LAST FLIGHT

OnApril 24, 1975 the last flight out of Saigon, Vietnam carried over 400 people to the United States, six days before Saigon’s surrender to the North Vietnamese Army.

Kristen Giang was a little girl, on that flight with family, and here in this story she shares all the emotions of the decision to flee from the perspective of someone eight years old; playing a game of space-explorers to protect herself and her sister’s eyes from tear gas; sneaking a stu ed animal into the family’s overstu ed suitcase for comfort.

Dow Phumiruk’s tender illustrations let anyone feel the excitement and the ultimate hopefulness of this amazing true story.

Pan Am promised to fly us out, but not yet. Every day, the booms grew louder.

KRISTEN MAI GIANG is a Chinese American author who immigrated from Vietnam when she was 18-months-old and grew up in San Gabriel, CA. Last Flight tells the story of her family’s escape from Saigon six days before its fall in 1975, on the dramatic last commercial flight out. When not writing, Kristen has spent the past two decades creating Emmy Award-winning digital content for Disney, NBC Kids, and Mattel. She is a proud member of SCBWI and she tweets at @kmgiang. She lives in Los Angeles, CA.

DOW PHUMIRUK is a clinically retired pediatrician who has found her passion in creating children’s books. Dow was born in Krung Thep (Bangkok), Thailand. She is the illustrator of Counting on Katherine, written by Helaine Becker. She now lives in Colorado with her husband of three decades, three artistic daughters and a dog.

Some days, tear gas stung our eyes like chili peppers.

Ma put bags over our heads. We pretended to fly into space. I had seen a picture of a man on the moon. America felt just as far.

ANCIENT NIGHT

At the start of things, the elders say, the universe was hushed and still. The moon alone shone bright and round in the star-speckled dark of the sky.

Ancient Night is a twist on two Nahua traditions: the rabbit which the Feathered Serpent placed on the moon, and the Lord Opossum who ruled the earth when humans were first created, who stole fire from the gods to keep them warm.

David Álvarez is one of the most extraordinary artists working today. His black-and-white illustrations have gained fame in his home country of Mexico and around the world. Here, in Ancient Night (Noche antigua), David displays his immense talent with full-color illustrations for the first time. Award-winning author David Bowles has written a poetic text—and carefully researched backmatter—to accompany David’s lush illustrations and story. Published simultaneously in English and Spanish.

DAVID ÁLVAREZ is a graduate of the School of Design of the National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico (EDINBA) and the winner of numerous international illustration awards. Ancient Night is his first book published in English.

DAVID BOWLES is a Mexican American author and translator from South Texas. Among his multiple award-winning books are Feathered Serpent, Dark Heart of Sky: Myths of Mexico, and They Call Me Güero. His translation of The Sea-Ringed World garnered a Batchelder Honor and was a finalist for the International Latino Book Award. In 2017, David was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters.

The Magnificent Masked Cat

In a puddle of moonlight stood a magnificent cat.

She had nifty black paws.

A long tail with splendid rings.

A mask to hide her identity.

She was an enigma, which is an extra-beautiful mystery.

15 CHAPTER TWO

Love was the weirdest. But it was also wonderful.

He put his paws around Sunny and licked her head the way she liked. “Love you, Sunny,” Cap’n Keith said. “Love you, Frank. Squawk! Good night!”

The Expensive Nature of Love

This is what I found out. The body of the caravan was forty tarpan horses, twenty camels, and twenty pack mules, all carry ing goods first to Turfan, in westernmost China, then to Kashgar. As you know, this is the dangerous leg of the journey that went through the Taklamakan Desert. They had assembled someplace near the Kumul Pass with goods from farther east. This is where they came across the temple and found me in the middle of my... situation.

Once they reached Turfan, they would triple in size—goods, pack animals, traders, and caravaneers—in order to make the trek to Kashgar across those haunted sands. From there, the caravan would break apart. Samir would go on to Samarkand—that was his big plan. From Turfan to Samarkand, capital to capital. Most would trade for western goods at a nice profit and turn back at Kashgar. But Samir wanted his

Ablutions and Pollutions

After Samir traded the coral for some gold, sugarcane syrup, and several sea sponges, we found a neglected tea house in the outskirts of the tent city.

