So what should you post? One particularly great thing about Instagram is that it isn’t just for still photography. There’s a lot of directions to go with each post, whether it’s posting shots from behind-the-scenes, videos, animated GIFs, holiday-themed content, contests and giveaways, reposts of followers ... the list goes on. HOW TO E X PA N D YOUR HIVE Bumble BFF is a subsection of Bumble, a Tinder-esque dating website. The basic premise for Bumble BFF is that you are presented with the profiles of girls in your area who are also on the hunt for a new BFF, and you swipe right if you come across someone you might be interested in. In the year 2016, it seems only reasonable that the most basic of human interactions be committed online. We text, we Skype, we find love, and now, we find our new bestie.
Keep Reading to Learn about Bumble BFF As someone who’s moved cross-country quite a few times, I’ve had to become accustomed to putting myself out there in order to make connections and form new friendships. I joined a sorority, socialized with people at work and was always the first to introduce myself at a party. When I moved to Toronto with my boyfriend and became self-employed, I realized how difficult it was to get to know new people and decided to try the new Bumble BFF app. It’s basically Tinder for friends, and it seemed like an ideal way to help me find my dream squad. Here’s what I learned.

Because users have not only been requesting the feature, but have already been using the platform for that purpose, the company explained. Specifically, they have seen users using Bumble as a means to connect with new friends when moving to or just visiting a new city. While Bumble wouldn’t disclose the specific algorithmic differences between a regular match and a BFF match, the company did say that they are paying “very close attention to interests and friends,” which they obtain from a user’s Facebook profile.

As I browsed, I discovered that Bumble BFF works just like Tinder; swipe right if you like the look of someone, swipe left if you don’t. I have to say, it felt a little strange to swipe left and essentially decide whether I wanted to be friends with someone based on their profile photo. Never, in real life, have I rejected a potential friend based on their appearance in a couple of photographs. Just like Tinder, if you haven’t made up your mind about a potential match, you can click on their profile to see more photos, and to read a very brief bio — that is, if they’ve written anything.

Making new friends can be intimidating, but it’s definitely rewarding. After all, friends form a big part of our life for most of us. They are the ones who walk through life together, share our ups and downs, and pains and joys. Without friends, life wouldn’t be the same at all. We wouldn’t be who we are if not for them.

Am I incapable of sustaining a conversation? I powered on, swiping right on every match to maximise my chances of meeting the friendship equivalent of "the one". While doing so, I spotted a colleague of mine and — of course — immediately swiped right. My colleague and I decided meeting up in person with some of our connections would be the best way to move things forward. After all, I didn't want to end up with a bunch of pen pals. It was apparent that persuading people to meet up was going to be challenging — did my connections just want to remain pen pals? Ever hopeful, we set a date, we picked a venue, and we crossed our fingers. Two people showed up on the night, which — although a little disappointing at first — actually worked out pretty well. were able to focus our attention on one person at a time, engaging in a conversation that went beyond the smalltalk I'd grown tired of. Both women were a little shy at first, and even told us they were relieved we hadn't catfished them. While talking to one of the ladies, I realised we were hitting it off. She was pretty trendy, wearing some oversized, wire-frame glasses and a quirky tartan skirt. She, too, was a writer, and we had plenty to talk about on that front. Despite having lots in common, it was an effort to keep the conversation going and to ensure there were no awkward pauses. It felt very apparent that we were total strangers. By the end of the meet-up, I felt that I hadn't quite made a new friend, but an acquaintance that might someday turn into a friend. Which, thinking about it, sounds like the natural order of things. In a city that sometimes feels like an unfriendly place, it reassures me to know that there's an online community where other women introduce themselves with compliments, and are actively seeking other women's friendship. If I do keep using BumbleBFF, I'll likely use it as an onlineonly community to chat to other women; making
e-friends rather than real-life friends; because woman-on-woman positivity might just be more important than having a wingwoman at a party.
There's an online community where other women introduce themselves with compliments, and are actively seeking other women's friendship.
If you take a look at the people out there who seem to make friends easily, they were probably seclusive themselves at some point. Their social skills were likely all picked up over time. For this same reason, you can learn to become more sociable through time and practice.

