‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’

he Toledo Jazz Orchestra will present its Cool Yule Annual Holiday Concert on Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Valentine Theatre. The Toledo Jazz Orchestra, known as one of the finest jazz ensembles in the country, has been performing together for the past 35 years.

The group has played with legends of the past and present including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Zoot Sims and Tom Scott.

The band’s annual Holiday Concert will feature holiday music from the bands of Stan Kenton, Rob McConnell, Count Basie

and more. The musical event will also feature music from Swingin' Nutcracker

by Shorty Rogers as well as Toledo's award-winning entertainer Ramona Collins, who will be performing Christmas recordings of Ella Fitzgerald. TJO board President Ann Sanford is excited about the upcoming performance.

“The Nutcracker tunes are immediately recognizable from the iconic ballet but will have your toes tapping to the jazzy upbeat arrangement,” stated Sanford. Special guest trumpeter, John Zappa from the Blue Wisp Band, will also play selections including “Up On The Housetop” and many more.

Walker partners with Sylvania Franciscan After Words author

Recently, Jana Whitmore, director of All Good Things, a gift shop sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis, introduced “After Words,” by Sister Karen Zielinski, to the staff of Walker Funeral Homes. “After Words” is a take-home collection of thoughts, ideas and prayers for people dealing with the loss of a loved one. Produced by Sylvania Franciscan, Sister Karen Zielinski, author and lecturer on chronic disease and coping strategies, this self-help resource includes an eight-page pamphlet on losing a loved one, meditation cards to help deal with the loss, journal starters to collect thoughts and feelings, and Mandalas to color while reflecting on the situation.

Funeral director Ryan Hobbs was charged with reviewing the program and determined

that it would be a help to many of the people he and other Walker staff serve. "We develop a high level of intimacy and a strong bond with those we serve while we are making funeral arrangements," Hobbs noted. "I know that After Words will be a big help to many of them," he said.

“It is certainly wonderful that the staff at Walker perceived the need for this program and want to offer this additional support to those they serve,” Sister Karen reported. " There is something here for everyone.

And, this is a tangible gift, which is also very meaningful to someone experiencing grief," she said.

That sentiment was echoed by Whitmore.

"Walker is the first funeral home in the area to see the value in offering After Words for clients. This is certainly commendable."

According to Hobbs, the staff at Walker maintains strong relationships with families after the funeral is over. Each December, a memorial service is planned for families off those who died during the year. In addition, an ongoing grief support group for adults has become a regular event and is scheduled the second and fourth Wednesday of each by a bereavement month facilitated counselor from Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

“We all feel it is very important to do whatever we can to help those during this very emotional time,” he said.

Sister Karen is the Director of Canticle Studio, a creative office of products which focus on spirituality and health. Her first book, Hope and Help for Living with Illness (Franciscan Media) deals with health and spirituality. According to Sr. Karen, After Words was inspired by another Sylvania Franciscan, Sister Jordan, who serves as a

“She noted there was a void of materials to give to those suffering grief and suggested that I put something together,” Sister Karen recalled. “She was looking for something that could help heal the heart and offer peace for those in a state of grief,” she added.

“Everyone grieves in different ways,” said Sister Karen. “For some it could take a short period of time, for others, it is longer, and for some it doesn’t start until six months after the death of their loved one. So we put

together this packet to help each person move through the grieving process at their own pace and in their own time.”

A New View: Ten-mile Creek River Trail now offers view of river

The sound of a wood chipper and chain saw broke the silence one early morning in November. Six people gathered together, ready to clear the invasive trees, bushes and plants that had infested the creekside behind the Wingate hotel in Sylvania. The River Trail, a bike and walking trail running through Sylvania, was in need of some forestry management. Three members of the Sylvania Tree Commission joined the city of Sylvania forestry staff to remove common buckthorn trees, bush honeysuckle shrubs and grapevines that had taken over the understory of the creekside forest.

“This time of year, just about anything that has green leaves is likely to be invasive,” explained Pat O’Brien, superintendent of Parks and Forestry for the city of Sylvania.

O’Brien pointed out a common buckthorn tree, explaining its identifying features— black or grayish bark, oval leaves and thorns.

Common buckthorn is extremely aggressive and smothers native wildflowers and bushes, robbing them of sunlight and soil nutrients.

In just a short time, buckthorn can take over a forest.

Candy Sarikonda, a member of the Sylvania Tree Commission and a conservation specialist for Monarch Watch, explained why invasive plants are a problem.

“Invasive plants are not native to our area.

And that’s a problem, because our local wildlife depends on the leaves, fruit and seeds of native plants for their food. Our native butterfly and moth caterpillars will not eat buckthorn leaves. Birds eat the buckthorn berries, but the berries are not very nutritious, and birds end up spreading the seeds around the forest as they defecate.

That leads to more buckthorn and less quality habitat for birds to find nesting sites and caterpillars to eat.”

Sarikonda grabbed a pair of loppers, zeroing in on a buckthorn tree. “Baby birds must have caterpillars to eat in the first week of their lives—without that protein source, they will not survive. So, by restoring the balance of nature and removing these invasive plants, we are not only making the creekside beautiful but also restoring the habitat that our birds and butterflies need to thrive.”

Sarikonda cut a buckthorn sapling at the base, while Rick Barricklow followed right behind her and dabbed the stump with herbicide. Barricklow, the city of Sylvania’s former superintendent of Utilities, now serves on the Sylvania Tree Commission.

Experienced in herbicide application, Barricklow is a Wild Ones–Native Plants, Natural Landscapes member and frequently volunteers for The Nature Conservancy. He explained why herbicide was being used.

—by Candy Sarikonda possible to pull them out. Even small saplings can be stubborn, and attempting to pull out these trees might stir up buckthorn seeds that have already fallen, making it easier for them to germinate in spring. We want to disturb the soil as little as possible.”

As Sarikonda and Barricklow worked to remove small saplings of buckthorn, Toni Andrews, Tree Commissioner, used loppers to cut bush honeysuckle growing along the creek. Bush honeysuckle is another invasive, non-native plant that often takes over the forest underneath the taller canopy of trees.

