alling all chocolate lovers! Sylvania Area Family Services will hold its annual Chocolate and Wine Affair on March 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at its facility located at 5440 Marshall Rd. in Sylvania.

Since 2005, SAFS has been hosting the popular fundraising event, which helps to support the organization’s programs and services including summer camp, the food pantry, and youth diversion program.

SAFS Executive Director Dottie Segur mentioned that the organization is seeking to raise funds to bring back its afterschool tutoring and mentoring program this year.

Toledo Symphony Orchestra hosts North Star Festival

The Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle will be filled with one of the world’s greatest voices, Kathleen Battle, on March 16 at 7:30 p.m. ‘Kathleen Battle Underground Railroad – A Spiritual Journey,’ will take guests through an incredible journey to freedom during the time of slavery. The presentation is being performed only in cities along the Underground Railroad route. Battle, an Ohio native and Metropolitan Opera star, will be joined by Clarence Smith Community Chorus and Voices at BGSU. Tickets range from $49-$89.

The North Star Festival, held in March through April, with additional community programs beginning in February, will celebrate the rich heritage of this area as a safe haven along the Underground Railroad.

The Underground Railroad was a 19thcentury network that helped slaves escape to freedom. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will present music, stories and activities for all ages to explore this historically significant time. “We will be going into the community to share music and stories with everyone from toddlers to retirees,” stated Director of Marketing at TSO, Felecia Kanney. The North Star Festival will feature four performances at various venues. These include Romance and Spirituals, Kathleen Battle - A Spiritual Journey, Classical Ellington, and TSO will perform as part of the Toledo Opera’s premiere of “I Dream.”

“The North Star Festival is brimming with the unexpected,” stated Kanney. “The North Star Festival will highlight our local heritage and celebrate the musical contributions of Black Americans throughout history from the 1850s to 1960s. Members of our

The Toledo Opera presents the debut of the Rhythm & Blues opera by Douglas Tappin. The opera, “I Dream,” coincides with the 50th commemoration of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The performance will be held April 6 to 8, at the Valentine Theater. The opera will focus on the final 36 hours in the incredible life of Dr. King. “I Dream” uses flashbacks and significant memories from his childhood and moments from the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement.

“I Dream” is a story of a courageous preacher from Atlanta and his journey through a higher calling against great odds and adversity. Dr. King confronted injustice and embraced the dream of a society with a culture of love and humanity.

Sylvania–Then and Now

The Sylvania house at 5823 Main St. was constructed in 1902 and is 116 years old.

Victor Burg purchased the property in 1901, so he is the one who either built the house or had the house built. Burg ran the large hotel that used to be located on the northwest corner of Main and Maplewood. He owned and operated that hotel from 1891 until 1909 and he called it Hotel Victor. He continued to own the hotel until it burned to the ground in 1915 but began renting the building to others to manage the hotel from 1909 through 1915.

In 1904 Mr. Burg sold this Main Street house to Caroline Hewig, and then it went to William Elg, who also owned the home to the south. Elg purchased the house and probably rented it out until 1920 when he sold it to Hubert Shanks. Shanks was a farmer who lived in Sylvania Township at the time, and he probably rented the house out until he sold it in 1927 to George and Orpha Keene. You may remember the Keenes from my last article when I wrote about them living in the house at 5817 Main St. In the 1930 census, the Keenes were renting the 5823 Main St. house to William H. and Florence M. Zettlemeyer. This couple were both listed as 55 years old and he was working as a master mechanic at the fertilizer company in Sylvania Township.

Living with them was their granddaughter, Florence E. Kuhn who was nine years old.

George Weisweber was living with his stepfather and mother, George and Orpha Keene, as of the 1930 census in their house at 5817 Main St. In that census George was

listed as 27 years old and working as a salesman at his stepfather’s cigar store, which he owned in downtown Sylvania. Mr. Weisweber was also listed as divorced at this time.

A 1933 Village of Sylvania water meter reading list shows George Keene still owning the 5823 Main house and George Pollock was the renting tenant.

The Keene’s son, George Weisweber, married Helen Langham in 1934 and they began renting the home from Keene. In the 1940 census, the Keenes were still renting the house out to her son and daughter-in-law, George and Helen Weisweber. Weisweber was listed as 39 years old and Helen was 34 years old. George was now working as a bartender at his step-father’s tavern in downtown Sylvania.

An article in the Sylvania Sentinel dated Sept. 18, 1941, reported that Mrs. Helen Weisweber of Sylvania, was going to enter some of her paintings in the Toledo Artists Jubilee, which was being held in Toledo.

Another article in the Sylvania Sentinel dated Dec. 31, 1942 said that Mr. and Mrs. George W. Weisweber of 5823 Main were the proud parents of a baby girl born on Christmas Day in Toledo hospital. The baby was named Joan Karen Weisweber.

Records show that in 1945 the Keenes sold the 5823 Main St. house to their son and daughter-in-law, George and Helen Weisweber. George Keene died in 1946 and Orpha Keene died in 1954.

According to the Sylvania Sentinel dated June 30, 1960: “The George Weiswebers and daughter, Joan, will hold an open house at their home, 5823 Main St., on Friday, July 1 in honor of Mrs. Weisweber’s mother, Mrs.

5823 Main Street Susie Langham, and sister, Miss Lenore Langham, visitors from California. Mrs. Langham arrived in Sylvania May 23 to attend her granddaughter Joan’s graduation from Burnham High School. Mrs. Langham herself graduated from the old Sylvania High School in 1898, one of a class of three, as compared with 183 in the Class of 1960, three generations later.”

George Weisweber died in 1970 and Helen continued to own and live in this house. In 1980 she obtained a building permit to construct a 20 x 20-foot two-car detached garage. She continued to live here until she

sold the house in 1997. Helen passed away on Sept. 2, 1998, at the age of 93. They are both buried in Ravine Cemetery in Sylvania.

On Aug. 28, 1997, the house was purchased by Deborah D. Moan and that same year a building permit was issued to Jim Moan to add a kitchen addition and a family room addition on the rear of the home. Then, in 2006, they obtained a building permit to move the existing garage back and add a 24 x 24-foot garage in front of that. The house is still owned by Deborah Moan as of 2018. according to county records.

Redistricting amendment will be on the May 2018 ballot

If you have circulated or signed a redistricting petition, pat yourself on the back!

It was the petition effort that brought the parties together and resulted in bipartisan support for the Constitutional Amendment that will be on the May 8 ballot.

This is a landmark, first-in-the-nation, bipartisan legislative effort to end the practice of gerrymandering in the drawing of congressional districts. A model!

On Feb. 6, the Ohio House voted 83-10 to pass the proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution, which had passed the Ohio Senate unanimously in a 31-0 vote the night before. The amendment, for the first time, requires bipartisan input and approval of redrawn Ohio congressional maps. The new rules will take effect in 2021, following the 2020 Census.

Fair Districts=Fair Elections, a coalition of good-government groups (including the League of Women Voters of Ohio, NAACP Ohio Chapter and Common Cause Ohio) support the measure, which meets their requirements for reform.

However, until the amendment passes in May, the coalition will continue its signature collection effort. The League of Women Voters of Toledo-Lucas County, Perrysburg Area and Bowling Green, have regular signaturecollection hours at Chandler Cafe, Sips, Gathering Volumes, Grounds for Thought and other area venues, announced weekly.

