Cheonneth Strickland Let me share with you what has been happening around our Conference. A FEW HIGHLIGHTS • There are some changes to the status of some of our groups or companies. The Sydney Indonesian Company will become an organised Church. They will be called the Sydney Indonesian Seventh-day Adventist Church. • The Hurstville Chinese group that meets in the hall of the Hurstville Adventist Church, will receive Company status. They will be called the Hurstville Chinese Seventh-day Adventist Company. • We have a church plant starting in Albion Park, which is down past Wollongong. • 2020 baptisms were down from previous years. We baptised 89 people and had 9 professions of faith.
Chief Financial Officer
Colin Raymond
Where have the 74 days gone since I started work at the Greater Sydney Conference? Life sure moves fast. The 2020 financial statements have been finalized for our church, conference, and school entities, and all received unqualified audit opinions. The auditors commented on the high quality of our reports and standards of our financial processes—a wonderful commendation of the work of our church treasurers, school business managers and conference finance team.
• Membership at 1 January 2020 was 9771 and ended the year with 9807 once deaths and transfers were taken into consideration. We had an overall growth increase of 0.37%. FROM SCHOOLS LTD • Adventist Education continues to be a blessing to our students and their families. A number of our schools have had Week of Worship (WOW) services this term. Many decisions were made for God. One school had 195 requests for prayer, 105 request Bible studies and 84 decide they want to follow Jesus publicly through baptism. Praise God for these decisions. FROM AGED CARE LTD • The Adventist Aged Care Residential Facility and Retirement Village rebuild and refurbishment at Kings Langley was officially opened. A 45-bed wing and 21 new independent living units was opened on April 20 by the Federal Member for Greenway, Ms. Michelle Rowland MP, and Pastor Terry Johnson. Also in attendance was Mr Mark Taylor MP, Member for Seven Hills, and Julie Griffins, Blacktown Deputy Major. Thank you for your faithfulness to God and please continue to pray for our churches, schools and aged care facilities.
Looking in the rear-vision mirror, how did we do in 2020 despite the impact of Covid-19? • The School Company made an operating surplus of just over $3m, with five out of six GS schools contributing to the result. Enrollments in P-12 increased by 94 students, bringing total enrolment to 2,934. Completion of Stages 4 & 5 at Wahroonga School enabled play and basketball areas and the fit-out to the Wedge. This result was achieved while keeping within our two key KPIs of debt per student and debt ceilings. • Church Ltd ended 2020 with a surplus of $1.44m, with retained tithe receipts of $12.58m, showing an increase of 6.3% over the previous year. We gratefully acknowledge the faithfulness of members in returning tithes and thank our Almighty God for His bountiful provision. • E-Giving was the preferred means of returning tithes for almost 50% of our membership. As we move into 2021, we continue to place our trust in “Him who will supply every need according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19).
CELEBRATIONS AT KINGS LANGLEY AGED CARE By Kathryn Carey The Adventist Aged Care Residential Facility and Retirement Village innovative 28 million dollar rebuilding and refurbishment of its’ Kings Langley complex is now complete. The project included construction of 21 new independent living units as well as complete refurbishment of its existing Residential Aged Care Facility including building a new 45-bed wing. The Federal Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland MP unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening on Thursday 20th April, along side Pr Terry Johnson, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Adventist Aged Care. Mr Mark Taylor MP, Member for Seven Hills and Julie Griffiths, Blacktown Deputy Mayor, were also in attendance along with staff, residents and families. “I pay tribute to Adventist Aged Care for its innovative, needsbased care model which will allow older Blacktown residents to live independently and with greater dignity – particularly those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. These new and upgraded facilities will ensure that Blacktown seniors – who helped shape this city into the wonderful place it is today – can continue to live safely in the comunity they love” commented Mrs Rowland. The new modern Residential Aged Care Facility includes two wings specifically designed to cater for the needs of residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The entire complex is fitted with an advanced security system. “The residential facility includes a number of sophisticated design features that