united we shine

FESTIVAL PROGRAM

18 February - 6 March 2022

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, who are the traditional owners of the land on which our celebrations are held on. We pay our respects to elders past and present and extend that respect to other First Nations peoples. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. Looking towards 2022, the future for our rainbow family is brighter than it has ever been. But this doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges for us along the way - of particular concern both at home and abroad are the attacks on our Trans and Gender Diverse communities. Our theme UNITED WE SHINE signifies that when we band together, we shine brighter. It is a rallying call to stand up against hate and inequality, reminding us that when we rise as a collective, our message of love and inclusion is heard louder. We only need to look at our history to be empowered by the strength and resilience of LGBTQIA+ people - we have the power to create a more equitable society. Now is the time for us to unite. This is our time to shine.

Co-Chair’s Welcome

CEO’s Welcome

Creative Director’s Welcome

There’s nothing like a Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival to shake off those lockdown blues. Season 2022 can’t come soon enough!

What a ride the past two years have been. At moments, it felt like time had stopped… and yet here we are again, racing towards another Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.

I was two-years-old when a brave group took to Sydney’s streets in 1978, protesting for LGBTQIA+ rights. This was a time when homosexuality was illegal, discrimination was sanctioned and being ‘out’ was dangerous for many.

Now is the time to come together because… UNITED WE SHINE! After having spent so much time apart from each other over the past two years, and for many in total isolation, the theme for this year’s Festival – UNITED WE SHINE - reminds us of the power, importance and beauty of community. There is no doubt that Oxford Street is the heart and home of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the Parade. Although COVID and evolving Health Orders kept us from the street for another year, and many of us are feeling homesick, we are looking forward to bringing the Parade back to Oxford Street in 2023 for Sydney WorldPride! Even so, we are once again proud to be able to offer two free tickets to the Parade for all our members, four free tickets to 78ers and 3000 free tickets to those experiencing hardship. Importantly, this year’s Festival comes at a critical time in our community’s history as the Federal government’s Religious Discrimination Bill threatens to wind back hard-fought anti-discrimination protections against our communities. This is unacceptable. We know that when our LGBTQIA+ communities unite, when we have difficult conversations and share our truth with the world, we can push out the darkness and bring love, freedom, and equality to the world. We make the world shine, not just through glitter and sequins, but by being who we are unashamedly and united as a community. Shine on you gorgeous diamonds! With infinite love, and in solidarity, Jesse and Mel CO-CHAIRS, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

2

If there’s one thing this pandemic has taught us, it’s just how important connection and community is. Our LGBTQIA+ communities are diverse and unique, but when we come together, our shared voice is louder and our reach is felt wider. Although COVID-19 has negatively impacted us all, we look ahead with optimism and need little reminder of just how resilient our communities are. This strength has inspired our season theme, UNITED WE SHINE. I couldn’t be prouder to present the 2022 Festival, which sees the return of many of our communities’ beloved events including all-day rainbow extravaganza Fair Day and our iconic closing party, Laneway. Some Festival favourites have been reimagined, such as Paradiso Pool Party and Kaftana Pool Party, while Party returns to its roots with pop-up performances anytime, anywhere. Our world-renowned Parade will once again light up Sydney Cricket Ground in a celebration of pride, identity, self-expression and protest. For those who cannot join us in person, find a viewing party in your area or tune in at home, as it will be broadcast around the country on ABC. It’s with immense gratitude I must thank the SGLMG staff and board, who have tirelessly navigated every obstacle thrown at us with resolve, finding creative solutions to ensure we could deliver this Festival. I also thank you, our Mardi Gras community, for standing by us and supporting us in these uncertain times with the understanding that although things still look a little different, we are stronger together and UNITED WE SHINE.