The Proposed Redistricting Amendment Process’

The Amendment, Issue 1 on the May ballot, outlines a four-stage process for reaching agreement on a redistricting map. The process provides for bipartisan engagement, keeps communities together and does not favor one party or candidate.

Stage One: Passage of a new 10-year redistricting map requires a three-fifths vote of both the Ohio House and Senate and must include the support of at least 50 percent of the minority party members for adoption. If an

Stage Two: The Ohio Redistricting Commission, an established seven-person bipartisan commission comprised of the Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor of State and two representatives from each chamber of the General Assembly, must approve a map with at least two minority party votes. If an agreement isn’t reached on a 10-year map, then the process moves to Stage Three.

Stage Three: The Ohio General Assembly can adopt a 10-year map with a three-fifths vote of both the House and Senate that includes the support of one-third of the minority party. This map would be subject to a gubernatorial veto and a citizen referendum.

Any map drawn with bipartisan support, as outlined above, must keep a minimum of 65 counties whole. No more than 18 counties can be split once, and the number of counties that can be split twice is limited to five. No county can be split more than twice.

The amendment also requires two public hearings on any proposed map and allows for

public submission of maps for consideration by the map drawing authority. This is significant because it strengthens legal and public relations pressure to further deter partisan tendencies of the map-makers.

Stage Four: If a bipartisan map is not achieved, and there is an impasse, a simple legislative majority can draw a temporary map for just four years, applying strict, mapdrawing criteria to prevent unduly splitting counties and creating a map that favors or disfavors a political party or incumbent. As a further check, the four-year map is subject to gubernatorial veto and a citizen referendum.

The process begins again when the four-year map expires.

catering business,” states Cafferty. “The Ladies Auxiliary wanted to improve catering and the post wanted to expand its offerings.

Space was needed especially for this time of year--fish fry season! Purchasing the new building would also allow us to hold wedding receptions. Originally, our location was out in the middle of nowhere. Sylvania has grown around us and has placed us in an unintentional good strategic location.”

At present, the Post has over 500 members, split into three membership groups. They are the Legionnaires, veterans who served during a time of war, Sons of the American Legion, consisting of sons of those who served, and the Ladies Auxiliary, who are the mothers, daughters and spouses of veterans. Cafferty explains, “There is a subgroup of the Ladies Auxiliary, called Juniors, consisting of granddaughters or daughters under the age of 18. We are excited to have members who range from 10 months old to 90 years old. We are also fortunate to have Gulf War veterans making up 50 percent of our executive board.”

Southview High School student Jacob Connolly was one of the top 18 winners in the state of Ohio. The Ohio Legion sponsored him to travel to Washington D.C. We also sponsor high school juniors, after an interview process, to attend Buckeye Boys and Girls State. It is a week-long program, held at the University of Miami, that develops leadership and pride in American citizenship.”

The organization also provides flags for the Sylvania School District classrooms.

Community involvement

One of the pillars of the American Legion is youth development. “We invest a lot in our local school systems through our Americanism Program,” states Cafferty. “In addition to that program, we provide public speakers and color guards for events. We also strive to educate kids about American history and patriotism. We give an Americanism and Government test to interested Northview and Southview students. The American Legion Americanism and Government test covers different functions of state and local government and American History. The test and essay winners are given college scholarship funds from the Post. Sylvania

Fun and games

Among the most popular aspects of Post membership are the social activities. Corn hole, pool tournaments, potlucks, holiday parties, Walleye and Mud Hens games are enjoyed by members.

The road to leadership

Commander Cafferty, who was deployed to Iraq in 2009, became involved in the Post in 2011. “In college, I couldn’t find a place for my leadership skills. I was looking for an organization that would satisfy my desire to be part of a team and I found it here,” recalls Cafferty. “I serve veterans in multiple ways and on a bigger scale, invest in our community’s youth. Our members and I will go beyond our walls to agencies in need and volunteer, which is also very rewarding. We now live stream meetings so vets with young kids or those who cannot attend, due to disabilities, can be part of meetings. We try to grow deeper roots and reach out to other veterans’ organizations. I think the American Legion will continue to modernize to serve modern veterans. I’m proud to be part of it.”

I couldn’t agree more. Plus, through personal experience, a visit to Post #468 on a snowy Friday night is worth the effort. The fish is amazing!

2018 Capital Improvements

The days are getting and the longer temperatures will soon be Craig Stough getting warmer. That means the 2018 construction season will be getting underway, and the city of Sylvania has several capital improvement projects planned. Most are being financed in part by state of Ohio grant funds. All will be publicly bid or use state of Ohio prebid term prices to take advantage of the competitive prices available. No tax increases or property owner assessments will be made. All of these projects will improve Sylvania and help keep our community one of the best places to live and work in northwest Ohio.

River Trail Phase II

$2,487,260.26. Their bid was 3.5 percent under the engineer’s estimate. The city’s expense will be about $850,000, only about a third of the total construction cost. Flower Hospital contributed $400,000. Another $850,000 was received from the Clean Ohio Trails Fund program, and another $400,000 from the State of Ohio Capital Improvement Budget.

Residential Street Microsurfacing

The city of Sylvania will continue its pavement microsurfacing improvements using the Ohio Department of Transportation Cooperative Program to provide pavement rehabilitation on residential streets with an estimated cost this year of $92,000. Microsurfacing consists of applying a polymer-modified asphalt emulsion based resurfacing material to the existing pavement surface. This application will provide a hard wearing surface on structurally sound pavements with the primary goal of extending pavement life by covering cracks, stopping unraveling, reducing water infiltration and oxidation deterioration. The following roadways have been field reviewed and found to be suitable for this application in 2018: Acres Road north of Alexis Road, Glasgow Road north of Monroe Street, Todd Drive south of Williamsburg Drive, and Appomattox Drive.

The largest capital improvement project for 2018 is the River Trail Phase II extension, which has already been bid and is under contract. The River Trail will be extended east from Harroun Road, through the ProMedica Flower Hospital campus, under US 23 using the existing highway bridges, and up to Monroe St. adjacent to the Burger King restaurant. It is expected to be completed in late summer. Miller Brothers Construction, Inc. of Archbold, Ohio, was the low bidder in the amount of

single development nor one or two exceptionally costly houses responsible for the upswing in valuations, it is just how the numbers worked out over the year.

Pothole Patrol on the job

After Sylvania Township road crews have cleared roadways of ice and snow, there is still plenty of work to be done. The township crews are still busy on the road, but the next job is known as “pothole patrol.”

“When the weather allows for it, we’re out looking for potholes and filling them with what’s known as a cold patch,” according to Rob Nash, road superintendent. Cold patch isn’t considered to be a permanent fix for the problem, but it’s the best that can be done locally during the winter season.

“It should at least allow drivers not to have to undergo one of those abrupt bounces,” he said. When the weather allows, crews will return to apply a “hot mix” at the area creating a more permanent solution for that portion of the roadway.

Over the years this has become more work.

In 1999, he noted, there were 112.39 miles of township roads, compared to the current 131.11.

Single-family home construction permits

Although the number of construction permits for single-family homes in Sylvania Township dropped slightly in 2017, the projected value of each home to be built jumped substantially.

In the year prior, the township had hit 100 permits for the first time in several years. The record high was 134 permits in 2006, and the low was 28 in 2009, during the financial crisis.