It is a large shrub, and can form dense thickets that smother trillium, wild geranium, wild columbine and many other native wildflowers. Nothing will grow under it. This bush remains green late into fall, and produces red berries, which allow it to spread. Like many other invasive plants, bush honeysuckle was brought to this country and used in home and urban landscaping. But it escaped into nearby forests and preserves, and quickly took over.

And the group was intent on removing it.

The removal project was Andrews’ idea.

“I think it would be great to restore the view of the creek. It is beautiful down here, but you can’t see the creek. The grapevines and honeysuckle have taken over.” The team worked together, cutting and treating stems, then hauling the brush to the nearby wood chipper. When trunks were too wide to be cut using loppers, O’Brien cut them down using a chain saw. Barricklow immediately spot-treated the stumps with herbicide, and the rest of the team hauled the brush to the wood chipper. Margie Ott and Gary Mills carefully fed the brush into the chipper, then

The Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio is looking forward to celebrating its 10th anniversary during the 2016-17 season.

During the formative years the organization has grown from 18 students to as many as 85, gone from one choir to two choirs and has served several hundred students in Northwest Ohio.

They have collaborated with many local professional and semi-professional musicians to produce unique performance opportunities for young singers, all while placing an emphasis on the fun and camaraderie of making music together.

Favorite moments of the last 10 years include collaborations with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Masterworks Chorale, Clarence Smith Community Chorus, Tapestry Harp and Guitar Duo, folk singer and songwriter Kerry Patrick Clark,

the Ohio Northern University Steel Drum Band and national recording artist Kenny Rogers. They have taken music on the road by performing at the Southeast Ohio Children's Choir Festival and the Appalachian Festival of Young Voices.

During its 10th anniversary season the Choir look forward to several performances throughout the Toledo area. They will be singing the National Anthem for the Feb. 12 Walleye game, performing at the Epworth Artist Series at Epworth United Methodist Church with the Clarence Smith Community Chorus at 4 p.m. on March 5 and they will be hosting a 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert at 4 p.m. on April 23 at the Maumee Performing Arts Center.

City to publish calendar for residents

The new Sylvania calendar is in the mail, according to Bill Sanford, city of Sylvania's Economic Development Director, who shepherded the project from inception through completion. “Mayor Craig Stough brought the project to my attention after seeing a city calendar while visiting his daughter in Worthington, Ohio. He brought a copy back and asked if we could do something similar,” Sanford recalled.

Members of city council agreed with the mayor as did several members of the community. Sanford was successful in enlisting four sponsor companies, ProMedica Flower Hospital, Dave White Chevrolet, Republic Services and Reeb, which helped to underwrite the cost of the project.

“It was decided that a city calendar could be a good substitute for the Country Journal, a city publication that has been on the decline,” Sanford pointed out. “We found that we could include all the important information Sylvania residents request including the waste disposal and recycling schedules. In addition, we could include important dates for the year as well as information about local organizations that make the city a great place to live,” he said.

“We also could include Sylvania’s SafetyService Director Kevin Aller’s information he is required to publish four different messages,” Sanford added.

A different Sylvania organization was the focus of each month. January featured Lourdes; February, the Red Bird Arts District; March, the King Road Library; April, biking in the community; May, the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce and its annual car show; June, the Sylvania Community Arts Commission’ s Maple & Main Art Show; July, the Sylvania Farmers Market; August, Olander’s Triathlon; September, Sylvania Recreation and Pacesetter Park; October, Fall Festival; November, the Sylvania Historical Village; and December, Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Miracle on Main.

“Not only were we able to put together an informational piece, we were able to create an attractive tool describing many of Sylvania’s outstanding features pointing out the many benefits of the community,” Sanford related.

Sylvania–Then and Now: 5747 North Main Street

Moving to our next property, you should be standing in front of a business called Harmony in Life at 5747 N. Main Street. This was originally a residential house that was constructed in 1893 while Minnie F. Powers owned the property. She purchased this property in 1868, and there was probably an earlier house on the property. The 1870 and 1880 census records both indicate that Miss Powers was living here on Main Street, which at that time was still being called Division Street. At the 1870 census she was 33 years old and her profession is listed as a milliner, while the 1880 census shows that she was a dress maker. The 1900 census shows that she was still living here and was 61 years old. Minnie Powers never married and when she died Julia A. Stevens was named the executrix of her will, and in 1903 the house was sold to George F. Chandler.

When Chandler purchased this house he was 69 years old and a widow. He was born in England, immigrated to the U.S. in 1854 and was naturalized as a citizen. His son, A.R. Chandler, owned and operated Chandler Hardware in downtown Sylvania. The 1910 census shows George Chandler still living this house, now 76 years old. His occupation was listed as “own income” which usually indicated a person was retired. Living with him was his son Clinton Chandler, 44 years old, single, born in Michigan, occupation - house painter. Also living in the home at this time was George’s sister, listed as H.M. Stiggins, 67 years old, married, born in England, immigrated to the U.S. in 1854 and was naturalized as a citizen. George F. Chandler died in 1913, and in 1914 the family sold the house. Then the following owned this home according to county records: 1914 – Orrin Hollis 1918 – Elva K. Miles 1922 – Horace G. & Susie Moore 1936 – Theresa Moore 1975 – Lionel R. & Coral R. McIlwain 1976 – Hugh J. & Geraldine M. Crossland 1976 – Geraldine M. Crossland 1982 – Richard B. & June K. McIntyre 1987 – Joan B. Ackland 1994 – Karin Sauerlender 2005 – City of Sylvania A 1919 Sanborn Insurance map shows each parcel in the downtown district, with a detailed drawing of the outline of each structure on each parcel. For this parcel the drawing shows this house, an extension off the rear, then an all stone addition that extends right up the south property line. Behind that was

what appears to be a separate small square structure within a few feet of the rear of the home, and a dotted line to indicate a back porch. Further back on the parcel, extending to the rear property line was a garage, and attached to that was a large barn, and behind that was a smaller addition that ran along the west and north corner of the property. Also, near the south property line, there were two outhouses.

At the 1920 census Horace Moore, age 50 years old, and listed working as a foreman at the railroad car barns, was living here with his wife Susie Moore, age 45 years old. Also living here was their son Troy, 22 years old, and working as a chauffeur on a lumber wagon, a daughter Theresa, 25 years old, working as a school teacher, and a son Relmond, age 6 years, attending school.

