On arrival in Vienna, we travel by private coach to our hotel, the InterContinental Vienna. Conveniently located in the city centre, the hotel overlooks the Stadtpark and has views over St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Kahlenberg. It is ideally placed to discover historic Vienna and it is close to exclusive shopping areas such as Kaerntner Strasse and Graben. The rest of the day is free to rest and relax after the long journey from Australia. If anyone wants some exercise or to explore Vienna, they might like to take a stroll in the Stadtpark, or they might consider visiting spectacular St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Romanesque and Gothic cathedral whose multi-coloured tile roof is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols. DAY 3 | SUNDAY 9 APRIL 2017 2ND OF 4 NIGHTS AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL VIENNA VIENNA In the morning we go on a tour of the beautiful baroque Schoenbrunn Palace. For centuries the property of the Habsburgs, it is still largely in its original condition, from its authentically furnished residential and ceremonial rooms, to the maze and the labyrinth in the gardens. PLEASE NOTE: This morning members of the SYO will be attending the Vienna Philharmonic’s concert at the Musikverein. This concert is for subscribers of the Vienna Philharmonic and is sold out; however, we have managed to secure standing room tickets for the SYO. If you would like to purchase a standing room ticket for the performance or if you would like to be put on a waiting list for a returned seated ticket please let Elizabeth Hayllar know as soon as possible. If you obtain a ticket you will need to make your own way to the performance. You can either take a taxi, or take an underground train to Karlsplatz, which is a three minute walk from the venue. Following our visit to Schoenbrunn Palace, we will enjoy a delicious lunch of traditional Austrian cuisine. In the late afternoon we will travel by private coach to Wiener Neudorf where we attend the SYO’s first performance of the tour at Festival Hall in Wiener Neudorf. The performance will commence at 6:00pm. Following the concert we return by private coach to the hotel.
DAY 4 | MONDAY 10 APRIL 2017 3RD OF 4 NIGHTS AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL VIENNA VIENNA This morning we attend the SYO’s masterclass with the Vienna Philharmonic. (Please note: the time of the masterclass is still to be confirmed). We will then have lunch at a traditional coffee house in Vienna. Coffee houses have played an important part in shaping Viennese culture. In 2011 the “Viennese Coffee House Culture” was referred to in the “National Agency for the Intangible Cultural Heritage”, a division of UNESCO, as a place “where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill.” Following lunch we will go on a guided tour of the Vienna State Opera House. This is an exceptional institution not just artistically but also in terms of its architecture. In the course of the tour, which includes the public areas and the stage, visitors hear about the building’s architecture and the opera’s history. The late afternoon is free. In the evening, together with the SYO, we attend a ballet performance of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Vienna State Opera House. DAY 5 | TUESDAY 11 APRIL 2017 4TH OF 4 NIGHTS AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL VIENNA DAY TRIP TO EISENSTADT Today we take a day trip out of Vienna and travel by private coach to the city of Eisenstadt where we attend the SYO’s morning performance in Haydn’s Hall, in the majestic baroque Esterházy Palace. (Please note: this concert will be firmly confirmed in February 2017). Haydn worked as conductor for the Esterházy court for more than 40 years and Haydn’s Hall, where the SYO is performing, is one of the most beautiful and acoustically perfect concert halls of the world. Following the performance there is time allowed to explore the palace. Before returning to Vienna we visit the Bergkirche where we see Haydn’s tomb, the Baroque décor with the trompe d’oeil ceilings and the actual organ that was played by both Haydn and Beethoven. We return by private coach to our hotel. DAY 6 | WEDNESDAY 12 APRIL 2017 1ST OF 3 NIGHTS IN BUDAPEST BUDAPEST This morning we travel by private coach to Budapest. On arrival in Budapest we check into our centrally located hotel. The afternoon is free. You might consider exploring Budapest’s Great Market Hall, situated at the Pest side of the Danube, near Szabadság Bridge. The beautiful three-storey Great Market Hall, which provides a fascinating and picturesque combination of shopping and sightseeing, is one of Budapest’s top attractions. If there is time you can stroll down Fashion Street, Váci utca, which has been a fashionable shopping street since the end of the 18th century and, being directly opposite the market, is within easy reach. In the early evening there is the option to travel to the Budapest Festival Orchestra’s rehearsal venue in Obuda and attend the final hour of the SYO’s masterclass with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. This is an exciting opportunity to witness a masterclass given by a musician from an orchestra ranked by Gramophone magazine as one of the world’s top ten orchestras. Following the masterclass we return by private coach to our hotel.