Since then the trend has been upward, although last year saw a decline of seven percent with a total of 93. Even though the total was slightly lower, the estimated cost per dwelling came in at $310,572, an increase of about 18 percent over the estimated cost of $262,951 in the previous year.

Daryl Graus, the manager of the township office of planning and zoning, said there is no

Brookhill Court Reconstruction

Full reconstruction and waterline replacement will take place on Brookhill Court at a cost of $216,000, with the Ohio Public Works Commission funding $64,400.

Work done from Monroe Street to Ten Mile Creek Bridge will include full depth reconstruction, storm sewer replacement and streetscape improvements at a cost of $792,000, with ODOT funding $347,650 and OPWC funding $235,500.

Resurfacing will be done on Summer Drive and Kings Run at a cost of $300,000. We will work with the contractors to complete these improvements quickly and efficiently and reduce inconvenience to our residents. We appreciate your patience as the projects proceed this coming construction season.

Zoning changes approved

The Sylvania Township Zoning Commission has recommended approval for zoning changes needed for a proposed housing development on nearly 55 acres on Brint Road just east of Mitchaw Road.

Mitchell Construction Co. is proposing to build 50 villa-style residences and 114 singlefamily homes on the property. The commission recommended approving a request for a residential planned unit development for about 15 acres of the site beginning at Brint Road. That is the portion of the land which is intended for villa construction. Steven Miller, the developer, said the villas will be detached single-unit buildings.

They also recommended approval of a zoning change from a planned unit development to residential for the northerly remaining 40 acres of the project. The northern border of the proposed development abuts Pacesetter Park. Miller said he anticipated the price for houses at about $275,000 and in the neighborhood of $200,000 for the villas.

Mary Himmelein, chairman of the commission, said she has not seen a housing development of this size in years. The staff of the planning commission recommended approval because the proposed development is compatible with surrounding residential uses, is consistent with the township land use plan, and will have minimal adverse impact on the area.

The proposal will next be heard by the Sylvania Township trustees who will make the final decision on the requested zoning changes.

When To Book A Flight From The Snow:

Whether it’s for the holidays, spring break or summer vacation, it’s never too early to start planning your next trip. That includes scoping out airline tickets. I know that the prices on some tickets are enough to make you seriously consider not going. There are a ton of theories out there about the best day to buy airline tickets. Some people say Tuesday at 3 p.m., some say 1 a.m. Wednesday and some people say the weekend.

Some studies have found that tickets purchased on the weekend are historically an average of 5 percent cheaper than similar tickets purchased during the week. If you see one airline offering a deal on Monday, make plans to buy your tickets on Tuesday. If there are no deals going on, buy on the weekend.

Flying on Tuesday is still the best day to fly for less. Fewer people travel on Tuesdays, and less demand means a better deal for you.

Friday and Sunday are the most expensive.

The time of day you travel is also important.

No one wants to fly at 4 a.m., but you can shave off big bucks from your ticket price if you do. A good rule of thumb is that domestic tickets will be at their lowest price six weeks before your date of departure. Even better, if you know you’re going to be taking a trip, start haunting the sites really early, and when you see a good deal, grab it. Set some bookmarks or favorites on your browser to quickly bounce through multiple booking sites. Ask for email reminders for your preferences.

Clyde Englehardt of Toledo Coin Exchange presents a program to Jill Clever, the local history and genealogy manager for Toledo Lucas County Public Library. Businesses of all types are recognized including medical, elder care, retail, service, office, institutional, industrial and those organizations that add to the community’s quality of life through events or services.

People who work in medical practices often encounter patients who are facing the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

Many times, their health conditions have caused economic hardship that impacts their entire life, including the ability to pay for life’s necessities, such as housing, utilities and food.

For years, staff members of The Toledo Clinic’s medical practices have responded by raising money among themselves to help needy families pay these nonmedical expenses.

Starting in 2018, The Toledo Clinic is building on the generosity of its employees by creating The Toledo Clinic Foundation, which will formalize the giving program while also allowing it a chance to grow.

“By establishing a Foundation, we can go out and seek larger gifts from the philanthropic community in the area,” said

Mike D’Eramo, chief administrative officer of The Toledo Clinic. “Those funds, when combined with money we raise internally from our caring and generous physicians and staff, will allow us to help more people.”

The Foundation is in the process of naming a volunteer board as well as establishing guidelines and an application process for people who need assistance. “Our high quality of care is built on the commitment and generosity of the people who work for us,” said D’Eramo. “The Toledo Clinic Foundation will reflect the very same values.”

The Toledo Clinic is a multi-specialty group practice, consisting of over 270 independent physicians and associated healthcare professionals, practicing in 40 medical and surgical specialties, at more than 60 locations, across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Rudolph Libbe Inc., of the Rudolph Libbe Group, has received Varco Pruden’s 2018 Best-in-Class Hall of Fame Award in the Warehouse Category for the Principle Business Enterprises’ 47,000-square-foot warehouse, constructed in 2017.

Rudolph Libbe Inc. was general contractor/construction manager and GEM Inc., also of the Rudolph Libbe Group,

erected the Varco Pruden pre-engineered steel building. MacPherson Architects, Inc. designed the Principle Business Enterprises warehouse project.

Rudolph Libbe also received 2018 Hall of Fame awards for the Buck and Knobby Equipment Company dealership in Holland, Ohio, and the Yark BMW showroom in Sylvania Township.

Transformations opens in Thormont Bldg.

Ceila Bradley and Lyndsey Hoot are seeing clients in the new location.

Lyndsey Hoot, a 2010 Northview graduate, has leased the corner location in the Thormont Building, 6616 Monroe St. to open specialty boutique salon, her Transformations.

“It has always been my dream to open this salon,” she said. “I have been looking for the right space for over a year. I grew up in Sylvania and wanted to have my business here,” she said. “But I preferred a corner location with good street visibility,” she added Hoot said she learned about the space from JamiLynn Fox of the JamiLynn Fox Allstate Insurance Agency, whose office is also in the building. “When she told me about the available space, I was afraid it would be too small. But when I stopped by, I could see the potential,” she remembered. “The building owner, Boyd Montgomery, has been awesome and so helpful,” she said. “And, I love being here. This space has worked out well and it feels like home. I am eager to be part of the downtown Sylvania community.”

With help from her family, friends and wonderful clientele, Hoot has transformed the former office suite into the unique salon she envisioned with three private rooms and a fourth nearly private space housing the manicure and pedicure stations. Two rooms are designated for advanced hair care and

styling while the third is used for microblading, permanent makeup, eyelash extensions and more, according to Hoot. She is assisted by her best friend, Celia Bradley.

“We have two custom-built barn doors on each of the three rooms, which can be closed to offer complete privacy or provide an open feeling in the salon when the doors are not closed,” she pointed out.

Hoot explained that she has been offering hair replacement services since she completed school. “This service can be life changing for people,” she said. “I work with each client to build a look, customizing hair color, size and density. I use a procedure using human hair interwoven into a lace or poly backing. Once that is in place, I hand cut the hair adapting it to my client. That hair replacement can be styled, blown dry and treated just like any natural hair,” she pointed out. “Clients come in every three to four weeks for me to clean and/or redo the replacement. I love to hear all of my clients’ confidence building stories about hair replacement,” she noted.

Hoot also provides hair cutting, styling and color services along with advanced services such as scalp pigmentation, waxing, advanced hair replacement services, extensions, wig selection, styling and more.