allow staff to set parameters for the management of an individual residents’ needs, eliminating the outdated one-size-fits-all approach,” Mr Johnson noted “And further to aiding a client’s experience, in some areas staff don’t wear uniforms, often sharing meals with residents. This helps to create a home-like environment, so clients with memory loss are more relaxed.” In addition to the residential facility, there are 72 independent living units co-located within the complex. “Co-location of independent living units and residential care on one integrated campus is an ideal arrangement for couples when one partner requires a higher level of care than the other” says Adventist Aged Care Sydney Managing Director, Brian Swanepoel. ADRA’S RESPONSE TO THE FLOODS
EDUCATION
A couple months ago the east coast of Australia was battered by torrential rain. Even though the sun is now shining, a lot of damage occurred due to the record flood levels in much of New South Wales. ADRA Australia is responding in two main ways: directly supporting affected households with cash grants and supporting the wider community by providing cash grants to our network of Seventh-day Adventist Churches that are willing and able to respond to their communities’ needs. HOW YOU CAN HELP If your church is in an affected area and would like to respond, you can receive funding from ADRA to support your response. This could include, but is not limited to, preparing emergency food hampers for affected individuals and first responders, opening your church hall as an evacuation centre, and helping with the clean-up. If your church would like to serve in this way, visit https://bit.ly/3umqM8C for more details. Here are other ways: • Fundraising for ADRA. Fundraising for ADRA. If your church is not in a flood-affected area but would still like to support, why not raise funds? Donating money is fast, flexible and the most effective way to help in the aftermath of an emergency. A list of ideas is available via the link above. • Grants for Churches. If your church would like to apply for a cash grant to respond to the floods, you will need to submit a National Program Proposal Template form. Contact GSC ADRA Director Malcolm Rea for a copy of this form. • Grants for Households. If you or someone you know has been affected by the floods, get in touch with Malcolm Rea via email at malcolmrea@adventist.org.au or phone at 02 9868 6522 or 0401 631 584. I’ve often heard it said that people in our city are not interested in Jesus. They’re too affluent, distracted with the lures of life, and very much comfortable in their own space. While there’s certainly some truth to the idea that many Sydneysiders live a life of plenty, I believe that more than we think might be interested in Jesus. Why? Well, the words of Jesus seem to indicate they are: “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” As He looked upon the crowd, Jesus couldn’t help but notice that the people were "harassed and helpless.” In compassion He responded, telling His disciples to pray for more workers because the harvest was full and ready! Do you know anyone who feels harassed and helpless in our time? Someone dealing with anxiety, depression, or a lack of purpose? Maybe you know someone who has been through a messy
breakup, is being manipulated by someone else, or is self-medicating with alcohol or other substances. I believe that many people in our city have landed on tough times. For example, last week as we met with a number of youth leaders from various regions of Sydney, one of the challenges they mentioned was the number of teenagers getting involved in unhealthy street culture. The leaders had a deep burden for these young people that had wandered into an unhealthy cycle of life. The words “harassed and helpless” or “distressed and dispirited”, as another translation says, sound like a description for a lot of people across Greater Sydney. And the idea that people are not interested in Jesus sounds more like a myth. In fact, I would go so far as to say that perhaps the real issue is that we have not been prayerful enough about God leading us to those He wants to bring across our path. Let’s not stay there! On November 13 we will be running a youth rally called Common Ground. Here’s the cool thing: it’s not going to be designed for Adventist youth. It’s going to be designed for the “distressed and dispirited”—the young people God brings into our paths over the coming year. Here’s what you can do until that time: 1. Grab a friend and ask God to lead you both to someone who is open to Jesus (Luke 10:17; 16) GROUND YOUTH RALLY. The Holy Spirit will lead you in this – giving you wisdom to make the right call at the right time (Luke 12:11-12)

Matthew 9:35-38
Regional Youth Leader Meetings In April, Youth Leaders across Sydney were trained on how to lead life groups and reach their friends for Jesus.