At the 1930 census the Moore family was still living here. Horace Moore, 60 years old, was listed as a car inspector for the electric railway. His wife Susie was 55 years old, and still living at home was their daughter Theresa E. Moore, 35 years old, single, working as a teacher at the public school, and son Relmond, 16 years old, attending school, and working as a caddy at the golf club.

Susie Moore died in 1934 and her husband Horace died in 1936. At that time the house was transferred to their daughter, Theresa Moore. By the 1940 census Theresa was 45 years old, listed as owning this house and working as an elementary teacher at the public school. Living with her was her brother Relmond, who was 26 years old and working as a locker room assistant at the golf club. Renting a room in the house was Margaret Fairchild, 38 years old, teacher at the public high school.

An April 1957 newspaper article featured a picture of Miss Theresa Moore, retiring after 42 years of teaching in the Sylvania school system. The article said that she began her teaching career at the old Mitchaw School, then later at Hillview, then in the old Main Street school, (next door to her house) and finally at Maplewood school starting in 1929. Theresa lived here until she sold it in 1975, and at that time she moved to the Sunset House on Indian Road in Toledo. She died in 1987 at the age of 92 years old.

The businesses that operated out of this house after 1975 included: 1976 to 1980 - Crossland Furniture and Antiques 1980 to – 1986 - Master Craft Accounting, Micro State film service and Professional Office Service.

Franciscan Care Center Institutes Area’s First Enhanced Inpatient Cardiac Rehab Program

Franciscan Care Center, a CHI Living Community, on Holland-Sylvania Road has implemented an Enhanced Inpatient Cardiac Rehab program. Believed to be the first in the area, the program is under the direction of a board-certified cardiologist and is designed to help improve the well-being of individuals who have experienced an acute cardiac event.

A team approach is used to maximize performance, to achieve optimal independence and to get an individual back to their normal lifestyle in the transition from the hospital to home.

Cardiologist Ahed T. Nahhas, MD, FACC, FSCAI, ABVM and Christina Miller, CNP from The Toledo Clinic Department of Cardiology are working with the Franciscan Care Center Cardiac Rehab Team. One advantage of the program is that Dr. Nahhas and Ms. Miller take time from their office and hospital schedules to see patients right on the Franciscan Care Center campus. “We are coming here to make a difference and to improve cardiac care,” said Dr. Nahhas. According to Dr. Nahhas, he knows of no other program in the area that provides the intense oversite and education that the new Franciscan Care Center Enhanced Inpatient Cardiac Rehab Program provides.

“It’s important after a person experiences an acute cardiac event that the patient and their families implement a healthy lifestyle.

Our Enhanced Inpatient Cardiac Rehab program encourages patients to explore all aspects affecting heart health and get professional support in their recovery as well to help reduce risk factors for future heart problems,” said Jill Schlievert, Administrator of Franciscan Care Center.

The Enhanced Inpatient Cardiac Rehab program is centered on cardiac education, development of an exercise program, heart wholesome meals, healthy lifestyle changes, medication management and home safety.

Cardiac education is provided by licensed nurses, therapy professionals and nurse practitioners on topics that range from healthy lifestyle changes to stress release.

Physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Under the guidance of the cardiac program, residents work with Franciscan Care Center Rehabilitation services on physically improving their health through therapy and an exercise program. Therapists assess and develop an individual’s program based on overall health i.e. high blood pressure or severe heart disease and their physical activity level. They instruct them how to be active at home, at work and during recreation.

Franciscan Care Center’s registered dietitian sets up a heart healthy meal plan while participants are staying at the center. The dietitian also provides assistance in teaching

and training residents how to eat heart healthy when they leave. Education is provided on diet choices, cooking at home and foods to avoid when eating out.

Medication management is an important part of cardiac rehab. The Cardiac Rehab program works with residents to help them learn to safely administer their own medications as well as advise them on what to do should symptoms present themselves. The clinical team also monitors each resident’s meal for any adverse food and drug interaction.

Another unique part of the program is a home evaluation. The evaluation is performed prior to discharge and recommendations are made as to any equipment or home modifications that may be necessary. Education is provided on how to accomplish common household chores with the use of any adaptive equipment, if required. Referrals may also be made for temporary home health services or any further outpatient therapy

services that may be needed at FCC. An important part of the cardiac rehab program is patient education. Discussions range from how to handle stress to facing their personal emotions after a cardiac incident. It helps residents face issues such as quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. It takes into consideration any other correlating health issues a resident may need to consider such as diabetes or being overweight.

“Our goal is that over time the lifestyle changes residents make during their stay at Franciscan Care Center will become routine and encourages them to have an active, healthy lifestyle that helps reduce the risk for future heart disease,” explained Ms. Schlievert.

New techniques featured at local nail spa

Ribbon cut to celebrate Buffalo Wild Wings reopening

After a six-week construction project, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Nov. 30 to celebrate the reopening of Buffalo Wild Wings in the Regency Plaza, 6710 W. Central Ave. According to Director of Operations Jason Irons, 119 seats were added to bring the total to 331 in the enlarged space, which was recently renovated. A total of 67 flat-screen TVs line the walls providing clear views for patrons in every corner of the eatery.

“We have also expanded the kitchen and added a bonus room that can be used for private parties in the adjoining space that had been occupied by a former tenant,” franchise

owner Brad Mangas pointed out. He said the renovated Buffalo Wild Wings now occupies 8,000 square feet in the plaza purchased by Mangas last February.

Mangas, who owns six other Buffalo Wild Wings in northwest Ohio, opened the Central Avenue location in October, 2005.

The franchise, now with 1,200 global locations, is known for its wings and variety of dry seasonings and signature sauces. The menu also includes a selection of seven different burgers and a variety of wraps and sandwiches along with salads, appetizers and desserts.

Sandals' owner Heather Vo, certified since 2009 as a semi-permanent makeup artist recently updated training in microblading and SMP scalp micropigmentation, applies the microblading technique on a client.

Heather Vo, Sandals’ owner for over 13 years, has expanded her skills to include an innovative procedure, microblading, for which she was recently certified.