Clients can also buy a full line of natural hair care products while at the new salon.

Hoot also plans to offer wigs for clients.

“This is not just another salon,” Hoot promised. “I work with many clients, men and women, who have different medical issues and need specialty services regarding their hair or those losing their hair. This is a one-on-one experience and my appointments last from one hour up to four depending on the services offered. For example, I work with many women journeying through different stages of cancer treatment, from just losing their hair to chemo treatments, to fitting them for wigs and cutting them to their preference. I also work with them as their natural hair grows back, adding extensions when needed and styling the different stages of hair growth. There are other medical conditions such as alopecia, male pattern baldness, receding hairline, and trichotillomania which I also help with. I like to think I help my clients find themselves in the mirror,” she offered.

Dr. Kristen Sauty joined the staff of SylvaniaVet, 4801 Holland Sylvania Rd., the first of January. A native of Dayton, Dr. Souty is a graduate of The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Her husband’s job brought them to northwest Ohio. “I am delighted to have found this position at SylvaniaVet. The level of treatment provided by an excellent staff, the state-of-the-art equipment and facility all add up to providing the best care for cats and dogs. This is a great place to be,” she affirmed.

“I have always loved a challenge and I enjoy figuring out puzzles so this is a perfect career for me,” she reported. “I listen to my patients’ owners and hear their stories and then look at the signs and signals my patients give to me to figure out what is going on with them,” she said. “I love watching my patients heal and feel better,” Dr. Sauty offered.

Fritos-Crusted Corn Quiche

Vegetable oil spray 2 cups Fritos corn chips 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted 1 cup grated mild cheddar cheese, divided 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen ⅓ cup diced sweet onion, such as Texas 1015, or red onion ⅓ cup diced red bell pepper 3 large eggs 1 cup half-and-half ¾ teaspoon kosher salt or coarse sea salt

For over 40 years, busy moms have relied on slow cookers to help them get homemade meals on the table without the hassle of traditional cooking methods. Today, slow cookers are more Jennifer Ruple popular than ever with home cooks referencing more sophisticated recipes and experimenting with a larger variety of foods.

“For most of us who were given slow cookers in the 70s, it was just about throwing everything in and coming back 12 hours later.

The food was done, but it wasn’t that great,” said Cheryl Alters Jamison, a four-time James Beard Award winning author. Her recently released book, “Texas Slow Cooker,” includes 125 recipes showcasing the Lone Star State’s best dishes and how to prepare them in a fussfree way using a slow cooker.

Jamison and her late husband Bill Jamison have written numerous books on topics such as cooking with smoke, barbecue sauces, grilling, breakfast, cooking with kids, and traditional foods of New Mexico, selling over 2 million copies. She is the former food editor for New Mexico Magazine and host of Heating It Up, a food talk radio show.

In preparation for the book, Jamison began

thinking about the things that benefit from low, slow cooking. “The first dish I thought about was flan, which is usually cooked in a water bath to keep it moist. That worked out well, so I thought let’s try a few other things like cheesecake and things that are ooey gooey good like Texas sheet cake and brownies,” she said.

“Texas Slow Cooker” includes recipes for classic dishes such as, Chicken Tinga, King Ranch Casserole, Mac & Cheese with a Texas Twist, Beef Picadillo and Gulf Gumbo. Plus, there are recipes for breakfast foods, snacks, chili and stews, meat and poultry, seafood, side dishes and desserts, all adapted for the slow cooker.

The low and slow process of cooking is just one of the benefits of using a slow cooker Jamison noted. “It does keep moisture in food very effectively,” she said. “It’s a great handsoff cooking method if you have to be away from home. With a very busy lifestyle that many of us have, slow cooking works very well.”

In her book, Jamison mentioned that she thinks slow cookers are bit undervalued in the professional cooking world. “Slow cooking started out by using a lot of processed foods like canned soups and Cheez Whiz. I think that was part of it, especially with serious cooks; however, you can start with real food and have a good meal.”

Spray the interior of a 6-inch (15-cm) springform pan with oil and, unless you know it is leakproof, wrap aluminum foil around the exterior tightly.

In a food processor, make crumbs of the Fritos. Pour in the butter and pulse another time or two to combine. Pour the crumb mixture into the pan and press into an even layer. Scatter two-thirds of the filling’s cheese over the crust.

Fritos-Crusted Corn Quiche

Generously grease the inside of the slow cooker with about 1 teaspoon of the butter.

Warm the rest of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté the wings, in batches if needed, until they are nicely colored on all sides. Transfer the wings to the slow cooker as they are done. When all wings are browned, add the other ingredients to the slow cooker and give it all a stir. Cover and cook on the low heat setting for 4 to 4 ½ hours, or 2 to 2 ½ hours on high, until the wings are tender and gooey good.

Serve from the slow cooker on the warm setting for a casual event, or transfer to a plate and serve.

Summer Peach and Brazos Berry Crisp

Unsalted butter 2 pounds ripe juicy peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced thickly, or unthawed frozen peaches 1 pint fresh raspberries, blackberries, dewberries, blueberries, or stemmed small strawberries 2 tablespoons granulated sugar In a skillet, warm the butter over medium heat. Add the corn, onion and bell pepper, and sauté until the vegetables are just tender.

Spoon the mixture evenly into the crust.

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, halfand-half, and salt. Pour the custard over the other ingredients in the pan. Top with the rest of the cheese.

Place the pan in the slow cooker and cover.

Cook on high for 1 ½ to 2 hours, until the quiche is lightly set but is still moist looking.

Turn off the slow cooker and let quiche sit in it uncovered for about 15 minutes. Transfer to a work surface. Run a knife between the quiche and the pan. Remove the pan. Slice the quiche and serve warm or at room temperature.

Jala-Peach Wings

Summer Peach and Brazos Berry Crisp

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ½ teaspoon kosher salt or coarse sea salt ¼ teaspoon ground cumin

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 3 pounds chicken wings, wing tips removed, or wing drumettes 1 cup peach jam ¼ cup minced onion 3 tablespoons minced pickled jalapeño plus 1 tablespoon pickling liquid from the jar

Topping 1 cup oats (the “old-fashioned” variety) 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup packed brown sugar, preferably dark brown 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more for the top Pinch of salt ½ cup (1 stick) plus 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Generously grease the inside of the slow cooker with butter.

Dump the peaches, berries, and sugar in the slow cooker, and give a light stir.

Prepare the topping. Combine the oats, pecans, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a food processor until you have a coarse meal. Add the butter and pulse a few times until the mixture becomes evenly crumbly.

Add the mixture to the slow cooker. Cover and cook on the low heat setting for 3 ½ to 4 hours.

Scoop out and serve warm. Leftovers are good at room temperature or reheated.

Central Trail school counselor honored by state organization “I love my job,” said Kristine Kunkle, Central Trail School Counselor, who was recently named the Elementary School Counselor of the Year and the Overall School Counselor of the Year for the state of Ohio. She will be representing the state at the national level in Washington D.C. at the end of 2018 when she will be considered for the American School Counselor of the Year.

Central Trail, under Kunkle’s leadership, has also received the OSCAR, the Ohio School Counselors Accountability Report award for the fourth year. “This is a snapshot of the comprehensive, developmental school counseling program and reflects the positive climate exhibited by this school,” she said.