A larger assembly hall had been constructed nearby. It was skirted with hookah smoke and roared with sounds of gamblers throwing knucklebones. Most of the caravaneers were drinking there. Gracus was there. So we were not.

Our little tea house was shabby and quiet. I will describe it for further evidence. The teahouse was established by a grand father from Chang’an who had lost his wife to fever. He had escaped the city that housed her memory by feeding the caravans. He had taken his sons, who had taken their wives, who had borne children, who crawled around on the carpets playing games with the patrons’ toes. When

CONTROL FREAKS

One week. One prize. Eight really weird challenges. Introducing a humorous middle grade debut for fans of Lupe Wong Won’t Dance .

Whatif Louis Sachar’s Wayside School were a little less wacky—but just as funny—and centered on a young Black boy who IS going to be the great inventor of all time, and set in the top STEM middle school in the country, oh and it was written by someone who worked for years in independent schools, and it also tackles what it’s like to live in a blended family and to stand up to a parent who’s not being so great and to truly work together with your peers?

It might look a little like J.E. Thomas’s Control Freaks :) Benjamin Banneker STEM Academy is the top middle school in Denver. Let’s just say the kids are . . . competitive. When Principal Yee announces the start of an epic Team Competition for the school, Frederick Douglass Zezzmer knows that trophy’s got his name on it. That’ll show his sportsobsessed Dad that he’s worthy, right? Only problem is, it’s a TEAM competition . . . and Doug isn’t so great working in a team environment (except with his best friend Huey, of course).

A clever send-up of school—and a genuine portrait of a kid and family—that kids across the country will see themselves and find joy and connection in.

J.E. THOMAS grew up near Colorado’s Front Range mountains. She spent her early summers stu ng grocery bags with books at the local library, reading feverishly, then repeating the process week after week. J.E. has bachelors’ degrees in Mass Communications and Political Science, as well as a master’s degree in Public Communications. She wrote Control Freaks while working as an administrator at the same independent school she attended as child.

PEDRO & DANIEL

Debut historical coming-of-age YA about the unbreakable bond of brotherhood for fans of Erika L. Sanchez and All Boys Aren’t Blue

Pedro and Daniel are Mexican-American brothers growing up in 1970’s Ohio. Their mom doesn’t like that Pedro is a spitting image of their darker-skinned father, that Daniel plays with dolls, that neither of the boys love sports like the other kids in their neighborhood. Life at home can be rough—but the boys have an unshakable bond that will last their entire lives.

Pedro & Daniel is a sweeping and deeply personal novel—illustrated with beautiful linework throughout by Julie Kwon—that spans from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, all the while tracing the lives of two brothers who are there for each other when no one else is. Together the brothers manage an abusive home life, school, coming out, first loves, first jobs, and the AIDS epidemic, in a coming-of-age story unlike any other.

FEDERICO EREBIA is a retired physician, artist, woodworker, and author. His artisanry, woodwork, furniture design, and books have been featured in magazines, newspapers, radio, and television. He is an active member of several writing groups. Pedro & Daniel is his debut novel. He lives in Massachusetts.

A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University, she has worked for a variety of clients in books and animation, including Simon & Schuster, Disney Hyperion, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, and Cartoon Network. THOSE WHO SAW THE SUN

African-American Oral Histories From

the Jim Crow South

The past is not the past. We may think something is ancient history, or something that doesn’t a ect our present day, but we would be wrong.

Those Who Saw the Sun is a collection of oral histories told by Black people who grew up in the South during the time of Jim Crow. Jaha Nailah Avery is a lawyer, scholar, and reporter whose family has roots in North Carolina stretching back over 300 years. These interviews have been a personal passion project for years as she’s traveled across the South meeting with elders and hearing their stories.

One of the most important things a culture can do is preserve history, truthfully. In Those Who Saw the Sun we have the special experience of hearing this history as it was experienced by those who were really there. The opportunity to read their stories, their similarities and di erences, where they agree and disagree, and where they overcame obstacles and found joy—feels truly like a gift. 9781646142446

JAHA NAILAH AVERY is an African American woman and proud Southerner. Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, she received her law degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied constitutional and civil rights law. She spent several years in the startup tech space before embarking on her professional writing career, and her work can be found in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Architectural Digest
