SOULS Sycamore
OF
THE IDEA BEHIND
SOULS of Sycamore
Souls of Sycamore was originally inspired by Humans of New York, a photoblog of individuals living throughout New York. Created by Brandon Stanton, his original goal was to take 10,000 photos of various New Yorkers and then plot their pictures on a photomap. He accompanies each photo taken with a story, quote, or caption in order for viewers and readers to get to know the person being interviewed and photographed. Some quotes are simple, lighthearted, and humorous while others are quite emotional and heart wrenching. He began sharing his project with the world by posting his collection on social media, specifically on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. He has gained over eight million followers and over fourteen million on his personal Humans of New York blog. These numbers continue to rise as he keeps his fans updated daily with glimpses into the lives of normal human beings. Stanton has expanded his project, traveling to different countries to look into the lives of people around the world. He has contributed to different charity events and even embarked on a 50-day “World Tour in partnership with the United Nations spanning twelve countries around the world, collecting portraits and stories along the way. Countries on this trip included Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ukraine, India, Nepal, Vietnam, and Mexico. The human interest and relationship felt between viewer and the person being showcased creates a sense of community. It touches the lives of other people in a simple way. Everyone has a story, a background, a past, and that is what makes Humans of New York is an inspiration, because it shares those stories with the world.
Souls issue The idea of Souls of Sycamore isn’t new. In fact, it was done last year for the first time. We loved the outcome of the issue so much, that it was decided that we would reintroduce the idea again this year, making it an annual issue idea. Our motive for Souls of Sycamore is to showcase individuals whether they are students, teachers, or
staff behind the curtain. We want to hear the voices of Sycamore to understand what makes our school thrive. It is vital that people are understood. By looking into the lives of people that make up our community, we think we can bring this issue to life. With the help of our staff, we collected many photos representing SHS.

We provide information and editorial leadership concerning school, national and world issues. We also provide a public forum for the exchange of ideas and viewpoints and give coverage to newsworthy events directly related to our diverse school population. These viewpoints are purely from the staff of The Leaflet, and not the administration.

Only smiles were seen at Homecoming as couples danced with one another, and individuals showed off their killer dance moves.

“We all danced and sang along to the songs all night long and I don’t think anyone ever felt bored. We all loved the songs that were played and everyone felt like they could dance however much they wanted and nobody would judge them, no matter how ridiculous we looked! 3

“I live for the intense, nailbiting finishes that happen almost every match. The thrill I get after one of them is an unmatchable feeling.

The performances put on by the band blow its audience away as well as their hardwork, dedication, and loyalty to the program.
10
“There’s no feeling quite like walking out on the football field and playing for our audience. There’s such a rush in having people see our hardwork pay off.”
11
“Theatre is a way to express myself through other people and other characters. I can experience things through other people that I couldn’t experience on my own.”

“It’s been great to be involved with this school and do the sport I love, which is dance. I love dancing to be one with the music and my body. I’ve loved the girls and this year it is really looking up toward the future.”