Kunkle celebrated her 25th year in this role, the last 14 with Sylvania schools. Prior to that, she worked for Lucas County Educational Service Center. She has been very active in local, state and national counseling organizations, crediting Toni Gerber, former Central principal, with her support and encouragement. "She encouraged me to

become active on the state level with the Ohio School Counselors Association through their Emerging Leader Program, which resulted in my being one of 12 professionals to craft the Ohio Department of Education, Learning standards for K through third grade in the domain of Social-Emotional Development four years ago,” she remembered.

Kunkle also acknowledges the school administration for bringing back school counselors in each school. “Sylvania is being proactive in addressing mental health wellness,” Kunkle said.

“School counselors support children with academic, career, social and emotional development. The delivery modes of services include guidance in the classroom, small group, individual counseling and crisis response. Individual student planning is also provided to students. Crafting fundraiser, annual garage sale planned at Southview High School All crafters are welcome to a day of scrapbooking, sewing, crocheting, and more at Southview High School on Feb. 24, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Senior parents can take this opportunity to get help organizing their grad’s pictures and avoid the rush of last minute preparation.

Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included in the table fee. The costs are $30 for nearly six feet of table space, and $35 for a full eight-foot table.

School Superintendent goes ‘undercover’

What roles have you assumed?

The premise of our undercover superintendent, aka “Undercover Supt” campaign is to get me as the district leader, out in the trenches, experiencing and appreciating all of the hard work our over 900 employees do on a daily basis to make our district shine. For the next six to eight weeks I will be going “undercover” in jobs such as a cafeteria server, daytime custodian, elementary librarian, bus aide, special education paraprofessional, career tech teacher and bus mechanic to experience these jobs and to appreciate the hardworking employees that do these jobs successfully on a daily basis.

How are you disguising yourself?

I am trying my best to disguise myself by wearing what the employee wears on a daily basis. The uniform or regular clothing they would wear to do the job successfully is how I dress. I am not always hidden, which is okay… to me, it is more about experiencing the work that is done in the position I am fulfilling and appreciating the hard work of the person I am undercover for.

Have you been recognized?

I have been recognized a few times, it is kind of hard to not see my face, but overall people are so appreciative of me taking the time to get out there and do these jobs, plus to appreciate these jobs, that are so important to the success of our students.

Musician of the Week

Northview’s Riley Runnells, daughter of Chrys Peterson and Tom Runnells, sings soprano in the A Cappella Choir and is the beatboxer for Northview’s Harmony Road Show. She also is an active member of the Northview Theatre Department. Apart from her musical activities, she is co-editor for The Student Prints, co-captain of the varsity tennis team, class secretary, a member of student council, leadership academy, National Honor Society, Drama Club vice president, and part of the N-Compass diversity club and world language club. After graduation, she plans to study communications and journalism.

In another role, Adam Fineske helps Timberstone’s daytime custodian Carolyn Akins.

What have children said once they realize it is you?

Kids are so funny. They appreciate anything different. They look at me and say “hey, don’t I know you?” It is great to go by some of my side names as I am doing the jobs. When I was the cafeteria server I was “Mr. Adam” and when I was the custodian I was “Johnny Mop!”

What prompted you to do this?

In my first year as superintendent, I continue to try to travel around the district to find our “WHY”…the WHY that drives us to do what we do every day to make Sylvania Schools great. This WHY should motivate and inspire us every day to do what we do for kids.

In order to truly know and understand our WHY, I have to get out, get to know our staff, our kids and our community and help to bring this WHY alive. For me, this was a great opportunity, in a fun and creative way, to get out there, do the important jobs of a variety of our employees and really experience what makes Sylvania Schools so great. I look forward to many more experiences over the next month or so and I believe this will truly help me to connect and understand our district on a whole new level than ever before as superintendent.

Sylvanian Nipun Jayatissa, a student at Maumee Valley Country Day School, has been selected as a 2018 finalist for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology THINK program, an annual science research and innovation competition for high school students. His research proposal was selected as one of six finalists out of over 175 proposals received from students around the country.

He has been invited to visit MIT, present his proposal and receive feedback from the MIT faculty and students. During this time he will attend xFair (a student-run technology expo), talk with the MIT faculty, have lab tours, and more.

Nipun will also receive a $1,000 award to purchase research supplies for his project.

YMCA takes on childhood obesity with new program On March 5 the YMCA of Greater Toledo will begin offering Healthy Weight and Your Child, a pilot program designed to empower children between the ages of 7-13, with support from their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity affects 17 percent of all children and adolescents in the United States, triple the rate from the generation before. Today, 1 in 6 children are obese and 1 in 3 are overweight, which poses greater risks for a number of health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and mental health issues.

Sylvania Rec aims to provide positive experiences for families MIKE MCMAHON TIME TO PLAY

During the month of January, Sylvania Recreation took in more than 1,500 youth sport registrations.

These registrations were primarily for three different sportsMike McMahon basketball, indoor soccer and lacrosse. These 1,500 plus registrants were placed on 147 different teams, in 31 different leagues/age divisions and were from at least 15 different schools.

The Program Department at Sylvania Recreation is comprised of five dedicated fulltime staff members that are tasked with attempting to place children on the appropriate teams that hopefully will lead to a positive experience and great memories. These staff members take a great deal of pride in the activities, sport leagues and programs that they coordinate and know that the service they provide to the community is essential as well as a very important component to the outstanding quality of life that the residents of Sylvania have come to expect.

One of the biggest challenges the Sylvania Recreation Program Department staff members face is dealing with registrations that come in after the registration deadline.

Although there is nothing we want more than to be able to accommodate everyone, there are some circumstances that can make that difficult or even impossible. This is why we find it very important to remain consistent with the policies that we have in place when creating rosters for these programs. Let’s take a look at two different scenarios that show extremes from both ends of the “roster forming” spectrum; Scenario #1-Third grade girls softball; Online registration closes on Friday at midnight and there are 96 girls registered, 12 girls from each of eight different schools. It couldn’t be much easier. We simply form eight different teams and each of those teams has a perfect amount of 12 players. After these rosters are formed, we quickly identify eight volunteer parent coaches, 0 late registrations come in and the season begins. We work our way through a 12 game season and each of the eight teams wins five, six or seven games.

Scenario #2-Fourth grade boys basketball; Registration closes and there are 88 boys registered. The breakdown by school is; Hill View 21, Central Trail 17, Highland 12, Stranahan nine, Whiteford six, Sylvan four, Maplewood seven, Westside Montessori six, four are homeschooled and two are from Rossford (Parents with joint custody, dad lives in Sylvania). Within these 88 registrations, there are three cousins that all go to three different schools; they want to play on the same team so that their grandparents can watch them all at once. There are also four travel soccer players that all request to play together so that they can make their soccer practice in Cleveland every Tuesday night. Finally, there are six players from four different schools that all played on the same team last season that wish to play together again this season. After the rosters were sent out, we received nine late registrations.

The majority of the time, the registration/roster scenario that we deal with falls somewhere in between the scenarios explained above. We completely understand that what we do here at Sylvania Recreation

isn’t rocket science or brain surgery but it requires attention to detail and consistency.

There are two things that the community can do to help: 1. Register before the deadline!

2. Always know that the Sylvania Recreation Program Department is working hard to provide a great experience for you and your family.