“This is a relatively new procedure to enhance your eyebrows. Microblading is a way of implanting pigment under the epidermis using a specially designed tiny blade, which leaves thin, realistic hair strokes for the most natural finish. Sparse or missing brows can be completely restored,” she promised. “It is a semi permanent makeup technique that simulates real hair strokes for a more natural look.”

According to Vo, microblading allows clients to change eyebrow shape, improve definition, add color and density to sparse brows and replace brows lost because of chemotherapy or other medical conditions.

The procedure is split into three appointments, four to six weeks apart. The initial appointment takes between 60 and 90 minutes and the second and third average 30 to 60 minutes each.

Once a client makes the decision to proceed, the client and Vo work together to choose the color and the shape to select the best match for skin tone, features and personal preference. Vo also takes measurements to check symmetry and placement.

Vo also became certified in the SMP (scalp micropigmentation) procedure, a modern hair loss treatment for men. “This procedure repli-

cates real shaven hair follicles on the scalp. The look is so realistic that you and everybody else actually believes you have real hair,” Vo promised. “Few results are as immediate, permanent, realistic, hassle-free, non-invasive and cost-effective as the SMP technique.”

Sandals, located at 7607 Sylvania Ave. in the Timberstone Plaza, is Vo’s fifth business startup. “I grew up in the nail business watching my mother operate her own nail salons in California after we immigrated from Vietnam,” Vo said.

“Nail salons were very popular in California but were just getting underway in Ohio. I decided to move here to be part of a growing business,” she added.

She opened her first nail salon in St. Mary, Ohio, which she later sold. Then she moved to the Dayton area, and later Lima and VanWert, opening other salons as she moved north.

Once she moved to Sylvania, she decided this was where she wanted to stay. She started yet another nail salon in a small space, which has now grown to incorporate 3,200 square feet of space to accommodate the 30-member staff.

“We have 16 pedicure chairs and 20 manicure stations now,” Vo said.

The spa can do lash extensions and has three estheticians as part of its extensive staff. In addition, the salon has space for a wide range of parties including birthdays, weddings, showers, and girls night out events.

Renovation of Saxon Square nears completion The $300,000 construction project to renovate the Saxon Square facade that began in the summer, is nearing completion, according to Steve Speranza, president of Tolson Enterprises, the shopping center owner.

"We have redone the parking lot, re-roofed the building and restructured the building facade," Speranza pointed out. "Mike DeVolder, Tolson’s director of construction, found a low maintenance, metal, panel-type product that is almost identical to the former shake shingle roofing material that gave Saxon Square its signature look," he noted. "Then, thanks to our architect, Jeff Normand, the roofline was reconfigured to provide more visibility for tenant signage," he said. "Before the renova-

tion,their signs were under the 'eyebrow' of the shake shingle roof. Now, that problem has been eliminated, providing our tenants much greater exposure for their signs, which are all channel illuminated and more uniform than they were before," he said. "We will finish the project next year with new landscaping," he added.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add cranberries, stirring to combine.

In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, butter, milk and sour cream. Add egg mixture to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. (Batter will be lumpy; do not over mix.) Evenly divide batter among muffin cups. Evenly divide topping over the batter. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes.

Cinnamon French Toast Casserole

In a large bowl, toss together the bread cubes, the caramelized onion, spinach, ham and cheese. Transfer to a 4-quart baking dish. In a bowl, beat together the eggs, half-and-half, the 1 teaspoon salt and pepper, to taste. Pour over bread mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 16 hours.

Preheat an oven to 350 F. Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish and cover with a lid or aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and continue baking until the top is browned and the strata is cooked through, 40 to 50 minutes more.

Cinnamon French Toast Casserole Serves 9 16-ounce loaf cinnamon swirl bread, cubed 6 eggs 1 ¾ cups milk 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ cup unsalted butter ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup chopped pecans Maple syrup Coat a 9" x 13" baking dish with cooking spray, and add the bread cubes. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, nutmeg and salt.

Pour the mixture over the cubed bread, pressing the bread down gently so it absorbs the egg mixture.

In a small saucepan, melt butter and whisk in brown sugar until melted. Add in pecans and pour over bread.

Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes with foil on. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes.

Serve with warm maple syrup.

Savvy Sylvania ...Visits with a local culinary legend

I recently had the chance to visit with Juan Nanez of Sautter’s Market in Sylvania, located at 5519 Main St. Before our visit, a few individuals told me that the native Venezuelan could be a tad difficult to understand. Obviously, these people were not fellow “foodies.” People who are passionate about food share a common language. Within minutes of being in Chef Juan’s presence, his love of food, people, family and his “art” were easily expressed.

My kids and I have been enjoying his culinary creations since his days as owner of Juan’s Fine Pastries. I read the parenting books. I know it’s not wise to bribe your children with food. That being said, I honestly believe my children’s outstanding report cards from Sylvania Schools were boosted by academic celebrations that included Chef Juan’s chocolate Buckeyes, famous breads and fruit tarts. I was sad when his business closed, but I was thrilled when I found him creating his gourmet goodies at Sautter’s.

Although he no longer bakes bread, he now offers everything from mouth-watering entrees to unforgettable desserts. “I now

focus on seasonal food more than anything.

We always have salmon, which must be eaten fresh, dinner items and of course desserts.”

The day I visited, the glass case was filled with his beautiful, culinary treasures that looked like a work of art. There was salmon with pomegranate and squash with lemon, orange vinaigrette, mango salsa, paella and a meatloaf that was anything but ordinary. My mom used to describe her meatloaf as “not pretty but it gets the job done.” Chef Juan took meatloaf to a whole new level. His was stuffed with boiled eggs, asparagus and roasted bell peppers–colorful and tasty.

I asked him about his childhood in Venezuela and his face lit up. “Food was everything,” he recalled. “Mom cooked daily and dad cooked for fun. We never bought anything pre-made. Food is tradition. Food is happiness. I like to see people happy. I come from a poor country where I have seen little kids eat out of the garbage bins. I think this is why I have been known to take people in for dinner. I appreciate people and food and its beauty.”

