult to settle.

Deceased Estates and Conveyancing Some thoughts on the legal concept of “massing” and on joint wills “Massing” is a concept often encountered in the administration of deceased estates involving Conveyancing. WHAT IS “MASSING”? Massing takes place when two (or more) persons, in a joint will consolidate or “mass” their estates and dispose of the massed estate as a whole either on the death of the first dying, subject to a limited interest such as an usufruct in favour of the survivor, or on the death of the survivor (in the latter instance the limited right granted to the survivor is in the nature of a fiduciary right). A typical example is where A and B being married in community of property, determine in their joint will that on the death of the first dying their estates should be massed (lumped together or consolidated) and the massed estate bequeathed to their children C and D, subject to a life usufruct in respect of the entire estate, in favour of the survivor. The retention of a limited interest of some sort appears to be an essential component of massing. If in the stated example, no provision was made for the granting of a life usufruct to the survivor, there would not be a massing in the strict sense of the word. Many variations on the “typical” scenario of massing exist. It is possible for parties to mass only a portion of their estates. It is also possible for the survivor to receive a limited interest, not in the entire estate, but only in a portion thereof. Sometimes the parties bequeath the massed estate to the survivor, subject to the condition that on the death of the survivor the massed estate must devolve on the ultimate heirs.
The legal tool of massing is usually employed in the mutual will of parties married to each other in community of property. However there is no restriction as to who may mass their estates. Persons married out of community of property or even relatives, friends or unrelated persons may make use of the concept. WHAT ARE THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR AND CHARACTERISTICS OF MASSING?
A joint will must have been executed by the parties who intend their estates to be massed; The estates of the parties must be consolidated and the massed estate (or a part thereof) disposed of as a unit, i.e. both the assets of the deceased and the assets of the survivor must be bequeathed;
The survivor must adiate to the massing;
A limited interest in the massed estate (such as an usufruct or fiduciary interest) must devolve upon the survivor.
Other characteristics of massing worth noting are:
Disposal of the massed estate may take place, it is suggested, either upon the death of the first dying or the death of the survivor; Anyone may mass their estates, not just persons married in or out of community of property to each other; Either the whole or part of the estate of one party can be massed with either the whole or part of the estate of the other parties;
Massing may be conditional. For example, a will may state that should the survivor remarry, then in that event, the estate of the deceased and the survivor shall be massed.
WHY DO PEOPLE MASS THEIR ESTATES? At first glance massing seems to have highly undesirable consequences for the unfortunate survivor. He/she is effectively giving his/her assets away and in return usually receives no ownership, but a limited real right of some sort, in the whole or part of the massed estate. Why then do testators provide for massing of their assets and why do survivors adiate to massing? Human nature has much to do with the matter: at the time of making of a will, the testators do not know who will be the first dying and which the survivor. As the first dying gets to dispose not only of his/her own, but also his/her cotestator's assets, there is at least one advantage in being the first to depart from this world! “The motive behind the desire to “mass”, is usually the fear that the survivor will dissipate the assets which the first-dying had hoped would otherwise benefit the children of the marriage, or that a survivor's fresh venture into matrimony will end in the new spouse filching the family patrimony. It may, however, merely be joint affection for the offspring of the marriage.”