SV Athletes of the Week Basketball

Wrestling

Sophomore Halle Barnett is a two year starter for the Southview Lady Cougars. She is among the NLL leaders in both points and rebounds and notched a doubledouble in her last two games against Bryan and Central Catholic. She is also getting it done in the classroom where she carries a 3.58 GPA. She attributes this season’s success to teamwork.

Head Coach Kelly Heil added, ‘Halle is a very coachable and hard-working student-athlete. She is an excellent role model for her teammates. Her work ethic and leadership skills will make her very successful in life.’

Killian Cannon is only in his third year of wrestling, but his hard work and dedication have earned him third at St. John’s Titan Invitational, second at Start High School Spartan Invitational, sixth at Lake High School and first at the Maumee Andy Bates Freshman Tournament. Most recently he placed third at the NLL Championship. His coach Brian Helminiak added, ‘His strength of character helps him lead his teammates. We are excited to see what Killian is able to accomplish in his next three years as a Southview Cougar.’ In addition, he carries a 3.57 GPA in the classroom.

NV Athlete of the Week

Junior Anika Sweeney is in her first season as a member of the LadyKat basketball program. She helped lead Northview to two important NLL wins over Anthony Wayne and Bowling Green by scoring 19 points and 22 points, respectively. Since returning, she has started in all nine of her contests and has been a major contributor in two upset wins over Anthony Wayne and Springfield.

This season she is averaging 12.8 points, three rebounds, and two assists per game and was recently named the BCSN Athlete of the Week.

Meet at SeaGate will feature women gymnasts

The Elevate the Stage podium-style gymnastics meet is bringing championshipcaliber NCAA gymnastics teams and thousands of youth gymnasts to Toledo.

Bowling Green State University, the University of Denver, the University of Michigan and Utah State along with club teams from all over the country are scheduled to compete Feb. 23-25 at the Sea Gate Centre.

Elevate the Stage has solely been held in Birmingham for the last three years as a meet between the University of Alabama and Auburn University. In 2018, Elevate the Stage will take place in six different cities across the United States. The event features a weekend-long competition with over 1,000 youth gymnasts in attendance and a women’s collegiate gymnastics meet. This Elevate the Stage meet will bring four of the top collegiate gymnastics programs in the country to Toledo for the first time.

Elevate the Stage provides a championship caliber platform for the

student-athletes. The meet is staged on the podiums, which have historically only been used for the SEC and NCAA Championships. Competing on the podiums during the regular season gives the teams an incredible advantage heading into postseason competition. Additionally, the podiums are visually appealing to the audience and have more bounce and spring for the gymnasts.

The University of Michigan is ranked in the NCAA Top 10 with some of the country’s top gymnasts going into Elevate the Stage. “I love that we are expanding the exposure of collegiate women’s gymnastics into the Toledo area and giving all of our Michigan fans and alumni in that area a chance to see our team,” said Michigan Head Coach Bev Plocki. “Being on a podium will help our team a great deal to prepare for what it is like to compete at the NCAA Championship.”

Annual Mission Trip fundraiser planned On Tuesday, Feb. 27, bd’s Mongolian Grill will be the hot spot for the seventh annual Lourdes University Mission Trips fundraiser.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 5001 Monroe Street at the Franklin Park Mall.

Lourdes University’s Department of Campus Ministry and the Linking Interest, Needs and Knowledge student organization are the organizers of this event.

The Lourdes University Art Department will present the 2018 Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak Art Lecture on Sunday, March 18, with well-known painter and muralist Dr. Hubert Massey from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd.The lecture is free and open to the public.

Lenten Devotional book available

Lent has taken on a renewed meaning at Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake, Mich., and for the community around this historical church of 158 years. Through donations from the Women of Zion and community friends Zion has self-published a free Lenten Devotional book compiled by Pastor Terry Rebert.

“Lent is a time to go deeper into reflection and meditation concerning what Christ has done for all who follow him,” stated Pastor Rebert. “People who follow Christ do amazing things to reflect that love. In my ministry, I have collected some of these stories and put them into a Lenten booklet to give people a vision of what ‘picking up the cross’ and following Christ means to them.”

Apparently, it’s not because of the way women look in jeans, but because of the stress it takes to find a pair. The survey stated that many women take as long as six days to find jeans that fit them perfectly.

Excuse me, but I thought Brits had a stiff upper lip. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a nice, normal man that “fits” you when you have lived over five decades? They are being a bit wimpy if you ask me. We 53-yearolds have far greater issues in the world of fashion than being stressed over how our bum looks in a pair of Levi’s.

Scarves are your friend

Many people believe that my love of playing in the snow is the reason I live close to the 45th parallel. True, but an extra-added bonus to this climate is that you can get away with wearing a scarf 70 percent of the year. My millennial daughter recently face-timed me. Instead of enjoying seeing her mother up close and personal, she asked in a panic, “Oh my gosh! Is that what my neck is going to look like?” She left the conversation to go search for moisturizer.

Fashion tip: You can never own too many scarves or black turtlenecks.

Shoes glorious shoes

My decrease in estrogen levels has not diminished my love of shoes. Mind you, the majority of mine are for outdoor adventure, but I love wearing heels now and then. Lately, to my dismay, it appears women have two choices in shoe attire; grandma or hooker. I want to lean more toward hooker, because face it, no matter what is going on north of your ankles, your feet weather the storm of gravity far more successfully than other body parts.

Sadly, I end up closer to the “grandma spectrum.” Being a woman of height, I wish I had the confidence to pull off being 5-feet 13inches but I’m still a work in progress.

Fashion tip: If you find the need to ask more than one fellow shopper, “Do you think I can pull these off?”—you can’t.

Kunkle's most proud of the peer mediatation program she initiated 14 years ago involving interested third-, fourth- and fifthgrade students. “Those students learn many life skills as they gain knowledge on how to deal and help with conflict resolution,” she stated.

“Our goal is to be reflective, reasonable and relate to the problem.” To date, 24 third grade, 77 fourth -grade and 76 fifth-grade students are participating in the program, meeting regularly where they refine those life skills.

Fashion mistakes will be made. When I open my closet, I often ask myself what was I thinking … or drinking, when I bought the sheer blouse that I was going to wear a sexy cami under. It never happened.

The British survey did have one positive thing to share. They found that women who did find a pair of jeans that fit after their nervewracking search kept them on average for six years. That’s longer than most of my relationships have lasted. So ladies of a certain age, if you can still wear denim, especially without an elastic waist, embrace them and seize the day.

Tree City Playhouse presents ‘Becky’s New Car’ in March Tree City Playhouse, a community theatre programming effort of the Sylvania Community Arts Commission, will present Steven Dietz’s “Becky’s New Car” on March 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. Directed by Dave Nelms, the show features the acting talents of Danita Binkowski, Angela Bylicki, Larry Farley, Hans Giller, Tim Robinson and Samanthia Rousos.

Have you ever been tempted to flee your own life? Becky Foster is caught in middle age, middle management and in a middling marriage—with no prospects for change on the horizon. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into the

car dealership where Becky works. Becky is offered nothing short of a new life… and the audience is offered a chance to ride shotgun in a way that most plays wouldn’t dare. “Becky’s New Car” is a thoroughly original comedy with serious overtones, a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken.

Performances will take place at Church 3TwentyOne, 5845 Centennial Rd., in Sylvania.