I also learned that the chef has a few hidden talents and a secret vice. “I do oil paintings, I love it, and I shouldn’t tell you this, but my secret pleasure is to eat Oreo cookies,” he shared. I once ate three of his

children and is proud of their accomplishments. In the future, he plans to continue creating at Sautter’s where he has established relationships with his clientele.

“People come back to the store with memories of their parents buying my challah bread every Friday. It is all about the relationships in life and enjoying what you do. When you have passion and enjoy what you do, it makes people happy. That is what is it all about.”

Cutting Edge Theatre classes

The Savvy Sylvanian's meatloaf can be compared to the Ohio State football season; not pretty but it got the job done. Chef Juan's unique take on the classic dish is as visually pleasing as it is tasty.

Moms, here is a great opportunity to build confidence and foster creativity in your preschooler. Through creative play children are able to widen their scope of the world and express their talents. Student-centered activities, games and songs give them opportunities to voice their ideas and have a ton of fun. Each class is limited to 12 participants for eight weeks. At the end of the class, our young actors will share some of their work for family and friends to enjoy.

Last year, Summit Street was filled with lights to celebrate the holidays.

Last Christmas Eve, parts of Summit and Orchard streets and Colonial Court were illuminated by the glow of candlelight thanks to the suggestion by Lara Clemens and her husband, Josh Angel.

The couple, who live on the north end of Summit Street, saw the effects of a neighborhood of luminaries when visiting her sister

“We thought this would be a wonderful tradition to start in our neighborhood in downtown Sylvania,” she said. “Luminaries make the neighborhood look beautiful and help to foster a greater sense of community in celebration of this wonderful season.

Neighbors can bundle up and stroll through the neighborhood, wishing each other a Merry Christmas.”

“Our neighbors were very cooperative and last year the street looked beautiful. This year, we anticipate extending luminaries to Monroe Street and down Erie Street to Main Street,” she explained. “Who knows, maybe someday we will be able to light all of downtown Sylvania.”

This year, luminaries will be lit on Sunday, Dec. 18. Clemens suggests participants fill white paper lunch bags or empty gallon milk jugs with a small amount of sand or kitty litter to secure the luminary and light a votive candle.

The Toledo area public got behind the Zoo and voted it the best.

The Toledo Zoo’s Lights Before Christmas presented by KeyBank has been voted Best Zoo Lights by USA Today’s 10Best Readers' Choice online public voting contest. Toledo Zoo competed against 20 other zoos, including regional competition from Detroit Zoo who placed second and Indianapolis Zoo that placed fourth.

In 2014, the Toledo Zoo was also named #1 Zoo in America by the same organization.

“We are extremely thankful for the outpouring of support from Zoo friends here and abroad that helped us win this contest. We could not have done it without all of our supporters voting every day and encouraging oth-

Christmas in Toledo without Nigel Burgoine’s Ballet Theatre of Toledo’s Nutcracker would be similar to waking up on Christmas morning and finding no tree or presents! This, together with the setting of the wonderful Valentine Theatre, with its plush Christmassy red seats, transports the viewer to another time and another world, something that no other venue or production in Toledo can give at this time of the year.

Even the audience seems to exude “Christmas” adding to the pre-curtain-up excitement for this definitely family event, with every little girl looking their prettiest and every little boy scrubbed up to his presentable best to match the wonderful costuming of the principals and cast in this, the twelfth season

And yet it is not the “same old same old” as so many beloved traditions can become. The freshness and sparkle continues as new routines are introduced and traditional ones refined or given a new perspective to the delight of the audience. Of the production itself once again the sheer discipline of the corp-de-ballet, the backbone of any ballet company, shines through, with every member obviously enjoying the thrill of dancing to a full house.

Added to the always effective staging was a new scrim for the font of curtain action. The strength of the Company lies in the high standard it maintains. The professional guest artists in no way outshone the company dancers but rather inspired them to reach even greater heights.

Besides the wonderful simpatico and technical perfection exhibited between guest artists and Dawnell Dryja and Christian Griggs-Drane, both with the Grand Rapid Ballet, the Company’s own principals showed an expertise that many professional ballet companies would gladly accept as the standard required.

Particularly obvious in the Spanish Dance was the vibrant energy of Jacqueline Weaner and Larissa Huffman. The elegant extension of Fiona Connolly supported by a confident Mason Bassett highlighted the technical accomplishment that the Company has achieved. Hannah Pruiett added a strong interpretation to the Chinese Dance. The Mirlitons shone in their glamorous tutus and Mackenzie Abodelly displayed very strong technique in her demanding fouette turns.

This discipline and technical ability was

particularly obvious in the Dance of Flowers with Regan Simon as Queen of the Flowers and the Corp de ballet of “flowers” in perfect unison throughout and all thoroughly enjoying the wonderful music of Tchaikovsky. Now in his fourth year at BTT young Evan Long as Fritz allowed not only his technical ability to show but also his infectious personality.

And at the Sunday performance (Sydney Kutcher) was a believable and dreamy-like Clara. Coupled with the success of this production of course was the orchestra, under Lloyd Butler, which provided just the right support and depth – making it as much part of the performance as the dancers themselves.

It was fitting that Toledo\s leading choral group, Masterworks Chorale, should provide the choral accompaniment for this very professional company Coupled with the experience of Richard Helldobler, (has there ever been a better Drosselmeyer?) and James Norman – so wellknown to Toledo audiences and of course Anne Marie Getz and you have a strong and very experienced cast from which to build, and Nigel Burgoine used this to perfection.

Overall, one comes away from such a performance with a tremendous hope and optimism for the youth of today. All that the art of the ballet requires – discipline, the teamwork and cohesion needed, and the hours of training and rehearsal, well and truly showed in this year’s performance of Ballet Theatre of Toledo’s Nutcracker.

Lourdes University MBA students set for Dubai immersion Dr. Patricia O’Connell, Lourdes University College of Business and Leadership professor, will travel on a global immersion tour with 13 students enrolled in the Master of Business Administration degree program to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. During the eight-day immersion, students will tour and meet with business executives as well as experience the region’s culture and traditions.

Sylvania residents Xavien Cohen and Haley MacRitchie are two of the MBA candidates who will depart Jan. 1 and return Jan. 9.

