Nonsense! Book 1
Although he may have wished to be remembered as a more “serious” writer, the 19th-century English poet Edward Lear left an important legacy of limericks to the canon of nonsense verse. One of Lear's most famous five-line poems here receives full illustrative treatment from Swiss-American artist Etienne Delessert, whose work celebrates and seeks to expand the imaginative capacities of children. Intended to set the stage for a forthcoming series of stand-alone poems, Nonsense! Book 1 will whet young readers’ appetites for further adventures in rhyme.
British poet and painter Edward Lear was born on May 12, 1812, and began his career as an artist at age 15. Known for his absurd wit, Lear became popular for his irreverent view of the world which he shared through various poems, songs, and short stories.
Etienne Delessert is a Swiss-American artist and author whose picture books have earned numerous honors, including two Graphics Prizes from the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. In 2010, he was shortlisted for the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration and was nominated again six years later. Among his many children's book credits are Up & Down and It?. He lives in Connecticut.