The first step in the quest for your new BFF begins with creating a profile that is linked with your Facebook. You then add a small bio, in my case it read “Peace, love and Netflix,” because you can’t get anymore basic (and honest) than that, and you set the distance you are willing to hunt for a new best friend to hand.
girls in your area who are also on the hunt for a new BFF, and you swipe right if you come across someone you might be interested in.
The Hunt Once you complete your profile, you begin the real process of selecting your new best friend. You are presented with profile after profile of people in your area, who are also seeking a new bestie. 99 percent of these people are women, in search of the Christina Yang to their Meredith Grey, or the Sookie to their Lorelai. Every so often I would come across a profile with a relatively sane looking individual who’s bio read something along the lines of “Books, Ice cream, and Netflix” and would swipe right, hoping they too would find me worthy of a right swipe and we could move on to phase three of the Bumble BFF experiment. Most times, they didn’t.

The Waiting Period As with any location based website, the number of people in your area is very limited, and each day you are met with the dreaded “no more people in your area” message. While you could expand your location parameters even further than you already have, sometimes you just have to wait. While I expected my matches to begin filtering in within an hour of my signing up, I discovered that was actually not the case. It took almost a full 24 hours for my first match to appear, and by the time that finally occurred, I was over the moon.
I was over the moon

Not every match is a winner This is a lesson I learned very quickly. Just because you think their bio was funny and they swiped right on you too, does NOT mean that you are destined for one another. I endured so many awkward conversations, about a potential BFF’s ailing pet reptiles, their need for orthopedic footwear, and the struggle of finding a good x-rated t-shirt store when you’re new to an area. Needless to say, these girls and I are not on the track to best friendship.
Winners are few and far between, but they do exist Every conversation on Bumble BFF only lasts for 24 hours after the most recent message. So after days of scouring the app for real potential BFF material, I finally found one. With a bio that claimed she was looking for the “Lane to her Rory, I knew we would get along just fine. After a lovely conversation about everything from nail polish colors to our favorite book to movie adaptations. While our conversation was nice, and I had several similar to this one with other women on the app, all of them eventually fizzled out after a few days.
What came of it all After a few days of chatting with several potential BFFs in my area, the inevitable question would arise, should we meet in person. This question was usually met with the potential BFF giving vague answers about possibly meeting in a week or two; agreeing to meet, and then cancelling within a day of the meet, or ending the conversation entirely. While most of the women on this app seemed beyond excited to make idle chit chat from the safety of their smartphones, the possibility of a face to face interaction halted even the most enthusiastic of potential BFFs.
What I learned In this day and age, finding a BFF on the internet shouldn’t sound as strange to us as it does. If people can find the love of their lives on Tinder, why does finding a new best friend on a site like Tinder sound so bizarre? While the concept is actually pretty cool, finding people who are mutually interested in starting new friendships with other people in their area, the practice does find something to be lacking. I have no doubt that in the coming years this app and others like it will develop even better user interfaces and become what their developers had no doubt envisioned. Until then, Bumble BFF serves as a decent way for people who are new to an area to potentially make new friends,

THE WOMEN’S MARCH ON WASHINGTON The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us - immigrants of all statuses, Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault - communities are hurting and scared.
We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear. In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. Liberals are usually Pro Choice which means that they believe in legalized abortions. The reasoning behind this belief is usually that the baby is not yet a person, the mother’s life and well being is more important, and that women should always have a choice if they want an abortion.