Skylights in Interior Design A window in a ceiling or a skylight is a great addition to the interior design where there is little natural lighting. Sauna vs Steam Room What is a Sauna? A sauna has low humidity and is much hotter than a steam room. There are 2 styles of saunas: conventional saunas warm the air in the room and infrared saunas that warm objects using charcoal or active carbon fibers has heating material. They are often heated with stones placed on some kind of heater (usually electric or woodburning); water is poured on the stones in small intervals that produce a thick cloud of steam. This has the effect of raising the temperature in the sauna by several degrees but the steam quickly disappears. Saunas are usually wood-lined and have wooden benches to sit on. They are insulated to retain the heat but there is no concern about moisture damage to the outside structure. People often use towels to place on the wood because it is uncomfortable to sit on extremely hot wooden benches. What are Steam Rooms? A steam room is a virtually airtight room where steam is fed with the help of a steam generator building up a humidity level of around
100%. Steam rooms are usually finished in ceramic tile and the ceiling must be slanted so that the steam buildup does not drip from the ceiling onto the bathers. The primary goal of steam rooms is to make the bather sweat for detoxification purposes. Health Benefits Saunas and steam rooms have similar effects on the body. Both cause increased blood flow through better circulation. They dilate blood vessels resulting in a lowering of blood pressure. The heat in steam rooms and saunas causes a lot of perspiration, which releases salt and some toxins from the body. Other health benefits include increased metabolism, an easing of tension in the muscles and promoting feelings of relaxation. The moist heat in steam rooms also helps with nasal congestion. Effects on skin Saunas and steam rooms open the pores in the skin and make you sweat, which releases some toxins from the body and cleanses and rejuvenates the skin. This may be
beneficial for people with acne because impurities in the skin are one of the causes of acne. Risks A common risk is dehydration and hyperthermia. Always stay wellhydrated and drink water before and after using a sauna. Avoid steam rooms if you have very high or low blood pressure, epilepsy or have consumed any alcohol, tranquilizers or antibiotics. Some people find the dry heat of the sauna to be uncomfortable to breathe. Those with respiratory problems like sinus congestion and asthma may prefer the moist heat of the steam bath. Weight loss Though some people claim that using saunas and steam rooms helps in losing weight, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Is your pool ready for winter time? With the winter upon us, virtually everybody forgets about the swimming pool. More and more people keep on swimming during the winter months and use a heat hump to warm the pool Most of those who don't swim in winter, don't even take care of the pool during these 4 months. When you are on a Pool Service Contract we advise our clients to keep the service on in the winter time. The advantages are not only visual as your pool is also a nice garden feature, but many times you save money because starting up after a winter when nothing was done to the pool, can cost you more money. A swimming pool pump switched off for months will most probably need bearing and mechanical seal replacement much quicker than a pump which kept on working. This is because the water inside the pump now has 4 months to corrode the seals and bearings because of the pump being switched off.

Roasted Carrot Soup I really believe when you roast the veggies you are using in a soup that it gives a way better flavour. This carrot soup is delicious and makes a good change from butternut soup. 1 kg carrots, peeled and cut into biggish pieces 1 T olive oil 1 T unsalted butter ½ medium onion, diced 1 large rib celery, diced 1 T minced fresh ginger 2 cups chicken stock (or vegetable stock) 1 t salt 1/8 t ground white pepper Chopped fresh chives for garnish (optional) Put the carrots in a medium baking dish (any dish that will hold
the carrots in a single layer without touching) and drizzle them with the olive oil. Toss them to coat well and roast, stirring once halfway through roasting, until they're tender, blistered, and lightly browned in a few places, about 1 hour. Melt the butter in a medium pot set over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until it's translucent and fragrant, 2 to 3 mins. Stir in the celery and ginger and cook until the celery softens a bit and the onions start to brown, 4 to 5 mins. Add the roasted carrots, chicken stock, salt,

There’s no snake in my grass! “Oh, that lovely scent, they use it in their food, it’s too good to be true, should we smell a rat?” LEMON GRASS – CYMBOPOGON citratus. Countries of origin: India and Tropical Asia This is an aromatic, clump forming plant that strongly reminds one of Pampas grass. The leaves are slender and hard, with a definite lemon scent and the bright green clump can reach a height of up to one meter and is a beautiful focal point in any garden. Propagation is primarily through root stock division – take some of the younger ones on the outside of the clump. Lemon grass will grow in any place and in any soil as long as the drainage is adequate, seeing that they don’t like wet feet. Use enough compost and add some of Efekto’s bonemeal or superphosphate to aid strong root development. Supplement feeding every four months can be done by giving a liquid fertilizer like Efekto’s Seagro or Nitrosol.
WINTER TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME for any planting – the metabolism of plants is low, the sap flow slow and therefore plants can establish with the minimum of stress to ensure lush, healthy growth when things start to liven up in spring. The same applies for lemon grass, your plant will be happily settled by the end of August when your first important cutting back is necessary to ensure a bushy clump with ample foliage, readily available when needed. Don’t both to dry lemon grass, there is simply no comparison to the fresh product! CULINARY Lemon essence (chiefly for baking and desserts) is commercially produced from this plant. Hot or cold, lemon grass makes a very refreshing drink – for a variety on the theme, add a few fresh mint leafs. As far as vegetable dishes are concerned, lemon grass goes well with carrots and peas. Add to marinades, any curry dishes, fish, chicken and rice. Due to the high fibre content (which also makes it unsuitable for fresh consumption)
leafs and stems won’t boil away and should be removed before serving. This will be facilitated by tying together with a piece of string. MEDICINAL Relieves high blood pressure and assists the liver to detox and is generally a good tonic for the whole body. Take note: lemon grass should not be used by diabetics. Always remember, natural remedies are a matter of “prevention if better than cure” and can give relief to a large extent. H o w e v e r, i t i s recommended to get professional advice and help when required.