It’s thanks to their courage, and others who came together before me, that many in our community are now able to live and love freely, honestly and with dignity. For this, I am forever grateful. However, there is still more to do for our LGBTQIA+ community. While the glittering celebration that is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has evolved since that initial 1978 protest, for me it is still about bringing our community together, amplifying our voice and providing a platform for positivity and change. All of this inspired this years’ Festival theme UNITED WE SHINE. Seemingly against all odds, and thanks to the hard work of many, I’m delighted that in 2022 our community will once again unite and shine bright across a packed Festival season of celebration, discussion and self-expression. I invite you to explore our bursting line-up of new and familiar events, many of which we’re working hard to bring back in an even bigger way. I encourage you to connect with your community, embrace their talent, diversity and stories. And, I urge you to continue the SGLMG legacy by standing together for those in our LGBTQIA+ community still at risk of harm and discrimination. This is our time to shine. Let’s make it brighter than ever in 2022. Happy Mardi Gras! Travis Conneeley CREATIVE DIRECTOR, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Happy Mardi Gras! Albert Kruger CEO, Mardi Gras Arts

Premier’s Welcome

Minister’s Welcome

Lord Mayor’s Welcome

On behalf of the NSW Government, I’m delighted to welcome everyone to Sydney for the 2022 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

After two years marked in many ways by division, separation and a polarising of peoples, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is a wonderful, welcome reminder of the power of inclusion, equality and diversity.

Over the last four decades, this event has grown to become a truly international spectacle that showcases the very best of what our state can be.

The NSW government is proud to continue its support of the event, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.

It draws hundreds of thousands of people to our great city and boosts the economy, particularly for those tourism businesses that have faced the toughest challenges during the pandemic.

Mardi Gras is a celebration of pride, diversity and inclusion in NSW, and I am delighted to see it become one of the largest and most successful LGBTQIA+ events in the world, putting a spotlight on Sydney as a welcoming and inclusive destination.

It’s also important to congratulate the organisers who have overcome their own challenges over the past two years, as they prepare to bring this spectacular event to life.

The festival is one of the most important events on the Sydney and NSW major events calendar, providing a significant boost to the state’s visitor economy each year.

It is that spirit that will make this year’s event all the more special.

This year’s festival program is packed with events, performances and community activities to create a world class event which aligns with the NSW Government’s commitment to making every visitor’s time here unforgettable.

I wish everyone a happy and safe Sydney Mardi Gras, now and into the future. Dominic Perrottet Premier NSW

Enjoy the celebrations and I wish you a happy Mardi Gras! Hon. Stuart Ayres MP MINISTER FOR TOURISM

These are qualities celebrated by the City of Sydney, and why we proudly support every year this unique community Festival – which remains one of the most anticipated events on the Sydney calendar. We’re very proud to do so again in 2022. This year’s theme, UNITED WE SHINE, reminds us of the resilience of our LGBTQIA+ communities, and how working together for what we believe in makes us stronger as a whole. This year, we stand with the Festival against abhorrent attacks on trans and diverse gender communities. 2022 also marks the twelfth year that we’ve proudly flown the rainbow flag over Sydney Town Hall. This is a strong and powerful symbol of our commitment to diversity and a very colourful reminder of the strength, bravery and resilience of our amazing city. Coordinating any event in recent times has been fraught with challenges, and I congratulate the organisers of Mardi Gras for continuing to find new, innovative and COVID-safe ways for us to celebrate together. Wishing you all a safe and happy Mardi Gras! Clover Moore LORD MAYOR OF SYDNEY

It’s time for audiences to get back into the cinema (or On Demand) and explore new LGBTQIA+ stories on screen. Queer Screen is extremely proud to feature a program strand focussing on First Nations people from around the world in MGFF22. The Opening Night film, ‘Wildhood’ is a Canadian coming-of-age in which a rebellious two-spirit teenager runs away from home to find his birth mother and reclaim his Mi’kmaw heritage.

Ma Belle My Beauty

Other festival highlights include, the visually stunning ‘Finlandia’, the female led First Nations episodic ‘Querencia’, Sundance award-winner ‘Ma Belle, My Beauty’, epic gay drama ‘Firebird’ & the incredible ‘No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics’. Closing Night will feature none other than the highly-anticipated adaptation of a seminal novel, ‘B-Boy Blues’. Potts Point Business Partnership presents

the glittering mile The Glittering Mile is where it all began. In 1978 the party that became a protest started on Darlinghurst Road and in 2022 it returns. We’ve come a long way since those days and for two weeks (Thursday 18th February through to Sunday 6th March), Mardi Gras returns to the Cross to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community in camp sophistication and glamour amidst the neon. From bottomless brunches and alfresco dining to cabaret shows and cosy cocktail dens. Retail offerings, history talks and walks or live music, viewing parties and art exhibitions, in 2022 all that glitters will be gold. There’s so much to do on The Glittering Mile this Mardi Gras, so come join the party. Kick off on Thursday 17th February at ‘Shop Late’ as you stroll the neighbourhood and check out the local style stakes - start with a shopping expedition and finish with a cocktail, a quick snack, or a 5-star meal. Over the next two weeks take in some art, find a new favourite bar or come to a show. On the night of the Parade, Mardi Gras viewing parties will be at different venues, with fun hostessing and some performances as the Parade goes on - it’s next best thing to being there!

