If an animal could dream, what shape would its nightmare take? Would it be furry, or scaly, or drooly? Or would it be mysteriously devoid of any form? In this picture book, adapted from the Italian original, animals’ nightmares take literal shape, yet the scariest place of all is the Island of Shadows, the domain of extinct creatures whose dreams have disappeared. As the “doctor of nightmares” chillingly explains to the Tasmanian tiger, “once you are gone, there is no coming back.”

Davide Cali is an Italian writer of children’s literature and cartoonist. Originally from Switzerland, he grew up in Italy, where he embarked on a career as a cartoonist. From 1982 to 2008 he collaborated with the monthly magazine “Linus” as a designer and from 1998 he began to publish children’s books. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages and some have been adapted for the theater.

Claudia Palmarucci is an Italian artist and illustrator whose work has appeared in numerous books, including Marie Curie: In the Land of Science, which was awarded the 2020 BolognaRagazzi Award for Nonfiction.