This marks the seventh international immersion for MBA and Master of Organizational Leadership students. To date, the graduate program has offered immersions on four continents. Previous graduate cohorts have studied business, economy and culture in Brazil, China, England, Italy and South Africa.

MBA student Monica Morales has arranged a corporate connection with inter-

national colleagues. The Inside Sales specialist at Schindler Elevator in Holland, Ohio, worked with management to arrange a group tour for herself and fellow MBA candidates at the company’s headquarters in Dubai. In addition, Ms. Morales is excited to travel internationally for the first time and to meet and interact with other businesswomen. “It is my understanding that in Dubai, business women are quite accomplished and respected. The immersion offers me the opportunity to learn more firsthand and to see how other cultures conduct business overall,” said Ms. Morales.

Fellow MBA student Gregory O’Shea works as a quality intern at Pilkington North America, Inc. In that position, he regularly collaborates with engineers and supervisors in the U.S. and the United Kingdom to perform quality testing on production samples, maintain laboratory hardware and software, and generate regular quality reports.

The Dubai experience is even more special

to MBA student Jonathan Farrell who has never flown. Owner of JF Landscaping, he currently serves as a marketing assistant intern and project manager at Interface Performance Materials, Inc. In this role, he works directly alongside the executive salesleadership team handling sales projections, marketing communications and market expansion projects. “In our MBA program, we’ve learned that Dubai has a specific business culture. It is more laidback with less hierarchy and a mutual respect for everyone,” adds Mr. Farrell.

Many of the MBA students are excited to view all of Dubai’s architecture – from ultramodern, to minimalist and classic design.

This hub of the modern Middle East offers an eclectic landscape. In preparation for the immersion, Mr. Farrell, Ms. Morales and Mr. O’Shea have created a logo, and are planning to record and share the experience through blog posts, social media updates and photo and video uploads.

My name is Ella Archer, and I am a fourth grader at Sylvan Elementary School. I’d like to tell you about a fundraiser that our second grade teacher Mrs. Lisa Ward decided to get our school involved with called “Bring the Change.” Our school participated Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, and the goal was to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The LLS “Bring the Change” program is a coin drive and spirit week to help blood cancer patients and their families. The money that we raised helps the LLS support its mission of finding cures and ensures access to treatment for blood cancer.

This event had themed days of the week where you would wear specific clothes and bring in different types of money. For example Monday was pajama penny day, Tuesday was neon nickels day, and Wednesday was dazzling dimes day. On Friday, for team up

for Leukemia day, I wore a team jersey for the Korea soccer team where my cousin was adopted from and brought in dollar bills.

Sylvan was able to raise at $109 in bills. So many coins were collected that the bank is still counting them. I think it’s pretty cool that my friends and I got to team up and find loose change around the house to help find a cure for blood cancer.

Ready for winter

With leaf collection winding down, city of Sylvania street division crews are now focusing on roadway snow and ice removal. They are removing the leaf boxes from the Craig Stough trucks and installing snowplows, salt spreaders, brine tanks and spreaders for the coming winter season.

Snow and ice removal is a big job in the city of Sylvania with over 73 miles of roadway to keep clear. During last winter, city of Sylvania workers spent 598 hours, spread 743 tons of road salt and used 31,237 gallons of brine to

Zoning Approved

A 64-bed facility for people suffering from memory loss and other issues related to dementia has received approval from the Sylvania Township board of zoning appeals for a special use permit to establish the facility on Sylvania Ave., west of McCord Road. Most of the property is vacant, although a house at 6805 Sylvania Ave. will be taken down as part of the project. The eastern border of the facility's property is about 500 ft. west of McCord Road.

Two residents who live west of the proposed care facility said they had no objection to the project, although they were concerned with what was planned for adequate fencing and

remove snow and ice from the roads.

Brine is being used much more frequently as a more efficient way to keep the roads clear before snow and ice have a chance to build up.

A new brine mixer is being purchased this year to help speed with brine spreading prior to approaching storms.

The city of Sylvania has seven trucks equipped with 10’ wide snow plows and salt spreaders. Two of these trucks are also equipped with liquid brine spreaders to pretreat roads prior to predicted winter storms.

Last year, City Council voted to have snow emergencies declared whenever four or more inches of snow is forecast or accumulates on the streets. During these snow emergencies, there will be no parking permitted on city streets to allow the snow plows to efficiently clear the streets, and also keep the streets wide enough for emergency vehicles to respond to calls for service.

Any vehicles parked in the streets during

snow emergencies will be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents will be notified of snow emergencies through the media and by the Sylvania Alerts System, which residents can subscribe to without cost by visiting lucascountyalerts.com.

Residents are also reminded of the requirement to clear sidewalks in front of their property by the next morning following a snowstorm. Though most residents clear their sidewalks, the city always receives complaints about those who don’t.

Snow and ice removal often keeps the trucks on the road 24 hours a day until the roads are clear. The heavier the storm, the longer the clearing process. The trucks will clear main roads first and then make one pass on all residential streets, following predetermined routes, then return for a second pass to widen residential streets out to full width.

Let’s hope we don’t have too many severe storms this winter. Long-range weather fore-

screening on that side of the single-story building. As a condition in approving the permit, members of the BZA dictated that a split rail fence be placed along the western border of the property and be augmented with existing and newly planted trees.

Zoning Change Approved

Land Use Plan Meeting

Sylvania Township will hold an informational meeting concerning the development of an updated land-use plan Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. at the township administration building, 4927 Holland-Sylvania Rd. Once completed, the land-use plan will be used as a guide for future development of the township in terms of the preferred areas for developing everything from industrial sites to recreation areas.

Initial meetings of subcommittees working on the project have been held, but township officials are seeking input from residents during this initial stage. It is anticipated that a final

plan won't be ready for about 15 months.

Sylvania township trustees have approved a zoning change which is meant to make way for a building to be occupied by tenants 55 years old or older. The senior housing development is at 4120 King Rd., north of the intersection at Sylvania Avenue.