We’re not just prolifers who happen to be feminists. We’re feminists first and foremost. A small group of marchers associated with the pro-life publication Life Matters Journal will be there to support “this actual affirmation of peace and human rights, not just for women, but for all people of any or no gender, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, age, or disability,” said Rosemary Geraghty, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who works as the publication’s the social-media coordinator. The only difference between her list and Bland’s list is that her list includes “the pre-born.” Other pro-life activists are attracted to the message of women’s empowerment, but they’re not interested in opposing the incoming president. “I’m not going to protest Trump’s presidency. It’s done. It’s over,” said Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who started an organization to help anti-abortion health-care workers find jobs that line up with their views. “But I do think he needs women to hold him accountable.” She listed workplace inequality, the pay gap, and women’s lack of access to health care as issues she wants to see highlighted under the next administration. “I’m just planning to go and join the march,” she said. “I have no desire to protest or anything like that.” Catherine Glenn Foster, a D.C.-area lawyer who also works as a senior fellow at the Charlotte Lozier Institute—the research arm of the pro-life advocacy group Susan B. Anthony List—said she’s going neither to protest nor to stand in solidarity. “I would rather express that I’m committed to the march’s ideals and would hold all of us to a greater realization of those ideals of non-violence for all,” she said. Some groups seem more interested in spinning up controversy than actually participating, though. Students for Life of America has invited hundreds of women to attend on Facebook, proclaiming that “we will not sit by as Planned Parenthood, our nation’s abortion Goliath and a sponsor of this march, betrays women into thinking abortion is their only choice.” Hawkins, who served in the Bush administration before taking the top job in the campus-based group, complained that Students for Life applied to be a partner in the march and never heard back, although they did receive an email encouraging all students to attend, she said. Bland said she was skeptical that any group would be rejected or ignored outright. The march has largely been put together by volunteers, many with little or no organizing experience, she said, and as a result, it’s been a little chaotic.
It looks terrible that any pro-life group would go out and protest women
While the pro-lifers I spoke with saw the pro-choice partnerships as a mistake, involving Planned Parenthood “was a no-brainer for us,” said Bland. Especially with a fight over the Affordable Care Act ahead, “one of the challenges facing women in this incoming administration is access to reproductive care,” she said. While pro-lifers might object to the organization’s abortion services, 97 percent of what Planned Parenthood “offers are reproductive-health services that are desperately needed by women all over this country.” And yet, the march isn’t primarily about reproductive rights, Bland said, or even narrowly committed to one view on issues like abortion. “We’ve had some really interesting discussions with conservative folks and folks who identify as prolife,” she said. While the organizers’ general position is that “a woman’s body is a woman’s body is a woman’s body,” she said, “I can’t tell you how many emails I received from women who identify as conservative who are marching with us on January 21 because there are so many other concerns.” In all the emails they’ve gotten—close to 1 million, Bland estimated—women have expressed worries about cultural misogyny, the state of ed-

Staunchly pro-choice advocates might argue that there’s no room for anti-abortion views in any women’s movement: “The ability to decide when or whether to have children is key to women’s opportunity to be financially secure and pursue their dreams,” wrote Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, in an op-ed for Time in 2015. But the pro-life women who are attending the Women’s March on Washington are going to keep showing up.“I know people want to say we don’t exist, or we’re an oxymoron,” Herndon-De La Rosa said. “But we do exist, and we are true feminists. The Glamorous Look. This office outfit is for all those sexy women who also run the world, but prefer to do it in glam office attire: bright lips, sky high heels and office outfits that can go from 9 am to late dinner cocktails. The tip is always in the posh fabulous heels. Expensive perfumes, rich fabrics, pencil skirts and silky blouses, long trousers, statement golden necklaces, brand watches and massive bags or clutches. Sparkly Pumps (or flats): These could be metallic, glitter, jacquard or even sequined. The idea is to find a pair of pumps or flats that elevate an outfit. Shoes that add an extra bit of oomph to your look. I mention pumps because they are the most appropriate for everyday; from work to play. Pumps are perfect for the office or for a date with your significant other. Metallic Fabrics: Wear head-to-toe metallic or just add a little glimmer with a shirt or handbag. Your outfit will surely be a standout if you add anything metallic. It shouldn’t take long for you to find a metallic item you love. There’s a metallic version of everything from coats to shoes. Pair your metallic with a neutral color palette. Silver metallic pairs well with blacks, grays, and white. Golds and silvers pair well with creams, pinks, and grays. Embellished Pieces: It doesn’t have to be the holidays for you to wear embellished pieces for added sparkle. As long as you take into consideration your activities for the day and pair them with neutrals then embellished pieces work year round. Embellished pieces add instant glamour, whether it’s a sequined top, studded jacket, crystal-embellished blouse, jeweled sweater or heels. gray. NEWS IN 140 CHARACTERS American society is built on a culture of impatience. Americans focus on time – time wasted, time saved, time lost – using every spare moment to prevent missing a beat. As social media’s presence in society grows, many news outlets are working to feed the “I want it now” desires of consumers.
Digital technology has dramatically reshaped the news and media industries in the past decade. We’ve left behind a world where established news brands could rely on reaching large audiences and hence secure advertising revenues. Now there is huge uncertainty about business models, even as digital gives consumers more convenient access to news than ever before. The emergence of new players, including BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post, coupled with the growth of social networking, the introduction of smartphones and the evolution of online advertising, have contributed to a media landscape that is changing at considerable speed. Eighty-five percent of millennials say that staying up-to-date with the latest news is at least somewhat important, according to research conducted by the Media Insight Project. That number is staggering considering that many people blame millennials for the death of the modern newspaper.
Can you trust it? Get the low down on the next few spreads about the changes social media news is creating and become more confident in the reliability of your own news sources.