2. When God leads you to that person, pray for them with your friend and in your personal prayer time, care for them in a tangible way, and then look for an opportunity to share Jesus with them. 3. As you journey with this person over the year and build a friendship with them, consider inviting them to a youth social, a bible study group, your local church, and the Common Ground youth rally. The Holy Spirit will lead you in this, giving you wisdom to make the right call at the right time (Luke 12:11-12). Feeling a little nervous about all this reach-people-forJesus stuff? No need to fear—“For God has not given
us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7). And if you want some more training on how to share your faith well, register for the World Changers Bible and Leadership Intensive Weekend taking place from June 25-28 at Crosslands Youth and Convention Centre. This is the perfect place to be equipped as an active disciple of Jesus Christ. (Spots running out fast!) God Bless! Pr Simon Gigliotti – Youth Director, Greater Sydney Conference
Fusion Youth Leaders Training In February, Youth Leaders across Sydney met to talk about how they can do mission in the city.

EDUCATION EDUCATION WAHROONGA ADVENTIST SCHOOL The Future Project is a unique collaboration between scientists, engineers, and our secondary school students, that is designed to inspire and equip the next generation. To achieve this, our students are provided with the opportunity to work on and be mentored through a variety of research projects guided by leading scientists and engineers. A warm congratulations to Year 11 students Renee and Fraser, who have both been selected to take part in The Future Project for 2021 as Senior Research Interns. “I am thrilled to be a part of a program that gives me the opportunity, as a student, to participate in unprecedented research in science,” says Renee. “I also get to learn valuable skills that I can take through my HSC and into future job opportunities.” Renee and Fraser were chosen as part of the final 20 external participants out of a total 200 applicants. They will attend The Future Project weekly and during school holiday time at an industry-standard research facility at The King’s School. Fraser adds, “The opportunity is amazing: to work with upcoming scientific prodigies on endeavours that will support real people and are improving this world.” Congratulations to Renee and Fraser! We know that both students will make the most of this amazing opportunity.
MOUNTAIN VIEW ADVENTIST COLLEGE Enrolment is now open for the Mountain View Adventist College Scholarship Program for 2022. College scholarships will be awarded across five categories (Academic, Leadership, Service, All Rounder and First Nations), with each scholarship providing up to 100% of the tuition component of students’ school fees. Applications close 25th June, 2021. To apply, visit https://mvac.adventist.edu.au. Mountain View Adventist College is well known for being a thriving multi-cultural school that combines Christian values with quality education. Here is what Monica, the parent of one of our Year 6 students, had to say about the college:
My child has gained a tremendous amount of confidence within her academic learning. Mountain View provides a nurturing learning environment which encourages children to feel confident within themselves and around others. We have been a part of the school for 7 years and I have no hesitation in recommending the school.
HILLS ADVENTIST COLLEGE Hills Adventist College recently held their Week of Worship (WoW), with the student body getting involved in serving throughout the week. Pastor Phil Yates is grateful that the week has had such a powerful impact on students, saying: “We’ve had an enormous week, with 60 students involved in a variety of ways, from the music team, to AV, to stagehands; and our speaker, Eddie, really connected with the students through his story. Today we saw a lot of students give their hearts to God, making a decision, and a lot of students requesting Bible study.” The theme for Week of Worship was ‘Jesus Is”, and was presented by Pastor Eddie Hypolite, who kept students engaged. Eddie also informed and encouraged students while talking about life choices, and there were a variety of one-on-one topics covered, such as ‘Jesus is Us’, ‘Jesus is Radical’, ‘Jesus is Truth’ and ‘Jesus is Love’. During the altar call, all of the Year 5 and 6 students came forward, alongside a few senior students. A variety of special items were sung, and the week included a special Pancake Crew breakfast for middle and senior students, which was a big hit.
HURSTVILLE ADVENTIST SCHOOL In anticipation of Mother’s Day, Hurstville Adventist held its own special Spa Day for mothers and caregivers within the school community. Each class organised nail and facial spas and a drawing competition for students to take part in. There was lots of fun to be had with Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform that engaged parents and Year 5 and 6 students. Special items were performed throughout the day, including poems that were written and read by students. The day concluded with packed picnic lunches.