Learn how to research your ancestors, organize information and publish your findings at the Genealogy class to be held at the Sylvania Senior Center, 7140 Sylvania Ave. The eight-week class begins Friday, March 2, and continues every Friday through April 27, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Class highlights include: using google genealogy, Ancestry.com, Family Tree and tracing nameless ancestors. Basic computer

skills are required.

Genealogy has been the passion of Patrick McVicker, the instructor of this class for over 35 years. He currently volunteers as a genealogy indexer and has indexed over 360,000 names.

During the first weeks of March, the Toledo Zoo is offering discounted admission coupons. The 25 percent-off coupon is available online at toledozoo.org and is valid weekdays (Monday through Friday) March 5 to 9 and 12 to 16.

Guests must present the coupon (printed or digital) at the entry gate to receive the discount. Only one coupon is necessary per transaction; however, it does not apply to groups of 20 or more.

Ten Mile Creek Theatre Company will be performing, “An Evening With Shel Silverstein,” on Thursday and Friday, March 1-2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Olivet Christian Life Center, 5840 Monroe St. The show features short plays by Silverstein along with selections of his poetry, performed by youth

actors.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased online by going to www.tenmilecreektheatre.com or at the door the night of each performance. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students.

Racing for Recovery’s long-standing addiction recovery support group meeting, held each Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 6202 Trust Dr. in Holland, began streaming live on Facebook on Feb. 8. The weekly video of the meeting can be found at Facebook.com/RacingforRecovery, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Since its inception in 2001, Racing for Recovery has continued to be a leader in developing new ways for everyone affected by addiction to engage in a positive and nonconfrontational dialogue to enable healing.

In conjunction with several weekly support group meetings, the organization also provides a safe place to get a meal, embark on physical and spiritual growth, seek employment, obtain professional counseling, as well as a private online support forum to continue a healthy conversation and develop healing habits.

In addition, Racing for Recovery and Mercy Health are working hand-in-hand to facilitate the delivery of other complementary professional services that

help battle the opioid issues being faced in Ohio.

Since not everyone has access to Facebook, new tools and processes are also being developed to help reach more people in need. “We are continually striving to provide access to our resources for everyone in need,” said Todd Crandell, President and Founder.

There will be a private, off-camera seating area within the meeting room and in the lounge adjacent to it, so anyone who is attending but not comfortable being seen on camera can still fully participate.

The initial implementation of this tool will allow anyone to view the meeting on Facebook, in real-time, and then re-view later from an online archive. “We’ve also setup the social media hashtag #SobrietyRocks, so that everyone can track the conversation in real-time online,” said Todd Bieber, Executive Director. The private online forum can be found by visiting racingforrecovery.org and clicking the Online Support Group Login button in the Services section of the navigation menu.

Shorties U, 50-Hour Film Challenge planned

Students in fifth through eighth grade can participate in Shorties U workshop, a youth filmmaking program presented by the Sylvania Community Arts Commission, to learn filmmaking basics. Shorties U will be held on Feb. 24 and March 3 from 9 to 12 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 from 9 to 2 p.m. at the Sylvania Historical Village.

The three-day workshop led by local professionals will include learning about developing an idea, writing a script, shooting on a budget and the fundamentals of editing.

Teams will consist of five to 10 students who will create a short, three-minute film at the closing of the session. A pizza party and Q&A session for the students with the local professionals will close out the workshop on March 10 from 12 to 2 p.m. at J&G’s Pizza Palace.

The 50-hour Challenge for adult and high school film teams will be held March 16 to 18.

Teams will receive a series of requirements that must be incorporated into the film. After the allotted 50 hours, films are submitted and judged by a guest panel consisting of professionals in the film industry.

Interested teams should register online at sylvaniaarts.org/TCFF by March 1. The fee is $45 for adult teams and $35 for student teams.

The created films will show during the festival, April 27 to 29 at Olander Park’s Nederhouser Community Hall.

Frank Balazs

Frank T. Balazs, Sr., 74, of Lambertville, Mich., passed away Feb. 7, 2018, at ProMedica Flower Hospital.

Frank was employed with National Camper Land before retiring. He was a true BMX dad. Frank served as crew chief, mechanic, and provided transportation all over the United States to races where his children competed.

Frank is survived by his daughter Tami (Bill) Hodge; Frank, Jr. (Julie) and Eric Balazs; 11 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rolanda Balazs, and daughter Tania Balazs.

Janetta Richards

Janetta J. Richards, 87, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Feb. 9, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Oct. 4, 1930, in Huntingdon, Penn., to Clarence and Ethel (Anderson) Silknitter. She married David E. Richards on July 26, 1953, and together they raised six daughters.

Janetta was a compassionate woman who put the needs of others first and was always appreciative of people’s kindness. She was an amazing cook, an avid gardener, and enjoyed not only working in her garden but helping others too. When her daughters were young, Janetta volunteered for their activities, including being a Girl Scout Coordinator and youth group volunteer, and assisted with many school activities. She was a longtime

member of the Sylvania First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Merry Gold Garden Club.

Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She found pleasure in attending many of their activities and loved having them at her home. Janetta and Dave’s home was always welcoming to family and friends.

Janetta is survived by her daughters Nancy (Jim) Decker, Linda Richards, Teresa Joseph, Tammy (Dave) Dorner, Kim Lewis (Jim), and Kris (Aaron) Zombo; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws Jodie Silknitter, Betty Stone and Peggy Richards, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, brothers John (Jane), Bob (Jean), and Clarence “Junior;” sisters Mayetta (Ken) Decker and Rolene (Dyke) Parks.

Raymond LaPlante

Bud, age 84 of Petersburg, Mich., went home to be with the Lord Feb. 2, 2018, after his long battle with cancer.

He was the eldest child of the late Raymond C. and Catherine (Justen) LaPlante, born July 25, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Joy (Rogers) LaPlante.

From an early age, Bud had a love of horses, particularly thoroughbred racehorses.

His first horse was kept in his parent’s city backyard when he was a teenager. At age 18, Bud obtained his trainer license and both trained and raced horses over the years. He was easily recognized by the cowboy hat and boots he always wore. For over 35 years, Bud celebrated the Kentucky Derby with family and friends at his home on the first Saturday in May. Bud attended Central Catholic High School. He served our country as an SP3 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his years of service, he returned to Toledo and worked as a delivery boy for Toledo Blue Print and after years of hard work, dedication and his gift for sales, he became owner. He sold the business and retired in 2002. Bud was also a life member of the Toledo Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Catherine, sister Mary Jo and brother-in-law Glenn Whetsel, sister-in-law Marie LaPlante, brother-in-law Ray Englehardt and grandson Dustin Diesing.

Bud will be deeply missed by his surviving family, wife, siblings; Tom LaPlante and William (Marge Buchanan) LaPlante, Jean Englehardt and Janet LaPlante; his children Julie (John Albrant) Diesing, Sue (Tom) Ludwig, Lisa Gardner, Angel (Jeff) Miller, Rick (Shamber) LaPlante and Autumn LaPlante; his stepchildren Ely (Shawna) Manore, Leah Manore, and Tyler (Lindsey) Elliott, 19 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren.

Bud was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Temperance, Mich., since 1959.

Dorothy Rhoades

Dorothy “Dot” Rhoades, 84 of Ottawa Lake, Mich., passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2018, at the Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, Ohio.

Dorothy was born on March 23, 1933, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to Paul and Ruth Luckhardt. She married Eldean Rhoades (deceased Sept. 28, 1991) and raised three children. She was a baker for Sautter’s in Sylvania, Ohio.