QUEER CONTEMPORARY:

FREE

I want a future that lives up to my past Curated by Dr Liz Bradshaw to coincide with the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, this exhibition brings together a range of distinct LGBTQIA+ voices from within the National Art Schoolcommunity, including teaching staff and alumni. It presents works in dialogue about the nature of contemporary art and politics and possible personal, local and global futures through queer visual languages and points of view. I want a future that lives up to my past juxtaposes artists and works to make visible queer aesthetics that are not tied to obvious representations of identity and sexuality, but are materially grounded in the ways LGBTQIA+ lived experience and creative practice demands a range of navigations and interventions in mainstream cultural forms and interpretations. Against the global backdrop of the climate crisis, our second pandemic, and the last decade’s conservative backlash against the human rights of those of us who live in the margins, the works included offer subtle and complex articulations of ideas, images and forms that bridge difficult pasts and possible futures.

#mardigras2022

A Message From Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras regarding Party 2022: It’s with very heavy hearts we must advise that Party will no longer take place in 2022. The team at Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has worked tirelessly with NSW Health, the state government and venues at all stages of planning for our entire Festival, however Party is not operable under the state’s Public Health Order. This phase of the pandemic remains volatile, and the health and safety of our community will always remain our top priority. The nature of this event being mostly indoors with dancing, plus with an attendance of more than 10,000 people means it is high risk for COVID transmission. Due to Party’s large scale, sadly we have had to make the very tough call several weeks before March 5th, not only for the sustainability of the event in future years but also for the organisation, and so that artists and party-goers can make alternate plans. There will be other opportunities for us to come together this Mardi Gras Festival. Most of our events are outdoor and/or seated, meaning they fit under the Health Order and are deemed lower risk. We have approved COVID-Safe plans and procedures in place to ensure other key events, including Fair Day and Parade, can still go ahead as planned. We will continue working with NSW Health to ensure that all the remaining exciting Festival events fall within current COVID safety guidelines.

Ticket-holders to Party, refunds will automatically be processed via Ticketek. You can expect your funds to be returned to your account within 7-10 business days.

If you’d like to donate a portion of your ticket value to Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, you will help us offset the losses relating to this year’s Party and see that our organisation can continue to bring community events for years to come. All donations over $2 are tax deductible: mardigras.org.au/support-us

We hope you will join us at the many other fantastic Mardi Gras events happening this season. Stay tuned for exciting lineup announcements via our online channels, plus the long-awaited return of an iconic October party later this year.

Hello Sydney Loulou Bistro, Boulangerie and Traiteur

C

Welcome to Sydney and the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival. Beyond the glittering parade of diversity, parties, exhibitions and films, the incredible harbour city is waiting to be explored. Feel adventurous on breezy coastal trails and ocean pool dips. Embrace a sense of belonging in neighbourhood bars and glittering dancefloors. Feel the joy of rejuvenation in luxury hotels and world-class salons. Here’s our insider’s guide:

Awe-inspiring dining Modern Australian Acclaimed chef Neil Perry’s first solo venture, Margaret, is a splendid neighbourhood dining room located in Double Bay, dedicated to his late mother Margaret’s sense of generosity. The sharing menu unites people over wood-fired meats, fine wine and fresh seafood. In Paddington, Ursula’s inhabits the historic terrace that once housed local favourite Darcy’s, where inventive chef Phil Wood fuses old and new with skilful innovation. Loulou Bistro, Boulangerie and Traiteur

E

Mexican Fonda in Surry Hills serves simple, fresh Mexican in a joyful space with cosy blue banquettes, peachy walls and plenty of greenery. Over at Barangaroo, colourful cantina, Tequila Daisy, has a sunlit terrace overlooking Wulugul Walk where guests tuck into tacos and tequila.