Social media locks people off in the world they started with
Hashtag Humiliation The following excerpt is taken from the book “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” by Jon Ronson which looks at the unsavory side of twitter and what it means for businesses and individuals alike. In it, Ronson looks at the herd mentality and scandals that have one epicenter: social media. “[Social media] locks people off in the world they started with and prevents them from finding out anything different. They get trapped in the system of feedback reinforcement. Twitter passes lots of information around, but it tends to be the kind of information that people know that others in their particular network will like. So what you get is a kind of mutual grooming. One person sends on information that they know others will respond to in accepted ways. And then, in return, those others will like the person who gave them that piece of information. So information becomes a currency through which you buy friends and become accepted into the system. That makes it very difficult for bits of information that challenge the accepted views to get in. They tend to get squeezed out. When someone says something or does something that disturbs the agreed protocols of the system, the other parts react furiously and try to eject that destabilising fragment and regain stability. And so the idea that there is another world of other people who have other ideas is marginalised in our lives.”

Pay off variable private loans first If you have this type of loan—which makes up 15 percent of total U.S. education debt—this may seem like an odd move. After all, the interest rates on variable private loans (given by banks and credit

unions) are currently lower than the fixed rates on federally backed and private loans. But historically this situation is unusual, and if the economy improves, interest hikes are probable in the near future. “Rates could climb 5 to 6 percent over the next four years, making your monthly burden unmanageable,” says Kantrowitz. That’s why it’s wise to unload these balances as soon as possible. If you can, pay twice the required amount until you have eliminated this debt and make only the minimum monthly contribution toward your fixed-rate federal loans, since those rates cannot increase.

Be willing to take a lower salary and to commit to staying at a job for a specific time period in exchange for a payment towards your schooling
Consider consolidation If you graduated before July 1, 2006, it pays to roll multiple federal loans into one—you’ll lock in an interest rate that’s lower than what you’re paying on each separate loan. Earned a diploma since then? All federal student loans now carry fixed interest rates, so there’s no financial benefit to consolidating. (And it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to combine any variable private loans.) Nevertheless, if you have trouble keeping track of

ments make your life easier. What you may not know is that all government and some private lenders charge a slightly lower interest rate (usually 0.25 percent less) if you make your monthly remittance this way. Over 25 years of payments, you’ll reduce your repayment period by at least a year, says Reyna Gobel, the author of Graduation Debt ($15, amazon.com). Best of all, you can sign up now, even if you’ve been repaying your loans for years. The most expensive college in the United States—Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, New York—charges $44,220 a year for tuition. And that doesn’t include fees and room and board, which can cost an additional $14,000. Even more disturbing is that the annual cost of a college education has risen by 130 percent in the past 20 years, according to the College Board. As a result, Americans have racked up about $1 trillion in education debt from both federal and private student and parent loans. “People are borrowing twice as much as they were a decade ago because grants and scholarships are not keeping up with the escalating costs of college,” says Mark Kantrowitz, the publisher of FinAid.org and FastWeb.com, free online financial-aid resources. To wit: Graduates of the class of 2011 have an average of $27,200 in debt, up from about $17,600 in 2001.