Clover Development, of Williamsville N.Y., is proposing to construct a three-story building with 122 units on the 8.5 acre site. A number of residents at the trustees' meeting objected to the proposals. The criticisms included an increase in traffic in the area as well as potential

We arrived an hour before my grandpa to a room filled with twinkling lights, decorations on every surface, and a large trimmed Christmas tree. My grandma, Rose, had set up all the Christmas decorations on her own to surprise my grandpa and make the house feel festive for all of the company coming.

We were one of the first to arrive, but soon family member after family member arrived with gifts and food in hand. Despite my grandma having made enough food to last a week, Italians don’t show up to a party without bringing some goodies of their own. As my grandpa and my aunt have both told me: in our family, food is love.

Soon everyone was snugly situated in the living room. Aunts and uncles sat on couches or stood by the fireplace, while the cousins sat on the carpet playing with Noel, my grandpa’s Yorkie. Rose received the call from my grandpa’s friend, Lenny, that they were on their way to the house. After twenty minutes of anticipation, we saw the headlights shine through the front window and everyone hushed immediately. Poppy walked through the door and “Surprise!” erupted from the dimly lit room filled with his closest family. He stopped dead in his tracks and startled so abruptly his baseball cap almost fell off his head. Though he went almost completely silent, his face said it all. He stood in the doorway in silence taking it all in. He soon broke into a huge grin as he looked

For many of us, Facebook is like a sprawling digital yearbook. Maybe you have a family computer and you forget to log out of Facebook. Other people using the same computer stumble into your Facebook account and they notice your conspicuous search history.

The easiest way to avoid an awkward conversation is to open your Activity Log. Select More > Search > Clear Searches. Or you can remove each search item one by one.

Every major web browser including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera has private, or incognito, browsing settings. Turning this feature on means your browser will ignore cookies including ad-tracking cookies and won’t record your browsing history. It’s almost like you were never online. To fire up private browsing, just hit CTRL+SHIFT+P (CTRL+OPTION+P on Macs). This works in every browser except Chrome. In Chrome, the shortcut is CTRL+SHIFT+N (OPTION+SHIFT+N on Macs). You can also enable private browsing mode from your browser's main menu. Incognito mode opens a new window where you can browse the Internet in private without Chrome saving the sites you visit. You can switch between an Incognito window and any regular Chrome browsing windows you have open. You'll only be in Incognito mode when you're using the Incognito window.

When your browser is in private browsing mode, it will show a special icon. If you don't see the mask in Firefox, the spy in Chrome or the "InPrivate" in IE and Edge, then you aren't secure. After everyone said their hellos, and before it was time to eat, Poppy said grace for all of us. This was the most special moment of the night. He spoke about how this year had given us some serious health scares, between my mom’s tumor and my uncle’s cancer diagnosis, and how hard it is to beat that sort of enemy. But he reminded us how blessed we are to have such a tight-knit family that supports each other and how many blessings God has given us. I know none of us take our family for granted and my grandpa reminded us how lucky we are to have something that so many people don’t.

After Poppy’s heartfelt blessing, it was mealtime. Plates were filled up with pasta salad, ravioli, vegetable soup, pigs in a blanket, rolls, and veggies. My cousins and I all shared a table, where we caught up on everything from my cousin’s rigorous medical

schooling to the use of “finstas.” We discussed with my uncle how the planning for our cousin’s spring wedding was going and how we were all looking forward to it.

Finally, we all sang Happy Birthday as Poppy blew out the candles on his favorite … pineapple-upside-down cake. I felt a deep sense of gratitude and contentment as I kicked off the holiday season surrounded by some of my favorite people in the whole wide world.

The evening flew by, but with a four-hour drive home awaiting us we prepared to leave despite my desire to stay with my family all night long. No amount of time spent with them will ever be enough for me. My aunt suggested getting together again at the end of December, which would be the best birthday and Christmas gift I could ask for.

I left that evening with a heart full of love (and a belly full of pasta), already looking forward to the next time I could celebrate with my big Italian family.

Senior Andy Summers is competing in his 4th year as a varsity wrestler for the Northview Wildcat program. In his first tournament of the 2016 - 2017 season, Andy out wrestled his competition at the two day Northwood Jim Derr Memorial Tournament claiming the 160 pound Championship. He helped the Wildcats to a second place finish out of 21 teams overall. Andy is also a Varsity baseball player for the Wildcats.

First in category and first overall male, Rafael Garcia, 37 years old, ran the course in 17:34.

OBITUARIES

Richard Bradley

Richard James Bradley, age 85, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully Nov. 27, 2016, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Center, after complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Richard was born on Nov. 2, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, to Bryan and Clara (Ritzman) Bradley and was the youngest of three sons. Richard was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and University of Toledo, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and cherished the many friends he made through the organization. Richard served in the U. S. Army as a First Lieutenant, Infantry.

Richard married the love of his life, Anne Lindsay, on July 29, 1961, and they raised four wonderful children. Richard was a dedicated employee of GM Powertrain for 35-1/2 years where he worked in the standards department as a production manager, and as a plant statistician. He formed many lifelong friends during his years at Powertrain. He was a faithful servant of Sylvania United Church of Christ where he served on many committees and sang in the choir. Richard loved planning many fun vacations for the family. His greatest joy was being with his family, loving them and caring for them. In retirement, Dick and Anne had time to travel. Some of their most memorable trips include England, Japan, Canadian Rockies, California, Florida, Hawaii, and Maine. He loved being outside and maintaining his yard to perfection.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers William and John, whom he loved dearly. It gives us much comfort to know that the brothers are together once again.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Anne; children Susan (Steve) Zirkel, Sandra (Matt) Kelly, Brian (Susan) Bradley, and Elizabeth (Jeff) Gilley; grandchildren Chad and Steven Zirkel; Brad, Allison, Ryan Kelly; Colleen, Lindsey, Molly, and Kevin Bradley; and Connor and Madelyn Gilley; sister-in-laws Nancy Haas and Ruth Bradley; many beloved nieces, nephews, and greatnieces and great-nephews.

The family suggests donations be made to Sylvania United Church of Christ for its music fund, 7240 Erie St., Sylvania, Ohio 43560 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551. Jimmy Elliott

Jimmy L. Elliott, age 68, of Sylvania, Ohio, died Nov. 23, 2016, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born April 5, 1948, in Haleyville, Ala., to the late Walton and Beulah (Cagle) Elliott.