Asian Inside the ivy Precinct in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, MuMu promises playful nights of fresh cocktails and tasty South East Asian street food. Start with the wok-flashed king prawns, a yuzu slushee, then dance the night away at the ivy Pool Club. In South Eveleigh, Kylie Kwong’s casual Cantonese eatery Lucky Kwong boasts bold Asian dishes, celebrating incredible local produce and ingredients such as tofu from Boon Luck Farm, located on the Far North Coast of NSW, and local bush mint from Jiwah native rooftop garden. For modern Japanese, Bay Nine Omakase at the chic Campbell’s Cove precinct is an intimate dining experience, face-to-face with acclaimed chef Tomohiro Marshall Oguro at a 10-seater bar.

Italian Popular trattoria Totti’s Rozelle, nestled in Sydney’s Inner West, serves up the same famous woodfired puffy bread to mop up your burrata and antipasto as at their Bondi and CBD outposts. At Lola’s Bondi, Italian, Spanish and Australian wines take centre stage inside this bold beachside haven, while the menu has a classic Mediterranean slant. Margaret

H

French Nestled in picturesque Lavender Bay, Loulou Bistro oozes simple elegance and offers Parisian favourites, while the adjoining Boulangerie and Traiteur have a delicious array of flaky croissants, fresh-baked bread, fromage and top-notch wines for a harbourside picnic. Porcine in Paddington is an inviting French eatery above a bottleshop with a petite menu of rustic French cuisine.

Find your spirit CBD Take a step back in time to mid-century Hollywood glamour at Dean & Nancy on 22, an elegant bar from the team behind award-winning Maybe Sammy. For a mid-week drink, pull up a seat at Tiny’s for a pre-bottled cocktail or tiny bottle of vodka from their feature wall of minis. If you’re seeking something a little different, pair panoramic views of Sydney from the 83rd floor with glamorous 1970s décor at Bar 83, the city’s highest bar.

Redfern The Redfern is an excellent two-in-one deal: a beautifully restored 120-year-old pub on the bottom level, with exposed brick and timber beams, and a retro bar and restaurant filled with mid-century furniture serving pub classics upstairs. To be transported to the streets of Barcelona, head to Bar La Salut to work your way through snacks like croquetas and cured meats accompanied by vermouth-based aperitifs and a bottle from the extensive Spain-based wine list. In the mood for backyard beers, live music and sunshine? Head to Backyard at The Alex, which has a ‘summer barbecue at a mate’s place’ vibe.

Paddington and Darlinghurst Live music, Australiana décor, local beer, and some very delicious steaks: you can’t go wrong with a night at The Unicorn Hotel on Paddington’s iconic Oxford Street. If you’re enthusiastic about weird and wonderful beer, the nearby Bitter Phew should be top of the list: it’s home to 12 rotating taps pouring hard-to-find beer from all over the world. Looking for a place for a late-night snack? Big Poppa’s also on Oxford Street, is the perfect pitstop for late-night pasta, cheese, wine and hip-hop – open until 3am.

Potts Point Home to Sydney’s iconic Kings Cross strip, Potts Point has long been a place for late nights and high spirits. Keep things classy with wine time at local favourite Dear Sainte Eloise a wine bar inspired by all things wild, organic, new and classic. For cocktails that take you back to another era, Dulcie’s is an underground drinking parlour with a vintage vibe and Australian personality, serving only Aussie wine, spirits and produce.

Hotel Kith Darling Harbour This fuss-free hotel is the brainchild of Singapore-based accommodation brand, MetroResidences. The modern rooms are petite but purposeful spaces with everything you need for a few nights stay in the city. Hotel Kith Darling Harbour is in the heart of Pyrmont, with plenty of eateries and boutiques near the hotel – the Kith team are happy to put together a bespoke list of things to do just for you.

Paramount House Hotel The Surry Hills hotel shares a building with the boutique Golden Age Cinema, excellent café Paramount Coffee Project, wine bar Poly and a rooftop gym and sauna – so you don’t have to go far for a weekend of fun. The décor combines heritage features with tasteful modern updates of concrete, terazzo and timber and champions the neighbourhood with locally made mini-bar snacks and drinks.