Getting Around
How to Travel on a Budget
My first stop when seeking cheap flights is Skyscanner.com. This no-frills website provides a fast way to determine which European budget airlines serve the route you're eyeing and helps you compare prices.Although flights may look cheap at first glance, it's important to factor in the extra costs, such as the price for getting to and from the airport. Also, since budget airlines are not making much money Rent an affordable car that can off road well for your weekend trip to the country
on your ticket, they look for other ways to pad their profits, such as charging for food and drink, priority boarding, seat reservations, checking bags and checking in at the airport (instead of online). With a little planning, a few sacrifices and light packing, travelers can avoid most of these.
When I was 18, I wrote a postcard to my grandmother from Austria, describing how I slept for free on the porch of a hostel in Innsbruck. While I wouldn't do that now, it's fun to reminisce about my backpacking days. Back then, bars were inundated with smoke, currency changes were required after each border crossing, and it took about nine hours to travel from London to Paris. Yet despite the changes, the adventure and thrills of good, old-fashioned vagabonding survive. One
One mode of transportation I advise backpackers to steer clear of is a car. While car-rental prices may look enticing, this is hardly ever the cheapest option for getting around. The daily fee may be low, but the extras, such as tolls, gas and parking, make it far more expensive than it seems. Also, Europe is dotted with automatic speed guns and cameras that will issue a ticket and track you down even across the pond. I know this because my own 20-something-year-old son was photographed speeding and received a $100 ticket with a $100 service charge tacked on by the rental company.
of the most amazing changes over the past decade is the speed and ease with which you can get around. In my 20s, I traveled around Europe on a two-month Eurail pass that cost about $200. I slept on trains as much as I could to save time and money. But fast and cheap transportation options—especially the proliferation of discount airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet, have changed the way budget travelers can see Europe.
The adventure and thrills of good, oldfashioned vacation bonding survives.
When traveling to Switzerland there is one rule that you must know before you get there. Using salt and pepper to season your food at a restaurant is considered to be very offensive to the ones preparing the meal. You never mess with the people who make your food so you will just have to eat it.

Saving on Accommodations When it comes to economical accommodations, hostels are still some of the cheapest beds in town. But while being a member of the Hostelling International network used to be the mark of a respectable hostel, that's no longer the case. Most independent hostels have just as high standards, and they are often more interesting and fun. The best way to find hostels these days is through Hostelworld.com. Another way to sleep inexpensively is to rent a bed in someone's home. Airbnb.com is a great way to find such accommodations, with its extensive list of options ranging from futons in the living room to entire apartments. You can read reviews to make sure it matches what you're looking for,

Tours & Memories
One thing I always encourage young travelers to do is to keep a journal
One recent development in Europe is the advent of free walking tours. While the tour technically doesn't cost anything, guides work solely on tips (and they make sure to remind you of that). At first I wasn't hot on these "free" tours, as guides— generally expat students who have memorized a script—emphasize stories over the strictly academic and are known to take some liberties with historical events and characters. But they're still enjoyable, and for travelers on a budget, they provide an affordable way to get to know a place. One thing I always encourage young travelers to do is to keep a journal (or these days, a blog). As a travel writer and teacher, one of my favorite discoveries is that the journal entries I wrote as a scruffy 20-year-old in 1975 still resonate with the generally much-less-scruffy 20-year-old American exploring Europe in 2013. Today the same timeless magic is there—it's just a lot more convenient and comfortable to find it.
