What’s so special about coffee table books?
According to predictions by various experts already published several years ago, no one today should willingly hold a printed book in their hands anymore. Yet, young people, in particular, are clinging to the classic medium, enjoying new book designs with features like colorful edge printing and special foil accents. #BookTok is booming: This subcategory of the social media platform TikTok is making fiction go viral, turning unknown newcomers into popular bestsellers within seconds.
Books are read either to entertain with gripping stories or to further one‘s knowledge in a particular field. When both are combined, it’s referred to as infotainment: A photography book focuses specifically on visual aesthetics, accompanied by supporting text. While the images are captivating and moving, the addition of written content provides the educational input. But is this entertaining and informative character really what makes a good illustrated book so fascinating?
A coffee table book is often too large and bulky for a bookshelf, which means it must be placed prominently on the coffee table. Sounds pretty negative for potential buyers, doesn’t it? Not at all, because that’s precisely the essence of an illustrated book. Paul Harris, a psychology professor at Florida’s Rollins College, puts it this way in Architectural Digest “Identity display is the primary motivation for strategically displaying books.” He also believes that choosing a coffee table book can be compared to selecting a poster or even a tattoo. In both processes, we are looking for something that expresses our personality, interests, or values.
Rather than being viewed purely as a status symbol, the coffee table book is an expression of individuality, artfully showcasing the owner’s interests, mood, and taste. The actual consumption of the content becomes increasingly secondary. This is demonstrated by the current TikTok trend, Bookshelf Wealth, where carefully curated book collections are used to create a cozy atmosphere – and elegantly reveal one’s own character. The vintage car book on the coffee table signals to guests that this home is owned by a true car enthusiast. The photography book on the desk, on the other hand, reveals the potential business partner a shared love for visual arts. In other words, unlike fiction, a picture book is one of the mediums through which we communicate our personal style – not in digital realms, but in real life.