She is survived by her sons Arthur (Patsy) Rhoades and Calvin Rhoades; daughter Bonnie Rhoades Case; sister Martha Carr; and brothers Edwin, Harold and Neil Luckhardt; grandchildren Audrey (Scott) Rochowiak, Adam (Kaitlin) Rhoades, Andrew Rhoades; and great-grandchild Landon Rochowiak and many extended relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Nancy Butz

Nancy Wenland Butz, 86, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2018, with her family by her side.

She was born June 10, 1931, to the late Charlotte and Samuel LaVoie. Nancy was proud of graduating from the prestigious

DeVilbiss High School in Toledo. Being passionate about dance, she diligently trained with The Beatrice Gardner School of Dance, pursuing the profession in New York City.

Nancy met the love of her life, the late Ray Butz, to whom she was married in 1955.

Nancy and Ray were happily married for 57 years.

In her professional life, Nancy was respected as the office manager for Kirby Vacuum, a sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia, developed and led the math lab at Whittier Elementary School, acted as the secretary for Toledo Camera Club, managed business administration for her husband at Butz Welding and finished her career bookkeeping for her son at Butz Welding and Fabricating. Nancy enjoyed bowling with the Whittier PTA Bowling League, volunteering for channel 30 WGTE Public Television, planning trips, traveling, taking pictures with her husband, dancing, hosting parties, spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, sewing, upholstering, flying kites, telling stories, baking and cooking. But, most of all, Nancy loved spending time with her family!

She is survived by her loving sons Reggie, Randy (Mary) Butz, stepdaughter Kathleen Barta, grandchildren Josh (Laura) Smith, Bryan, Tiffany, Rachael, Kyle, and greatgrandson Dorian. She was proceeded in death by her mother, Charlotte, father, Samuel, husband, Raymond, and sisters Charlotte Anne and Lois Hood.

K. Wayne Gibson

On Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, K. Wayne Gibson passed away at the age of 92 surrounded by his loved ones. He lived his final days as he lived the rest of his life, making people smile with his witty sense of humor and his beautiful singing voice. Wayne was born April 8, 1925, in LaSalle, Ill. He was the son of Harry Gibson (Stella) and Marie Lewis (Nolan).

Wayne was a Lieutenant JG in the Navy and served in WWII and Korea. He retired from Owens-Illinois in 1984 after 30 years with the company. While working with OI, Wayne served as the mayor of Charlotte, Mich., in the mid 70s.

He is preceded in death by siblings Barbara

Mitchell and Joyce Stevens and children Mary Brophy and Daniel Gibson. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jeanette (Schwieckert) Gibson, and their children Kerry, Gail Gaurin (Elston), Steven (Cindy), Thomas (Betsy), Lynn Wolfe, Robert (Kristen), William (Sara), 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gregory Livingston

Gregory R. Livingston, 52, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Feb. 6, 2018, at Toledo Hospital. He was born April 5, 1965, to L. Jeanne and Robert E. Livingston, who preceded him in death.

Greg will leave behind memories of his dry, witty humor, a signature smile and laugh, and a deep passion for his family and everyone who he came in contact with. He lived life on his own terms, a man who marched to the beat of his own drum and reminded us all that life is too short and to live life doing what makes us happy. He had a close, extended family that he was fiercely loyal to, of those he met through the American Legion Post 468, Andy and Barneys, Fricker’s in Sylvania, and Sodbuster.

He was a selfless man, who put others before himself. He used his business, Livingston Landscape, to help those around him, whether it was through giving work to those who needed it, or doing extra work above and beyond for free. He was passionate in support of veteran’s causes and was frequently recruiting family and friends for the annual Memorial Day golf outing through the American Legion in support of veterans.

Our family has heard many stories of how Greg impacted their lives, what he meant to them, and it’s a testament to his character and the type of man he was and the life he lived. Greg will be severely missed by all his family and friends.

Greg is survived by his brother Robert (Dana) Livingston, his sister Diane Livingston; nephew Steve Livingston; nieces Jenna Livingston and Staci (Brett) Cheloff; great nephew Chase Okuley; and great nieces Caitlyn Livingston and Mila Cheloff.

Rose Miller

Rose Marie Miller, 90, died Jan. 23, 2018, of natural causes at Kingston Residence of Sylvania, Ohio. Rose was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., on March 25, 1927. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1945. In the fall of 1951, Rose went on a church outing to a dance at Fort Custer, near Kalamazoo. There she met Sgt. Glenn Miller, where they charmed each other with their senses of humor-Rose’s quick and quiet to Glenn’s brash and mischievous. They married Jan. 12, 1952, thus beginning her life as a military wife, and soon after, a mother. For the next seventeen years the couple crisscrossed the country and globe with their three children Glenn Jr., David and Karen, with the kid’s miscellaneous dogs, cats, and fish in tow.

After life in Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Germany, Arizona and New Jersey, Glenn retired from the Army after 21 years of service and the family returned to his hometown of Toledo. In “retirement,” the couple owned and operated the Union 76 service station at the corner of Main St. and Convent Blvd. in Sylvania, where they worked alongside their children and turned their customers into friends.

Rose enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and family. She went on an annual road trip and innumerable day outings with her daughter and granddaughters, Katie and Jenny. Rose loved baseball and was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers and a season-ticket holder to the Toledo Mud Hens. Rose was an avid bowler, gardener, reader, and baker, making dozens of Christmas cookies every year to give to friends and neighbors. Rose was a longtime community volunteer, sharing her love of teaching through tutoring grade-school children and her involvement with the Girl Scouts. She was also active in her neighborhood events and Block Watch.

Rose was smart, caring, thoughtful, kind, hard-working, and thoroughly good-hearted.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and will be greatly missed.

Rose is survived by her son Glenn (Patricia) Miller of Conifer, Colo.; son David (Dorinda) Miller of Ypsilanti, Mich.; daughter Karen Miller of Sylvania, Ohio; the lights of her life, granddaughters Katherine

Miller of Chicago, Ill., and Jennifer (Andrew) Roth of Dubuque, Iowa; brother John Ver Sluis of Kalamazoo and many loving nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

Rose is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, parents, Marinus and Mary (Shrote) Ver Sluis; brothers Homer Ver Sluis, Marinus Ver Sluis and Richard Ver Sluis.

Bill Liggett

Bill J. Liggett, 85, of Sylvania, Ohio, went home to the Lord, Feb. 12, 2018, while under hospice care.

Bill was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Jan. 12, 1933, to parents Albert A. and Nellie L. (Kurth) Liggett. He was employed for more than 35 years with Toledo Edison, until retiring in 1978. Bill was a long and active member of the Compelled Church where he served on the board of directors. He loved the out of doors.

Bill enjoyed working in his yard, camping with his whole family, fishing and reading his Bible.

He was a former member of the Boaz Lodge, F&AM. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ann (Norman) Liggett; children Albert (Barb) and Randy (Cindy) Liggett, Sandy (Chris) Westfall, Barb (Pedro) Farias, Nick (Anita) Liggett, Michael (Denise), Charles (Cecelia), and Harold (Kim) Yarnell, Jeri (John) Colvin, Ronald (Linda), and David Shutt, James Hoffmann, and Marie (Tim) Lundy; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sister Donna Wagner; and faithful K-9 companion Bandit. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Juanita Wilson.