DAY 7 | THURSDAY 13 APRIL 2017 2ND OF 3 NIGHTS IN BUDAPEST BUDAPEST This morning we visit the Buda Castle and palace complex. Once the domain of Hungarian kings, it is now a fascinating mélange of history and architecture from the mediaeval to the baroque, which dominates the city skyline. We have a guided tour of the gothic-style St. Matthias Church, and experience panoramic views over the Danube and the Pest side of the city from Fisherman’s Bastion, which was built as a lookout tower in the 19th-century. In the early afternoon we will travel to the Royal Palace Gödöllő, which is located east of Budapest. This magnificently restored building is the largest baroque palace in Hungary and the second largest in the world after Versailles. We will take a guided tour of the Palace’s Museum and then join the SYO for a light meal prior to attending the SYO’s performance in the Palace’s spacious and elegantly renovated Riding Hall. Following the performance we return by private coach to the hotel. DAY 8 | FRIDAY 14 APRIL 2017 – GOOD FRIDAY 3RD OF 3 NIGHTS IN BUDAPEST BUDAPEST This morning we have a rare opportunity to sit in on a closed rehearsal of the magnificent Budapest Festival Orchestra. We will join the SYO for one hour of the rehearsal. We will then travel to Széchenyi Thermal Baths. The ancient Romans enjoyed the thermal springs in Budapest as did the Turkish occupiers who built many of the famous Turkish Baths there. Continuing this long tradition of enjoying the region’s hot springs, Szechenyi Thermal Baths, housed in a spectacular Neo-baroque palace, opened at the end of the 19th-century. With 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor baths this venue is the most visited and praised attraction in Budapest. We return by private coach to our hotel and the afternoon is free. In the early evening we enjoy a dinner of traditional Hungarian cuisine. We then attend, along with the SYO, a performance by the Budapest Festival Orchestra in the Great Hall at the magnificent, recently restored Liszt Academy. Programme: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Symphony No. 36 in C major “Linz”, K. 425 Arthur Honegger Chamber Concerto for Flute, English Horn, and Strings Robert Schumann Symphony No. 1 in B flat major “Spring”, Op. 38 Budapest Festival Orchestra Conductor: Victor Aviat Flute: Erika Sebok English horn: Clément Noël Following the performance we return to our hotel.

The late afternoon and evening of Easter Sunday are free. Today many of the shops in the Old Town may be closed, but in consideration of the many people attending the Salzburg Easter Festival there is sure to be some activity in the Old Town. Bearing in mind the travelling before and after our time in Salzburg some might like to rest this afternoon or take a stroll through the Mirabelle Gardens and Maze. However, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, over 900 years old, which dominates and decorates the skyline of Salzburg, will be open and it is worth a visit. It can be easily reached on foot using the path up the mountain or by furnicular. The exterior of the fortress is dramatic and picturesque, and offers panoramic views of Salzburg. The interior, furnished with magnificent gothic carvings, ornamental paintings and frescos, is also remarkable. A wide range of traditional handcrafted items are available, including brightly coloured hand painted Easter eggs. On arrival in Berlin we check into our centrally located hotel. In the late afternoon we go on a short walking tour to visit some of Berlin’s most famous buildings and monuments: Unter den Linden, the most famous boulevard in Berlin; the Holocaust Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe; the 18th-century neoclassical Brandenburg Gate; and the Reichstag. DAY 14 | THURSDAY 20 APRIL 2017 2ND OF 3 NIGHTS IN BERLIN BERLIN This morning we will travel to Museum Island on which there are five world-renowned museums. We will enjoy a guided tour of the Pergamon Museum which holds an incredible collection of classical treasures including the Roman Market Gate of Milet, and the Ishtar Gate with the Processional Way from Babylon. The afternoon is free to explore the capital. You may like to explore one of the other four museums and the Berlin Cathedral, which are also on the island. The Philharmonie is often regarded as having the best acoustics in the world.
Programme: Akademie IV Musiktheater La Tragédie de Carmen, an Adaption of Bizet’s Opera by Peter Brooks and Marius Constant. Conductor: Simon Rössler Scholars from Academy Opera Today and Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker DAY 15 | FRIDAY 21 APRIL 2017 3RD OF 3 NIGHTS IN BERLIN BERLIN This morning we visit Checkpoint Charlie, and the nearby museum, interesting reminders of the harsh period of Berlin’s history during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall, a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989, was constructed by the German Democratic Republic. It cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. It was built to stop emigration from communist East Berlin into free West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point. It became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on 3 October 1990. Following our visit we travel to the Berlin Philharmonie and attend the last hour of the SYO’s masterclass with a member of the Berlin Philharmonic. This is a great privilege as the Berlin Philharmonic has consistently been voted by leading international music critics among the world’s top three orchestras. The masterclass will take place in the Main Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie. In the afternoon we have an early dinner before travelling to Gethsemanekirche for the SYO’s final concert of the tour. The Gethsemanekirche interestingly combines musical performance and political history. It has become famous mostly because of an event in the year 1989, Germany’s ‘Year of Change’. On November 5th, 1989, it was the setting for the State Orchestra’s presentation of Beethoven’s 3rd symphony, when musical director Rolf Reuter shouted “The Wall must go!” to tumultuous applause, which led to a spontaneous demonstration along Schönhauser Allee. Following the performance we will travel to our hotel. DAY 16 | SATURDAY 22 APRIL 2017 TRAVELLING TO DOHA This morning is free to pack or perhaps do some final shopping.