A 1966 graduate of Macomber High School, Jimmy was a toolmaker at General Motors for 36 years. He was a member of UAW Local 14. Jimmy was a motorcycle enthusiast and member of the Dux Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed “piddlin’” in the garage, camping and taking motorcycle trips across the U.S. with his wife and friends.

Jimmy was also an avid hockey fan and

He will also be remembered for his great sense of humor and his passion for Alabama and Pittsburgh Steelers football. Roll Tide!

David Pencheff

David E. Pencheff Sr. 70, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Nov. 28, 2016, at the Ebeid Residence, Hospice Sylvania, Ohio. He was born June 18, 1946, in Toledo to parents Nedelko and Dorothy (Anderson) Pencheff.

David was employed as a mechanic with Hydro-Matic for more than 33 years before retiring. He was proud to have served with the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. David enjoyed being outside. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and camper. David enjoyed sports, especially the Detroit Lions and Tigers, and was a huge fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes.

He is survived by his son David (Brenda) Pencheff Jr.; daughter Angela (Kirk) Leopard; grandchildren Alysabeth and Elizabeth Powers, James Pencheff and Baylie, Brody and Hayley Pencheff; and sister Barbara DePew. David was preceded in death by his parents; son Robert Pencheff; and brother James Pencheff.

David’s family would like to thank the staff of the Ebeid Hospice Residence for their loving care and support during this difficult time.

Nancy Pieper

Nancy L. Pieper, 85, of Sylvania, Ohio, died Nov. 27, 2016, at Ebeid Hospice. She was born May 19, 1931, in Toledo to the late James and Kathleen Hall. Nancy was a medical secretary with Mercy Hospital for more than 20 years. She had many interests including reading, swimming, dancing and especially traveling. Nancy never met a stranger. She loved all people and was always there to help anyone in need. She had a great sense of humor and could always tell stories that made people laugh. Nancy never took herself too seriously and encouraged others to do the same.

Survivors include her children Scott Gage (Samanthia) and Kelly Barney (James); thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three step children, Joe and Chip Pieper and Melody Lucas.

Nancy was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Pieper; son John Smith; and stepdaughter Cindy Pieper.

With sorrowful sadness and regrets, Patricia “Pat” Crayne passed away Dec. 5, 2016. She was a strong and independent woman who enjoyed time with her sons, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She also enjoyed her life simple and had great fun and pride working in her yard.

She is survived by her sister and best friend Catherine Price, her sons Scott (Connie) and Sean Crayne, nephew Josh Price, grandchildren Amber Osborne, Kyle, Connor, Brenden, Sydney, and Meagan Crayne and great-grandson Trevor Osborne.

Eleanor Wilson

Eleanor A. Wilson, 95, passed away Dec. 1, 2016, at Ebeid Hospice Residence, Sylvania, Ohio. She was born on Nov. 12, 1921, to William P. and Louise A. (Monnett) Bennett in Toledo, Ohio She was a 1939 graduate of Whitmer High School. She married Marion L. “Mike” Wilson on April 11, 1941, and they celebrated 71 years of marriage until his passing in 2012. Mike and Elly first met in third grade at Wernert Elementary School and were senior prom dates at Whitmer. Shortly after their marriage, Mike was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe during WWII. During the war years, Elly worked at war plants, Army stores and Packard Motor Car Company. She wrote letters to Mike nearly every day while he was away for three years.

Prior to Mike’s Army service, they had started building a home at 19 and 20 years of age. They decided this was the career they loved and eventually built hundreds of homes in the Toledo area through M.L. Wilson Builder. Elly was secretary and bookkeeper for the firm and managed The Wilson Building, a professional office complex in the Trilby, Ohio, area.

Elly was a past president of the Women’s Club of the former Toledo Association of Home Builders.

She is survived by daughters Kathy (Rich) Troxel and Janet (Scott) Wenland, all of Sylvania, Ohio. She was very proud of her grandchildren who called her Nana, Dr.

Tiffany Troxel (Nish Shah), Dr. Jennifer (Mike) Ruddy, Dr. Tara (Scott) Amenson and Andrew (Lindsay) Wenland. She had five great grandchildren.

Elly was preceded in death by sisters Lucille Daggett and Marcia Stichler. She is survived by special nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Kingston Residence of Sylvania where Eleanor resided since 2010 and Pastor Craig Scholl, his wife, Peggy, and their canine companion, Tara, who visited on a regular basis.

Ursula Casey

Ursula Genevieve (Romaker) Casey passed away peacefully on Nov. 29, 2016, at age 87 at Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren, Mich. Proud mother and mother-in-law of Mike and Wendy, Gretchen and Bob, John, Pat and Michelle and grandmother of Adam, Anna, Julia, Christine, Mike, Jacquelyn, Sean, Evan, Kyle and Erin.

Ursula was born and raised in Sylvania, Ohio, by her mother, Sophia, and father, Lawrence. During nursing school she met Toledo resident Jack Casey and they married and relocated to the Detroit area. Ursula was a devout Catholic; an intelligent, proud and educated woman.

The Home vs. Condo Decision

1. Location: First and foremost, you must decide where you want to live.

From there, find out about the condo and single-family house options in the area. If you want to be in the heart of the city, condos will be more prevalent.

However, for the same price, you could potentially find a single-family home just a short commute away.

2. Privacy: Think about how much privacy you would like. Having complete privacy is possible in a singlefamily house, while condo living means neighbors will be quite close. Condos may not offer private outdoor space.

3. Responsibility: When it comes to decisions affecting your home, do you feel comfortable involving neighbors?

Many condo communities have strict rules about everything from paint

choices to the hours when you can take out your trash cans. Single-family home communities tend to be more lenient, unless the community has a home owners’ association (HOA).

4. Maintenance: Many condos include maintenance fees that cover landscaping and even exterior maintenance on the unit. With a home, the home owner will have to take care of any maintenance. Many HOA communities do take care of exteriors, but specifics vary from neighborhood to neighborhood.

5. Budget: How much do you want to spend on the property? Condos are usually more affordable than a house, even with the housing market in flux.

Give this point considerable thought.

The last thing you want is to overextend financially.
